New York Times Notable Novelist Eric Rickstad to Host Writers’ Events

Writers who are serious about publishing are invited to join New York Times “Notable Novelist” Erick Rickstad for two different events at the Inn at Willow Pond in Manchester. On Tuesday, August 23 from 7 to 9 p.m., Rickstad will give a special presentation on “10 Key Questions You Need to Answer to Get Published Today.” This presentation employs Rickstad’s 15 years of publishing knowledge to give insights on how to improve your writing, increase your odds of publication, and avoid mistakes that can kill publishing deals. Cost of the event is $29, and space is limited to 20 attendees. In addition, this fall, Rickstad is launching the Northshire Writers Workshop. The intensive program will help writers improve their writing, while learning how to find agents and write pitch letters. Held at the Inn at Willow Pond

on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from September 6 through October 13, the program will have two offerings this fall – a novel workshop and a memoir workshop. These workshops will be limited to just four writers, with a focus on the art, crafts, and professional pursuit of writing. “I believe so strongly in helping new writers hone their craft, and in The Northshire Writers Workshop, that I left a great job at the Orvis Company to start it,” said Rickstad. “It is the only one of its kind in the area, a first for Southwestern Vermont.” Five percent of the workshop fee will be donated to the Vermont Reads Program, he noted. Rickstad plans to add other workshops for short story writers and hopes these workshops will help bolster the area’s writing community as they bring writers together for serious dis-

cussion and critique of their work. Eric Rickstad is the author of the New York Times notable novel “Reap,” which was published by Viking/Penguin. His latest novel “Found” is pending publication in 2012. Rickstad’s work has appeared in literary and consumer magazines and has earned a Lisman Scholarhip, Whiting Award, Pushcart Prize nomination, Border’s Books New Voices Award, and a Book Sense 76 Independent Booksellers Pick. He holds an MFA from the University of Virginia, and has taught writing at the University of Virginia, Boston University, and at Emerson College’s graduate MFA program. To reserve a space at the August 23rd event, or for more information about the Northshire Writers Workshop, call 802-375-2720.

The Vermont Summer Festival proved to be a winning opportunity for 23-year-old Darragh Kenny of Ireland, who captured the $50,000 Vermont Summer Celebration Grand Prix, presented by Purina, on August 14. Riding Obelix, a 15-year-old Warmblood gelding, Kenny also won the $30,000 Manchester and the Mountains Grand Prix presented by Hand Motors on August 7, and the $10,000 Kenneth Cole Open Welcome Stake on August 12. “I finally broke my jinx,” said Kenny after the round on August 14. “I have never done well in the first round, so I was not planning on this being a great day.” Kenny, who rides out of North Run for Missy Clark and John Brennan in Warren, Vermont, posted his first clear round in the competition riding Tangelo Z, an eight-year-old horse he had ridden for the first time only five days earlier. He followed with another clear round on Wannahave, also a new ride for him. His round on Obelix was the final round on the course, just after Callie Schott guided Wrigley to the top of the leader board. “Callie’s horse is very handy and I wasn’t sure if I could beat her,” said Kenny. “I just went for it.” Obelix cleared all obstacles, shaving a full two seconds off of Schott’s time. Schott finished in second place.

Seventeen-year-old Genevieve Zock of Scarsdale, New York finished third, riding Olinda. On Sunday, August 7, Kenny and Obelix were the dampened but undaunted winners of the $30,000 Manchester and the Mountains Grand Prix, presented by Hand Motors. Overnight rain prompted six riders to scratch their mounts from the class, leaving a starting field of 10 horse and rider combinations. Kenny was the first rider into the ring. He turned in a clear effort that was solid and confident, displaying no concern about the footing. At their return for the jump-off, the pair again rode with confidence. “I have an ex-World Cup horse, so I think I am doing alright,” said Kenny after his win on Obelix. “He has always been a good horse; he has scope and he is careful, and he wants to do it.” Second place on August 7 was claimed by Callie Schott riding Wrigley, while 15-yearold Charlotte Jacobs of East Aurora, New York came in third on Promised Land, in her second-ever Grand Prix event. With more than $750,000 in prize money, the Vermont Summer Festival is the richest sporting event based on purse in the state of Vermont. The six-week show jumping tournament took place from July 6 through August 14 at the Harold Beebe Farm in East Dorset.

Washington County Fair The sun is setting fast on this year’s summer season. The worst of the heat seems to be behind us, football practice has started, retail stores have rolled out their fall lines, and the school year is rapidly approaching. But before we lament then end of summer, there’s a little something called the Washington County Fair next week in the southern portion of the county. An agricultural tradition for 121 years, the Washington County Fair returns to the venerable fairgrounds in Greenwich from Aug. 22 through 28. The fair features a bevy of agricultural exhibits, hundreds of displays, local entertainers, a rodeo, amusement rides and games, 200 vendors, and all sort of delectable food. But for most, nothing beats the pure excitement and adrenaline of the motor sports events. “People really look forward to all the motor sport events,” Fair Manager Mark St. Jacques said. Spectators won’t have to wait long as the Demolition Derby kicks of a week of motor sport events at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22. The derby will feature five heats of 14 cars, as well one “Powder Puff ” heat featuring female participants only. The nostalgic will want to wake early on Wednesday as the Antique Tractor Pulls are scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Later in the day, it’s

the diesel trucks turn at 6 p.m. Thursday will feature the Garden Tractor Pulls and Truck Pulls at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. The real action begins on Saturday with the Sanctioned Tractor Pulls at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 and the Big Rig Truck Pulls at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. Of course the fair features plenty of other entertainment as well, including some oldies but goodies. “We’ve brought back many of the same entertainers from previous years. People really seem to enjoy them,” explained St. Jacques. “They may be the same entertainers, but they bring back new shows every year.” Some of the performers who will return to the fair this year include The Elderly Brothers, Smokey Green, Harold Ford and The Cash Band, the Adirondack Fiddlers, and True Grass, as well as new performers, The Dry Town Drifters and Bobby Dick who will be playing solo. Other popular entertainment that returns for 2011 include the Hot Dog Pig Races, Bob Smith and Reindeer, Buffalo Barfield’s Old-Time County Music Show, and Puddles the Clown. The fair will also feature several new entertainers. “Two of the newest entertainers are ‘Bounce & Ooo La, La’ and ‘Hansen’s Spectacular’,” St. Jacques said. There will also be a children’s

rodeo to compliment the highly popular Rodeo. “The folks from Painted Pony are excited to bring back an even better rodeo this year,” said St. Jacques. Families will once again have the opportunity to get up close and personal with “a whole menageries of animals” in the Farm Land Barn and the fair will feature a number of judged shows and 4H presentations of farm animals all week. In fact, this year features more animals than last year’s fair. “The number of entries is way up this year. The kids work hard all year to show these animals. It’s really what the fair is all about,” St Jacques said. Of course, most families will undoubtedly make it to the midway where children will be attracted by the bright lights of several dozen amusement rides. “We average between 38 and 40 rides each year,” St. Jacques said. “We’ve got something for everyone,” added Dominic Vivona, controller for Amusements of America. Returning this year is the Veritgo, a tower swing that hangs nearly 60 feet in the air. Familiar favorites like the Tornado, the Tilt-a-Whirl, and the Carousel will return to. Since the fair is supposed to be family friendly, Amusements of America will bring a number of rides for younger kids as well. “We tend to focus on smaller rides for the younger kids,” St.

Jacques said. One thing that has not changed is the rates of admission. “All the prices are the same. We are trying to keep it an affordable family fair,” said St. Jacques. Admission to the fair costs $10 for adults and is free for children 14 and under. Parking remains free and there is handicapped parking near the gates and courtesy rides will be offered to those who have a difficult time walking. Special promotions include Carnival Fun Day on Tuesday, Aug. 23 when kids have full access to all the rides for only $20; Senior Citizen Day on Wednesday, Aug. 24 where admission for adults ages 62 and older costs only $5; Children’s Day on Thursday, Aug. 25 when all kids are free; and Family Fun Day on Sunday, Aug. 28 when children will once again have the chance to ride all the amusements they can handle for $20. The fair officially opens at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22 and 9 a.m. the rest of the week. For more information, visit www.washingtoncountyfair.com or read our Washington County Fair Guide in this week’s edition of the Granville Sentinel and The Whitehall Times. “It’s a great chance for people to get together, see each other and catch up,” St. Jacques said, “ as well as meet new people.”
