Smoke and Plumes
M
y younger daughter is in Mexico at the moment doing a semester abroad. Every morning as she walks from her apartment to the university, she looks up and sees Popocatepetl blowing smoke from its peak, which rises 5,426 meters from the ground. She greets the active volcano—whose name actually means “smoking mountain” in Aztec—with awe and nonchalance; after a month in Mexico, she regards it like the locals around her do: as part of the landscape. If they live in terror, awaiting the mother of all eruptions, they don’t show it. Life, clearly, must go on. The people of Taal and its environs must have felt that same way. The view of the volcano from the lake, or from the ridge in Tagaytay, was always breathtaking, but, as they recently discovered as they survey their ash-covered villages, everything has changed—and they’re still waiting for the Big One. The eruption of Taal revealed both the majesty of nature and our own vulnerability. How do we prepare for the Big One? And how do we minimize is impact on the livelihoods of those most affected? And how do we go on with life in the aftermath of such a calamity? Join us on Tuesday, February 4 at 6PM as we tackle this subject head-on.

Not to be blithe or insensitive, but those of us who have been spared the brunt of Taal’s wrath are truly fortunate, and in between efforts to help evacuees and organize donations, we could raise a glass or two to life.

Get to Know: The Bar Captain From classic cocktails to bespoke beverages, Paul Jay Repala brings his own flair to the art of mixology How did you get your start in Manila House? How long have you been with the Club? I applied online through Jobstreet and eventually got hired and started as a bartender for Avenue Bar. After 10 months, I was promoted to Bar Captain. I’ve been happily working in Manila House for two years. What personal traits do you think a bartender should possess? An aspiring bartender should be positive, hardworking, and convincing. I believe that these traits will always bring guests back for another drink!
Which would you choose? Vodka or Gin? Gin Soda or Tonic Water? Tonic Water Olive or Lemon Twist? Lemon Twist
What would you recommend as an after-dinner drink? Since we often end our meals with a cup of coffee, I would suggest an Espresso Martini or a coffee-flavored cocktail made out of Kahlua, vodka and freshly-brewed espresso. If you were to make a “love potion” what would it contain? This concoction would be best enjoyed by the ladies— a gin-based drink infused with strawberry, raspberry, and whipped cream. I’d call it Berry Blush.
What do you usually do on your day off? Sundays are sacred for me since it is family and church day. I want to spend time with my wife and three daughters as much as possible. I also play basketball, which I also play with my girls since they seem to enjoy it!

Belle Morales
An accomplished businesswoman now making her mark in the construction and interiors industry, Belle Morales returned to settle in Manila after decades of living in the US. Before bringing The Sliding Door Company to the Philippines, she had a long and successful career in international logistics that saw her being featured in publications such as the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times What made you move back to the Philippines after many years in the US? How do you divide your time between the US and the Philippines? I was working for an international logistics company in the US for almost 20 years when I was offered a compelling opportunity to spearhead the international expansion of a client, The Sliding Door Company, the leader in interior glass door solutions in North America. 5
I have always admired these premier glass doors for their unparalleled quality, patented smooth mechanism, and client-focus for customization. I even thought of purchasing these doors for a condominium I bought in BGC before I moved back to the Philippines in 2016 but it was not available locally then. Consequently, because of the strong economic position of the Philippines and its gateway location to the burgeoning Asian market, we decided to
locate the company’s first international office in Manila. I spend almost 90 percent of my time in Asia because of the business but I still visit the US for a few days several times a year. How did you find your niche in the construction industry? We introduced the Sliding Door Company in the Worldbex Tradeshow

at the World Trade Center Manila where we received positive feedback and even generated business opportunities from several key clients including Okada Manila, one of the biggest integrated resorts in Asia, yielding a first order of 2,000 doors! What are the challenges the construction industry in the Philippines faces? The construction industry in the Philippines is on an upward trajectory. Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez advised that the industry is looking to boost its contribution to P130 trillion from just P2.3 trillion last year. While all sectors of the industry definitely welcome this growth, one of the biggest challenges is the lack of skilled labor causing delays in the turn-over of projects. Because our doors are installed during the interior phase near the completion of construction, project delays impact our delivery and installation thus impacting our accounting cycle. You enjoy fine wine and food. What are your favorite wines? What is your go-to dish at Manila House? I was fortunate to travel quite a bit at a young age because of my work.
I learned about several “B’s” from wine connoisseurs: Bordeaux and Burgundy from France, and Barolo from Italy. I would bring home (US then) a couple of bottles from each trip but I still really enjoy wines from California. I leaned towards Chardonnay and some of my favorites were Cakebread Cellars and Far Niente wineries in Napa Valley. Recently however, since becoming a Member of Manila House, I began to appreciate Glenmorangie whisky and Remy Martin cognac (as I attended their events at Manila House).
brought to Manila House in the past liked this truffle popcorn so much that I would even order this “to-go” for her!
For my go-to-dishes at Manila House, I love the Davao Goat Cheese Salad, Manila House Roll, Spicy Roll Tuna, Pan Seared Salmon and Salmon Laing. I normally order and recommend these dishes to clients for our weekday lunch/dinner meetings.
Any destinations still on your bucket list?
For weekend breakfast, I always crave the egg white goat cheese omelette with the warm/freshly baked pandesal and hot chamomile tea! When I want to reward myself, I go for the buffet weekend brunch. Another unique food item from Manila House (if I can call it food) is the truffle popcorn! It is served in the bar but I would order it as a side. A friend/client of mine whom I
What tech gadget would you like to use less of in 2020? I almost have all the Apple products for tech gadgets. I still have two cellphones (one local and another for the US). I would like to purchase a two-SIM card iPhone soon so I would only need to look at one cellphone screen. Does that count as using less of a tech gadget?!
I am reacquainting myself with the beautiful islands of the Philippines. I was born in the Philippines but spent my adult life in the US, so I missed the chance to see what our country has to offer. Even though I have already visited Palawan, Siargao and Balesin previously, I shockingly only visited Iloilo and Davao just last year. On my local bucket list are Banwa Island, Amanpulo, Batanes, Sagada (and other smaller islands), while my international bucket list contains South Africa, Cuba, Iceland, Greece, Peru, Russia, Nepal. 6

Out of the Ordinary
An exhibit featuring an unusual assemblage of artists, Atypical is not your typical collection of Philippine contemporary art
Carlos Saavedra, The Migration, 72x72 in., 2017
A
typical is comprised of paintings from artists worthy of your attention but not part of the typical bucket list of artists a mainstream collector might put together. The collection is very eclectic, just as the current state of Philippine contemporary art is varied. What the exhibit highlights is a cross-section of the current scene, and introduces the viewer to a number well-known or much sought-after artists, or artist’s pieces in a style that may be unfamiliar or atypical. Louie Cordero’s The Black Presidents is an early work from the critically acclaimed Black series. This series, while still being reflective of the contemporary idiom, whether street or pop art, is markedly different from the artist’s recent output. 7
Gene Paul Martin’s What Dispersion of Light Through A Prism Looks Like is a massive early work that is regarded as a transitional piece from his initial series to his current series. Jim Orencio has been branded as the Monet of the Philippines. Threat is a painting that was executed in three days while the artist was incensed over the practice of Kaingin in a neighboring farm. Rather than an idyllic countryside scene, the artist shows nature ravaged by development. Sandra Fabie-Gfeller is known for painting dancers. The Incredible Lightness of Being chronicles a meditative moment during her son’s foray into competitive swimming.

Jerson Samson’s Harvester of Sorrows is a visceral work which is far removed from the artist’s current series. It is a strong work that is influenced by several masters' techniques. Carlo Saavedra’s The Migration is a massive work that is one of his better large pieces of abstraction. Curated by Toñico Manahan, other pieces in the exhibit include paintings by Anton Mallari, Renz Baluyot, Ciron Seneres, Rommel Sampana, and Butch Payawal.

A Badass Comes to Town
New York Times bestselling author, success coach and motivational cattle prod Jen Sincero comes to Manila House to show you how you, too, can transform your life
J
en Sincero has helped countless people transform their personal and professional lives via her products, speaking engagements, newsletters, seminars and books. Her #1 New York Times bestseller, You Are a Badass®: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life (2013), has sold over three million copies, is available in over 30 languages, and continues to grow in popularity around the globe. Her follow-ups, You Are a Badass® at Making Money: Master the Mindset of Wealth (2017), also a New York Times bestseller, and You Are a Badass® Every Day: How To Keep Your Motivation Strong, Your Vibe High and Your Quest For Transformation Unstoppable, are written with the same inimitable sass, down-to-earth humor and blunt practicality that made You Are a Badass® an indomitable bestseller and Jen a celebrated voice in the world of self development.
“I really felt like, ‘if I don’t get it together now, I’m in my damn 40s, when the hell am I going to do it?’” This self-help guru's approach is practical and sassy, with the authenticity that comes from her own experience: she knows whereof she speaks because she was broke once and now her net worth runs to millions of dollars. As she told New York magazine in an interview, she was in her 40s when she—a broke freelance writer living in a converted garage by the beach—decided to get rich. 9
“I really felt like, ‘if I don’t get it together now, I’m in my damn 40s, when the hell am I going to do it?’” she says. “So I made the decision to start making money.” Sincero turned to self-help books, despite her initial feeling that the genre was “so dorky and woo-woo.” After reading dozens upon dozens of self-help best-sellers like The Science of Getting Rich and Loving What Is: Four Questions That Can Change Your Life, she realized she spotted an opening: none of them were funny. She thought, “I could do this.” Her first book was published in 2013, and although sales were slow but steady at first, it was only after a few years that it climbed to the top of the New York Times bestseller list. The rest, as they say, is history. M E ET TH E BADASS: JE N S I N CE RO WE D N ES DAY | FE B RUARY 12 | 6 PM Members: FREE | Guests: P500 Copies of Jen Sincero’s books will be sold before the event. The eruption of Taal Volcano last month put the whole country on alert. Are we ready for the big one? A risk assessment expert weighs in
T
aal Volcano was, until very recently, a picturesque and popular tourist attraction. That lake within a small volcano within a larger lake had seemed small and silent, and the threat of an eruption seemed remote since the last one in 1977. The events of January 12, 2020 changed all that, and PHIVOLCS warns that there is still magmatic activity going on inside Taal Volcano, and a cataclysmic explosion remains a possibility. So how to we prepare for the big one? Gregory Wyatt, a risk assessment expert with PSA Consulting, presents a compelling talk on the possible risks of such an event, how businesses may be impacted, and how to prepare for natural calamities.
