thefreepress Bennington Museum to display historic quilt The quilt that inspired quilters all over the world will begin its annual showing at the Bennington Museum starting September 6. Brought to the museum more than 60 years ago, the Jane Stickle Quilt is only shown for a short time each year due to the fragility of the fabric. Comprised of 169 five-inch blocks, each in different patterns, the quilt contains a remarkable total of 5,602 pieces surrounded by a unique scalloped border. Quilters from around the country and the world plan trips to the region each year to view the 1863 quilt created by a Vermont woman. The quilt’s craftsmanship has been mentioned in numerous quilting books, and is the topic of “Dear Jane, The Two Hundred TwentyFive Patterns from the 1863 Jane A. Stickle Quilt,” by Brenda Papadakis. The quilt will be on display through October 16. In conjunction with the quilt showing, the museum will be hosting events with author Brenda Papadakis. On September 30 at 6:30 p.m., Papadakis will give a lecture on her book, with stories of her research on Jane Stickle’s life, as well as the adventures inspired by the
popularity of “Dear Jane.” The presentation will also include pictures of quilts made by friends of Jane from around the world. Cost of the event is $7 for non-members, and $5 for members of the museum. Papadakis will hold quilting workshops on Saturday and Sunday, October 1 and 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Ada Paresky Education Center at the museum. Jane Stickle was born Jane Blakely on April 8, 1817 in Shaftsbury, Vermont. She married Walter Stickle sometime before 1850, but they did not have a family of their own. The couple did, however, take responsibility for at least three other children. In an 1860’s census, Jane Stickle was listed as a 43-year-old farmer living alone. She eventually reunited with her husband, but during her time on her own, she lovingly created what is now known as the Jane Stickle Quilt. In recognition of the turbulent time of the Civil Warn, she carefully embroidered “In War Time 1863” into the quilt. The Jane Stickle Quilt can be viewed with regular museum admission. Enjoy the last four days of the Great Schaghticoke Fair Annual event offers fun for the entire family The Great Schaghticoke Fair continues September 2 through 5 with shows, fun and food starting at noon each day. New acts this year include the White Tigers, Great Lakes Timber Show, Mutts Gone Nutts and the Grandpa Cratchet Farmer’s Market Show. One exciting new show is Tonny Petersen’s Hell Drivers, a car thrill show in which the audience is transported to a real life Hollywood “smash and crash” experience. The team includes some of the nation’s top automotive stunt drivers, who perform exciting crashes and bumper to bumper high speed chases. Also new this year is Vicenta’s White Tiger Show, which features 25-year-old Vicenta Page, formerly of the Ringling Brothers/Barnum & Bailey Circus. The lifelong circus performer uses six Royal White Bengal Tigers in her act. Lumberjack shows are popular on cable TV, and this year the Schaghticoke Fair will present the Great Lakes Timber Show, which features chainsaw carving, axe throwing, wood chopping, two-man crosscut sawing and log rolling in a familyfriendly show. The Park Stage will feature country superstar Jamie O’Neal, the Kentucky Headhunters, Hair of the Dog, and the Back 40 Band.
Also on the Park Stage is the Rising Stars competition. The contest includes two divisions: one for children up to 12 years old; and an adult division for those 13 years old and up. “It’s a great opportunity for young people to get up in front of a large audience with a professional sound system,” said organizer Jim Staats. The competition follows the same rules as the one at the New York State Fair, and contestants who place high enough are invited to compete at the New York State Fair’s competition. The fair also features a rodeo, demolition derby, horse shows, 4-H exhibits, Price of New York produce, chickens, goats, sheep and cows for a complete family learning experience. Don’t miss the midway with its giant Ferris wheel, fun houses and games of chance. In one major change this year, the fair is offering separate charges for admission and rides on the Midway. Adult general admission Thursday through Monday is $10. All ride tickets can be purchased individually at the Midway, or a wrist band for unlimited rides can be purchased for $18. T. Namaya to present “Vermont My Home” The man described by The Aquarian as “The high wire performance artist of the spoken word,” T. Namaya, will perform at the Bennignton Center for the Arts on Sunday, September 11 at 2 p.m. An international performance artist, story-teller, and humorist, Namaya has toured the world with performances in theaters and clubs in Europe, Asia, the United States, and during the past year in Palestine and Syria. “Vermont My Home: A Celebration” is a multimedia performance based on Namaya’s stories, music, songs, and photographs of Vermont. Said Namaya, “The show is a celebration of my home on Blue Heron Pond, characters like my neighbor Josiah, the wayward monk Li Pon, and this five-season paradise we call Vermont. It is a story about traveling around the world, but always returning home to these green mountains.” Namaya’s recent play “Beatnik Cafe: A Musical Revue of the Jazz Beat Generation” received excellent reviews in New York City and Boston. He has written three books of poetry, “Eros to Godhead,” “God Sex Politics,” “Vermont My Home,” and a memoir “Journal of the Plague: Living and working with AIDS,” which is based on working with endstage AIDS patients in a VA hospital in New York City. Artist Alexis Grabowski to open new exhibit at Salem Art Works Three years of living in Washington County, New York has fueled artist Alexis Grabowski with enough inspiration to create an entire new body of work. Her new exhibit opens on Saturday, September 3 from 5 to 9 p.m. in the Barn 2 Gallery at Salem Art Works on Carey Road in Salem. Artist Emma Copley’s work will be featured in the Carey House Gallery. Both exhibits will be on display until October 2. The exhibit is both a culmination and a transition for Grabowski, who is leaving the area after three years and moving to Brooklyn. “I’ve been so inspired by the landscape and people here,” she commented. “My work has really evolved. Over the past three years, I’ve grown to have a deep love of this place.” Grabowski received grants from the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC)

and the Puffin Foundation to create this new work. To get started, she toured the countryside and interviewed several long-time residents to help her create a sense of place. Previously, her work came from two different styles. She had done commissioned oil portraits, but was also creating more abstract work based in patterns. As she worked on the Washington County pieces, she found that her two disparate styles began to converge into something new. “I started giving the patterns layers of context from Washington County,” she explained. “I really became invested in the imagery of this area.” Grabowski received her BFA from the NYSCC School of Art & Design at Alfred University. She came to Salem as an intern at Salem Art Works, and ended up serving as associate director from 2008-2009. Alexis Grabowski’s work will be exhibited in the Salem Art Work’s Barn 2 Gallery. The gallery will also feature an “Intern and Emerging Artists” exhibition. In SAW’s Carey House Gallery, there will be a new exhibit by Irish-born artist Emma Copley. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, Copley’s work plies imagery from her past and present. Vendors Wanted for Carving Day
Vendors are invited to be part of the upcoming “Official” Vermont Pumpkin Carving Day Event on October 15th at Equinox Valley Nursery from 11am-4pm. The cost is free. Space is limited. The Mountain School at Winhall and its Parent Advisory Board are holding a 6-Team Double Elimination Softball Tournament and Pasta Supper benefit on Sunday, September 11 for Teri and Derek Andersen’s Turning Point Pottery Studio, which was destroyed by fire on July 28. Teams need 10 or more players, and each player pays $10 to participate. VINS Mountain Wine and Cheese Festival The Vermont Institute of Natural Science (VINS) will host the Fourth Annual Mountain Wine and Cheese Festival on Saturday, September 10 from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the VINS Nature Center in Quechee, VT. Delectables from local restaurants and cheesemakers and more than 70 varieties of wine will be featured, along with VINS raptor exhibits, a live bird program, live entertainment and a silent auction. This celebration of wine and nature will benefit the Vermont Institute of Natural Science. Wine enthusiasts and novices alike will have the opportunity to sample wine from Farrell Wine Distributors. School welcomes new teachers Maple Street School is pleased to announce three new faculty members: Whitney Bellingham (2nd grade), Geoff Chamberlain (6th grade) and Lisa Edry (science teacher). Whitney Bellingham received her bachelors degree in Elementary Education from the University of Vermont, and has worked in primary schools in California and Vermont. She served on the Board of Directors at The Little School in Weston and has spent the last two years working with the elderly in their homes. Geoffrey Chamberlain will join the faculty as sixth grade Homeroom and Upper School History and Math Teacher. Geoff has a B.A. from Middlebury College and an M.A. from
Castleton State College. He has worked in many educational settings in Vermont, including Burr and Burton Academy, Manchester Elementary School, and Stratton Mountain School. Geoff also served as an international teacher in the World Teach program in Skonnakhon, Thailand. Lisa Edry will be the seventh grade homeroom teacher and science teacher for the 2011-2012 school year. She has taught science at levels from middle school to university in the U.S. and Britain. Lisa was a lecturer and tutor at West Oxfordshire College in the UK as well as at Hartpury Agricultural College. She has a masters degree in teaching and an undergraduate degree in equestrian studies.
Maple Leaf Half Marathon route set Nearly 1,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in the Maple Leaf Half Marathon and 5K on Saturday, September 10. In advance of the race, the Manchester Lions Club and Manchester and the Mountains Chamber of Commerce have announced the route and road closures. The organizers thank drivers for their cooperation and the work of the Manchester Police Department and the Bennington Sheriff ’s Department in keeping the runners safe. The 13.1 mile Half Marathon begins at 9 a.m. at the Dana Thompson Recreation Center and travels on Route 30 to the intersection of Route 7A. Traffic on Saturday morning from the Manchester Recreation Center to the Mark Skinner Library will be disrupted briefly. The following are the anticipated delays: • Route 30 from Dana Thompson Memorial Park to the center of town will be closed from 9:00 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. • Route 7A northbound from the Equinox Hotel to the center of town will be detoured on Union Street from 8:50 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. • Route 7A southbound from the center of town to the Equinox Hotel will be closed
from 9:05 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. From 9:15 a.m., one lane of traffic will be allowed on this same stretch of road. • Manchester West Road will be limited to southbound traffic only from 9:15 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. Detoured traffic will be sent on Route 7A north when the runners clear after 9:30 a.m. When overtaking or passing runners, organizers ask drivers to be cautious. This year’s race is the largest in recent history. Race participants can pick up their race packets at the Perfect Wife Restaurant on Routes 11/30 on Friday, September 9 from 4 to 8 p.m. The restaurant is hosting a special dinner for racers and their families. Packets may also be picked up at the Rec Center between 7 and 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 10. Participants are urged to arrive early. Registrations for both individual runners and teams are open until the morning of the race. Arlington artist to exhibit at library An opening reception for artist Jessica Phillips new exhibit “Summer in New England: Recent Ceramic Works” will be held at the Canfield Gallery in Arlington on Saturday, September 3 from 3 to 5 p.m. Freelance photographer turned ceramic artist Jessica Phillips earned her degree in studio art from UNCWilmington, and then moved to Arlington, Vermont where she converted a barn behind her house into a ceramic studio. This new series of work is based on her summer travels through New England. “My current series is inspired by nature and incorporates traditional shapes with modern dynamic glazes,”
she explains. “I have tried to capture the essence of summer in New England by combining texture, shape and color to create these celebratory pieces.” The Canfield Gallery is located in the Martha Canfield Library on East Arlington Road. Dorset photographer Jack Stannard to open exhibit The Dorset Public Library will host a coffee reception for Dorset native and local photographer Jack Stannard on Saturday, September 3 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to open his exhibit of wildlife photography. “I really love the outdoors and enjoy nature, so that’s what I photograph,” says Stannard. “My pictures are mostly wild animals, birds, wild flowers and unusual species, such as the albino red-tailed hawk I photographed in Dorset Hollow.”
Stannard uses a Sony Alpha digital camera, which can take long shots over a considerable distance, enabling him to photograph birds and animals in their setting without spooking them. The reception is free and open to the public. The show will continue through the month of September. All works on display are for sale, and the art sales will benefit the library. Events at Northshire Bookstore Next week, Northshire Bookstore presents a debut novelist and a definitive biography of Vermont’s own Ethan Allen. On Thursday, September 8 at 7 p.m., author and poet Rebecca Wolff presents her debut novel “The Beginners.” The author of three award-winning collections of poems, Wolff ’s work has been compared to Sylvia Plath. Her poetic origins come into play in “The Beginnners,” in prose that gleams with energy, ingenuity and intelligence. “The Beginners” is inspired by Wolff’s own family history. She is a descendant of Rebecca Nurse, a woman hung in the Salem Witch
Trials. Boldly original and enchantingly beautiful, her novel is an exploration in the ambiguous overlap between fact and fiction, the real and the supernatural.
