The Spirit of Travel

In This Issue

It has been said that consumers these days would rather spend on experiences, not things. Experiences convert into memories and moments, much more prized than mere material goods.

FAQ

3

More often than not, these experiences involve travel, with the corresponding moments and memories not only captured on smartphone cameras, but documented on Instagram! And yet it’s impossible to overstate the wonder of travel, which brings with it the joy of discovery, or the pleasures of companionship, or the appreciation for the exotic, or the appetite for adventure. Whether one travels to distant lands or the city next door, there is always an element of being transported to somewhere different. And then, of course, there is the accidental tourist, as the novelist Anne Tyler called the armchair traveler who dreams of destinations and imagines foreign cities without physically ever visiting them. In this issue, we play accidental tourist, visiting places near and far whose roads and hills and valleys and rivers our members have already staked out for us. And when you’re done with your travels, armchair or not, come back home to Manila House. We’ll be waiting for you.

MEET TH E S TA FF

Get to Know: Jeremie Benisano Our resident mixologist and bartender, Jeremie Benisano, talks hard... liquor, that is

Beer or wine? Neither of the two, I would prefer whiskey, because it can be enjoyed neat, straight-up, on the rocks and even in cocktails. Gin or vodka? I choose gin, simply because I love the creativity of the Master Distillers of gins in creating and combining different herbs, fruits and spices to have their own distinct taste. How did you get into bartending & mixology? I started out as a concierge officer in one of the most prestigious casinos in the Philippines. I was asked to permanently transfer to bartending because of my brief background as a bar trainee. I immediately found my passion in mixing drinks for guests and the ability to create my own signature cocktails. Tell us about your recent experience at a bartending competition. I have won company bartending competitions before and I wanted to push myself more by

becoming a contender in the ASEAN National Bartending Championship. It was a challenge for me to balance my time between rehearsing and working at Manila House. We were asked to choose an inspiration for our drink and I though of my very own love story. It was a mix of different shades of red and I played with tequila, bitters, citrus and almond syrup while using red roses for my decorations. It was a tough competition and I am proud to say that out of hundreds who auditioned, I was part of the 16 contenders. It is definitely one of the best highlights of my bartending life! What is your dream cocktail? For me, there is no such thing as my own “dream cocktail”. But I’ll make it a point to my guests that every time I create a cocktail it will be their “dream cocktail”.

Of Flight and Faith "It's not a travelling book per se," says Founding Member Gianna Montinola, who took this book with her on a recent trip to Europe. "But it's about journeys."

T

raveling Mercies: Some Thoughts on Faith is the third autobiographical nonfiction tome by novelist Anne Lamott, featuring “brutally honest, sometimes funny vignettes about affirming faith and community in the midst of drug-induced angst,” according to Kirkus Review. Written with her customary wit and candor, this memoir is more spiritual than religious: “Like many in her boomer generation, Lamott doesn’t hold much truck with churches but has found a meaningful congregation all the same. It is a small, interracial community which lovingly incorporates pariah elements. Lamott circuitously chronicles finding the church (for months, she stayed only for the music, leaving before the sermon) just as she approached a crossroads in her life, finally admitting her alcoholism and other addictions, and starting out on the long road to sobriety (these chapters are among the book’s most chilling, along with her struggles to overcome body-loathing and bulimia). When she was on the verge of becoming a single mom in the late 1980s, the church truly came through for her, with members slipping ten- and twenty-dollar bills into her pockets after Sunday services. Lamott remains an active participant, demanding that her son, Sam, attend church with her most weeks. “I make him because I can,” she explains. “I outweigh him by nearly seventy-five pounds.” Lamott also takes refuge in a wide assortment of friends, many of whom have to deal with life-threatening illnesses as the narrative moves along. In the face of these tragedies, Lamott is refreshingly silent about questions of theodicy, choosing instead just to be there for people in need. Friendship, she claims, is the best salve for anyone’s pain, anyhow. She should know; she’s obviously been through a lot of it. Still, nothing here is self-indulgent. An anguishing account that also heals.” TRAVELING MERCIES: Some Thoughts on Faith by Anne Lamott Pantheon Available on Amazon.com

The Secret Life of Overseas Domestic Workers The touching documentary that has been sweeping up awards at various film festivals here and abroad had a special screening at the Intramuros Ballroom last month

With a minimum monthly salary of $500 in Hong Kong, Filipino workers like Rudielyn, Mylyn, Hazel, Cherrie, Leo (film subjects) and thousands others have become the breadwinners of their big families in the Philippines. To the rest of the world, they are contemporary slaves. These women come from decent families - some have even earned college degrees from decent universities. Most of them are independent thinkers. Unfortunately the hard life in the Philippines has forced them to leave in order to be able to give back home.

Like a fairy tale, their wish to taste a day of happiness would cost them some bittersweet consequences. The film’s director, Baby Ruth Villarama held a brief question-and-answer session after the screening, and presented a surprise guest – Mylyn Jacobo – whose poignant tale was one of the movie’s main narratives. Jacobo relayed how her employer’s death had been one of the biggest hurdles she faced during her tenure in Hong Kong. 13

"He was like a father to me. My family was far away, so her became a source of strength for me. He was the one comforting me, so for me, I felt like a lost a father.” Jacobo’s story may not have had a happy ending, but she is appreciative of the fact that her employer, a movie producer, was extremely kind and fair to her, and equally appreciative of the contribution of domestic helpers to the Hong Kong economy and way of life.
