WAN CHAI REGENERATION 2005 We were commissioned by Be Light, a charity group to design for an interior project.

INTRODUCTION In an age marked by alienation between people and disintegration of communities, how shall we respond to commercialism’s inevitable intrusion into the traditional way of life? Wanchai is a place with rich and extensive cultural and historical background. Through time, seemingly scattered neighbourhoods grew amidst common collective memories, developing a strong community bond and resulting in a unique sense of place. This is evident to those who visit Wanchai and more importantly, cherished dearly by the local residents. However, the Government’s recent blueprint proposals for redevelopment have been nonchalant to this and instead, yield to Estate Developer’s plans of rapid commercialisation. In what ways would the Government’s plan jeopardise the existence of the traditional Chinese interpersonal values, which are deep-rooted within Wanchai’s community? How is it possible to synthesize the new and old community values through Architecture ? Based on the existing proposals, the livelihood of individual shop owners and hawkers are ruined and they will have to ‘relocate’. Low income residents will no longer be able to afford the new rents resulting in decades of community ties dissipating. Tenement buildings will be replaced and their facades, the streetscape that wraps the public spaces- the vessel for interaction between people and generator of the community life, will be gone and replaced by cold and aloof skyscrapers.

PROPOSITION Our vision for Wanchai’s regeneration is that: Through the preservation and enhancement of a place’s cultural values, it will create a more desirable and sustainable community and this, in the long term, will be beneficial to the society as a whole both socially and economically. The aim for this exhibition is to demonstrate the cultural and commercial value of the conservation of Wanchai. We are working towards a strategy that offers an alternative vision contrary to various proposals of rapid commercialism that has no regard nor respect to local culture and traditional values. OUR APPROACH- THREE DIFFERENT SCALES The proposals have been initiated out of our own sentiments as individuals, but is also combined with research into different aspects of Wanchai at various scales. It is organized into thee parts. The Urban scale that studies and proposes developments for the complex network of transportation and urban fabric; the Block Scale that investigates the urban programme and land use functions; and the Building Scale that investigates the Tenement Building- one of the finest examples of indigenous multi-functional building types in HK.

HONG KONG - ZHUHAI - MACAO BRIDGE HONG KONG BOUNDARY CROSSING FACILITIES INTERNATIONAL 2010 We participated in a competition for designing the bridge as the boundary crossing facilities.

The Hong Kong Gateway represents the ‘Continuous and Ever growing’ prosperities between Hong Kong, Zhuhai and Macao; inspired by the cyclic and unifying nature of the mobius strip, emphasizing the economic and social dynamics within the Delta Region. What serves better as the entrance of HK than an archway which re-animates the spirit and density of the metropolis? The scheme is a symbolic gesture that gives commuters a frozen moment in time and space to experience the intense dynamics of the city. One of the key features of the HK gateway is that it challenges traditional format of traffic circulation, by morphing a horizontal layout into a vertical arrangement of highways to minimize spatial consumption, strengthening the directionality of the gateway complex. Creating an intrigue network of intertwining highway landscape that is functional yet elegantly displaced. SICHUAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF “COMMHEALITY CENTRE” 2007 The project sets out a hypothesis for post industrial urbanism based on analogies, where context is not focused on the geographical orientation of a particular site (here Brickbottom, Boston)

Our aim for the Sichuan Earthquake Relief project is simple and it is perhaps best described with an analogy: to create “a bandage that heals the wound and will slowly integrate itself into the body.” To realise our aspiration, we propose a Commheality (community + heal) centre. On a functional level, the Commheality Centre will be the temporary medical and ration centre for a community. On a symbolic level, the Commheality Centre emphasis on unity; it is a piece of architecture that provides comfort and condolences for the victims under the extreme circumstances. The Commheality Centre has two components: the spine and the outdoor space. The spine, which is a collapsible lightweight structure, provides the backdrop for the Commheality Centre. The spin’s flexible form may appropriate itself on Sichuan’s rough terrains. Pockets of outdoor spaces engulfed by the spine are not only essential for the victim’s livelihoods, but they gradually becomes a critical piece in the puzzle for local reconstruction and revitalise a broken community. Its role changes as the community recuperates after the tragedy. The Commheality Centre is a symbol of unity during the

Together with the existing open area along the water body, the spa itself would be a catalyst to transform the whole district into a public space. With the masterplan responding to the old landing / taking-off trajectories in Kai Tak airport, the whole river surface – spa or sea water, becomes a perfect mirror to reflect the new trajectories now. Tourists and visitors not only could enjoy the Hong Kong skyline, but also the habit of “watching airplanes” nostalgia while they are bathing in part of the Victoria Harbour. The spa facilities would provide great opportunities for mainland workers who have great experiences in spa and message industries to come to Hong Kong for work. It would also be the first public spa run by the Hong Kong government which encourages the development of the industry. Other than the four biggest industries, we would have a great chance to explore a new industry which further develops Hong Kong’s economy.

PAVILION OF REFLECTION 2010 The project is a design for the Hong Kong Pavilion Design for 2010 Shanghai Expo and it was done with conceptual design phase.

The HK pavilion is a formless piece of architecture, its transparent facade allows exposure of internal structure; its reflective facing reflects external environment and activities, thus animates and harmonise its surroundings. Once enters into the pavilion, its internal structure creates tapered vistas for views and circulation, one end in particular directs spectators to the China pavilion in a restrained frame.
