A P RIL 2019
In This Issue
Summer Vibes We’ve had such beautiful weather since the year began, with a lovely cool breeze blowing through most evenings well up to the end of March. With April, however, comes warmer weather, and we’ve created our own homage to the summer at the entrance to Manila House with an eye-popping and mesmerizing display of brightly hued flowers suspended from the ceiling. The burst of color against the backdrop of the teal walls at the lower lobby makes an impact that’s at once dramatic, vibrant, and uplifting. How can one not help but smile when one walks under that floral canopy? What this month may not bring is April showers. El Niño season heralds dry weather, and a possible drought. While we have so far been fortunate in that we at Manila House have not yet been affected by water shortages other parts of Metro Manila are experiencing, even parts of Taguig, we should still be mindful of wasting water and make conscious efforts to limit our use of water. It's fitting that Earth Day falls on April 22, a timely reminder of how precious the earth’s resources are and how we should all be making the necessary changes to our lifestyle in order to keep the earth alive. In so doing, we keep ourselves alive, too. And when the heat starts getting to you, then get up and dance! On April 13, we'll host A Night at the Disco, a return to the heady days of the 70s and 80s onward, when international DJ John Robinson ruled the decks at the famous disco, Rumors. And while you’re in your Disco Glam best strutting it out on the dance floor, remember, you’re boogieing for a cause: the evening’s beneficiary is STEPS Scholarship Foundation, which was established by Founding Member Sofia Elizalde to provide assistance to promising dancers from disadvantaged backgrounds who want to pursue further studies in dance. So get your freak on, and to borrow a line from KC and the Sunshine Band, let’s celebrate good times, come on!

MEET TH E S TA FF
Get To Know: Angelie Caylao Thinking of hosting a themed party? Want to have an intimate but whimsical-looking wedding? Let Angelie take care of everything for you. With an eye for detail and a fun outlook for momentous occasions, she'll make all your event dreams come true How did you get into event coordination? It all started during my previous stint in One Esplanade. I was hired as a Junior Sales Executive and my main task was to plan, organize, promote, and coordinate different types of events though weddings are my favorite. The thought of making a bride’s wedding day absolutely perfect and helping to make the couple's wedding dreams come true is what drew me to this job field. Plated or buffet?
For me, event planning perfectly suits my personality and work ethic. I’ve always been a social butterfly, which never failed to get me into trouble during my younger years— I now realize that it is an extremely beneficial trait to have. I also love dealing with interesting people, from clients to guests, suppliers and performers, as well as speakers and consultants. You meet a wide range of individuals, dip into their world, and often be taught things you didn’t know or hadn’t experienced before. So, despite the stress and pressure, it’s still a really fun and satisfying profession to be part of.
It’s so hard to choose. However, if I had the budget, I would go for plated. This type of service is convenient, easier, and less hassle, and it would also make the experience more formal and elegant. Talk about your dream wedding. I started dreaming about my wedding since I was a little girl. However, as time goes by and with my past experiences, my perception of having a wedding has changed.
What event theme would you wish to pull off? I have two themes in mind: one for my hilarious side, for example, a Wear Anything But Clothes theme, and one for me being a hopeless romantic, a Second Chance Prom event.
It is typical for a girl to want to have her ideal wedding when she finally meets the man she wants to spend the rest of her life with. Some already have a picture of their gown in their head. As for me, working in this kind of industry made me realized that it is not just about the couple getting married or having a glamorous reception. It is also an exchange between the couple and their community of family and friends. It is a moment where the couple vows to be together as a pillar of support for each other, and simultaneously thanks their community for supporting and loving them.
What excites you most about parties? There’s nothing better than getting a bunch of friends together for good food, drinks, and conversation. I like going to parties where I can be myself and not pretend. I prefer parties where people actually talk to each other. Not by texting, but with *gasp* conversation.

Quintin Pastrana News anchor, poet, energy entrepreneur, reading advocate and patriot, Quintin Pastrana is a man with a mission. He is the founder of the Library Renewal Partnership, a coalition that builds libraries for literacy and community empowerment You’re a man with many passions. You’re involved in energy as well as literature and literacy. Do you find that they complement each other? How do you find time to present a news show as well?(!) I was educated at two Jesuit institutions on both sides of the pond and retained at least two things. First, to paraphrase Aristotle, “true happiness is the full use of your powers, along the lines of excellence, in a life affording them scope.” It's a constant touchstone. Second, the theme cura personalis (care for the whole person) warrants an integrated, balanced approach. Renewable energy (through WEnergy Power Pilipinas), especially in remote areas, is a catalyst for sustainable grassroots development. Literacy (both basic and financial, through the Library Renewal Partnership and ANC's On the Money) empower marginalized communities and a growing middle class to make informed decisions and take control of their lives, and literature (with the poetry and fiction books I've written) enliven the soul. I've been able to find a good schedule and synergy to make these work. For example, thanks to a great team and partners, we have community libraries in our renewable energy project sites apart from the other stand alone centers across the country and in Asia. And on weekends, through ANC, we have a growing classroom and international audience where we share best practices on entrepreneurship, investments, and personal finance. So far, so good. How did the library project come about? Do you find that in these far-flung towns and municipalities there is a hunger for good books and a thirst for knowledge? Watershed personal experiences are the best drivers for lifetime pursuits. I grew up with a learning disability and it was in the sacred space of a library that I began a long-quest for self-improvement. So during grad school, I worked on a paper focusing on public-private partnerships, and I chose to focus on how build more third spaces and communities through libraries. I put that paper to work when

A section of his signed first edition collection
As a writer constantly seeking to improve his craft, what is the best writing advice you’ve ever been given? Quintin's writing desk with a signed frame featuring the poet Edna St. Vincent Millay
To paraphrase and mash-up my professors at Oxford, and my mentor for this book I'm about to complete: 'litter the sky with stars, then find the constellations for poetry and prose. Or, build an edifice with your own voice and architecture, remove any unnecessary scaffolding, and let the chips fall where they may.'
I returned to my hometown in Kalibo, Aklan, made adjustments based on that experience, built a coalition, and over 900 libraries later, we've found that across communities, there is a robust, tremendous need for those third spaces, with a growing number of readers and leaders empowered through these strategically located community education centers, in partnership with civic groups and the local government. We're talking about democratic places you can seek refuge in, learn, collaborate in, and become your best self-regardless of socio-economic class, gender, or religious background.
You edited the groundbreaking book about Mangyan poetry, Bamboo Whispers, which also introduced you to ambahan poetry, to the point of influencing your own poetry. Why did it have such an impact on you? Going back to authenticity and identity, it was both serendipity and a point of pride for me to discover this versatile art form from our indigenous and precolonial heritage. Ambahan, with its seven syllable lines, which I've curated into seven-line stanzas, is poetry that speaks at the length of the human breath, and like the Mangyan, very conversational and sublime at the same time. I used to write in sonnets, haiku and tanka, but always felt that they were too restrictive and alien to me. With Ambahan, I can channel my own voice into a truly Filipino verse-form and expand its appreciation to a modern, wider audience with my new book (due to be published and released in 2020).
What challenges does the energy sector in the Philippines face? As an archipelago of over 100 million citizens, the country needs clean, reliable, and affordable energy to catalyze sustainable, inclusive development. From fisherfolk who need cold storage to preserve and market their precious catch, to local entrepreneurs who need good utilities and connected workspaces to create their goods and advance services, to schools that need lighting and electricity for technology-enabled learning: these involve last-mile delivery solutions that renewable and hybrid solutions can provide, and we're honored and privileged to be part of a growing coalition of firms that make that happen here and in other countries in Southeast Asia where over 120 million citizens still have no access to this vital resource.
What books are on your bedside table? Seneca's On the Shortness of Life, Aristotle's Theories on Fine Art and Poetry, Mary Oliver's collected poems, and F. Sionil Jose's Platinum and Other Stories.

A young artist takes inspiration from an old master and imbues his work with contemporary twists In his exhibition, Espina explores the classicism of van Dyck, composing his own representations of a royal court and its personalities, while adding unexpected and eccentric touches, such as gold leaf and heavily textured renderings of fabric. Other paintings take on a surreal quality. He even includes his own homage to the master himself.
he influence of the Flemish Baroque artist Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) is unmistakable in the art of 33-year-old Mark Lester Espina, whose monumental 8’ x 12’ painting “The Royal Family” was the centerpiece of J Studio’s recent exhibition at Air Fair Philippines. Van Dyck was the most important Flemish painter of the 17th century after Rubens, whose works influenced the young van Dyck. An extremely successful portraitist and painter of religious and mythological pictures in Antwerp and Italy, van Dyck was also an accomplished draughtsman and etcher. However, he is now best remembered for his elegant representations of the English King Charles I and his court.

At night, after the screams wake us, we hear
We hear him rummaging,
him make his walk to the kitchen,
rummaging,
hear his callused feet scuff the hardwood floor, hear him mutter curses at the carpet, its edge
He read aloud some of his poetry and short stories to the audience, and shared his own selections of outstanding contemporary poetry by the likes of Kim Addonizio and Sherman Alexie.

A Photographer's Journey Acclaimed international photographer Xyza Cruz Bacani, in conversation with Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, took us through her unusual but exciting path to achievement. Starting with her childhood as the daughter of a domestic worker working in Hong Kong, she talked about growing up without her mother, having little patience for school, then becoming a domestic worker herself, before discovering she had a talent for photography The talk was the kick-off to a new series at Manila House called Changing the Narrative, intimate conversations that put the spotlight on inspiring transformative journeys. Held at Anahaw last month to a packed and rapt audience, the event was also a fundraiser for
the FTW (For the Women) Foundation co-founded by Founding Member Cara Wilson. FTW is a non-profit organization that creates better economic opportunities for women scholars through free training in Data Science and Digital Marketing. Xyza on her start as a photographer: "When I first arrived in Hong Kong, I didn't have a very good relationship with my mother because she left when I was eight. As a growing girl, a lot of changes happened to me and I didn't have a mom with me. When I had my first period, I thought I was dying. I think these little things that happened in my life made our relationship not so good. So when I arrived in Hong Kong, and she wanted to be a mother to me, I'm like "Who are you?" "You were away for half of my life so why are you trying "Who are you?" "You were away for half of my to be a mom now?" I never understood why life so why are you trying she left. I thought she left because she wants a to be a mom now?" better life for herself but as we stayed together and worked together, I noticed that she never really goes out. She works seven days a week. Her life is confined in four walls. She only goes to the market and then goes back home. She stayed in Hong Kong for 20 years and she just learned to ride the MTR last year. That's how much sacrifice she has done. She never really saw Hong Kong, and so I picked up the camera and I realized, why not show it to her? Because our relationship is getting better, I feel so guilty about being a bad daughter. I decided, why not show Hong Kong through my photography. She was the main reason I became a photographer. I became her eye."

What do you enjoy about drinking Malbec?
Ambassador Nestor Ureta
Michael A. Gibb
Loy Saguil
Nina Halley
“The birth of Malbec in Argentina began when the former President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento hired the French agronomist Michel A. Pouget in 1852. Malbec quickly grew in popularity by grape growers because of the way it adapted to the terroir in Mendoza and its resistance.
“Malbec is a wine to enjoy for its simplicity and bouquet of blackberry, plum, and black cherry. Another part of its appeal to me is the hint of chocolate and tobacco.
“Malbec is a great red wine. What I like most about it is that it’s full and has that hint of spice.”
“Malbec wine comes with a dizzying range of tastes and textures, and is always a pleasure to have. For me, Malbec evokes so much of Argentina, a place of dizzying sensations-from art, culture, architecture, its people, its poetry, its dance-tango.
The most outstanding feature of the Malbec is its intense dark colour. The Malbec’s flavourings remind me of cherries, plums, strawberry, raisin, and black pepper. It’s warm, soft and sweet. Special for red meats, cheeses, and pasta with tomato sauce.
It is also a wine with antioxidant qualities, which are appealing.”
Malbec is blended with many other varieties of grapes, and always, the marriage of the two produces wine that is even more superior in taste and texture. For me, the marriage of the Philippines and Argentina, is similar-a life that is richer and more gratifying.”
Every 17th of April since 2011, Argentina celebrates Malbec Day in commemoration of the 17th of April 1853, the day and year it arrived in. This year, we are celebrating the 9th Malbec World Day with the theme Malbec Argentino: Elegance Doesn’t Need Perfection.”

Make it Malbec Why is the New World wine Malbec gaining popularity all over the world? Manila House Wine Steward, Gazelle Ingua, explains the appeal of the Argentinian signature wine Malbec is known for its plump, dark fruit flavors and smoky finish. In Argentina, the main fruit flavors in a glass are blackberry, plum, and black cherry. The nuanced flavors offer milk chocolate, cocoa powder of oak aging a sweet tobacco finish. While in France it is leathery with flavors of tart currant, black plum, and savory bitterness. FRUIT: Black cherry, pomengranate, plum, raspberry, blackberry OTHER: Cocoa, black pepper, tabacco OAK: Vanilla, dill, chocolate, mocha ACIDITY: Medium TANNIN: Medium TEMP: 21°C BLENDS: Blended commonly in Right bank Bordeaux with merlot and petit Verdot In Argentina, Malbec is occasionally blended with Bonarda. Food pairing: Dark meat poultry pairs well with earthy flavors such as beef brisket, duck, and chicken leg. Lamb also pairs well For cheese: cow’s and goat’s milk cheeses For vegetarian: mushroom, roasted bell pepper, arugula, black beans, and onion
Malbec is an enjoyable wine. Unlike Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec doesn’t have super long finish. Malbec is great with leaner red meat. The wine does extremely well with funky flavors. What Malbec wines do we carry here? Malbec, Septima, Argentina 2016 - P1,800 Malbec, Aruma, Argentina 2014 - P2,500 Malbec, Felino, Argentina 2016 - P2,700
