Welcome to the 3rd edition of Mandarin Leader. I want to open this letter by congratulating this year’s honorees – you have earned your way into Mandarin Leader by being massively creative and/or uniquely generous with your time and energy, which are the primary criteria our advisory board consider for each nomination. Just being famous or wealthy is not enough, Mandarin Leader exists to recognize individuals who are pioneers in their field, taking career risks, and realizing their greater value to society. To cite specific examples of leadership amongst this year’s honorees would push this welcome letter to pages; however, one thing all this year’s honorees have in common is persistence, hard work, and an understanding that progress mostly rests on one’s own shoulders. Our Featured Honoree this year is Yue-Sai Kan, whose China Beauty Charity Fund is exemplary in mission and execution, demonstrating the altruism that exists amongst Chinese in the U.S., and a model for partnership between the U.S. and China. As Publisher, what I have learned in this year’s Mandarin Leader just how big a contribution Chinese make to the U.S., and whether viewed as consumer, voter, performer, entrepreneur, or candidate, Chinese are one of the most self-reliant, hard-working, and accomplished demographic segments in the U.S. To next year’s honorees, a very high standard has now been set. I am deeply proud to present another year of Mandarin Leader – a platform designed explicitly to recognize creative and altruistic individuals of Chinese heritage in the U.S. From science to business to the arts, this annual index showcases just a small representation of the many contributions Chinese make to this country in their respective fields. Hats off to this year’s nominees, you make us all so proud. I also want to thank this year’s nominators and partners for who make this undertaking possible. You know who's who in your city, and in your field, which enhances our ability to realize Mandarin Leader’s mission. There are almost 4M people of Chinese heritage living in the U.S. working across every imaginable industry, in every state. This presents a significant challenge for Mandarin Leader each year as we endeavor to identify those with exceptional creative talents and/ or notable generosity. If you share our mission, I encourage you to contact us to discuss partnership, and note that it's not too early to nominate someone for 2019. Hamilton Chang

I am incredibly honored to serve as an Advisory Board Member of Mandarin Leader to shape the strategic direction of the magazine and to lead the nominations in Northeast. My selection criterion is simple: Leaders with noble callings to do something good for the society and not expecting anything in return. In this issue, you will discover a beloved philanthropist who has been recognized by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon for her service to better women’s education, a dedicated lawyer who quietly gives free legal service consistently for 10 years at an immigrant legal clinic, and a TV news anchor who is speaking up to strengthen US-EU relationship at the Brussels Forum. As you turn each page, you will be inspired. I want to encourage you to take action and to play a bigger role in your surroundings. I leave you with this quote: “If your action inspires others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” We are all leaders! Conlyn Chan

The Yue-Sai Kan China Beauty Charity Fund: Dedicated to the betterment and advancement of women and children in China
33
The Yue-Sai Kan China Beauty Charity Fund (CBCF) was established in 2011 in honor of Yue-Sai Kan by the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation, one of the most important and trusted charitable foundations in China. Madam Soong Ching Ling, the late wife of the founder of modern-day China Dr. Sun Yat Sen, devoted her life to the betterment of women and children in China. During her lifetime, she founded schools, hospitals and also hosted many cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.
Y
ue-Sai Kan has been actively involved with charities and the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation for
many years. To recognize the many charitable and social contributions Yue-Sai has made to the Chinese society over the past few decades, the Shanghai Soong Ching Ling Foundation sanctioned the establishment of the Yue-Sai Kan China Beauty Charity Fund. Yue-Sai was appointed Ambassador and Chairman of the Governing Committee. This is a tremendous and rare honor for a non-Chinese citizen (Yue-Sai is a citizen of the United States).
34
The CBCF supports the following areas: • Relevant charitable activities of Miss Universe China • International academic and cultural exchanges as they relate to health and education • TV and film productions and education in this area • Education of the aesthetics of beauty and the welfare of women and children • Charitable projects for women and children, e.g. The Shanghai Soong Qing Ling Foundation’s Safety for Mother and Child Program • Finance other public welfare work which conforms to the aims of the CBCF as approved by the Governing Committee

“The Yue-Sai Kan China Beauty Charity Fund’s mission is to improve the lives of women and children through sustainable economic growth; it aims to foster international understanding through cultural and academic exchanges by providing grants to empower Chinese women to achieve equality, autonomy and to fulfill their potential.” Yue-Sai Kan
A number of high-profile events over recent years illustrate the mission and accomplishments of CBCF: 2012 Miss Universe China Charity Gala As part of the Shanghai International Film Festival and to showcase 2012 Miss Universe China Pageant contestants, the CBCF held a charity gala at the Pearl Oriental Riverside Hotel and Convention Center in Shanghai on June 18, 2012. About 1,000 people, including celebrities and high level business executives attended the event. The purpose of the event was to raise funds and awareness to support maternity health in rural areas in China. The results exceeded expectations and was the most successful fundraiser of CBCF to date. 2013 China Fashion Night On September 6, 2013 the CBCF held its first annual U.S. gala at the Pierre Hotel in New York City, which was an opportunity to introduce Guo Pei to American audiences with a solo fashion show. Vivienne Tam also agreed to lend her support as the evening’s guest of honor. With these two internationally renowned designers in attendance, the gala was a complete fundraising success. Proceeds of the night went to a scholarship program at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) to benefit Chinese students. The evening included partnership with Fashion 4 Development (F4D), which works closely with the UN Secretary-General’s Office as part of its “Every Woman, Every Child” initiative, and lends support in preserving and utilizing traditional Chinese folk art techniques and spearheads sustainable economic growth in poor Chinese regions. 2017 China Fashion Gala The 2017 China Fashion Gala was a relaunch of China Fashion Night. The CBCF hosted the event in partnership with China Institute on May 7th at Tribeca 360 in New York City. Including guests of honor Chen Man and Carmen Dell’Orefice, over 300 guests from around the world came to support this event and raised nearly $350,000. The China Fashion Gala is a platform to showcase creativity inspired by China: to raise funds to support talented emerging designers; and to recognize individuals whose outstanding contributions have helped position Chinese design and aesthetics at the forefront of fashion on a global scale. Gala proceeds were used to fund the CBCF Scholarship at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and benefit China Institute’s new Fashion Design Competition. Successful Launch of a New Initiative in 2017 In June 2017 the CBCF successfully launched the Executive Education in Sustainable Fashion initiative,
partnering with China Fashion Forum, the largest fashion forum in China boasting hundreds of members. The program was created under the leadership of Yue-Sai Kan to inspire and push the progress of sustainability growth in fashion and life-style industries in China. from June 5 to 8, 2017, six executives from China participated the Sustainability in Fashion and Textiles class at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), which was a four-day series of lectures, discussions, panels, and hands-on workshops focusing on sustainability and technology in fashion and textiles. 5 Students Receive the China Beauty Charity Fund Scholarship In October 2017 five students from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) received the CBCF Scholarship of $10,000 each. The scholarship is designed to afford talented creatives from China the opportunity to study at FIT in NYC. Scholarships were awarded to the following FIT students: Dafeng Liu, Fashion Design (Special Occasion), Jackline Raggi, Visual Presentation and Exhibition Design, Wenhui Yue, Fashion Design, Yiche Li, Fabric Styling, Xiaoyu Zhang, Fashion Design. Over the years, a total of 11 Chinese students have benefited from the scholarship program. 2018 China Fashion Gala For the second year in a row, the CBCF is partnering with China Institute to host the China Fashion Gala on May 4th 2018 at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. The program features a photo exhibition of Chinese photographer Sun Jun, a full-length couture fashion show by Chinese fashion designer Grace Chen and a seated dinner. The China Fashion Gala continues to serve as a platform to: showcase creativity inspired by China, raise funds to support talented emerging designers; and to recognize individuals whose outstanding contributions have helped position Chinese design and aesthetics at the forefront of fashion on a global scale. What was your first job, and how did it shape your life? Working in my parent’s restaurant. I learned to appreciate a good work ethic, the sacrifice of hard work for family, and the proper way to peel a prawn! What keeps you awake at night? It used to be work-related stress...now it is bingewatching the latest popular series. What books are currently on your bedside? More like Oscar nominated DVDs for Academy Awards voting. When do you feel most free? When I am “in the moment” of artistic creativity. What was the last present you received? The news of my close friend’s remission from cancer. What’s your view on money? Money is not an objective or goal. It is a tool or vehicle to help you towards real goals, because money cannot buy happiness.

Tony Chi 季裕棠 Principal and Founder tonychi studio
Tony Chi is the globally-renowned hospitality guru and founder of tonychi, an award-winning studio based in New York. For over thirty years, he has been bringing visionary insights and a holistic, hands-on approach to developing ground-up, high velocity design projects that transform global business. With a wide-ranging portfolio that includes iconic names, like the Rosewood London, Intercontinental Geneva, Andaz Tokyo, Park Hyatt Shanghai, Rosewood Hong Kong and New York’s Carlyle Hotel in the making, Chi’s properties harness the intangible allure of both space and place, where cultures and communities converge, and dualities contrast and interact to create unforgettably unique, transcendent and emotional experiences.
What is the best piece of advice a parent gave you? “Don’t be the biggest tree in the forest,” my father once said. “Otherwise, when the wind blows, you’ll make too much noise.” What’s one trend you feel most people overlook? I don’t believe in trends in the way of life. I look at the evolutionary process, where yesterday informs today and today informs tomorrow. In the face of so many global challenges, what gives you optimism? Hope. Hope for better projects, hope for purpose, hope to be a better person. Hope is one of the most crucial things for me. What books are currently on your bedside table? The Three-Body Problem by Chinese sci-fi author Cixin Liu and No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai Tell us something that is true, that almost nobody agrees with you on? I believe in the design business, where design comes first and business comes second. 99% of people don’t agree with me. What was your proudest moment in the past year? How did you do it? I found myself again. How? By working on the minuses, not the additions. We spend too much time adding things in life, the best is when we learn to subtract. 39
