ON THE LEVEL It has been an absolute delight to open Manila House to Members and their guests once more, after almost two months of ECQ. In keeping with government regulations under Level 4 alert, we are limiting access to fully vaccinated Members and Guests, and ask that all who come to the Club show proof of vaccination. We are so appreciative of the fact that Members are complying with this rule. It’s important for everyone who comes into the Club to feel safe, including our Staff, all of whom are fully vaccinated, too. You may have noticed a few changes around Manila House, starting from the ground floor entrance, whose walls are now coated with a fresh green shade, and complemented by stunning artworks. Upstairs, our Retail Corner has been revitalized; we are constantly adding exciting and well-curated ranges of homeware, accessories and books, including the most covetable books from Assouline, not to mention selected tomes from Ayala Museum. And at the far end of the bar, we have begun construction on an exciting new addition to the Club’s facilites. All we can say at this point is that it will be a stunning room that occupies the area where The Grill used to be, a chic and cozy space that will be well worth the wait. As we head into October, the news that almost 70 per cent of the NCR population has been fully vaccinated leaves us feeling hopeful and elated. This is accompanied by the decrease in daily COVID positive cases and the concurrent increase in economic activity, bodes well for the last quarter of the year.
HOW TO SIGN UP Manila House Rewards is easy and convenient to access. The attached hyperlink https://manila-house.eber.co takes you to the registration/login page. You will be able to log in to your account using the primary email or mobile number connected to your Club membership.

THE HOUSEKEEPING TEAM In a world of pandemic with mutating virus, keeping our space clean and orderly is our number one priority. Our diligent Housekeeping Team, composed of Ester Tanasac, Imy Bedayos, Shirley Domeyeg, Arlene Miranda and Benjie Mercado, is key to making sure Manila House remains a safe environment.
How long have you been with Manila House and what were you doing before joining the Club? Ester: I started working in Manila House in 2017 and my previous work was as a production operator in an electronics company. Imy: I was a nanny before I joined Manila House about a year ago. Shirley: I’ve been with Manila House for four years! Before that I worked as a school cashier and admin staff at the same time. Arlene: I worked as a kitchen staff before, and I’ve been part of Manila House for two years now. Benjie: I’m very grateful to be working in Manila House for four years. I used to work in a hotel in Quezon City before that..
3
Masks and face shields were removed for photo purposes
Arlene: I agree, not much difference except that the disinfecting is more frequent. Benjie: It was more tiring before the pandemic because the Club had more space! I feel a bit pressured now though because we have to make sure people can feel that they are safe when inside the Club. What is your favorite spot in Manila House, and why? Ester: My favourite spot in Manila House is the Avenue Deck because the ambience is so relaxing and you can see the beauty of BGC! Imy: My favorite spot is Avenue Deck, too! The open air is refreshing and the view is nice at night.
What was the difference between your tasks before and during the pandemic? How do you keep Manila House as safe and hygienic as possible?
Shirley: Avenue Deck as well! Best for looking over the BGC skyline.
Ester: The main difference is the number of guests we used to serve in the Club… it is now more controlled and limited. We also make sure that alcohol and sanitizer dispensers are available around the Club to make sure that our guests can use them anytime they want!
Benjie: Honestly my favorite spot in Manila House is the reception area! I had a memorable photo op there some years ago.
Imy: Our tasks were definitely lighter before, compared to now when we need to be more cautious and hygienic. We make sure to regularly clean and sanitize all areas.
Ester: I want to go on a vacation in my province so that I can see my lovely daughter!
Shirley: For me there’s not much difference in the sense that we’ve always done our best to keep Manila House clean and sanitized.
Shirley: I would like to go back to my hometown in Aklan. It’s been almost a decade since I’ve bene there.
Arlene: Avenue Deck is such a romantic spot!
If there were no pandemic, where would you want to go?
Imy: I want to go to Bacolod to visit my daughter.
MH | M E E T O U R T E A M
Arlene: Zambales… or Enchanted Kingdom together with my kids.
POP QUIZ
What do you do to destress and relax?
• The best cleaning agent I recommend is... Imy: Lysol Disinfecting Spray! Shirley: Zonrox the multicleaner! Arlene: Another vote for Zonrox!
Ester: I always think of the good things that happened and I cherish every moment --- that’s how I deal with stress and enables me to work with love!
• If I could dress up for Halloween it would be as...
Imy: I love to eat and watch movies. Shirley: I relax by having alone time and drinking coffee while listening to music. Arlene: I listen to music… and sleep! Benjie: I eat a lot! Haha! And sometimes go somewhere I haven’t been to yet.
Ester: Maleficent Imy: Annabelle Shirley: Maleficent too! Arlene: Starline’s Avenging Assassin •T he last TV series I binged watch was... Ester: Pinocchio Imy: Ang sa Iyo ay Akin Arlene: Korean Dramas The Heirs, Squid Game, and Penthouse

ANGEL & DAVID GUERRERO answer the Manila House Questionnaire
“Success should be defined in one’s own terms, the pursuit of your own goals and it should motivate you to push your limits.” What’s the last movie/series you watched? Angel: The discovery of the intersection of music and technology, so well presented by the credible music-geek, songwriter and DJ Mark Ronson in the documentary miniseries, “Watch The Sound with Mark Ronson” on apple TV. David: I watched the restored version of My Fair Lady(1964) on Netflix with Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison. I knew a lot of the songs but I had never seen the film before. It’s great. What book is in your bookshelf but you’ve never read?
Tell us what you do. Angel: I am a publisher of a magazine that covers the world of creativity. David: I am Creative Chairman of BBDO Guerrero, an advertising agency. How do you define success? Angel: The triumphant feeling when the all the mussels open up when I’m cooking Moules Marinière. But seriously, the idea of success is sometimes misrepresented and creates undue pressure when there needs to be none. Success should be defined in one’s own terms, the pursuit of your own goals and it should motivate you to push your limits. David: Success is completing something you care about. From a 30-minute workout to a four-year degree. And from writing a 30-second commercial to a 300-page book. What life lessons did you derive from the pandemic? Angel: The pandemic put us all on pause. The world benefited from this pause, healing our over-worked environment visibly observed by the lack of smog in the city center and more birds are singing. This pause allowed me to take stock and redefine what matters and what matters most. A discovery that we as people, once put in unchartered situations, become more adaptive and creative than we could ever imagine. David: I learned to be grateful. Tried to be more generous. And finally understood the motto of my old university (Sussex, England) which is “Be Still and Know.”
Angel: There are quite a few but I want to find time to pick up “A Visit from the Goon Squad” by Jennifer Egan. It is seemingly very smart and very funny. Need a dose of that. David: Will Self ’s novel “Phone.” I just never get round to picking it up. What song can’t you get out of your head? Angel: Billy Eilish’s debut and career-defining song, Ocean Eyes. David: We work with a lot of great music at work. Currently: “Total Eclipse of the Heart” by Bonnie Tyler (for Pepsi) and “It’s Always a Good Time” by Owl City and Carly Rae Jepsen (for Megaworld Lifestyle Malls.) What would you like to see in the “next normal”? Angel: A fine-tuned world where the truth prevails. David: Something like the old normal but with a lot less CO2. What’s your favorite thing about Manila House? Angel & David: Unanimously, your Davao Goat’s Cheese Salad, ‘made with mounds of goat’s cheese, arugula leaves, plus bits of watermelon and cherry tomatoes for a burst of summer sweetness in every forkful.’ If you had to be quarantined (again) which country would you choose to be in? Angel: Where we are now. Home in the Philippines. David: Yes, agree. No place like home.

PANDEMIC INSPIRATIONS
A SOLO SHOW BY BRYAN TEVES COMES TO MANILA HOUSE “Rest To Ration” is a solo exhibition by artist Bryan B. Teves, who took inspiration f rom the pandemic and the unexpected benefits that the situation has brought the world, despite the pain that it’s also caused — circumstances that have allowed the environment a moment of respite from the daily drudgery of traffic and machinery. Teves’ life-like depictions of both flora and human figures are thanks to his use of real models to reproduce his ideas in real life before he commits them onto his preferred medium. In many of the show’s works, abundant foliage snakes around a woman, who rests peacefully with a tranquil smile on her face while embraced by the vegetation. He skilfully renders the representations onto canvas using oil paint, which he prefers because of its malleability and the flexibility it affords the artist, a quality needed to produce his smooth and fluid pictorial portrayals of bodies and foliage.
As with most of Teves’ paintings, he takes inspiration from nature, injecting a positive or negative connotation onto his renderings as he sees fit. In this case, it was the pandemic and the subsequent positive effect it has had on our natural surroundings, despite the corresponding negative effects it may have also brought with it. With this collection, Teves communicates his hope for both nature and daily human life to return to normalcy. The exhibit’s title, Rest To Ration (restoration), serves as an ode to the way Mother Nature was given the breathing space to restore itself to its natural beauty and wonder, if only for this short moment.

DESIGN FOR LIFE
Design informs everything we do, and everything we use, whether we acknowledge it or not. Design thinking is a mind
shift that helps us solve challenges in life, and can be applied to the expression of Filipino culture, heritage and identity. Discussing the relevance of design and design thinking was a panel of designers, educators and stylists from the
creative fields: Ramon Galicia (Academic Chairperson of SoFA Design Institute), Amina Arañaz (Accessories Designer) and Ram Lopez-Vito Bucoy (Interior Stylist)
“Going to design school does not mean you are locked into becoming a fashion designer or an interior designer… Of course it happens, many times, that after finishing a course you realize it’s not the path for you. However, really learning to think like a designer, how to navigate the unknown, can solve problems, ask the right questions, answer questions, empathize with people and find solutions - all of these are life skills. These are skills that you can use, whichever path you take. Personally, skills I have used also in my entrepreneurship path. Fro me, being a designer and an entrepreneur is so interlinked, and they complement each other in so many ways, because studying design teaches you to be open-minded, it teaches you to not just look for one solution, but to find many answers, look for a variety of answers..” ~ Amina Arañaz
“[When] I [chose to] take that jump, I think at that particular moment, I was able to realize that yes, it may not be definitive where I’m going, but I think having that sense of purpose, passion and meaning, regardless whether it was going to be a failure or not, is something that is very ‘design-thinking.’ It’s very open-ended - I didn’t know. I was in the US looking for a job, doing odd jobs, during 2007-2008 when the economy was slumping. I had to go home. But it was okay. Because I would rather work in a place that would not be paying so much, at least during that time, but I know that I find meaning, that I’m happy, waking up and creating and giving my value.” ~ Ramon Galicia
“I wish I had gone to design school. It took a lot of convincing, but it still didn’t work out for my family. I’m definitely take a design course next year. One thing you have to do is to be really open to learning, and open to failure. Because things won’t be like a yellow brick road for everyone. There can be bumps along the way; learn from it and don’t be discouraged, just be happy and put out all your positive energy towards it. As long as your passion is there, things will thrive. That’s how I see it.” ~ Ram Lopez-Vito Bucoy

TALIBAN 2.0
MH | I N C A S E Y O U M I S S E D I T
After 20 years in Afghanistan fighting a “forever” war, the United States pulled out. This action was the result of a slapdash agreement with the Taliban and the administration of then-president Donald Trump, which president Joseph Biden chose to honor. It was the right thing to do, even if it was even if it was awkwardly carried out at the beginning. By the August 31 withdrawal date, the US and its allies managed to evacuate over 100,000 US citizens, dual Afghan and US citizens, aid workers, Afghans who had worked with the US during the 20 year occupation as translators, drivers, photographers and the like. Many Aghans still remain, desperate to leave and fearing retribution from the Taliban. In 2001, after the invasion of Afghanistan, it was thought that the Taliban had been largely neutered. However, considering the swiftness with which the entire country fell to Taliban control in August – it took a mere two weeks, itʼs clear that the Taliban – extreme Islamists who donʼt believe in education and independence for women – are back in power. Have they changed? Has the USʼs Aghan adventure, for want of a better word, been the abject failure the mainstream media has made it out to be? Is there hope for Afghanistan and the Afghans? These questions and more were discussed at a recent webinar featuring a distinguished panel that consisted of seasoned international journalist and news presenter Veronica Pedrosa, former United Nations Environment Programme management expert Ernie Wijanco, and political analyst Victor Manhit.
“Whenever I think of Afghanistan, I think of that time [my ex-husband, a CNN cameraman] went there before the Taliban and after the Taliban. During the Taliban rule, he managed to get the Taliban to allow CNN in there and to take some reports. As you know - anyone knows who’s been watching over the last couple of weeks, they are no fans of journalists. So they came up with all sorts of hoops for the journalists to jump through, and coming up with the restriction that if CNN was going to film under the Taliban supervision, they were not to film anything living because this was, in their strict interpretation of Islam haram, or forbidden. So they scratched their heads a bit and came up with a really creative bit of television, I thought. It was an absolutely evocative way of the dehumanizing of society that happened during Taliban rule. What happened was that they filmed the shoes of people outside a classroom... or an empty classroom and you could hear the children in the background crying, shouting and playing. You could see a skyline of Kabul, for example, you could hear the call to prayer. It was extremely evocative, you get a sense of a place where humans are not allowed to be human.” ~ Veronica Pedrosa “At the end of the day, we miss also the point that the whole government collapsed, the military collapsed. And what do you have as an alternative? It’s a reality and it’s quite sad for the people of Afghanistan. It’s a reality that the image of their two-term president Karzai meeting with the Taliban [presents]. What was that? That the first president being engaged by the US but was not strong enough? What about the vicepresident, the sitting vice-president? He’s still there in Afghanistan. Maybe as things settle down, we will see some of these issues evolving. Will the Taliban rule by their old ways? Will there be a disconnect between the one that is more international looking or the ones with the mullahs? It’s hard to speculate at this time. I believe that they also have to deal with the warlords all over the region, whether they use force to fight them again. But that will drain their resources internally.” ~ Victor Manhit
“Afghanistan sits on approximately $1million to $3million worth of precious metals like lithium and China wants to get into that. But how much - how do you say, the detail is in the devil - exactly how much and where would they allow China to do those mines? There’s a lot of archeological sites - that’s also a question for some of the Afghans… [As for opium] opium grows in very poor soil and very poor conditions, so it’s easy to grown them. Afghanistan has a lot of frozen assets abroad - $9 million in New York and somewhere else… if they don’t get the money, they’re just going to grow more opium - ‘okay, if you don’t free up our money, then we’ll just export more opium.’” ~ Ernie Wijangco

BEATING THE BURNOUT BLUES
As we pass the 18-month mark of the pandemic, we continue to live in a state of constant stress and anxiety, enduring constant lockdowns and worrying about emerging COVID variants while trying to go about our daily lives - personally and professionally - as normally as is possible under the current circumstances. In fact, as wellness expert, health advocate and preventive medicine doctor (and Manila House Member) Kaycee Reyes, MD, said in a recent online conversation, itʼs completely normal to feel overwhelmed, but she offered strategies to avoid burnout. While her clinic Luminisce Holistic Skin Innovation primarily focuses on skin care, she has expanded the range of services to include life coaching and wellness, pointing out that many conditions, including stress, can be gleaned from the state of our skin. Seven lucky Members won a host of luxurious treatments, courtesy of Luminisce, during the special raffle draw.
