In Bloom

In This Issue

One of the most distinctive features of Manila House, most would agree, is the abundance of foliage and flowers inside the Club. The greenery, in fact, is organic to the interiors - and exteriors, when you consider the plant-filled outdoor deck. The plant motif is repeated all throughout, in the wallpaper, the tablecloths, the porcelain, and even the ceiling. And it’s always integral to the set-up of our banqueting events.

On Show Beyond the Biennale

8

In the 15 months since we opened the Club, our ballroom, event spaces and private rooms have been transformed several times over into stunning worlds - glamorous, romantic, mysterious, tropical - with our bespoke approach to banqueting. We have welcomed Hollywood celebrities, international designers and chefs, a sprinkling of royalty, even the heir to one of the most enduring myths in modern history. It could be a private dinner for 12, or a formal reception for 150; whatever the occasion, we understand the need to personalize it and lift it from the ordinary so that it becomes memorable, special and exclusively yours. Just as we offer you new experiences through our banqueting events, we transport you, too, to different worlds through our Member events. This month we bring a bit of the idiosyncratic Biwako Biennale into Manila House, one of the most unusual biennales in the world, if only for its juxtaposition of contemporary art and centuries-old Edo architecture. And we bring you a flash of New York with the introduction of Bochic, the luxury jewellery brand launched by David Joseph, who will be in town, too, on May 3rd. And if you want to explore the world with a different passport, we could help make that happen for you, too. Come to the Global Citizenship Seminar hosted by Henley & Partners on May 23rd to find out more.

MEET TH E S TA FF

Get to Know: Eduardo Cajucom With Manila House since it first opened, Eds is a reassuring presence at all our banquets and Member events. Always calm and smiling, no logistical challenge ever seems to faze him What is your position at Manila House? I started as Banquet Captain. After a few months the company promoted me to Banquet Supervisor. My current position right now is Assistant Banquet Manager. What do you love best about your job? Being of service is what I love the most, seeing our members happy and satisfied drives me to go further and aim for a better service to be experienced by our Members and guests. When you’re in Banquets you will never be bored because even if you have been in this industry for so long you cannot foresee what’s really going to happen. Every event has its own uniqueness; sometimes it really squeezes out the creativity inside you. That’s how challenging it is. How did your previous work experience prepare you for this job? In my previous work I had different managers almost every year with different perspectives and it drove me crazy, but there’s nothing I could do, so I took it as a gift instead. It always gave me a headache but it was all worth it, I learned to become more capable in handling people and handling difficult decisions. They all contribute to who I am at work and even in my personal life.

How do you handle difficult Members and guests? You just have to open your ears and listen to them very carefully, being sensitive is also the key. Make sure every detail of their request is being noted. And always make sure they will feel that they are being taking care of. Profiling also helps a lot. What would you consider the highlight of your career at Manila House so far? One of the highlights is when I became Assistant Banquet Manager. It’s really an achievement for me. The company trusted me to run the Banquet operations, and it’s really challenging because, as I said, every event has its own uniqueness and our approach is very bespoke. Every day has new challenges, every day brings something new to learn. What do you like to do on your days off? Watching movies is my favorite thing to do on my day off, it gives a sort of peace of mind to me and is a time-killer also. And of course a good long sleep helps me prepare for the next week to come.

Three generations of the growing Lagdameo family

You have a large family. Did you and Tonet plan to have so many children? We have always said that all our children are God’s gift to us, and from the start, we agreed that we would have as many children as God would give us.

Most of your kids are grown and have families of their own. If there’s one piece of advice you would give them as a mother what would it be? Remember always that all children are different – no two persons are alike – even identical twins are individually different. “Spare the rod and spoil the child” is still a very apt saying, but the rod referred to can be a figurative rod, so a system of rewards and punishment is still a very effective way of raising children, while all the time that you emphasize your love and affection for them.

How do you manage as a working mother with all your kids spanning different ages? Do you ever forget their names? Fortunately for us, the kids came in two batches, so to speak! Thus, especially when we were living in the States, the older children would help me in looking after their younger siblings and all the children had their assigned tasks and schedule as far as the household was concerned.

Are you more indulgent as a mother or a grandmother? I try to balance both being an indulgent mother and grandmother.

What have been your most rewarding moments as a mother? Seeing the children growing up and succeeding in their respective fields, and also in raising their own children.

Beyond the Biennale A unique artistic partnership between Japan and the Philippines comes to fruition this May at Manila House

emblematic of classical Japanese architecture as exhibition spaces, the Biwako Biennale aims to stop this process of demolition.

he Biwako Biennale, now on its eighth edition, is one of Japan’s most prestigious and most idiosyncratic art exhibitions. Director and curator Yoko Nakata likes to think of “Beyond” as a pre-biennale event, showcasing artists who will be showing at the Biwako Biennale 2018 that will be held later this year in Shiga Prefecture, next to Kyoto in Japan. Biwako derives its name from Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan.

“We are honored to have such a great opportunity to highlight Japan-Philippine friendship through this exhibition here in Manila House,” says Nakata. Among the Filipio artists featured in this exclusive exhibition are Ryan Villamael, Randalf Dilla and Olivia d’Aboville, who join Takuma Noda, Yute Ikehara, Hiroyuki Yamada, Egashira Makoto, Taeko Yomoda, Noriko Fujii, Sayu Hasegawa, and Shimpei Kawai of Japan.

What makes the Biwako Biennale distinctive, apart from the stellar line-up of artists participating, is that the art, mostly conceptual in nature, is showcased in old Japanese buildings dating back from the Edo era (1603-1868) that escaped destruction after World War II. By using these old houses steeped in history and

to share insights, ask questions and generate ideas together. With a room of collaborative minds, everyone spoke of creative and disruptive ways to build on these existing unique ventures. Amor talked about CSR 2.0 on how corporates can work together with social enterprises in achieving common goals. The casual setting over some drinks created an engaging and enjoyable discussion across the table. It was also very open for everybody to share challenges for women entrepreneurs from starting a business to securing more investment. Tips and experiences were passed along as well as encouraging words to continue efforts in growing their businesses. As a platform, Monday Minds aims to showcase more innovators from different sectors and connect people from various backgrounds to learn from each other. As a term coined by author Frans Johansson, the "Medici effect" describes innovation that happens when disciplines and ideas intersect. We continue to spark such effect and promote disruptive innovation through diversity with our growing tribe of Monday Minds joining us every month.

ur Women's Month edition of Monday Minds brought together four incredible young Filipina innovators in an intimate roundtable of storytelling, exchanging ideas and making meaningful connections. Eileen Aparis is the CEO of INCLUDED, an organization based in San Francisco, California that brings a global network of onestop shop community centers for migrants living in city slums. Erika Pineda is the co-founder of Jeepneed, a social enterprise that turns kids into scientists by bringing innovative and interactive activities to schools nationwide. Audrey Tanco Uy is the CEO and co-founder of ServeHappy Jobs, a new generation recruitment platform leveraging on Social Media to get service professionals hired easily. Ava De Guzman is the cofounder of YConnecta, which aims to use technology to help improve job matching for underprivileged youth after completing NGO skills development programs. It was an impressive group of empowered women entrepreneurs whose initiatives empower others as well. After hearing their inspiring stories of innovation and impact, the rest of the group was led by Amor Maclang
