WINDLOW WINS ELECTION Exit poll proves correct; Chamber of Commerce elects Clover Windlow as Chairperson for coming six-month term LIONHEART EMBASSY, LEBEAU – Members of the Lionheart Chamber of Commerce have voted over the past weekend, and today the winner of the election is clear: Clover Windlow received the most votes and will now lead the group of local business owners for a six-month term. When asked at the last CoC meeting what would be her first priority as Chair, Windlow answered, “Like my friend [and opponent] Sookie [Slafford], I too would make meeting and feedback a high priority.... A lot of us don't even know what's available in our own city.”. Windlow held a celebration party last night at the Wee Little Irish Pub in Timon, where she thanked her supporters and spoke about her plans for the future of the Chamber. “As your new Chairperson, I'm making our new mantra REMOVE THE HURDLES. I want to make sure that new businesses here in town are empowered right away with the fundamental tools to help their businesses succeed: from naming their parcel and listing it in Search, to listing goods on XStreet, to making and maintaining a shop group, to budgeting their money. I'm not here to hold anyone's hand; I am, however, here to answer questions at any time.” Stay with the Lionheart Times for up-to-date news from the Chamber of Commerce, throughout the new Chairperson's term.
A Secured Election

Could Security Play a Role in How Many Ballots Were Cast? by Thaddeus Nadeau Elections are a vital component to any democratic institution. Lionheart Estate, a community of residents who work, play, and live together on the continent named Lionheart, hold an electoral process every six months in order to appoint a new chairperson for the merchant’s guild, Chamber of Commerce. This commerce group is run by the merchants for the merchants. During this current electoral process, there were two candidates; Clover Windlow and Sookie Slafford. The two candidates shared similar platforms, which made the election that much more difficult for the merchants to choose as their candidate. However, there were a few other hurdles that needed to be overcome; which ultimately served as lessons learned for all. Following the one-hour discussion to meet both candidates, the election process began on Friday, August 27 at 2PM SLT. The meeting took place in the Lebeau region on mainland; beside the soon-to-be opened Lionheart Mainland Embassy. Therefore, it was essential that security measures be taken to safeguard the election process and ballot box. At this time, the only individuals allowed to vote in the elections were those who owned commercial land and engaged in some form of business; profit or nonprofit. Those who qualify are also required to join the Lionheart Chamber of Commerce group, which provides them with a group tag. This group tag is of the utmost importance because when visiting the new CoC Headquarters, a merchant must be wearing the tag or risk being booted from the vicinity.
This is essential information that not all merchants knew. At least one known merchant was banned and another booted. During the evening of August 27, one Ms. Shua Arcana of the Timon sim eagerly went to the Headquarters building to cast her vote for the candidate she supported. She teleported in, on the bottom floor, but before she knew what hit her, she was knocked out and “banned indefinitely.” Ms. Arcana was upset and perturbed, but she showed resilience and contacted estate owner, Dirk Klees to notify him about her seemingly indefinite punishment. See, Ms. Arcana was unable to attend the earlier meeting and missed the information that she must wear the Chamber group tag. Thankfully, Mr. Klees was able to undo the innocent slight placed upon Ms. Arcana and reinstate her ability to access the land where the ballot box sat awaiting her eager vote!
YOU TALKIN' TO ME? - A griefer-driven taxicab strikes bystanders last week in the streets of Timon, as part of estatebanned griefer lawofficer Peapod's cunning plan to create a problem for his "police force" to solve. Peapod was banned from the estate, with parcels revoked, about half an hour following the assault. (Photo – T. Nadeau)
This, while unfortunate, served a greater good for the community at large. Mr Klees said, at the following days Town Hall meeting when questioned about members being banned, “Shua...yes..that was before i reconfigured the orb yesterday ㋡…i'm glad she told me, so i could fix that :D.” Now, a merchant who is not wearing their tag will be booted, but just needs to wear their group tag and they can gain entrance to the headquarters building. There is also, now, a sign that reminds merchants to wear their tag to gain admittance. The security measures have been questioned by some, but they do safeguard the election from nonmerchants and random mainland passersby. However, this does leave one wondering if any ballots were not cast for the sake of security.

Travel The Casual Traveler
The Casual Traveler Visits Chamonix City It's that time again: time for The Casual Traveller to visit a new location in SL grid. This time he decides to take a closer look at Chamonix City, which is dubbed the best winter sports location in the Grid. First impressions are good, after teleporting to the location. However this deteriorates a lot after getting into the city itself. The scenery is excellent, but the audio world... oh my. At least with Viewer 2.1, there is too much audio pollution, and sounds are not staying in their parcels properly. With other Viewers, audio is much more pleasant. The Casual Traveler is really impressed with the GOHA community center especially with the fact that it was established all the way back in 2006, and featured even on CNN. This place has very nice feeling in it, especially if you are a winter person. However, now it's the time to see the main attraction: the hockey ring! The Casual Traveler doesn't often use supelatives, but in this case they are all worth it; the place is simply IMPRESSIVE. Well thought of, and for the sports fan very much a place to visit. For those who want to participate, there are also very well-designed training areas, and training sessions are frequent. Hockey is not the only winter activity Chamonix offers. Another very interesting thing is free snow boarding, so if that's your thing, it's very much worth checking out. What really catches The Casual Traveler's eye when walking around Chamonix City: the advertising, and more importantly, lack of it! Usually locations are cluttered with ads of all kinds and sizes, but Chamonix is clearly different in this way. All in all, it's time for The Casual Traveler to take up the Destination Guide and head into new adventure, but Chamonix City and all its various facilities left good feeling into the memory of The Casual Traveler. Last Night's Victory Speech This is the speech I gave last night at my victory party at the pub. Congratulations, neighbors; we did it! I say "we" because it couldn't have happened without your support. I know that voting was a real challenge, but you all rose to that challenge beautifully and I sincerely thank you. As your new Chairperson, I'm making our new mantra REMOVE THE HURDLES. I want to make sure that new businesses here in town are empowered right away with the fundamental tools to help their businesses succeed: from naming their parcel and listing it in Search, to listing goods on XStreet, to making and maintaining a shop group, to budgeting their money. I'm not here to hold anyone's hand; I am, however, here to answer questions at any time. I want to encourage the use of group chat for such questions, be it "Why aren't people coming in anymore?" or "How do I get people to see this great product I made?" There are resources available here that many of us aren't even aware of. I want us to all be made aware, simply and clearly. What I want is for each one of us to be able to say to a newcomer, "If you have any questions, just ask me; I'm on the Chamber of Commerce." And so, we will have monthly meetings, with substance. We will also have monthly workshops, open to any and all businesspeople here in Lionheart, taught by Chamber members. We will have information easily at the ready for anyone to find, where "FAQ" stands for "Fully Answered Questions". I do believe in the importance of drawing in outside-of-SL people, in time. But as a cook, I'm of the belief that you must first learn to bake a cake, before you learn to do the fancy frosting. So let us be asking ourselves, "How can we make life easier on business owners, so they can make life easier on their customers?" In other words, let us work together, and remove the hurdles. --Clo

Tips From a Techie Since this is my first column, and I hope to be a regular contributor, I will start out with a brief introduction (so you might stop wondering why you would want to read tips from me). In RL, I am a college grad with a bachelor's in Computer Science. In SL, I have been scripting and building pretty much since I started. The idea of a user-created world appealed to me, so I jumped right in after signing up. I have learned a lot since, and I hope to pass on some of the more useful tips to you.

Resource use is a big issue in SL right now. Some say there are too many scripts, others will tell you that the Lindens are being too cheap on the hardware. There is merit in both sides of that argument, but the important point is that they are limited. Because of this, it is very important to choose your gadgets and scripted objects wisely. When shopping for any SL scripted product, many look for features. Many, however, do not consider what features they will actually use. Many commercial products of any kind, and especially ones facing competition, come with so many features it can be overwhelming. That is the point, to impress with features, and brag that the competition does not have said features. Soon, the competition adds more features, and brags that they now have more features. Soon, your teleporter has 100 ways to send you from point A to point B, with pictures of the destinations, IMs telling you to have a nice trip, and a cup of coffee for the ride. Oh, and it mows the linden grass, and washes the prim dishes too. Considering you just want to get from A to B, who needs all the extras. Many will just rez it and use the defaults, while 9 of the 10 scripts inside sit unused. This is why you need to watch out for the features. Those extra scripts for the features you don't use are still taking up sim resources. A perfect example of bad resource use is no-modify prim hair with a resize script in each of 100 or so prims. Wonder why a sim lags for 15 seconds when someone teleports in? That's probably why. When looking for prim hair, make sure they are mod and without all the resize scripts, or they at least have a way (usually by click menu) to remove them when you have it sized the way you want. There are new script functions that now remove the need for all those scripts, but there are still plenty of old items out there. Being careful with resources does not take much effort. Decide what you need first, and don't get too excited about extra features you may never actually use. You will spend less time trying to figure out how something works, and it will probably save you some lindens.
