DESK OF Mr & Mrs King HARVEST Overflow In mid-winter of 1964, a young southern farming couple, Eugene and Mattie, sat at their small rectangular kitchen table with fresh coffee and a slightly worn tablet. The evening was early, even though they had already eaten dinner, and had plans of going for a drive after they planned their spring and summer garden. As Mattie wrote down the details of what they discussed and the seeds that they would need, Eugene suggested that they go ahead and plan for their fall garden as well. Mattie smiled, as she knew it would make things easier for her to know what was needed when she placed the order for the seeds, fertilizer and other material. In addition, it gave her a better picture of what the year would consist of and what other projects they could take on.

As she finished writing, Eugene starred quietly at the paper saying, “You know, it took me some time to learn this from my Dad. It’s like he could look ahead and tell what crops would be needed. Not just what the family would use, but what other folks were gonna want and need…Daddy would always say ‘a good garden’s not based on how much you grow, but the farmer that knows when to plant, when to harvest and what to do in between the two.’ ” Eugene took a deep sigh, grabbed his hat and said, “Let’s go” as he walked towards the door and turned the porch light on. Mattie slid away from the table and made her way to the closet. As she put her coat on she grinned, handed Eugene his coat and asked, “Just when did you become so much like your Daddy?” He kissed her forehead replying, “Daddy made that decision before I got here.” Their drive was proving that the winter months made for much quieter evenings, as there were no neighbors sitting on their porches or children running through clothes on the line. Eugene seemed to be putting on a full show as he sang along to the Four Tops’ new song. Just as he made it to the second set of Baby I Need Your Loving, Mattie began to reflect on how much had changed over the years. Here she was, a girl from Sage County who had only helped her mom pickle cucumbers given to them by their neighbor, to now being one of the largest farm owners in town. She remembered one of the earlier seasons where she was just learning the value of planting properly. Being careful to do it just right, Mattie diligently kept planting until she felt a stillness from Eugene. When she stopped to see what he was gazing at, she looked out and saw just how large their farmland was. Never really considering the breadth of their area, she said with amazement “wow, I never realized how much land we had? And to think we’ve sowed nearly all of it!” At that moment, she could hear the gears shift in their pickup truck, and Eugene had finished his song. Mattie pushed her sun visor up, as the sun was very faint. “You passed the turn Gene.” He smiled and said nothing as they pulled up to a vacant building in the middle of town. Eugene hopped out of the truck quickly, leaving the engine running and headlights on. He opened Mattie’s door, grabbed her hand and told her how he had been looking at this building for sale. “Sharon was talking about this place at the salon yesterday. She said her neighbor owns this location and a good stretch of land down Highway 11. Sharon said something about him moving east and not being able to keep any of his properties.” Eugene poked around at the windows a bit more, straightened Mattie’s coat collar and said, “Let’s go. Looks like we’ll be giving Sharon a call tonight.” To Be Continued…

HOW DO YOU UTILIZE YOUR DIFFERENCES INDIVIDUALLY AS ASSETS TO YOU AS A COUPLE? We eb and flow. What one isn’t the best at the other covers and visa versa. WHAT DOES PARTNERSHIP IN MARRIAGE MEAN TO YOU? Partnership to us means allowing each other to shine in our own way, respecting who we are as individuals and collectively. At the beginning of our marriage we had to learn the hard way that our expectations for each other will not always turn out to be our reality. When we learned to embrace our differences and celebrate our unique attributes, we understood true partnership. AS PARTNERS IN MARRIAGE, WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE GOAL? WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO SACRIFICE TO OBTAIN IT? We actually have two. To please God and leave a legacy of wealth for our children, grandchildren and generations after us. The ultimate goal for anyone on this earth should be to please God and leaving a legacy means that you leave an imprint on this world even after you are long gone. We have sacrificed our comfort, our ego, our fears, and so much more to accomplish our goals. As the Apostle Paul so eloquently stated, we have not apprehended. We will always strive for these two Goals.

WHO IS THE MR AND MRS THAT PEOPLE DON’T GET TO SEE? People don’t always see our goofy side. We love to joke, laugh, look at funny youtube videos or repeat our favorite lines to movies over and over again. Laughter is good for the soul. When you loose laughter in your marriage its time to re-evaluate and refocus. We encourage all couples to never forget the fun they had at the beginning and keep that fun alive! WHAT IS A SCRIPTURE THAT YOU BOTH USE AS YOU FUNCTION IN A PARTNERSHIP? Jeremiah 29:11 is a key scripture for our marriage and our family as a whole. We recognize that God had major plans for us, before we were even a thought. So when things get tough we hold on to the fact that God still has a plan and we have hope, so we press.

SHE’S BOLD! SHE’S FIERCE! SHE’S FORGIVEN

P owerlifting It’s amazing to me to watch men and women train their bodies and mental aptitudes for weightlifting and powerlifting. While I don’t understand the reason for it apart from competition and pleasure, I applaud their determination. As much admiration as these powerlifters get for their strengths, there is much wonderment for the stories like the less endowed mother who lifted a car to free her child pinned underneath. How is it that someone who is recognized for their strength and proof of diligence in their training can have their abilities matched by someone who pales in comparison? The mother was resilient because she had a compelling reason. There are times when our faith is tested, and we have to do some powerlifting ourselves. When I was younger, I witnessed a friend of mine go through a difficult period with her family. I asked my mom how is it that some people have to go through so much, and others don’t. At the time, I didn’t understand because I had never experienced adversity on a level that I perceived to be so great. My mom simply told me that everyone has to bear weight at some point in their lives.

LOVE MARRIAGE & PARTNERSHIP | THE REVIEW

Faith It’s important to remember that the amount of the weight is irrelevant. The way you choose to respond to it is what matters. I took what my mom said to heart, but a short while after that, I had to apply the faith that she was talking about. Unexpectedly, the same friend that I had asked my mom about had passed. Have you ever admired someone because they were so strong (emotionally, physically, or mentally), so smart, so talented, or so successful? I have. I had to learn that we actually admire these “powerlifters” not for what they accomplish, but their discipline to fulfill it. When someone operates in their gifting, they discipline themselves to make what is perceived as amazing seem so natural. Like the mother with the child pinned underneath the car, your circumstance(s) may require you to activate a faith that you didn’t know you had. Understand that you must discipline yourself to regularly exercise your faith, but also know that there is a greater POWER in you that allows you to LIFT things beyond your own strength. The beautiful thing about this power is that it doesn’t just give you the ability to lift, move, or carry. THIS power gives you the ability to overcome.

Tawana JOHNSON MEET

I am TAWANA JOHNSON, a servant leader and the reigning MS. MAGNOLIA STATE PLUS AMERICA FOR 2019. As an advocate of social change, I hope to provide relief, support and hope to those I encounter; specifically, single parents through my platform.

Ms.

MAGNOLIA STATE

Plus America

Being raised by a single mother gave me a bird’s eye view of strength in its rawest form. I have been guided, prayed for and supported by a cadre of women who exude character, strength, integrity and faith with an emphasis on community. I adopted those core values, successfully applied them to my life and have attempted to pass them on to young women who are also single mothers. The seed that was planted in me bloomed into Divine Jewelz Inc. which is a nonprofit organization I founded in 2009. The mission of Divine Jewelz Inc. is to empower and aid single parents through life’s most difficult times. This includes financial emergency assistance, childcare assistance, job interview readiness and other essential resources. Just recently, I have added another facet to my organization. Following the death of my first cousin who was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in June 2018, I saw another need within my family and community. Divine Jewelz Inc. is now a support system for single parents with a cancer diagnosis during their treatment and beyond. Aiding with day-to-day needs such as transportation to and from appointments, homework assistance for minor children, drop off and pick up for extracurricular activities and household chores. This is to ensure that the focus is on getting better while providing much-needed support to the patient’s family. As written in Luke 12:48, “To whom much is given, much will be required”. I am blessed so my focus is on being a blessing to others. www.facebook.com/MsMagnoliaState2019/

Andrea BLACKLEY MEET

ANDREA BLACKLEY is the owner and designer of the innovative clothing brand, AB Originals. Since she was 8 years old, she’s always had a keen eye, and love for style and fashion. Being raised by a fashionable single mother, one of her favorite moments of her childhood, is when her mom would go “Spring Shopping” for new clothes. It would always be a big event because Andrea would be spontaneously surprised after coming home from school, and finding a bed full of clothes laid out for her. “Christmas in Spring”, as she called it, was always one of her favorite times of the year. As an only child, this was definitely one of the benefits of not having any siblings. But it was also the birth of her infatuation with fashion.

Andrea has a Marketing degree from the prestigious college, Xavier University of Louisiana. Two years after graduating in 1999, she became a 3rd grade school teacher for 8 years. During her 4th year teaching, in 2004, Andrea became pregnant with an amazing son, Nicholas. When he was born, her creativity came alive, as she was not satisfied with the clothing choices that were available for infant and toddler boys. It was during this time, that her son’s father purchased a sewing machine for her, where she began to make custom belts for Nicholas, because she could never find any that she liked. She had not taken any sewing lessons of any kind, but she read the directions for the machine, and made some imperfect magic happen. She even began to sell belts to other parents who craved for uniqueness, but soon realized that she needed to learn how to sew. It was December of 2006, when she enrolled in a basic sewing class, to learn how to make tote bags. This was extremely exciting, because as a teacher, tote bags were a necessity. Of course, once Andrea had the basic bags mastered, she began to put her own twist on the totes and created unique designs. Yes, she began selling those too, even to her students. Learning the basics of sewing, was the door to creating clothing. However, that didn’t happen for 8 years. In 2009, Andrea found the industry of Network Marketing, which took all her time, and there was none available for sewing. Fashion was still a passion, however, creating it was not on her agenda. It wasn’t until 2013, when Andrea had moved from her native city of Houston, Texas to Tampa, Florida, that her creativity would come alive again. This was when AB Originals was born. Due to her income falling drastically in her business, she was forced to become resourceful. This was one of the toughest seasons of her life, but it was also when her Faith in God, had a rebirth, and she began to operate in her gift. A good friend of hers taught her how to make a blazer and a pair of leggings. From there, AB Originals began to spread its wings, and designs were created for women who desired to not look like everyone else. As women began to see, love, purchase, and proudly wear her designs, once again, she was distracted from her gift, and went back into the industry of Network Marketing, for 3 more years, simply because she wasn’t earning enough income by designing alone. During this time, she had moved back to Houston, to rebuild her life, only to be led back to her gift in 2016. She started sewing again, making handbags and outfits for herself, but she was not yet focused on bringing AB Originals back on to the scene yet. When the movie Black Panther came out in February of 2018, it was mandatory for her to have something original for her son and herself, to view the film. That is when she created her first “remixed” denim jacket, and ABO was back in full effect. Since then, she has been solely committed to building her brand. Creating one of a kind designs for women, from size 2 to 16. Operating in God’s gift has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences of her life, and this is just the beginning. To see her passion become her work, is a divine orchestration. Having the courage to pursue her dreams, can only yield an undeniable harvest. Not a harvest of just money, but one of contentment, joy, creativity, and the ability to bring a stylish confidence to women, all around the world. As Proverbs 18:16 says, “A man’s gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” She believes deeply in the Word, and operates in a faith, that she hopes is pleasing to God, because only what she does for Him, will last. Dismiss every misconception that you have about Dating, be open-minded, and expect to have fun! Who says that Dating has to be anything other than what you want it to be? No one- it’s up to you how creative you want your predetermined moment of eminence to be! It is also important to note that Dating is for anyone: married, engaged, and yes, SINGLE.

PARIS NIGHT WITHOUT LEAVING HOME

You decorate your home like a restaurant in a foreign country. Make it cheesy as possible while keeping it looking nice. Decorating is easy, use construction paper and things you find at a craft store. Then you have a friend dress up like a waiter and speak in the accent of that country.

GO FLY A KITE

Flying a kite! Sounds a little silly, but hey, we got to let the fun inside of us out sometime, and why not do it with the one we love.

GIVE BACK

Giving back to the community can bring you and your date closer together. A sense of peace and good fortune will bond you. Whether you opt to brighten the day of the elderly, serve food to the homeless, clean up a local beach or engage in countless other opportunities, be sure to choose a volunteering activity that is meaningful to both of you.

A MOMENT IN TIME

For the mature couple, seal your time together by constructing and burying a time capsule. Gather memorabilia that symbolizes your love for one another. A wedding invitation, saved wine cork, concert/plane ticket, copy of children’s birth records, meaningful photos, love letters and anything else that is unique to the story of your love. Be sure to include a note to the capsule’s future retrievers. LOVE MARRIAGE & PARTNERSHIP | THE REVIEW

“Everyone knows that Dr. Mae Jemison was the first Black woman to travel into space - but many don’t know that a Black woman from Moss Point, MS, with her own firsts “suited her up”.

MODERN day

SHARON CAPLES MCDOUGLE grew up on the MS Gulf Coast and is a proud native of Moss Point, MS. She attended East Park Elementary, Ed Mayo Jr. High, and graduated from Moss Point High School.

McDougle began her career with the Space Shuttle Program as a Crew Escape Equipment (CEE) Suit Technician, responsible for processing the orange launch and re-entry pressure suit assemblies worn by all NASA space shuttle astronauts. She was assigned to her first mission within a year. McDougle was one of only two women CEE Suit Technicians and the only Black technician when she began her career.

Everyone knows that Dr. Mae Jemison was the first Black woman to travel into space - but many don't know that a Black woman from Moss Point, MS, with her own firsts "suited her up". McDougle was Jemison's "suit tech" for her historic mission aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavor. McDougle worked closely with Jemison during her training leading up to launch, as well as actual launch day and landing of the space shuttle – taking care of all of her assigned crew escape equipment - from her writing utensils to her diaper! McDougle moved up the ranks quickly and was promoted to the position of Crew Chief making her the first female and first Black Crew Chief in CEE. In her new position she was responsible for leading a team to suit up astronaut crews. As Crew Chief she had the honor of leading the first and only all-female suit tech crew supporting space shuttle mission STS-78. Later in her career McDougle became the first, and only female, and Black person, promoted to the position of Manager of the CEE department. In this position, she managed the team of 25+ employees responsible for processing the Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES) and related equipment worn by the astronaut crews aboard the space shuttle. Her team assisted the astronaut crews in donning/doffing the suit, testing the equipment, strapping the astronauts into the space shuttle before launch, and recovering the crew upon landing. During her career, she was recognized with the Astronaut “Silver Snoopy” Award, Space Flight Awareness Honoree Award, Employee of the Month Teamwork Award, Employee of the Month Community Service Award, and the coveted Women of Color in Flight Award from Dr. Mae Jemison recognizing my career as the first and only African American woman suit tech/crew chief in her field. She absolutely loved her job and is proud to have been a part of our nation’s historic Space Shuttle Program. McDougle and her husband Maronald currently reside in La Porte, TX (Houston area) with their children Dominique and Corbin..

McDougle is a United States Air Force (USAF) veteran, which is where she began her aerospace career in after graduating from high school. She served proudly in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) as an Aerospace Physiology Specialist at Beale Air Force Base, CA where she was responsible for training the SR-71 and U-2/TR-1 (“spy planes”) reconnaissance aircraft pilots on high altitude operations. She worked as a chamber operations team member during hypobaric and hyperbaric chamber operations. McDougle has been recognized by her home state as a 2018 Mississippi Trailblazer at the 16th Annual Mississippi Trailblazers Awards Ceremony and Black Tie Gala where she received two awards: the Calvin “Buck” Buchanan “FIRST” Award named for Mississippi’s first United States Attorney for the Northern District – honoring a Mississippian who holds the distinction of being the “first” in their profession and the Dr. Cindy Ayers “Legacy” Award honoring a Trailblazer whose singular work and contributions will leave a legacy long after their life has ended. Mcdougle was also recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Living Legend Award from the Moss Point Visionary Circle for my military service and NASA career McDougle was selected as one of 2018’s Most Influential African Americans in the State of Mississippi. She also received the Lifetime Achievement award from the Moss Point Visionary Circle during their 6th Annual Living Legends Ball for her military service and NASA career. She and her husband and I both have family still living on the coast. I currently reside with my family in La Porte, TX (Houston area). FOLLOW ON FB: SHARON CAPLES MCDOUGLE

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN LOVE &

PURPOSE REUNITE?

THE ESSENCE OF MARRIAGE IS REVEALED L

O

V

E

We present love with a serious approach that challenges society’s modern perception that love is a feeling. Their insightful view of the true meaning and ultimate function of love compels you to reflect on your personal view and understanding of what love is, and how it is to be applied. We are all in need of love, and cannot function without it; however, it is our lack of knowledge, diverse conceptions, and varied levels of maturity that prevent us from giving and receiving love in a way that is both operative and sustaining.

MARRIAGE

We tactically illustrate the parallels of getting married and being married as they explain the image of marriage versus the essence of marriage. Knowing that love alone does not constitute a good marriage, they define the roles of the husband and wife, what needs must be met, and the purpose for the institution of the union. James and Natasha share features that have personally helped them in the growth of their marriage.

We broaden the novel perception of marriage as they build the idea of a marriage being a partnership. In a marriage, you become ONE. With this belief, James and Natasha ask what is the one thing that you represent as a couple? What singular vision do you have as a couple? What purpose are you serving as a couple? What gift are you sharing as a couple? Through personal observation and intentionally studying successful couples in partnership for over a decade, they explain the necessity of a mastermind alliance in your partnership, how to add value to what you do in your marriage, and what the fulfillment of your work in partnership is provision for.

CLEANSE HER. LISTEN TO HER.

Listening to your wife allows you to really understand her, and see her inner-most thoughts. You also see her needs. Being able to listen is one of the greatest gifts that you can give to your wife. When you listen, understand that she is not asking for your advice, she is simply looking for you to be open to her feelings and thoughts. Listening allows you to see what she is saying, how she is saying it, and most importantly, why she is saying it. By listening, you can discern whether your wife is seeking your advice or just in need of you helping her to find her own answer.

PAY ATTENTION TO HER.

The more you listen to your wife, the better you will get at paying attention to her. Paying attention allows you to learn major and minor details about your wife, such as knowing her favorite things, her love language, when to do things for her, and how to read her moods. When you pay attention to your wife, you can tell when she wants to do something or have something, but denies it to accommodate you or a situation. Perhaps the greatest thing is being able to recognize who God is in your wife, the strengths and gifts that He’s placed in her. Paying attention allows you to love her the way she deserves to be loved.

APPRECIATE HER.

As a husband it should be a privilege to appreciate your wife every chance you get. Appreciation shows her that all she does has value. Our wives do so much daily to make sure all our needs are met as well as running a household. Appreciate your wife by saying thank you every chance you get. Learn how to edify her at all times letting the world know that she is your gift from the Lord. Appreciate her time, her loving, her respect, her patients, her thoughts and her value to your life. This is an action that will always keep a smile on her face.

Cleansing your wife takes loving her mind, body and soul to a new level. As a husband we are taught to cleanse our wife by washing her with the word of God. As we listen and pay attention to her, please be aware that from day to day so much negativity, disappointments and past hurts fill her mind. Sometimes it’s visible and sometimes suppressed. To cleanse her we must pray with and for her daily, speak positive things into her life daily, speak the word of God with her daily and patently help her to focus on the positive only each and every day. As you cater to her as the weaker vessel the stronger she will be.

BE A GENTLEMAN (CHIVALRY) WITH HER.

Being a gentleman shows your wife that you’re a chivalrous, courteous and an honorable man. Doing this consistently will give your wife the assurance that you love and honor her worth. Your wife deserves to have her doors opened, her chair pulled out, having her hand held in public and private, foot rubs and fixing her plate, just to name a few. Being a gentleman is one of the greatest ways to honor your wife, not only for what she does but ultimately for who she is to you. As husbands let’s show our wives and the world that chivalry is alive and well.

SET GOALS THAT STRETCH HER.

Being the visionary of the home it is our job to set the bar high with everything that we do, including setting goals. The goals should include you and your wife at all times. Because we as husbands desire to see all God has instore for our wives, it is good to set all goals bigger than life. High goals are put into place so that we have to be stretched and grow to reach them. As husbands stretching our wives shows her that we believe in her. Believing in our wives is one of the highest forms of love and appreciation.

PLACE HER AS YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD.

Yes, place her before parents, children, the household responsibilities, work-related duties, and all the other things that attempt to press their way in front

of your wife. Establishing and maintaining this priority is one way of fostering peace, better communication, and productivity within your home and relationship.

LOVE GOD AND BUILD A RELATIONSHIP WITH HIM. This must be priority over all other things. It is not possible to know God and not love Him, and it is impossible to love someone else and not love God. Establishing a loving relationship with God will properly equip you with the strength and wisdom to truly love your husband with an unconditional lovean Agape love. Furthermore, the love that you have for God allows you to accept His commands, and grow in understanding of His word. As your relationship with God grows, so will it with your husband as God shows you how to submit to your husband as unto Christ. LOVE YOURSELF AND HAVE AN INCREASING DESIRE TO BETTER YOURSELF. The better woman that you become, his inspiration to be better is also increased. He sees you as a suitable helper, a true partner – one who completes him as opposed to competes with him. By focusing on positive change within yourself, your husband will view you as someone to be honored, instead of feeling like you’re trying to change him. Also, it may be necessary to tell him that you are working to make yourself better, so that you can be a better help to him. BELIEVE IN AND BUILD UP THE MAN THAT HE IS TO BE. It is vital that you always keep a positive image of who your husband is to be. This takes work on your part, but it’s worth it in the end. There will be moments where it’s easy to see your husband’s weaknesses or areas you feel he needs to grow in, but trust in God to mold and change him. Continue to build him up, encourage him, speak to and treat him like the man that he is to become. Also, be careful not to compare him to anyone else. Ultimately, you want him to be his best self, who God designed him to be – which is more than what you may desire him to be within a moment.

LET YOUR THOUGHTS, WORDS, AND ACTIONS ALWAYS BE POSITIVE OF HIM. This requires self-discipline on many levels. It has often been said that when we do things, we do them three times: in our mind, in our words, and in our actions. Often, there is much emphasis on guarding what we say or do, because those are external things that others can see. However, our thoughts are internal which only God can see. Don’t allow negative thoughts to build up against what you know is true about your husband – that he is your good and perfect gift from the Lord, and that he is fearfully and wonderfully made. Through prayer, fasting, meditation, and God’s word, tear down the strongholds that have built themselves up in regard to your husband so that your words and actions may always be positive both publicly and privately. HONOR HIM AS THE PRIEST, PROVIDER, AND PROTECTOR OF YOUR HOME. To do so requires trust and faith in God at an optimum level. Perhaps this is the area where submission is exercised the most, because it requires a great deal of sacrifice. As the priest of the home, your husband must be respected as the mediator between God and the family. Respect your husband as the one who provides the vision and goals for your family – not just a provider of resources. Understand that God will provide your husband with the vision. Your work is found in his vision. This is not to disregard your goals and dreams. When you sacrifice your personal ambitions, you’ll understand that God has made provisions for your gifts to be used and desires fulfilled in the work that He has given your husband. As the protector of your home, your husband’s fortification addresses anything that may infringe upon the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being of your family. If you feel or see that these components are not present in your husband, pray that God develops these things in him. PRAY FOR HIM. Be attentive to your husband’s needs, desires, strengths, and weaknesses in a way that you can prayerfully ask God to address. When you do so, you allow God to use all of His resources to touch the areas of your husband that you’re praying for. Have peace in knowing that you have no power to change anything about your husband, but God gives you the power and authority to pray for him and help him through God’s strength. PLACE HIM AS YOUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY IN YOUR HOUSEHOLD. Yes, place him before the children, the household chores, work-related duties, and all the other things that attempt to press their way in front of your husband. Establishing and maintaining this priority is one way of fostering peace, better communication, and productivity within your home and relationship.
