Music from Salem celebrates 25th Anniversary By Linda Ellingsworth From a single concert in 1986, Music from Salem has grown into a year-round series of chamber music that includes concerts, open rehearsals, free children’s workshops, seminars for professionally-bound musicians, and more. It’s a unique program. Each s u m m e r, musicians of international reputation live and work together for a week at the Brown Farm in Salem, NY, in the peace and beauty of Washington County. The pastoral environs bring out the best in the musicians. “The musicians end up going more deeply into the music,” said Administrator Susan Alancraig. “They form close connections; it translates into the concert.” Co-founder Lila Brown concurs. “Musicians say that their time in Salem is artistically healing and fulfilling. This deep satisfaction and artistic wellbeing are what makes the concerts special.” The connections formed by the musicians over the course of their week together help create a connection to the audi-

ence. “This connection is at the heart of all Music from Salem endeavors,” said Alancraig. On each Thursday before the concert, the public is invited to a free open rehearsal at 4 p.m. at the Brown Farm, located at 154 Priest Rd. in Salem. The rehearsal is informal, with repertory from the upcoming Saturday concert presented. It offers a rare opportunity to observe the process of shaping a performance, and ask questions of the musicians. The Saturday night concerts are the culmination of the week’s work. “These are worldclass musicians,” said Alancraig. “The concerts are amazing.” Central to the organization’s mission is the belief that artist and audience complement each other. “We aim to nurture this relationship,” she added. The 2011 season opens on Thursday, July 7 at 6 p.m. with Music from Salem’s 25th Anniversary Gala. It will take place at the Peller house located at 60 Duelles Lane in Greenwich, NY. Music From Salem opens its season July 7 inside of a historic barn. It’s a perfect site for music, wine, and a fabulous buffet dinner with locally produced food. Tickets for the Gala are $60 per person. Regular chamber music concerts are held at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge on Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. The first concert, on July 9, is entitled “From the Brandenburg Court to California,” and features Bach’s Fifth Brandenburg Concerto, followed by a folk music romp that includes “Concertina” for flute, viola and double bass by Schulhoff, among other works. Manchester’s mountains will come alive with the music of old masters and new on July 7 when the Manchester Music Festival opens its 37th classical concert series. “The audience can expect to hear a completely different musical experience every week,” said Ariel Rudiakov, violist and Artistic Director of the Manchester Music Festival. “I am very excited about this season.” The theme of the 2011 season is Crossing Borders—Your Passport To Great Music. “We will cross not only geographic borders but sound borders as well,” Mr. Rudiakov said. The seven-week series will spotlight a dazzling array of highly-acclaimed musicians including classical pianist and public radio host Christopher O’Riley, who will perform with the Manchester Festival Orchestra conducted by Rudiakov. The Thursday concerts will take place at 7:30 p.m. at the Southern Vermont Arts Center’s Arkell Pavilion in

Ravnan returns, along with violinist Katie Landsdale and Minnesota Orchestra principal flutist Adam Kuenzel. These visiting musicians join co-directors Lila Brown (viola), Juidth Gordon (piano), bassist Max Judelson and violinist Michelle Painter. Following each concert, the audience is encouraged to stay for a reception, where they can converse with the performers. Due to the generosity of a donor, all concerts are “pay what you wish” admission, in order to make the concerts accessible to as many people as possible. A donation of $20 is suggested, but

not required. Concerts are scheduled for July 9 and 17, and August 6 and 14. Open rehearsals will be held July 7 and 14, and August 4 and 11. Music from Salem also offers Children’s Workshops for children ages six to 12. Held on the Saturday of a concert, these free events feature the musicians in a lively introduction to musicmaking and listening. Fort Salem Theater opens with Carousel In what has become an annual collaboration, Fort Salem Theater welcomes the repertory troupe from Westminster, California’s Rose Center Theater for the summer season’s opening show. Widely known as Richard Rodgers’ favorite score, Carousel was his second collaboration with his book writer and lyricist partner, Oscar Hammerstein II. Their first musical, Oklahoma!, broke box office records and became the template for defining modern musical theater as separate from musical comedy, integrating story, song, and dance to a degree not previously achieved. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s later successes include the Pulitzer Prize winning South Pacific, The King and I, Flower Drum Song, and The Sound of Music.

Nelson worked for many years at Park Playhouse in Albany, and after a stint as musical director at Fort Salem under the previous management, fell so in love with the area that he bought a second home here. “My wife, Mary, and I love coming to Salem,” says the multi-tasking Nelson, who, in addition to running the Rose Center, chairs the Performing Arts Department at a high school in Huntington Beach, and on Sundays directs a church choir. ”If we don’t give ourselves a reason to come, we

Mini Collages exhibit at Kittay Library

On Saturday, July 9th from 3:00 - 5:00 the Kittay Public Library in Rupert will have an opening reception for Heidi Hammell. The art exhibit is a presentation of a wide variety of mini collages created by Heidi. Ms Hammell was born and raised in New Hampshire and, along with her husband, has lived in Vermont for most of her adult life. She graduated from Colby Sawyer College with a BFA in art education. In 2006 she was a participant in an art show called “Two by Two” where she was confined to creating within a two inch square. This was when she realized how working so small really suited her sense of order and precision. “For some, the restriction would be impossible to work with but for me, it was relaxing, intimate and exact. I was inspired immediately.” She has chosen to keep each piece very small and intimate to encourage the viewer to stand close and really “see” each and every piece for its individual beauty, order and serenity. The exhibit will continue until August 6th and can be viewed during Library hours. EBT and debit cards accepted The Manchester Farmers’ Market began accepting Electronic Benefit (EBT) and Debit Cards in 2009. The program is part of a larger pilot project aimed at placing more fresh, local products into the hands low-income families; while also creating the convenience of an ATM at market for others. This initiative is of particular importance as the costs of food and fuel continue to rise, forcing increasing numbers of Vermonters to seek assistance of EBT. It is hoped that equipping markets with EBT technology will both improve access to nutritious foods and help to increase market traffic, strengthening support for local businesses and farmers. Funding for Manchester Farmers’ Market equipment was provided by the Vermont Resource Conservation and Development Council. Habitat selects first family for Jennifer Lane Following an extensive family selection process, Habitat for Humanity’s Board of Directors has selected Michelle and Randy Lewis, and their son Aiden, of Manchester to live in the first home it will build on Jennifer Lane in Manchester. Both are long-term residents of Manchester. Randy is employed by Mettowee Mill Nursery in Dorset, and Michelle works at the Northshire Day School in Manchester. They have a six year old son, Aiden, and are expecting a baby daughter in July. Habitat provides an opportunity for a hand up, not a hand out. Michelle and Randy will contribute 500 hours of “Sweat quity,”working side by side with volunteers, family and friends, to build their home. Upon completion; they will assume an interest-free mortgage. Mortgage payments will enable Habitat to help more families. Habitat is now planning infrastructure work for the road and land, required before home construction can begin. Board members are working hard to secure financial donations and contributions of building materials and services. The weekly construction

The local group, while it is an affiliate of Habitat International, is locally funded. Vermont affiliates have built over 135 homes and Habitat International has built over 400,000 homes, housing 2 million people in over 90 countries. The success of each affiliate is completely dependent upon generous support from the community. Over 3,000 hours of volunteer labor are contributed on site to build each home. Almost as many volunteer hours are contributed off site to raise awareness and the funds that are needed to purchase building supplies, land, and contract labor. As Board Vice President, Barth VanderEls emphasized, “Habitat only succeeds if there is broad-based community support. In the end, a completed house is more than a home for a hard-working family in need of housing. It is visible testimony of the caring, concern and strength of the community.”

Literacy program offered The Equinox Preservation Trust and the Northshire Bookstore have teamed up to offer the Summer Reading Adventures Program, a literacy program that combines reading and outdoor adventure. Designed to encourage kids to read during the summer, the program encourages children to read a book, meet to discuss it, then hike into the woods of the Equinox Preserve to experience a key element of the book.
