2016 Manila Wear is a branding initiative under Fashion Philippines that aims to develop the Philippine fashion industry into a globally competitive industry. With international fashion icon Josie Natori as curator, Manila Wear continues to position the Philippines as an advocate of unique fashion pieces that combine artisanal crafts with contemporary sensibilities – a fresh take on a more individualized and personal style of fashion.

ADANTE LEYESA Adante Leyesa is a forerunner for sustainable and socially conscious modern fashion with his hand crafted, bejeweled bags and accessories made from home grown, natural materials such as bamboo, semi-precious stones, wood beads and shells. His recent collections also involve the use of upcycled materials such as old charms, trinkets, safety pins, repurposed glass and assorted fabrics, that is intricately beaded or hand sewn to create customdesigned, bespoke pieces with a couture and luxury feel. He is notable for his love of local communities, marginalized groups persons with disability (PWD), out-of-school youth and young mothers making them the creative workforce behind his designs.

Leyesa was one among the six representatives of the country at the 2014 International Fashion Showcase (IFS) in London. He was awarded the 2013 Preview Emerging Fashion Talent Award (PEFTA) by the Philippines’ Preview Magazine, and recipient of a Scholarship grant courtesy of Sheffield Hallam University in UK for the 2013 Look of Style Awards by the British Council – Manila and Look Magazine. His works have been featured in various exhibits, among others: The Art of Movement by Preview Magazine, Spotlight on Green by the Ayala Land Premier, Style Manila by The Podium, Style Origins (Art as Design, Design as Art) by Yuchengco Museum and multiple fashion shows.

ARNEL PAPA Arnel Papa has been lauded for the ingenious ways he incorporates indigenous materials like carabao horns and nails, coco beads, and capiz shells, among other things, into his bespoke hand crafted jewelries. His exquisite and eyecatching masterpieces are internationally recognized and in-demand, especially in the United States and in Europe.

Inside his highly-regarded factory, together with more than a hundred artisans, the international jewelry designer combines home grown indigenous materials with brass and copper that are sourced throughout the archipelago. There is this earthly rawness to his range of fashion items - a trademark that is, in fact, a direct effect of his personality.

ARANAZ

Amina Aranáz is one of the Philippines’ most recognized handbag designers, known for her signature blend of polished and artisanal designs, she takes pride in her Filipino roots by crafting indigenous materials into works of art. Using traditional and understated home grown materials of straw, abaca, raffia, beads, wood and leather, each Aranáz piece is meticulously woven or carved by hand, finely detailed and textured with colorful embroidery, beaded appliqués, hand paintings and enameled finishing, to create bold fashion statements with a local flavor. Aside from having won several local and international awards, Aranáz is also the co-founder of the School of Fashion and the Arts (SoFA), the country’s first specialized design college, and has been proclaimed as one of Manila’s style icons and influencer-makers by various publications, newspapers, television shows.

BEATRIZ

The Beatriz brand, first known for its hammered brass dipped in gold minaudieres and cuffs with semi-precious stones, evolved to using other materials such as resin, carabao horn and bone, Philippine jade and silver. Carissa Cruz Evangelista, the lady behind the Beatriz brand now also finds creative expression in making her signature multicolored clutches, cuffs and pendants. Each piece features a spectrum of bold, vibrant colors that involves a painstaking process where individual cotton yarns are hand-glued row by row to form simple yet strong geometric patterns. Carissa takes pride in working with Filipino artisans and integrating indigenous materials in the Beatriz accessories, having worked with community-based enterprises and livelihood communities in the Philippines.

EARL GARIANDO An interior designer by profession, Earl Gariando decided to pursue a career in fashion, launching his signature Repousse Series – a collection of meticulously hammered and tooled brass or copper sheets, forming uniquely embossed patterns also known as “repousse”. Gariando finds inspiration from classical styles such as baroque and rococo, vintage interiors, retablos or catholic art, and kalesas or traditional horse-drawn carriages; and translates these inspirations into wearable art from minaudieres, hand bags and neckpieces, embellished in fresh water pearls, and semi-precious stones, encased in local weaves of piña (pineapple) silk, and abel iloco textiles.

Gariando is also active in prestigious local and international fashion competitions and events, being selected as a finalist for the Japan International Fashion Design Contest in 2013, Look of Style Awards Accessory Design in 2013, Mega Magazine Young Designer’s Competition in 2009, and Philippine Fashion Designers Competition in 2007, among others.

HARVIC DOMINGUEZ Harvic Dominguez is an advocate for ethical fashion, known for his innovation in combining Inabe, a hand woven textile made by the indigenous communities of the Cordillera Region, Philippines, with other locally sourced materials such as cowhide leather, lace, satin, cotton, sheer and knit fabrics to create modern, high street ready-to-wear ensembles. Although he uses simple cuts, his pieces are anything but ordinary – vibrant-colored, linear prints are hand woven or sewn, pleated and layered to create contemporary and unstructured silhouettes, that defines his unique aesthetics and craftsmanship.

As a featured designer in the recently concluded NCCA Ready to Wear Design Competition, and a Finalist of the Fashion Design Council of the Philippines’ Social Design Competition, Dominguez continues his support for the Philippines’ indigenous communities, by patronizing the traditional hand woven textiles by independent weavers in his hometown, and constantly developing innovative fashion lines to boost the local weaving industries.

Malou Romero is the creative driver behind the accessory brand Joanique. From interest to love, fascinations to untamed passion, is the fire fueling the artistry behind every piece in the collection. Crafted, refined, and polished with the classic beauty of gold and silver vermeil, carabao horns, wood and precious stones, each piece is a testament to the spirit of timeless art. Malou’s designs seamlessly incorporate unique touches of contemporary through the use of bold colors and artful design techniques of hand carving, molding, casting and inlay; each piece crafted with strong attention to detail. Although many descriptions can be written to describe the artist’s design philosophy, for Malou, it is beyond what can be said; rather, it must be worn in order to be understood. It is a mantra that is by itself an experience - every piece is a tangible experience of elegance, versatility of style, and the soul of an artist emanating the discipline and understanding the process of creation.

Joel Escober’s trademark is the application of heavy textures and bold embellishments, achieved through his masterful execution of fabric manipulation and appliqué-work. His designs often rest on the romantic side, with couture dresses and ready-to-wear ensembles that hint at old-world glamour. Escober’s cuts are mainly plain silhouettes, but the unexpected layering of adornments such as delicate laces, embroidered appliqués, hand-stitched sequins, ruffles and feathers create fashion pieces that are uniquely his. In 2013, he represented the country at the Mercedes Benz Stylo Asia Fashion Week in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in 2014, he was selected as one of the exhibitors for London Fashion Week’s complementary event, International Fashion Showcase, a special event for young and emerging international designers.

Being in the fashion industry for almost a decade, Kaye Morales considers fashion designing as her life calling. She is wellknown for catalyzing a beautiful mÊlange of avant-garde gowns and off-the-rack pieces that exude a unique style statement; with her collections rooted from the stories of her life, untold history of her inspirations, personality, and emotions. Each piece, from the choice of color to the texture of fabric and over all aesthetic, characterizes the unique vision of Kaye Morales – apparel, bags, and accessories created from a unique combination of materials from neoprene fabrics, fur, acrylic, leather, and denim to more unconventional materials such as vinyl records, cassette tapes and metal studs, transformed into wearable art using modern techniques; digital printing and 3D printing.

KEN SAMUDIO Ken Samudio is a marine biologist by profession specializing in biodiversity before embarking on the world of fashion armed only with raw natural talent and determination to succeed. Samudio began his venture in accessory design when he put up a luxury headpiece brand after seeing a void in the local headwear industry. Now, with his namesake label, he has expanded his collections to clutch bags and jewelries, combining luxurious components with street-style and quirky aesthetics to produce pieces characterized by form and function.

In 2015, Samudio was selected as one of Vogue Italia’s Vogue Talents Corner, which he considers as his greatest achievement. He was also personally handpicked twice by the British Fashion Council and Sarah Mower of Vogue US to participate in the IFS 2014 and 2015 at the London Fashion Week, as well as being selected by Pitti Imagine as one of their Super Talents in Milan for 2014.

LALLY DIZON Lally Cruz-Dizon has been trained in all aspects of bag making, from designing, product development, to pattern making, production up to the final stages of quality inspection. As Creative Director of their family’s bag exporting company, she was exposed to big buyers from Japan, Europe, and the US, collaborating with international designers to develop materials and colors, conceptualize styles and collections that were sold across the global market.

At present, Dizon is focused on her namesake luxury brand Lally Dizon, that specializes in bold colored hand bags, clutches and cuffs made from exotic skins of crocodile and python, adorned with her signature handmade accents set in 24k gold plated brass combined with semiprecious stones. Each piece is given utmost attention to detail, knowing that the woman carrying her creation is defined by style and discerning taste for all things beautiful.

MACO CUSTODIO Maco Custodio’s footwear gained fame for being unapologetically fierce. Towering clogs and tri-heels are but the tip of the iceberg in his footwear designs. His creations have often been described as shock art and seamless science, rolled into one - an influence of his background in industrial design. Custodio’s label, MACO, makes use of different types of leather mixed with plastic, canvass, indigenous woven textiles and other unexpected materials such as jeepney tires, goat skin, and fur to create distinctive pieces that have architectural undertones in both form and design. Fresh from his participation from the recently concluded 2016 International Fashion Showcase (IFS) in London, Custodio has recently expanded his line from footwear to minimalist-style hand bags; a simple, yet classy addition to his brand’s growing collections.

MICHELLINE SYJUCO

Perhaps one of the most daring and avant-garde designers today, Michelline Syjuco boldly fuses the art of sculpture with that of jewelry in order to create what she calls “sculptural jewelry”. Each one of her pieces is handmade from her choice of unconventional elements, such as cultivated rust, pointed steel studs, exploded bullet shells, and multicolor acid patinas. In 2014 she wowed audiences with the launch of her “Theater of the Mind” collection, where she showcased her “Yorick” Sculptural Skull Bags made of carved wood, automatic watch parts, repurposed bathroom fixtures, and gemstones.

MICKI OLAGUER Micki Olaguer began her love affair with jewelry as a child, being the daughter of a fine jeweller constantly exposed her to well-crafted jewelry at a young age. Inspired by architectural forms, historical and cultural artworks, Olaguer created her first collection entitled “Figmenta”, a blend of current and past - a collection of bold, stackable jewelry pieces in hand painted enamel with semi-precious center stones of lapis, lazuli, agate and jade set in 24k gold dipped brass. Olaguer’s curiosity for combining whimsical forms with mother-of-pearl led her to being awarded as winner at the Red Box Design Competition, 2015 and the Look of Style Awards in 2016, as well as being selected as an exhibitor at the 2016 International Fashion Showcase (IFS) in London, a special event that celebrates up and coming designers from around the world.

TIM TAM ONG Tim Tam Ong’s flair for creativity and passion to create beautiful things started young, being the daughter of an interior and furniture designer, she was exposed to design and aesthetics early on. Her jewelry brand started with a story of love and meeting cultures when she created her first necklace made from intricately sculpted stone accented with Burmese excavated beads. She has since opened her own boutique that showcases one of a kind jewelry pieces - one that tells a unique story and personality meant for every individual.

TRACY DIZON Milliner, Tracy Dizon describes her creations as “quirky, cute couture”. Her passion lies in creating one-of-a-kind avant-garde hats and head accessories, that are vibrant, colorful, and playful, inspired by “modern pop-art concepts”. Despite her international success, Dizon continues to embrace her Filipino roots, opting to use locally sourced sinamay fibers as main material for her festive hats, and incorporating other fun pieces such as plastic toy materials.
