Mass Transit Station Internship New york Ny Transportation Spring 2015

Since the 1990s, SOM has taken a leading role in the advocacy and design of the monumental civic project to convert theBeaux-Arts James A. Farley Post Office into a 21st-century train station. Situated across Eighth Avenue from Pennsylvania Station, the new Daniel Patrick Moynihan Station will create needed capacity in the region’s rail system and catalyze development of Manhattan’s Far West Side, while restoring and preserving an important historical resource. After it was demolished in 1963, New York’s original Pennsylvania Station acquired a mythic status as a symbol of the lost grandeur of rail travel and public space in the United States. SOM’s design for a new Penn Station restores this sense of civic monumentality and represents America’s new era of high-speed rail. The new station transforms the Farley Building into a new train station while preserving the landmark postal hall. The first phase of the project includes five major transportation and infrastructure-related components: doubling the width and length of the West End Concourse, which connects to the A/C/E subway line and is located below the post office; improving platform ventilation and signal work; upgrading the connector between the post office and the existing Penn Station beneath West 33rd Street; and adding two new entry points on both sides of the post office’s grand staircase on Eighth Avenue.

Performing Arts Center Cincinnati OH Existing Garage Superstructure Summer 2014

The main feature of the project is the ride itself, allowing passengers to enter through spaces that further educate them more about space transportation. The existing structure sits on an old parking garage located on Race and Fourth street. The task was to develop a program that must include a pool, theater, and an interstitial space. My concept idea is based on the feature of the circulation and spiral of the garage. By several iterations, I decided to raise the pool to the same level of the theater in order to maximize the transportation between the two spaces, and also keep enough space for parking. The purpose I created a serious overhang on the balcony is for the amazing city views and makes the space more functional.

Building From Within Stairs Winter 2014

Starting with the human scale inside it , a space is created through several transformation actions. After scaling and measuring the human body is several poses, a program is created to fit the body’s proportions. The program is abstracted into five models, using a single operation word and an aggregation word. After iteration, the five form one model using a multiple operation word.

This pages shows the development from five initial sections to the five models

simplify the figure, wrap the other model to create a balcony to make the space more open also contrast the pause space

interlock the model, flip down the original figure, off the edge a little bit, create different level, make the space more interesting

simply the idea to create another entrance

make a pause space

simplify the idea, lift up the stage to stop people a little bit to enjoy the inside space
