Mercedes and Corvette to be featured at car show By Matthew Rice Manchester is the place to be to check out an amazing range of automobile excellence at the Manchester Antique and Classic Car Show June 10-12 as the show celebrates 25 years of crowd-pleasing automobilethemed fun. “Some of our attendees tell us they look forward to Manchester Antique and Classic Car Show every year, it’s their favorite car show event,” Manchester and the Mountains Regional Chamber of Commerce director of membership and visitor services Beth Meachem said. “People love the new venue, they love the location surrounded by the mountains and close to town,” she said. The Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce welcomes the Sleek Mercedes and Chic Corvette as our featured marques at this year’s event at the Dorr Farm on Route 30 in Manchester. Don’t miss this weekend of nostalgia as great cars of the past are dusted off and taken on a road trip to Manchester. “We have been told that we’re

the best dust-off show in the area,” Meachem said. This show is often the first time a lot of these cars are out for the season so there’s a great excitement among the collectors because the season has just started and the weather is just starting to cooperate, Meachem said. Land Rover Driving School returns as presenting sponsor for this commemorative event. Fun activities are planned for the weekend guaranteed to bring back memories and create new ones. Land Rover will be offering attendees of the show an opportunity to climb behind the wheel of one of their vehicles on a specially designed course on the show field. Back by popular demand are the Saturday afternoon parade through Manchester Center and Manchester Village, the Back Seat Driving competition, Antique Toy Car Exhibition and Vintage motorcycle r a l l y. “The show began because Oscar Johnson and a couple of other (chamber) members who were avid car lovers saw this as an important economic driver for the region to fill beds and tables in restaurants…it’s been very

The Manchester Antique and Classic Car Show and the Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce celebrate 25 years. successful at doing that for 25 years,” Meachem said. Meachem said return visitors make up a large portion of the patrons for the event. The show always takes place the second weekend in June and knowing that allows patrons to book for the next year as they’re leav-

ing. “That’s how much they love coming here for this event,” she said. The weekend will be filled with fun activities for the whole f a m i l y, great food, music, games and more. Show hours are Friday, June 10 (early bird flea

market only) Noon-6 p.m., Saturday, June 11 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Sunday 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. Admission is $10 per person/ children are free. For more information about the event visit www.manchestercarshow. com or call 362-6313.

A new Pullman car shown in a historic photograph.

Still time to register to take part in this historic parade By Matthew Rice Everyone loves a parade, and the Pullman Parade Saturday will be no exception as the marchers get to accompany this unique historic artifact to the grounds at Hildene. On June 4 Hildene welcomes the Pullman Palace car known as Sunbeam to her new hometown, Manchester. The rain date will be the next day, Sunday, June 5. The folks at Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home, organiz-

ers of the parade hope to see a big turnout from surrounding communities for smiling faces to be in the parade. “I would love kids in the communities sur rounding Manchester north and south, east and west where the Northshire Free Press goes to get the message and register to ride,” Hildene’s Paula Maynard said. The star of the show is the 65-foot Sunbeam, which will command considerable attention as she passes by atop the

flatbed truck that brought her more than 1,000 miles from South Carolina to Vermont. The parade’s destination is the 412-acre estate that was home to three generations of Lincolns for 70 years, and is perfectly suited as a site for Sunbeam. Hildene is the ancestral home of presidential son, Robert T. Lincoln, who presided over the Pullman Company from 1897 to 1924. Sunbeam came off the line in 1903 during his tenure. This is also a Pullman car accustomed to

celebrity, having played a role in the histories of three U.S. Presidents: William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Many elements go into making a parade truly great and Hildene hopes to have them all from marching bands to fun modes of transportation, the participation of community groups and lots of children are a must. For that reason Hildene is calling all kids from pre-school age on up to 12-year-olds to par-

ticipate in the Pullman Parade. Signing up will be on a first come, first served basis. Don’t worry about your opportunity, sign ups have just begun. Kids ages five to 7 are invited to ride in Hildene’s bright red school bus. Each kid will get their own train whistle. Officially referred to as a steam trumpet, whistles were used historically to warn of approaching trains and to communicate with rail workers.

2 - The Northshire FreePress - June 3, 2011

Parade Continued from front page Kids from 8-12 will receive railroad caps for their ride aboard Hildene’s tractor-drawn farm wagon. Riders of all ages, 8 and above are invited to dress themselves and their bicycles in all manner of red, white and blue. Each will receive a noisemaker or streamer for their bike. The Pullman Parade will commence at 10 a.m., just north of the Orvis Green and proceed south on Route 7, passing the

Equinox Resort. After passing the hotel, the parade will travel a short distance to Hildene. There it will turn onto the road that leads to the Welcome Center at the family’s historic carriage barn. Here the festivities will continue with remarks from invited guests, refreshments, and if all goes as planned, the craning of the Sunbeam onto temporary rails and a celebratory champagne launch. “Part of the festivities, at some point, will be picking it up and placing it,” Maynard said. When final construction on the site is completed Sunbeam

the Pullman car, will give Hildene a platform to interpret not only this important chapter in Robert Lincoln’s life but that of the country during the Gilded Age, a period in our history that gave voice to the labor movement and the rise of the Black middle class with the Pullman porters. The site interpretation planned for the car, entitled ‘Many Voices,’ will highlight these historical influences. Hildene looks forward not only to the celebratory arrival of Sunbeam on June 4 but to the date it finally opens to the public, August 1. Hildene is open year round

from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Parents who wish to register children for participation in the Pullman Parade, contact Paula at 802.367.7961 or email paula@ hildene.org. To learn more about Hildene, go to www. hildene.org. To see video of progress on the restoration effort visit Hildene on Facebook.

Rembering Fenway Park

Noted sports journalist Harvey Frommer will discuss his new book, “Remembering Fenway Park,” on Sunday, June 5 at 5 p.m. at the Northshire Bookstore in Manchester. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of this legendary sports venue, Frommer has compiled a stunning collection of team history, first-person narratives, and iconic images of the home of the Boston Red Sox. The book captures the essence of this small, idiosyncratic park that has hosted more than 130 million people for some of baseball’s most memorable games. It’s an incomparable walk through the decades with anecdotes from the likes of Bobby Doerr, Luis Tiant, Dom DiMaggio, Dwight Evans, Jimmy Piersall, Fred Lynn, Terry Francona, Dan Shaughnessy, Bill Lee, Jim Lonborg, Leigh Montville, Don Zimmer, Dennis Eckersley, and Michael Dukakis. Harvey Frommer is also a noted oral historian and the author of 40 sports books including the classics “New York City Baseball, 1947-1957” and “Shoeless Joe and Ragtime Baseball.” His acclaimed “Remembering Yankee Stadium,” an oral/narrative history was published in 2008. On Friday, June 3 at 7 p.m. at the bookstore, O. Ross McIntyre will present his inspirational memoir of canoeing the wilderness rivers of North America, “Paddling Beads.” An avid canoeist since boyhood, Ross and his wife of 48 years, the late Jean Geary McIntyre, spent every chance they could deep in the North American wilderness, paddling and camping for weeks at a time, returning afterward to the riverfront New Hampshire farm where he and Jean raised their three children, Jeanie, Ross, and Elizabeth. “Paddle Beads” is Ross’s inspirational and moving memoir of those trips and the resultant lifetime journey they took together. Rye Barcott presents his inspirational memoir “It Happened on the Way to War,” on Saturday, June 4 at 7 p.m. at Northshire Bookstore. As a college undergraduate working on his senior thesis, Rye Barcott visited one of the world’s largest slums, Kibera in Kenya. There he met Tabitha Festo and community organizer Salim Mohammad. The trio founded the renowned Carolina for Kibera, which uses sports and health care to nurture and develop young leaders in the slum. However, Barcott was on an ROTC scholarship with a four-year obligation to the Marines. “It Happened on the Way to War” takes readers in and out of Kibera as Barcott led Marines into combat and struggled to make sense of the two worlds of service in which he operated. The book is being published to coincide with Carolina for Kibera’s tenth anniversary and the release of “Chasing the Mad Lion,” a feature-length documentary about the organization. The little things mean a lot. Including how hospitals treat their patients. Dr. Anthony Donaldson went to Dartmouth for college, then med school, then his residency. Impressive credentials. He wanted to put them to work in a caring environment, where patients are people, not numbers. So he came to SVMC, a hospital that understands the importance of personal care for everyone in our community. The simple life is the good life for Dr. Donaldson. He enjoys living on his 125-acre farm with his wife and three boys. They raise chickens as a hobby, which means lots of fresh eggs for sale at Gardenworks in Salem.
