THE ARCHIVE Venice / 2018 Spring

Louis Kahn's bridge

In 1972, Venice government and Carlo Scarpa invited Louis Kahn to design a new congress building - Palazzo dei Congressi in Venice. The new Congress is going to be a big landmark and architectural symbol for both the locals and the visitors. After Khan designed the concept of the Congress, the client told him the location of the project is going to change. Instead of a plain, simple square-like site in a park, the new site locates at the arsenale region, where used to be the military region. The whole situation changed. However, Kahn sticked to his initial idea that he is going to put a bridge in Venice no matter which site it is going to be as he considered bridge is the essential tool where 'conversation' take place in Venice. Our building, the Arsenale Archive locates besides the Congress. By imagining how the Congress is going to work in reality and asking what kind of dialogue is going to happen between these two buildings we can put forward a beginning to this project.

gap for reading

Apart from the first floor where is the main book storage area, the second and third floors are mainly working as a reading area. The roof design introduces light into the wall gap on the third floor to the second floor so that all reading area can enjoy natural light within control.

an addition to Louis Kahn's Palazzo dei Congressi

The connection built between the Archive and the Palazzo dei Congressi resresenting Venice is subtle and fractional. In other words, when the leading actor is settled on the stage, all we audience asking for is a spatial carrier to get closer and closer to appreciate the show. The Archive in this project is working for this purpose. 'Let people do their observation.'

BRIDGE

Architecture at the riverfront

Chesterfield riverfront near the Missouri River, here, the topic of permanent architecture is activated by the running water, which will wash over the site in an unpredictable frequency and scale. And the trees, the trees, there is nothing but the trees and water above the ground, making this place just like a humid version of desert. A site formed by an unshakable urban scale and pure natural factors just like here is a blank paper for architect to write anything on."What will be here? What should be here? How will it be? What does it mean? Why is it here?" Torturing the fisherman-like architect who hesitates to throw out the fishing net. Eventually we came up with only 5 spatial forms that are 'allowed' to be here, piercing and being immersed by the trees, like giant, fragile anchors that exist amidst the trees.

5 prototypes They are the bridge, the island, the tower, the boat, and the submarine. Based on their location, different programs are being activated. The very first prototype is the bridge, which is also the one that is most possible to be built in reality as it is the first step to introduce people to the riverfront site when there is a flood situation. After that, a spatial sequence is being depicted based on the view and the environment condition. We still do not know the program yet until we draw the plans. This is urban planning project that can be understood as a process of questioning the meaning of architecture by designing only the space when there is a riverfront situation. (and we drop the submarine at the next step)

We undoubtedly need the bridge in the riverfront as the existing height difference caused by the levee. The top of the bridge is a path that people step on when they enter the site. Combined with the structure, a liner transparent gallery space appears under that path.

The idea of inserting an atrium into a house turned solid after having researched into the standard Levitt house plan in local area. Normally the central space is difficult to use as it connects all the corner and edge spaces in a plan and it does not always get the direct sun light and approach to the outside environment. The existence of the central void space makes the cross ventilation possible and it also works as a light well to introduce light and shadow from the top roof to the bottom spaces.

The private staircase is working as an entrance space where people put their umbrella or coats at the handrail casually while walking; the enlarged restroom is getting light from the top light well which will glaze your face when you appreciate yourself in the mirror; the corridors, the new architectural space that was not an essential element in the previous plan, are becoming popular and essential ...

overlap the space

Development of the facades is related to the local climate in a large extent. Puerto Rico, as a tropical rainforest city, has an average annual temperature of 31 Celsius. Providing passive sustainable design in this housing project is much more essential than providing active sustainable design. In this context, we designed carefully with the windows and the roof strategy. According to the quantity of solar radiation, two strategies are adopted in the project. Only crucial functional openings are being placed at the east and west facade. At the north and south, terraced balconies at each floor provide sun shading to the inner space. The plants are carefully selected in the landscape aspect.

FLYOVER 31 Buenos Aires / 2018 Fall

Buenos Aires : harsh grid system, endless crossroads

Villa 31 : irregular urban fabric behaves like organism

and

Buenos

Aires

Due to the urban planning strategy, most part of Buenos Aires looks like a game of go. But there are exceptions. Villa 31 is one of them. As the refuge for immigrants in Buenos Aires, Villa 31 has a muscular urban fabric. This so-called slum looks like several pieces of meat, sticking to the north side of Buenos Aires, being cut by the railways. People who live there, just like disembodied organizations, are isolated far away from the city. Their community is formed by cruel decisions made by the social rule. To watch Villa 31, all we have to do is to get on the viaduct in between it and the city. Sceneries of people's life in the Villa will flash by your car window in a dizzy speed. But the viaduct doesn’t belong to them neither. " From their house roofs they look out to the city. Near the concrete pillars of the viaduct they play. " How to link Villa 31 and the Buenos Aires city area is the beginning for this gymnasium design project.

10

Âą7.200 m flyover floor : connections and the plaza Under the viaduct above the railways, the thing connecting the city edge to Villa 31 is a plaza in the air. This irregular structure at the end of the flyover is a result after studying the crossroad effect caused by the grid system widely used in Buenos Aires. It is the entrance inviting people to go beyond the unshakable distance formed by the railway aggregation and the tool for people to get approach to the bus terminus in the middle.

Âą0.000 m ground floor : gym space Close to Villa 31 under the flyover is the gymnasium. To achieve the budget of the whole flyover program, the gym needs to be comparably low-cost, efficient and recyclable. Besides, the gym is opened as there is a big possibility that it will help form a public circulation at the Villa skirt: the abandoned round railway plate, temporary school, the gym and the water tower at the east.

OTHER STORIES 2017 - 2019

a three-legged table

A place to rest the body: Compared to architecture design, furniture design is a way to build up direct interaction between human body and the techniques. The sensational system of a person is underrated when we only think about the space, as it is physically placed above any living things. By practicing with different traditional techniques and emergent technologies, a handmade piece was born. It is a three-legged table decided in the case-study phase when Lina Bo Bardi's Tripe de Ferro chair was analyzed. The motif of three-legged furniture is a challenge based on the impulse to create something more than stable. Geometry prototypes are introduced according to their positions. The top is a concave lotus-like dish adopting the ceramic technique. The bottom is a wooden structure emphasizing 3 types of joint. They are the one with the wood, the one with the wire and the one with the string.
