IN THE HOUSE MAY 2023

MAYTIME MUSINGS

It's May and our thoughts naturally turn to Mother. Hallmark once said that they sold the most cards on Mother's Day. I wonder if that still holds true in this era of e-cards and SMS greetings, but Mother's Day remains one of the most popular special days in the world, and understandably so. The bond between a mother and child, primal and instantaneous as it is, is often the first attachment an individual makes. As that individual goes through life, the degree of that attachment can vary in intensity and complexity, of course, but I would like to think that for most people, the love of a mother guides, sustains and endures.

On Sunday, May 14, we celebrate Mother's Day with our traditional buffet brunch. It has always been one of our crowd-drawer events, and this year, postpandemic, we look forward to celebrating fully with all mothers and their families at the Club.

Happening in this merry month of May, too, is everyone's favorite Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo. Our celebration comes a day late (May 6), but with the full Mexican experience intact - tequilas, margaritas, tacos, burritos, even a Mariachi band! It's a fiesta you won't want to miss.

And on May 17, we launch our Concert Series with an American Idol crowd favorite - in fact, there are many who think she should have won - Jessica Sanchez. The Filipino-American powerhouse has only gone from strength to strength after her stint on American Idol, and she comes to Manila House to perform at a very special dinner-concert.

Mothers, music and margaritas: we've got you covered for May.

MEET THE TEAM

Managing a family and having to work entails a lot of effort to be equally good at both roles. How to balance it? I think the key word is love. Loving what you both do, fostering my kids, doing household errands and still managing to have a fulfilling career.

It is certainly not easy. I am a mom of three boys (four, actually, if I add my husband!) and even now I struggle with balancing my work and home life. I just made a promise to myself that no matter how busy I am, I will always find time to be present for my boys and to enjoy every bit of it.

Being a working mom, I manage to achieve balance through setting limits and priorities. Since I'm consuming 48 hours a week at work, when I'm at home, I make sure that I'm dedicating my time to my two year-old daughter. I'm the one to prepare her food and milk, bathe her before going to bed, and put her to sleep at night. During weekends, there are no excuses for me not to play with her and have some study time!

Being organized and having exceptional time management are key factors to balancing motherhood and my career. I always make sure that my son and I have quality time and a good conversation before he goes to sleep. Indeed, motherhood is challenging but I'm glad that my work allows me to have time for my family and to still be able to devote time and energy to my professional career development.

The challenge is time management. It’s a difficult process, and tiring, but for the sake of children and family, a mother does what she can to fulfill the needs of her child. Work is still a time-consuming process, but I choose to do it for my family. At the same time, I am proud to be a mother like myself, a working mother. It's hard but as a mother and woman, you find a way to juggle work and motherhood.

DIRECTORY

It is not easy to balance motherhood and a career, but it is possible if you work hard and stay positive! It is not easy but mothers can truly be the best version of themselves when they make room for everything else.

UNVEIL THE SECRET OF EL NIDO: Experience Luxury in Simplicity at Lihim Resorts

In the Philippine lingua franca, Lihim directly translates to secret.

A secluded lagoon on Bacuit Bay reveals an expansive gradient of turquoise waters. Its surface sparkles like gems under rays of the sun. Some parts of the day, it is a looking glass that bares the storied underwater life of Palawan.

The luxury of experiences is something that unfolds itself at Lihim. In this well-kept secret, tucked in the depths of paradise’s last frontier, senses go on a journey where myth, magic, and mystery come to life. The curator, mastermind, director, and grand host behind all these: nature.

The exclusive experience in-property and on-location menu curated by Lihim Resorts promises to astonish.

Built in the tradition of Philippine huts, accommodations echo the warmth and brand of hospitality distinct to the country and reflect a design sensibility deeply anchored on local culture and everyday life. All sixteen villas on the property offer unparalleled views of El Nido’s storied vistas. With the opulent touch of personal butler, the team offers bespoke services tailored to cater to guests’ desires – from in-room check-in to hanging clothes in your walk-in wardrobe to organizing private parties to planning all activities within and outside of the property and to addressing every need and qualm.

VICKY MAGPANTAY

answers the MH Questionnaire

"Success is when you achieve contentment in your life. It is when you are able to do the things you love the most."

Tell us what you do.

I am a migration consultant and property and investment marketer for residency/citizenship in Portugal, US and other countries.

How do you define success?

Success is when you achieve contentment in your life. It is when you are able to do the things you love the most. It is the point where you work because you truly enjoy what you do and not because you have to.

What life lessons did you derive from the pandemic?

The pandemic heightened my compassion towards other people. It made me appreciate and love my family and friends more.

What’s the last movie/series you watched?

Women Talking

What book is on your bookshelf but you’ve never read?

IKIGAI: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life

What would you like to see in the “next normal”?

I would like to see improvement in our medical services, government services, and reliable food supply for all. Additionally, awareness in preserving our environment.

What’s your favorite thing about Manila House?

Manila House offers its Members a feel of exclusivity and is very well located.

If you had to be quarantined (again) which country would you choose to be in?

If I had to be quarantined again, I chose to be in the USA. During the pandemic brought about by Covid, the US was first to get the vaccines, the first to go back to work and school face to face and they made sure that there were medical facilities and food supply was readily available.

PORTUGAL CALLING

You don’t need to be a Russian oligarch to seek citizenship or residency via investment in Portugal under the country’s popular Golden Visa scheme. An increasingly popular destination for many Filipino families considering a second passport, the Golden Visa scheme, as Vicky Magpantay- Luis, President of Golden Visa Centrale, discussed in a recent webinar, is affordable and extremely attractive. Joining her were Rosalia Torres, Head of Sales and International Markets at Arish Capital Partners, Rakesh Majithia, Chief Investment Officer at Arish Capital Partners, and Atty. Andre Miranda, Founder and Managing Partner at Pinto Ribeiro Advogados, who explained the requirements, procedures, investment opportunities - not to mention the benefits of living - in the sunny European country.

TALES OF THE ORIENT

Our first hybrid program with Asia Society Philippines discussed the intersection between ‘Orientalism’ and the Filipino Identity. The Making of the Other: Orientalism and the Filipino Identity features three experts coming from different fields-Wawi Navarroza, Meah Ang See, and Dr. Rommel Curaming.

All three of the panelists brought in different perspectives of the arts, culture, and policy into the conversation, tackling a wide array of topics ranging from the authenticity of the post-colonial Filipino identity to the modern manifestations of Orientalism that we experience today. The program also highlighted that an individual's identity is not defined by their nationality; instead, it is constantly evolving in a globalized world.
