‘The Great Race’ comes to Manchester by Matthew Rice For those who can’t get enough classic cars good news is speeding towards the Northshire region. “I think it’s a wonderful thing. This is the first time the Great Race has come into the state of Vermont and having them coming into the Northshire is great,” Manchester and the Mountains Regional Chamber of Commerce executive director Berta Maginniss said. The Great Race, America’s premier old car rally parades through to Manchester on Friday, June l7 as up to 100 antique automobiles pass through en route to a scheduled stop at Stratton mid-day. “So no matter where you live in our region you can see these cars in our region. Many of these cars are one of a kind so you don’t see them on the road – they’re just wonderful vehicles,” she said.

The community is encouraged to come out and cheer as these cars move through town on Depot Street you may also catch a few of them refueling. “The impact of the Great Race is huge. They all have their own crews that travel with them so they drive during the day and work at night over the course of seven days,” Maginniss said. The Great Race is a time/speed/distance rally and the cars will be on the time clock as they come through Manchester. The vehicles, each with a driver and navigator, are given precise instructions each day that detail every move down to the second. They are scored at secret check points along the way and are penalized one second for each second either early or late. As in golf, the lowest score wins.

Vermont is poised to celebrate its natural resources, history and culture this weekend and you’re invited to join in the celebration for free. Dubbed Vermont Days, all state owned historic sites, museums and state parks will be open to the public this weekend, June 11-12, at no charge. This offer extends to residents and non-residents alike. “Vermont Days is a perfect opportunity to explore the outstanding variety of recreation, The Great Race; America's premier old car rally will pass through culture and history in Manchester during the morning of July 17. Vermont,” said Governor Peter

Shumlin in a recent press release. “The event also showcases Vermont’s strong sense of community and the deep appreciation Vermonters share for this wonderful place we call home.” Sponsored by the state of Vermont, the weekend is intended to promote interest in Vermont’s natural, historic and cultural attractions. Perhaps the highlight of the weekend is Saturday’s free fishing day, the only day in the year when residents and non-residents may fish without a license. The free fishing day conveniently coincides with the start of the largemouth and smallmouth bass season.

For fishing families, several area bodies of water have been named as Family Friendly Hot Spots, including: Lake Bomoseen, Lake St. Catherine, Half Moon Pond, Gale Meadow Pond and Lake Shaftsbury. Lake St. Catherine has a free Let’s Go Fishing clinic scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The clinic teaches children everything they need to know about fishing including skills, tackle craft, ecology and ethics. Manchester Antique and Classic Car Show this weekend The Manchester Antique and Classic Car Show, sponsored by the Land Rover Driving School, celebrates its 25th Anniversary this weekend with events slated Friday through Sunday, June 10 to 12, at the Dorr Farm off Route 30 in Manchester. One of the premier car shows in the region, the event kicks off with an early bird flea market from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday. This year, organizers are bringing back some popular events from years past. The “Back Seat Driver Competition” returns on Sunday at 10 a.m. Also on Sunday at 8 a.m., the Antique Motorcycle Rally returns. A special spot on the car show field has been reserved

for antique motorcycle enthusiasts to meet and display their cycles. Admission is $10 for this event. Also new this year is the Land Rover Challenge, in which competitors can bring their Land Rover or other off-road allwheel-drive vehicle and enter a fun, competitive obstacle course on Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. In honor of the 25th anniversary, Best in Show winners from past years have been invited back as guests to have their cars showcased at a special “Winners Circle” on the field. A prize will be awarded to the “Best of ” in the Winners Circle. At 4 p.m. on Saturday, there

will be a special car parade through town. Also on Saturday, at 6 p.m., the show’s dinner will feature Lenny Schaeffer, who will speak on the ins and outs of proper car restoration. Tickets to the dinner must be purchased in advance. A barn dance will follow the dinner at 7:30 p.m. The featured classes for this year are Corvette and Mercedes, which will receive special judging. Don’t miss the Miniature Antique Toy Car Exhibition, which will take place in the main event tent on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m. The Manchester Antique and Classic Car Show is open Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.,

The biggest part of the challenge other than staying on time and following the instructions is getting an old car to the finish line each day, organizers say. The first car is expected to arrive on Depot Street in the morning between 9:45 a.m. and another car will arrive each minute for the following hour

and a half. Cars range in age from 1911 to 1969, with most having been manufactured before World War II. For the first time, a 100-year-old car will be participating in the race - a 1911 Velie owned by Howard and Doug Sharp of Fairport, NY. Over the years, the Great Race has stopped in hundreds of cities big and small but this is the first time the race has come through Vermont. “This is really a great coup for us to have them in Vermont and be able to see them a couple of different places in the Northshire,” she said.

Free Continued from front page Battlefield State Historic Site, 5696 Monument Road in Hubbardton, organizers have planned a “Go Fly a Kite!” activity from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Participants will learn how to make a simple kite (or they can bring their own) and have the chance to fly it high above the battlefield. The park will also offer its normal activities as well, including flag raising and colonial-era games for children. Further north in Orwell, the Mount Independence State Historical Site will host an event dubbed, “Vermont History through Song,” at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Singer and researcher Linda Radtke and pianist Arthur Zorn will bring Vermont history to life with engaging commentary about the songs found in the Vermont Historical Society’s collection of sheet music. The following day, the park will host an interactive “Plant and Tree Walk” from 1 to 3 p.m. Clinical herbalist Julie Mitchell will lead a nature walk, showing participants how to identify plants and trees, and speak about their traditional and modern uses in medicine. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring along their identification books (if they have them) and a sense of adventure. In Bennington, visitors will have the chance to learn more about the tallest structure in Vermont, the Bennington Battle Monument. For those who prefer outdoor recreation, visitors can enjoy the day use facilities of the area’s state parks. Locally, entry to Bomoseen State Park, Lake St. Catherine State Park, Emerald Lake State Park, Shaftsbury State Park and Half Moon State Park are all free. For more specific information on the amenities and activities available at each park, visit www.vtstateparks.com. For those willing to travel, the Vermont History Museum in Montpelier will exhibit a fullsized wigwam, a re-creation of the Catamount Tavern with the Green Mountain Boys, and the “Freedom and Unity: One Ideal, Many Stories” multimedia exhibit.
