SolarFest provides plenty of learning opportunities More than 80 workshops on sustainable living and renewable energy featured during three day festival By Derek Liebig Most local schools may have shut their doors for the summer, but a different kind of classroom nestled on an 80 acre farm in the hills of Tinmouth will open its doors this weekend. SolarFest will be held Friday, July 15 through Sunday, July 17 at Forget-Me-Not-Farm. The three day, dawn-to-dusk festival combines music and a conference on sustainable living and alternative energy. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn skills and knowledge from many of the leading thinkers and doers in the country. The festival features alternative energy companies, green builders, architects, organic food producers, college professors, engineers, system designers and environmental activists, who lead a wide range of educational workshops related to renewable energy and sustainable living. “There are longer, more indepth, hands-on workshops this year than ever before,” said

Patty Kenyon, SolarFest managing director. Workshops fall under one of five subjects or tracks: Green Building, Renewable Energy, The Solar Generation, Sustainable Agriculture and Thriving Locally. In all, there are more than 80 different workshops, ranging from “Photovoltaics 101” which provides attendees with a crash course in generating electric power from solar radiation to “Raw Milk: Sustainable Dairy in Practice and Policy,” a discussion of raw milk dairy farming. “There are a bunch of great workshops in sustainable agriculture, including one on growing mushrooms and another on growing rice is cold climates,” Kenyon said. There are also workshops designed specifically for children. Solar Generation workshops focus on providing children opportunities to think, learn and create while having fun. Some of the specific classes included in this tract include “Climate Change 101,”

Wide variety of music at SAW Fest A wide array of musical styles ranging from rock to reggae will be served up this Saturday, July 16 at the Salem Art Works fifth annual Music Festival, also known as SAWFest. The event takes place on the grounds of Salem Arts Works, located at 19 Cary Lane in Salem, New York, from 3 to 11:30 p.m. “It’s growing each year,” said Jesse Cottrell of Salem Art Works. Last year’s event had approximately 350 attendees, he noted. The festival takes place out on the lawn at SAW, and includes lawn games and food vendors. Founded to promote the wide variety of music originating in the upstate New York/Vermont area, the SAWFest features a good cross-section of bands, each with its own flavor. One exception to the local vibe is a “friend of SAW,” Jamaican native Kalvin Kristi. Described by Billboard magazine as one of

the most complex, yet compelling artists to emerge from the Jamaican alternative network, Kristi mixes an infectious fusion of reggae and rock. Hailing from Greenwich, New York, Eastbound Jesus is a fresh bluegrass quintet that has gone from playing around a woodstove on a chilly night to performing sold-out shows and even winning the 2011 Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s Battle of the Bands. Noel Thompson of the band Next President will be performing a solo set of his own brand of jazz-influenced indie punk rock. From Albany, New York, Lovesick Nomads are an experimental garage rock trio that includes Dan Gaetani and brothers Chase and Dane Winkler. The festival is rounded out by solo performer Nathan Knowles, a multi-instrumentalist sing-

“Harnessing the Power of Wind,” and “Making the World a Better Place: Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots.” According to Kenyon, one of the most popular children’s workshops involves the construction and racing of solar powered cars. During this workshop, children will be provided with a solar panel and electric motor that they can then use to create a sun-driven car. Workshop leaders provide the tools, materials and knowhow; kids provide the creativity and hard work. Most children take approximately four to six hours on Saturday to build their car and then demonstrate and race their creations Sunday afternoon. Children 10 to 14 years old who would like to participate in this event are required to attend the initial meeting from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday. For the less industrial-minded children, Kids Corner workshops provide children a place to enjoy fun and creative activi-

Exhibit opens window on Bennington in 1967 A new exhibit at the Bennington Museum offers a fascinating series of images from nearly 44 years ago and has an equally interesting story behind it. “A Vermont October Weekend in Black-and-White” opened July 14 and runs through Oct. 10. The exhibition that includes fourteen of these photographs will be on view in the John T. Harrison, Jr. Orientation Gallery of the Bennington Museum. In October 1967, photographer Jonathan Brand, his wife Monika, their daughters Ulrika and Jenny, and Monika’s niece Linda Elowson, traveled from Manhattan’s Upper West Side to Bennington, Vermont. This journey was fully documented in black and white images by Brand, as his friend and Middlebury classmate Carl McCutcheon drove the family car. Brand shot approximately 45 to 50 rolls of film in three days. Images from the series include gleaming new gas stations and rusty old cars, interiors of the Paradise Motel and a

He photographed tourists visiting the Bennington Battle Monument, and people viewing displays at an antique show, monks at the monastery at the Everett Mansion and

policemen perched on stools at a luncheonette counter, and daughters Ulrika dancing in a yard and Jenny asleep in her stroller. Over one thousand images were taken, and in 2010, 174 were donated to the Bennington Museum. The purpose of the weekend in 1967 was to introduce Linda to Brand’s Bennington relatives, tour the town, and enjoy the Vermont foliage at its peak. Linda had been living with the Brand family in New York, prior to the family moving to Scandinavia where Brand became the creative director at the international advertising agency J. Walter Thompson. Over the Columbus Day weekend, Brand juggled three Leica cameras and focused on everything about his old hometown. The group visited his three aunts (Eva Betts, Mary Faller, Sadie Leader) and their families, as well as many locations throughout town, both notable and common. In the mid-1960s, Brand was obsessed with photography. He

Chamber music from France and Spain Featured at MMF concert Manchester Music Festival’s July 21 concert in the Arkell Pavilion at the Southern Vermont Arts Center features works from both sides of the border between France and Spain. The scheduled works are the evocative Quartet for piano and strings in a minor, Op. 67 by Joaquin Turina; the Trio for flute, cello and piano in e minor, Op. 45 by Louise Farrenc; and Maurice Ravel’s virtuosic Trio for piano and strings in a minor. “Turina, who was living in Paris at the time, consciously set out to create a ‘Spanish’ style of music in the Opus 67 quartet,” said Artistic Director Ariel Rudiakov. Performing in the quartet are Joana Genova, violin; Mr. Rudiakov, viola; Ron Feldman, cello; and Adam

Neiman, piano. “Farrenc and Ravel represent the French side of the border,” said Rudiakov, “although some hear Basque flavors in Ravel’s music.” Jayn Rosenfeld, flute; Benjamin Capps, cello; and Jean Schneider, piano, perform the Farrenc flute trio. Joana Genova, Ron Feldman and Adam Neiman play the Ravel trio. The Thursday concert starts at 7:30 p.m.. Tickets and further information are available at Manchester Music Festival’s website, www.mmfvt.org, and at 802-362-1956. “We are very grateful to Arthur Lombard and the late Frederica Lombard for their generous sponsorship of this concert,” said Rudiakov.

Exhibit Continued from front page actively participated in workshops with photographers such as Richard Avedon, Bruce Davidson, David Vestal, and Garry Winogrand. During this time, Brand shot an average of 170 photographs a day, and absorbed the qualities of his mentors’ work: After graduating Bennington High School in 1951, Brand bought his first camera in 1956 while on a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Oslo in Norway. Since then his work has been exhibited in galleries from New York to Portland, Oregon, and his photographs are such notable collections as the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the International Center of Photography (New York), the Houston Museum of Fine Arts, the Portland Art Museum (Oregon), and the Portland Museum of Art (Maine). This exhibit was curated by a Bennington Museum volunteer Dana Pilson, who has been working on cataloging the 174 photographs that Brand donated to the museum. “Selecting the fourteen images to be included in the show was quite

the task.” She claimed. “They all had great depth, interest, and character. I am happy to have the exhibit installed for Jonathan Brand’s 60th class reunion for Bennington High School this July.” The Bennington Museum, located at 75 Main Street, Bennington has the largest public collection of Grandma Moses paintings in the world as well as the largest collection of 19th century Bennington pottery. In the other seven galleries, the museum presents a 1924 Wasp Touring Car, one of only twenty produced, military artifacts, one of the earliest ‘stars and stripes’ in existence, fine and decorative arts, and more. On view through October 30 is “Grandma Moses and the ‘Primitive’ Tradition.” The museum is just a short ride from Manchester, Williamstown, and eastern New York, and open February through December every day but Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and students over 18. No admission is charged for younger students or to visit the museum shop and café. Visit the museum’s website www.benningtonmuseum. org or call 802-447-1571 for more information.

Lots of fun planned in Wells Saturday By Matthew Rice The Wells Variety Day Fair has been showing guests a good time for 34 years thanks to the folks in the Wells United Methodist Church. “It’s a good Vermont day, fun for families and people of all ages, event organizer Audrey Nelson said. Saturday, July 16 the fair will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the village green and church lawn. “It’s some of the same things and some new things – it’s a busy fun day, she said. Variety Day is an all-day family fun event featuring everything from tasty treats and fair food to a silent auction and vendors. Kids will have the sawdust pit to keep them busy ‘hunting’ for treasure until other games start up in the afternoon at 1:30 p.m. “It’s as much fun to watch as it is for the kids (to dig), Nelson said. The dig will be separated into age groups. Although the sawdust pile is a favorite, there are games galore to keep them busy during the day, Nelson said. When not sifting through sawdust patrons will find the sign up sheets for the giant silent auction featuring more than 75 local items including many restaurant gift certificates and donated items including Telescope Casual Furniture. The silent auction will close at 3:30 p.m., however patrons don’t have to be present to win, they can leave a telephone number

and find out by phone. Vendors will have handcrafted wares for sale all around the green. Live music starts at 10 a.m. and runs until 1 p.m. provided by ‘the Butterfields’. “They’re a couple who play wonderful modern and old time music, they come every year, Nelson said. Later, the dance group ‘The Wild Country Cloggers’ make their return to Variety Day from Bennington. The family dance team will perform starting at 3 p.m. “They’re really good and family-oriented too; they have grandmas and grandpas and little ones all dancing, the whole family’s doing it. There’s quite a group of them, Nelson said. When all of the activity gets your appetite revved up, look to the famous food court. The food court returns with a taste of Vermont from the homemade macaroni and cheese made with real Cabot Cheese, maple flavored baked beans and more. “You can’t beat it, it’s marvelous, she said. If fair food is more your speed, the burger booth is always a place to stop for something savory with your choice of toppings, or find hot dogs and other summertime carnival favorites. “We will have some vegetarian foods too, Nelson said. Save room for dessert like fresh strawberry shortcake

www.manchesternewspapers.com

with real whipped cream or a stop by the ice cream booth. The Larson Farm of Wells will provide useful and interesting information on local, fresh grown foods and where to buy local so we can all eat healthy. Nelson said Variety Day is one of the church’s primary fundraisers for the work they do. “We do an awful lot of helping out local people; the proceeds go to cover local mission work, she said. For additional general information call 802-645-0216 or for vendor information call 802-3253203. And don’t forget to buy a square for the Cow plop BINGO. “It goes until the cow plops, Nelson said. The payout happens like a 50-50 drawing, she said. Admission to the event is free. “It’s a fun day, kind of a mixture of everything, Nelson said.
