Lewis Whalen, a student in VAE’s summer Animation Camp 101, runs the camera while learning stop-motion animation techniques. Students from Vermont Arts Exchange’s (VAE) Animation Camp 101 will screen a film they created using stop-motion animation techniques on Monday, September 19 at 6:30 p.m. at VAE’s Sage Street Mill. The 10 students, ranging in age from eight to 10 years old, used clay, line drawings, paperboard animation figures and even themselves to explore stopmotion animation. The technique creates animation by arranging objects, taking a pic-

ture of them, and then repositioning them in very small increments. By repeating the process many times and stringing the pictures together, the illusion of motion is created. Filmmakers Michelle and Jay Cavallaro instructed the students in the technique. “It’s always fascinating how an activity that really is quite tedious can captivate such young kids and get them to focus at such a detailed level for an extended period of time,”

said the Cavallaros. The resulting 20-minute film is a fun and creative compilation of all of the animations, along with interviews of students sharing what they learned. For more information abou the campers’ filmmaking experience, visit affinityeducation.wordpress.com. For more information about VAE’s upcoming classes and workshops, call 802-442-5549 or visit vtartxchange.org.

Homebrew Festival set for September 24 It’s the don’t miss event of the fall for beer aficionados. On Saturday, September 24 from noon to 5 p.m., the Fifth Annual Southern Vermont Homebrew Festival presents the finest in local home brewers at 210 South St. in downtown Bennington. The festival benefits the Bennington Museum. Last year, record crowds swarmed the Bennington Brush Company to sample tasty home brews, enjoy great food, live music and brewing demonstrations. This year’s event will feature music by Hair of the Dog, which was voted “Best Band” by readers of Albany’s TimesUnion in June 2011. Attendees will enjoy tastings throughout the afternoon, get a commemorative tasting glass, observe brewing demonstrations by Hennessy’s Homebrew Emporium and Berkshire County Homebrew Supply, and have the opportunity to win prizes. There’s also the opportunity to talk with the brewers to learn how they got started brewing their own beer, as well as vote for the “People’s Choice” brewer. This year, homebrews will be judged by a Beer Judge

Certification Program (BJCP)certified panel of judges brought together by Chris Post. Among the judges will be guest judge Michael Madison, founder of the Madison Brewing Company of Bennington. Brews will be judged following official guidelines, insuring that there will be more winning brews at the festival than ever before. The winner will have their brew prepared and served at the Madison Brewing Company. In addition, the winner of the People’s Choice award will walk away with a $200 check. Admission to the Homebrew Festival is $35 at the door. Those not tasting – such as designated drivers or those under 21 - pay $10. Children 12 and under are free. The event is sponsored by Madison Brewing Company, Wandering Star Brewery, Berkshire County Homebrew Supply, WEXT Radio and Berkshire Homebrew Association. For more information, visit www.benningtonmuseum.org. The new, larger, site is two blocks souuth of the original Bennington Brush Company location.

Vermont, when a war party of 265 Canadian Mohawks and Abenakis, led by five British and French-Canadian soldiers, materialized from the forest at dawn. There was no time for escape. Prisoners were taken, and the town of Royalton was burned to the ground. “We Go as Captives” is centered on the story of Zadock Steele, a young man who was captured in the raid and forced to march to Canada as a captive of the Mohawks and then the British. He survived two years of imprisonment in Montreal, and then in the infamous Prison Island in the St. Lawrence River. Unaware that the war was about to end, he and his comrades executed a daring escape. Goodwin’s book uses narratives, letters and diaries of Steele to create a riveting story, as well as fresh insight into the Royalton Raid and this period of Vermont history. Neil Goodwin is a trained architect who became a writer/ producer/cinematographer of historical and wildlife documentary programs for Public Television. He has written two previous books, “The Apache Diaries” and “Like a Brother.” Goodwin’s photography has also been on exhibit at the Bridgewater Mill, Vermont Photoplace in Middlebury and other galleries.
