Every Pittsburgher knows our “Steel City” nickname stems from the oncedominant steel industry, when men in hard hats went to work. But when it comes to modern-day businesswomen in the city, the “Steel” nickname still applies, as in “Nerves of.”

I

n this Women of Power issue, Maniac is featuring some of the most influential women in Pittsburgh, all of whom have stories to tell about their relationship to the city and how they’ve learned to thrive in their careers.

“No one’s ever going to give you power,” said Cauthen. “If you want power or if you want to advance, you have to go out and get it. If you really want to make your mark, you really have to be willing to earn it.”

Kate Schuster, president of V.O. George Group, Inc., represents various manufacturers in the construction industry. But nearly 10 years ago, she found herself at a crossroads when she was just out of college and her father, founder of V.O. George Group, had suddenly passed away, leaving ownership of the business in jeopardy.

This women-helping-women mentality surpasses workplace encouragement and is even demonstrated in the businesses themselves.

“I wanted to run the business, and I was only 23,” said Schuster. “The guys at our factory were scared that the business was going to fail, with good reason. I can understand.” A decade later, the business is still flourishing, with Schuster citing inner confidence and the desire to learn as keys to success. “[In the beginning] I pretended that I knew what I was talking about when I didn’t and followed up on everything, striving to be customer-service oriented, going above and beyond.” Schuster’s story mirrors similar advice from Dragonfly Pilates Owner and Master Trainer Misty Lynne Cauthen, for women looking to gain more influence in their careers. 18

Jennifer Blair, founder of Dekalash, took her eyelash-extension business and reached out to fellow female entrepreneurs in the area, empowering them with new opportunities. “Dekalash makes people feel beautiful and happy,” said Blair. “Plus, I’m employing women, which is something I’ve enjoyed, helping them find jobs and have a flexible schedule without compromising their pay.” In addition to Pittsburgh, Dekalash stores have opened in Salt Lake City and Southern California, with Blair’s entire family committed to the company’s success. “My mom’s involved. My husband’s involved. DeKa is actually named after my two daughters.”

Being a family business is something Jennifer Danilchick-Pelusi knows all too well, as she and her husband, Philip Pelusi, work together every day. “He’s my favorite person in the whole world and I know he feels the same way about me, so I think it’s an exceptional situation,” said Danilchick-Pelusi, Vice President of Tela Beauty Organics, hair and bodycare company that combines science and unmatched organic performance to health and beauty. “The balance [in our relationship] doesn’t come into play because the force is so positive. I don’t think about it in terms of prioritizing. It’s a force of nature.” As a native New Yorker, Danilchick-Pelusi finds Pittsburgh a refreshing change for entrepreneurs. “It’s very hard to dream big in New York City,” said Danilchick-Pelusi. “New York is unlimited, but Pittsburgh, if you have a strong idea, you can get it done with more stability and a quicker turnaround to your goal. People are more embracing of ideas here.”

“The influx of corporations moving into our region continues to bring new and diverse opportunities for women in the marketplace. I believe all of the regional and national media attention our city has garnered in recent years has a tremendous impact on our career growth potential.” With so many Pittsburgh women offering so many different talents, there is one thing they all seem to have in common. “We all believe that the only limitation is the one we put on ourselves,” said Bear Brandegee, image consultant and executive style strategist who works with businesswomen to enhance their style. When it comes to Brandegee’s career, there has been no limit to her success. At 30, she held the position of vice president at one of the largest PR firms in the world; by 37, she had launched a $40 million Internet company.

And this sky’s-the-limit attitude is one that women of all situations and careers can adopt. “If you’re loving what you do and loving life,” said Brandegee, “you’re going to attract more of that.”

Kim Marie Angiuilli, top Pittsburgh realtor in the Northern suburban region, cites the city’s recent revolution as a reason for women to flock to the region. “Pittsburgh is a fabulous city for women in business and here’s why: Pittsburgh, over the past few decades, has transformed from being primarily a manufacturing city to more of a city focused on business and technology.” Tiffany Fluhme, beauty expert and founder of Fluhme Beauty cosmetic company, agrees: “I think Pittsburgh is wonderful for businesswomen. There are a ton of opportunities for success here.” Fluhme believes in beauty, inside and out, and in 2009, started the Fluhme Foundation, with the goal to enrich the lives of children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. “I believe it takes a visionary and a leader to be a woman of power. Someone who thinks outside of the box and is motivated to help lead our city and community to stand out among other major cities in the country. Whether it be an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, or an industry leader, such as in the medical field, there are so many opportunities for women to use their passion and their talents to make a difference in our flourishing city.” Christina Dickerson, president of Dickerson Creative Communications, has received numerous awards and accolades for her extensive knowledge and work in media and public relations. As someone with experience obtaining local and national media attention for highprofile clients, Dickerson recognizes good press in the city and believes the opportunities for Pittsburgh women will only grow.

Choosing a Venue

We chose Masseria Don Luigi in Fasano, Italy. When planning a wedding abroad, look for areas that are hidden treasures, not your obvious tourist destinations, to get the most bang for your buck.

Wedding Planner

This is key to planning your perfect wedding abroad. The extra cost will make up for itself with less headaches when finding vendors and being stress-free on your special day. Make sure to look for someone who knows the area well, speaks your language, and is interested in your vision.

It's All in the Details!

If you're a DIY bride like myself, you'll want to add some personal touches. Plan on packing one suitcase with your homemade goodies. Bonus: You'll have an empty suitcase for your honeymoon, which I'm sure you'll have no problem filling before you return.

Don't Be a Diva!

With a wedding abroad, you will need to pick and choose your battles. When it comes down to it, something might not translate like you had envisioned. Focus on your top three must-haves and then be ready to roll with it if something doesn't turn out just right. After all, you're in a beautiful place, marrying the man of your dreams—so what if your bouquet isn't exactly like the photo you sent! 36

The Venue There are so many great options for Masserias in Italy—it was hard to choose! Thankfully, our wedding planners, Michela and Michela from Italian Wedding Co., helped us narrow it down and find the perfect one for us! Masseria Don Luigi is a beautiful bed and breakfast set among olive groves in Southern Italy, in a charming region known as Puglia, less than a mile from the beach. We chose this location because all of our guests could stay together in one place, and the venue could accommodate every aspect of our wedding. Besides, the setting was gorgeous, and the food was to die for. Breakfast was served each morning, and appertivo in the evenings by the pool. Another perk to the location was its close proximity to different towns in the Puglia region. With more than four or five towns only 30 minutes away, it gave our guests places to explore throughout the week and helped them see a different side of Italy they might not have discovered had we been in Florence or Rome. I created maps for each guest that they received in their welcome bags, and they all enjoyed venturing out to see each unique town. If you pick a less-known destination, I highly recommend a map of the area to help get your guests acclimated. 37

It's All in the Details! As a designer, I wanted to customize anything I could. Being that the wedding was so far away, I planned to pack a spare suitcase with the extra decor that I wanted and it worked out well. I was able to find better deals in the States than asking my wedding planner to find things I wanted, so I saved money and got the special touches I was looking for. If you're planning a wedding abroad, look at your options on your airline ticket. Most likely using your second bag or paying for one will be cheaper than shipping anything overseas.

Don't be a Diva! Okay, maybe just a little. To me, the MOST important thing was an amazing photographer; I wouldn't budge on this or videography. The day goes by so fast—I wanted beautiful pictures to capture the memories forever. Luckily, my wedding planner sent Francesco's portfolio over as an option, and I knew as soon as I saw his photojournalist style that he was exactly what I wanted. Besides being an amazing artist, he was a ray of light on our beautiful day, making me laugh and feel comfortable; all of the guests fell in love with him and his team. To me, nothing is more important than a great photographer on your wedding day. I got lucky since I had never met the team and solely had to go off of his work, but boy am I glad I took the chance. If you're searching for an international wedding photographer, I'd highly recommend Francesco, but either way, get references, ask your wedding planner, and most of all, decide what style of wedding photography you love and find someone that fits that.

Travel and Adventure! Picking a destination with plenty of sights to see gives your guests one more reason to join you for your destination wedding. Plan a few events that give your guests a taste of the region. Instead of a formal rehearsal dinner, try a wine tasting tour and lunch at a local winery. We were lucky enough to be hosted by a beautiful winery about an hour south of Fasano. Tormaresca, located in Puglia's Salento area, showed our family and friends a wonderful tour of its facility located on 625 acres along the Adriatic coast. It also provided a beautiful lunch of local cuisine paired with exceptional wines.

If you're creating a website, make sure to include travel details and a short bio about the location. Let guests know why you picked this location and what they'll love about it, too. A welcome map is a great idea to help guide your guests and it gives them a bit of a scavenger hunt to do while visiting. In Puglia, there are more than five villages within a 15- to 30-minute drive. On free days, our guests explored each town, looked for landmarks, poems written on staircases, and shared their adventures over dinner in the evenings. After everything was said and done, we wouldn't have done it any other way!

“To be honest, as an artist, it’s not the easiest thing, being related to Andy Warhol. Those are very big shoes to fill,” stated Abby Warhola, the great-niece of one of the most, if not the most, iconic modern artists of our time. Ms. Warhola takes it in stride, though, drawing inspiration from Uncle Andy, as well as other parts of her life and unique upbringing. Abby Warhola was born and raised in Pittsburgh in what she thought was a very average upbringing. Most kids, however, don’t have the great luck to be surrounded by a family chock-full of artists and to be exposed to art and creativity on an almost daily basis— something Abby now pulls inspiration from and recognizes as being part of what shapes her as a successful photographer.

I would attribute my artistic nature to my great grandmother, Julia. She was an incredible artist in her own right and instilled creativity in her children and grandchildren. It was passed on to me.

It was passed on to me.” She also credits her grandfather, a painter, for taking her into his studio as a young girl to paint the backgrounds of his chicken feet paintings. Her mother had a silk-screening business here in Pittsburgh and her father is a woodworker who hand-carves wooden columns.

MANIAC feature After putting her photography on hold for a while last year to work on Uncle Andy (the documentary she and her partner, Jesse Best, were hoping to get funded via a Kickstarter campaign), she is really excited to get back into her craft again. Warhola has photographed a number of glamorous and glitzy events, like New York Fashion Week. She points to the energy, the fashion, and the hustle and bustle of New York as being sources of inspiration for her photographs. She does plan on attending New York Fashion Week again this season, where she takes a different approach to snapping the fashions and runway models. “I love shooting backstage,” said Warhola, “because it presents the opportunity to capture these women with more depth and genuine emotion. I love the candid before the pose. I love to find strength in them, not as an object, but as people.” One look at the archives on her website shows that these aren’t your typical fashion photographs. Instead, they capture the models in a more human light, making them seem even more beautiful than they already are. Do strong women inspire her? “I am forever inspired by women. Always have been. I love their beauty and femininity. They will always be my favorite subject to photograph.” After NYFW, Warhola will come back to Pittsburgh, where she spends most of her time. She will focus on her work here, with new endeavors on the horizon. “I’m actively looking for a studio, so you will be seeing new work from me very soon,” Warhola said. It’s a great thing to anticipate—a talented young artist from a notable Pittsburgh family putting down her roots and sharing her art and photography for all of us to be inspired by.

Abby Warhola spent time as a young girl at Rogers CAPA and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, before moving on to CAPA (the Creative and Performing Arts High School) and turning her eye toward New York City. “I was sure that I was going to be a dancer in New York. I really wanted to be a Rockette.” However, knee injuries sidelined her dancing dreams. When the photography bug bit, Abby enrolled in the Manchester Craftsman’s Guild for Photography. She saved up for her first camera and built a darkroom for film development. But it was after the birth of her daughter, when she got her hands on a digital camera, that she really fell in love with becoming a photographer.

Many celebrities like Ashley Tisdale and Jennifer Aniston have been seen with 36-millimeter Rolex Presidents, so you don’t necessarily have to stay with the smaller, more feminine design.

ATTITUDE.

The size of the watch speaks to the attitude you want to convey, what it says about your personality, with the trend swinging toward women wearing traditional-sized watches and even sportsized watches such as the Rolex Daytona. The ultra high-end manufacturers, such as Patek Philippe and Jaeger LeCoultre, began including women in their design process. These brands, and others in the ultra highend timepiece market, were historically male-dominated. Now Jaeger-LeCoultre is turning to Diane Kruger as the fierce female face of the brand, where she sports various watches from Jaeger-LeCoultre in sizes that range from very traditional feminine to more modern masculine. The general attitude of the watch always needs to be taken into consideration. Do you want a loud statement timepiece, or a refined, classiclooking watch?

WEARABILITY.

Wearability is so fundamentally important, but often the most overlooked when buying a high-end timepiece. You don’t buy gold timepieces with a jet-black face if you never wear

black. Black-face watches are difficult to match and are usually reserved for blacktie events. Manufacturers have released new watches with faces that are metallic and made of mother-of-pearl to pair against a wide variety of colors. For example, a metallic grey or a deep-slate face will reflect well with white, black, blue, and even brighter colors such as pink. The wearability of a watch can only be discerned after taking into account your own personal fashion tastes, what other jewelry you own, and how you have built your wardrobe.

BRAND POWER.

Brand power is an obvious reality of haute horology. Some companies, such as Rolex, are better known than their higher-end competition. Certain brand names carry a statement that, “Yes, I have made it; I am to be respected.” These brands usually have excellent resale value and are investment grade, and include companies like Cartier, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Patek, Piaget, and of course Rolex. Higherend fashion brands such as Christian Dior, Gucci, and TechnoMarine rarely hold their value or stand the test of time.

Sheila C. Weiner is the president and founder of The Event Group, a Pittsburghbased special events company. Adele From Beyoncé’s Lemonade to Adele’s comeback tour in New York City, women have been slaying the world of music in 2016. Here are the ones that sit at the very top of the industry right now.

This artist took the music world by storm when she dropped “Chasing Pavements” in 2008. From then on, she’s only proven herself as the best there is, selling millions of albums over her short career. She has the ability to send chills up the spine with just one verse. In 2011, she hit a little bump in the road, as she went through vocal nodule surgery and spent weeks in recovery. But she came back into the music space and made a statement with vocals that were stronger than ever. In December 2015, Adele said “Hello” again to all of her fans at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, singing ballads, both released and unreleased, from her new make-up record, 25, in her first show since surgery. Adele is truly one of the best that this industry has seen and, with her gorgeous, hearty vocals, will always be a beacon of hope and beauty in what music truly stands for.

Beyoncé Strong vocals and captivating stories make Queen Bey one of the greatest artists to grace the earth. She slays. One of her biggest standout moments was at 2016’s VMA’s, when she performed a few songs from her latest album, Lemonade. In this powerful performance, Beyoncé brought an artistic musing on violence through her gloomy opening, symbolic of Trayvon Martin’s death. She turned up the heat further with songs about her husband’s alleged affair, and ended the performance with dozens of dancers arranged in the “woman” symbol (reminiscent of her 2014 VMA performance, where she sang “***Flawless” in front of a backdrop displaying the word “FEMINIST”). Talk about an effective formation. There’s talent, and then there’s Beyoncé. There’s just no comparison.

Britney Spears Who could ever forget about this pop sensation? Britney has had a rollercoaster of a career, including her instability in 2007 to her comeback at this year’s VMA’s. A lot of time has passed since her first album, and she’s dropped countless hits that make her the original Queen of Pop. On her new album, Glory, she explores a variety of hot pop genres and brings a new voice to her fans. Britney wants to show the world she’s back, better, and will always be on top in the world of pop superstardom.

After seven seasons, Gilmore Girls ended in 2007 on a low, leaving everyone wanting more. But in true girl-power fashion, when Rory’s then-boyfriend Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry) proposed to her in one of the final episodes, Rory turned him down to pursue her own dream of being a journalist. Fans were also left wanting to see what was in store for Lorelai and Luke, who had promising signs of rekindling their relationship in the last episode. For now, Gilmore Girls fans can take a walk down memory lane by watching reruns on Netflix to fill the gap before the series returns November 25 on the streaming network, with four new 90-minute chapters. Fans went fanatic last October when everyone’s favorite dramedy Gilmore Girls announced its comeback on Netflix for fall 2016. In the past 50 years, women have made amazing progress in the workplace, with many becoming CEOs and bosses with a lot of zeros on their paychecks. But some partners may be intimidated to date a woman who makes more money than them. Dating and money should never cause awkwardness. There is more to a relationship than the financial aspect, and honesty about it goes a long way and shows maturity. You need to be honest about insecurities because the only way to work on them, or work with them, is to be honest about them. For example, if your partner wants to go somewhere out of your budget,let her know, and you both can discuss options. At that point, she can either treat you or find a place you both agree on. Communication is essential. I say it all the time, but it truly affects the relationship. When talking with your partner, or a woman you’re interested in, be upfront about your insecurity. Lack of money can make some people feel bad about themselves. It doesn’t take money to make a relationship equal; it takes communication on how the money will be spent. When wanting to impress a woman, you don’t need to spend a ton of money. Making an impression is not about how much money to spend as much as it is the thought that goes into it. You could cook your favorite meal for her, give her a massage (especially a foot rub), or create a romantic date night at home: movie/show, popcorn or sweets, her favorite wine or drink, and maybe candles. If you attempt to live a lifestyle like she does, you’ll end up resentful, which will ultimately affect the relationship. So try to resist purchasing gifts by creating moments that include what you both love to do together.

There are so many ways you can feel equal to your partner without a huge bank account or income. For example, think about how you handle your life. What do you do to take care of your mind and body? How do you spend and save your money? How you function in the world, communicate, and show affection and intimacy are all aspects of your life that contribute to a relationship as much as money does. Attractiveness goes beyond what you can give her with money. When going on dates, don’t assume the role of having to pay for her portion, too. If you planned it that way, and can actually afford it, by all means go ahead. This is the 21st century; therefore, splitting the cost with her should be normal—this goes for women of all incomes. If you are uncomfortable not being able to pay, ask yourself why you feel that way. What keeps you from feeling able to split costs with her? Trying to keep up with her bank account will be stressful; don’t assume you need to spend a lot of money or always pay for things. Through being honest, personalizing moments, resisting expensive gifts, and not trying to keep up with her or feel intimidated, you will have a phenomenal foundation to stand on. Money does make the world go round, but it is not the end-all, be-all of a relationship. Focus on getting to know her for who she is and what common interests/goals you share, instead of getting to know her through her bank account. Port Authority has convenient and frequent service to and from the urban areas of Pittsburgh. East Liberty is the heart of the East End’s transit service. Many Port Authority bus routes use the East Busway to bypass local traffic including the P1 and P3 from East Liberty’s busway station which offer quick rides to Downtown and Oakland. Various other routes have stops on Penn Ave. and serve just about anywhere in the East End of the city. Living Downtown? You CAN get anywhere from here.
