PROJECT WHITE T-SHIRT by manifesteTM Fashion is an evolution: from animal skin, artificial cotton to synthetic fiber, from a necessity to anelitist symbol, to a way of self-expression. For decades, a t-shirt has been a functional article that covers the torso. But how will it evolve? What will the evolution process create? Project White T-Shirt challenges the dominant notion of fashion and draws the connection between different forms of art. Its goal is to expand possibilities and creativity through the most basic article of clothing: the white t-shirt (Ritchie Chan, initiator of project white t-shirt). manifeste, avant-garde luxury brand, revisits our everyday lives, creating iconic timeless essentials. Focusing on a close relationship with artists & designers, Alexandre Daval, founder of manifesteTM, develops this project with Cyril Talon for his multi-disciplinary approach. For us, white tee-shirt is the most commonly available, affordable, universal piece of garment, a simple but accomplished shape with no specific designer behind it. Besides, white tee-shirt is a fully customizable item, as a blank page is. Furthermore, white tee-shirt is a standard form, a paradigm by itself. This art piece is our most radical proposal, that proposes a new format of canvas, following the path initiated by great artists such as Malevitch with "White on White", Duchamp with his "readymade" series and Le Corbusier’s works on the notion of standards.

Project White T-Shirt has worked with 31 designers from 13 countries to transform the classic white t-shirt into something new. The designer can turn the shirt into furniture, equipment, electronics, a bicycle : anything they want, however they want. They will transform and redefine the definition of the T-shirt as we’ve understood it for so many decades. Participants include Andrea Crews, c.neeon, Complex Geometrics, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, Siv Stoldal, Kling by Kling and many more. The t-shirts will be exhibited and then auctioned off with the proceeds going to the Designers Against Aids foundation.

Over 30 designers have re-interpreted the humble white t-shirt, curated into an online exhibition Charity and t-shirts have gone hand in hand so many times that we wonder whether 'yet another designer t-shirt collaboration all in the name of charity' will grab out attention. Certainly the name Project White T-shirt brings to mind other similarly spirited collaborations, what with humble white t-shirt being the perfect canvas for any designer to apply their signature. What marks Project White T-Shirt out though is the type of designers that have been chosen to partake in this project. Ritchie Chan of creative studio/agency Triple Major scoured the world looking for designers that could potentially do something genuinely interesting with a tshirt. The 31 names involved, include Andrea Crews, Bruno Pieters, Pelican Avenue, Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Daniel Palillo and other contemporary avant-gardists that are mainly still carving out a signature for themselves and so we look to their t-shirts with curiosity. Looking at the designs that are all exhibited online, these aren't lazy efforts on the part of the designers. Chan personally ensured this was the case by visiting almost every designer to make a video of the process of each white t-shirt interpretation. Some designers have made simple shape adjustments and some have taken their tees out of a wearable context altogether. Just to cite a few of the creative endeavourts the designers have taken their tees, we have a marshamallow covered shirt from Swedish collective Doktor Doktor, a spider web cut-out tee from Kling by Kling and a Mundi t-shirt that went travelling around Iceland for six days and thus accumulating that expedition's imprints. The rest of the Project White T-shirt story is a simple one; the t-shirts will be going on exhibition around the world and then they're up for auction and all proceeds go to Designers Against Aids. They're currently swishing around in a giant laundromat at L.A. Boutique Welcome Hunters and then they go to Space 15 Twenty Gallery. Š manifeste 2013

Dazed Digital: How did you come up with the idea for Project White T-shirt? Ritchie Chan: The idea of the project began with simple curiosity. I've always felt that the fashion industry is dominated by consumerism and monotonous designs, so I am interested in how we can revolutionize the industry or at least add something new to it. The white t-shirt is a natural icon to recreate because of its status as the most classic and basic article of clothing. We also thought that this project would be a great opportunity to contribute to charity, so we're auctioning all the pieces and donating the proceeds to Designers Against AIDS. DD: How did you go about selecting the designers to work with as it's quite an eclectic and international list? RC: Some of the designers we invited to participate often work with transformations of clothing as part of their signature style, or have a more progressive take on fashion. For example, A'N'D and Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair have always been known for their ability to bring new ideas and expand possibilities in fashion. Others have very unique takes or strong statements about fashion in their designs. For example Aftur believes in environmental clothing, Jean//Phillip cultivates a progressive approach to gender and sexuality and Daniel Palillo plays on dark humor. We were confident that all 31 designers could contribute something interesting to the project and to fashion in general. DD: Why begin with an 'internet exhibition' as opposed to a more traditional gallery setting? RC: The intention is that our website functions as a virtual gallery, complementing the traditional gallery exhibition which opens on Saturday, December 19th. As every design is so unique, we wanted to show audiences not only the creation itself, but the creative process behind each piece through video interviews with the designers. That way people can really understand the designers' inspirations as well as the influence of their surroundings on their designs, as if the designers are really talking to you through the videos. At the same time a traditional exhibition tour will take place in galleries and stores around the world so that people have the chance to see the designs in person. DD: How will this project develop over the next few months? RC: Project White T-Shirt will begin a global exhibition tour on December 19th at Welcome Hunters in Los Angeles, then in different galleries and stores around the world including Space 15 Twenty in Hollywood and Gallery de Vie in Hong Kong. In keeping with the innovative spirit of Project White T-Shirt, each exhibition involves a creative installation as well. Š manifeste 2013

It's rare to gather such innovative talent in a single room. Thirty-one designers from thirteen countries collaborated with Project White T-shirt to benefit the Designers Against AIDS foundation. The task was simple: rethink, rearrange, and reinterpret the concept of the beloved white t-shirt of its simple shape into something more profound. The anticipation for the release of this project hit the blogosphere by storm. Not only did it incorporate the reinvention of a classic garment, but it was more importantly done by many underground designers. Personal favorites Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair and Complex Geometries are known for their unsurpassed creativity of their average garments, and that is why it was inevitable for me to venture into the depths of Chinatown in Los Angeles to see the pieces up-close.
Exhibited in Welcome Hunters LA until January 27 and Space 15 Twenty Gallery throughout the month of February, these creations are well-worth the adventure. The venue is set up like a laundromat, which makes the space more interesting. The program is designed like an instruction manual for a washing machine and details the inspiration behind each designer.

It’s true what Dazed Digital’s Susie Bubble (a.k.a. Style Bubble) says, there are many designer t-shirt collabs, especially for charity but I also agree that Project White T-Shirt is different from those prior. First of all, the creative caliber of designers accumulated is simply impressive. Put together by creative studio Triple Major’s Ritchie Chan, Project White T-Shirt involves 31 designers. From simple adjustments to outrageous designs, check out the outcomes in the gallery above. With all proceeds going to Designers Against Aids, they are currently being showcased in L.A.

Some of the interview videos are amazing, others are funny, i havent seen them all because they’re releasing a few every week. Best part? All the tshirts are up for auction, bid on them to support Designers Against Aids. When Ritchie told me about the project a while ago I didn’t know it was gonna turn out so well. The site looks beautiful. Questions i asked Ritchie… Why a white t-shirt? most basic & ubiquitous. Why not white underwear? not ubiquitous, smells. Which is your favorite of all the interview videos? Mundi Which is the funniest to watch? Doktor Doktor Which one was the most unexpected? Daniel Palillo Questions i actually wanted to ask… Which of the designers do you have a crush on? Kling, nicest person ever. Which tshirt would you wear on first date? Doktor Doktor, can’t go wrong with marshmallows Which one would you wear to conquer the world?
