Welcome to WIM21! We are so happy to have been able to put on a conference for you all in what has been a very difficult year. It has been a challenge for the committee this year, as we have not been in the same room throughout the whole planning process, but we hope you appreciate our efforts to bring the spirit of an in-person conference to you this March. We have such an amazing line-up this year, it's our biggest yet and I hope you learn some valuable skills, make connections and have fun hearing some inspiring. people talk about their fascinating lives! The Women in Media Conference was founded in 2016 by a group of students at the University of Manchester who, even at student level, noticed that the media industry was dominated by men. Something needed to change! So, in 2016, the first Women in Media Conference was held in Manchester to celebrate the achievements of women within the industry. Our aim has always been to educate and inspire young people wishing to have a career in the media, building upon the skills they need to succeed and connecting them with a network of inspiring women. The conference also aims to address ongoing intersectional issues, including gender, class, and racial imbalances within the media. Each year we invite influential women from a wide range of backgrounds to share their stories and expertise, as well as the challenges they have faced in the industry. WIM2021, has been organised and run by an all-student team from the Manchester Media Group, the media wing of the University of Manchester Students' Union. It is a celebration of the successes of women from a wide range of sectors within the media industry. We are excited to bring you panels and talks from women in sectors from politics, and radio to reporting for children, working behind the scenes and hearing from women working at the forefront of diversity campaigns within the media We welcome delegates of all genders to WIM21 and encourage you to explore what's on offer this year and discover the wide range of career opportunities available within the media industry. We want you to feel empowered to break through whatever barriers are stopping you from reaching your goals! On behalf of the whole WIM21 committee, thank you so much for attending this years virtual conference and donating to our two amazing charities: Once a Month & MASH. We are so excited to get started!

Hannah Tinker

I started out on the media side of the music industry a few years ago, while I was at university. I was working at a supermarket while studying and started doing odd voluntary bits to angle myself towards the creative industry, like writing for Gigslutz, I built a website for a friend's band (now defunct), helped out musician friends with social media and was a chief organiser for Oxjam Leeds. Carried on working for a supermarket then got a very dull desk job after university and started writing for MCR Live, a blog and radio station. After a few months or so, I was invited to become the Editor for the site part-time - quickly left the desk job and went into bar work alongside this. Then a few months later was offered a full-time position as Editor, Social Media Coordinator and a general radio/sessions Assistant. Sadly, in early 2019, MCR Live closed and I was then offered a role as counter/bar staff at Wilderness Record Store. A couple of months in, I presented my previous experience and industry knowledge to the team behind it and now I'm the Marketing and Programming Manager for the store and venue, which is a very hands-on role. Alongside this, I'm the co-founder of Fair Play Festival, which stems around having an equal and fair billing across gender, sexuality and race and manage the electronic duo YAANG..

She advocates for increased diversity in the technical side of live events through mentoring and blogging for Soundgirls.org. She has a particular passion for understanding how things work, travel, and good coffee.

Her upcoming book, Beasts Before Us: The Untold Story of Mammal Origins and Evolution (Bloomsbury Sigma), is publishing 10th June 2021.

Beth O'Leary These days I mostly write about, teach and do ecology, but I also do wider science and environmental writing and I am not one single thing. What I do is diverse - I think you have to diversity when you are a working class female striving to follow your own path and achieve important but often seemingly undervalued things [i.e. conservation and environmental journalism] in two of the least diverse industries where so many people seem to be living with appalling working conditions [zero hours, short contracts, unpaid, low paid]. And in my experience the industry’s attitude doesn’t get easier when you become a mum.

"Hello! I'm Eva, Illustrator from Brighton UK. Drawing is my passion - it's how I've spent the last 22 years of my life, and I'm very lucky to say it became my full-time career in 2020. I've worked continuously for the past 2 years, dedicating my time and care into building the business I run today, shipping out orders worldwide! Everything is designed by me, ethically produced in the UK and shipped out by either myself or my parents from our home, in 100% recyclable and biodegradable packaging. Alongside this, I'm also a full-time Brighton University student, currently in my 2nd year studying BA Illustration. I love creating products that people feel excited about purchasing, and very passionate about creating art that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also accessible and affordable"
