Kevin centers his novels around a fabulously rich Singaporean Chinese family whose seat of power was the legendary mansion called Tyersall Park. There are times when the novels read like over-the-top satire – do people really have koi ponds in their G650? – but then again, there is a certain kind of extravagance, coupled with eccentricity and a dollop of insecurity that can only be Asian. Living in Hong Kong before the handover, I recall parties that were so unreal in scale, personalities that were almost caricature-ish yet endearing in their theatrical ostentation, and fortunes that bordered on the obscene. Kevin, however, assures me that the money in China is far more obscene, and the spending habits far more extravagant, that he had to coin the term “China Rich” for this whole other level of wealthy. We’ll probably reserve our greatest affection for the third and last book in the series, Rich People Problems, because it is partly set in the Philippines and features some characters inspired by our very own Members. For those who haven’t figured out the who, what and where that Kevin writes about, maybe you can ask him yourself over cocktails on August 22nd.

MEET TH E S TA FF

Get to Know: Ching Aday Call her the “Banquet Queen” - she’s the lady who makes sure your functions run smoothly

What do you do for Manila House? In my first six months, I was at Banquet Operations executing the events handled by the sales team from choosing colors of the goblets and cutleries and creating different looks for the ballroom and function rooms to the event day, ensuring the banquet team provides the best service and exceeds member and guest satisfaction. Manila House really stands out with its Bespoke Banqueting. Recently, I was transferred to Banquet Sales where the fun part of event planning starts. How do your previous work experiences complement your current job? My previous experiences helped me grow and mature in the world of events. I started organizing kids' events when I was still in Singapore and it made me develop my passion for it. I also worked in a prestigious members club in the Philippines handling social and

corporate events. I can say that every event has its own personality and beauty that I get to know and understand. Having those experiences helps me decide to pursue what I love to do. What would you consider the most memorable event you’ve coordinated to date at Manila House? To date, I can say that every event that we've had is memorable because we make sure that it's personal and bespoke. Thus, we're excited as Manila House grows. We do a variety of events but weddings, I think, I'd love the most. When you do get a day off, what do you like to do? Travel or Sleep. I’m a fan of traveling, even doing it solo. I love to spend my day off with my family or sleep all day!

We have a selection of fidget spinners, crayons and coloring books to keep young children entertained and occupied when they are in the Club on the weekends. In the next months we will be adding more games and activities tailored to children. We would like to remind Members that these items are the property of Manila House and should be returned to the Club after use.

We believe that the way we dress reflects our own individuality and we respect Members' choice of how to dress. We do ask Members to be respectful of the occasion and time of day and to dress appropriately. At no time should Members and Guests wear flip flops.

Founding Members enjoy the privilege of bringing up to three (3) bottles of their own wines, with corkage fees waived, to Manila House as long as they are not available at the Club and they are consumed that same day.

No events or banqueting queries will be entertained by the Club without the proper prior endorsement of a Member.

During the week, we ask Members and their Guests not to wear shorts or vests since many might be wearing office attire. The senior citizen discount, however, is not applicable to private events in which a set menu has been pre-arranged. Again, this is in accordance with standard practice. 5

Members are not allowed to bring spirits from outside the Club. Please note that the waived corkage and outside wine allowance applies only to the hosting Member of private events, regardless of the number of Members present at the event.

Asian Persuasion W O RD S BY BAMBI N A O L I VARE S PH O T O G RAPH BY ST E PH E N G U T I E RRE Z

Crazy Rich Asians, Kevin Kwan's bestselling breezy comedy of manners about the inter-generational dynamics of a mega-wealthy clan set in Singapore, Hong Kong, London, New York and Paris introduced a whole new level of rich: crazy rich, extravagance on an Asian scale. With a touch of insanity.

P

ublished in 2013, the book was an irresistible cocktail, frothy, biting, and often hilarious, that blended social climbing, family secrets and financial sleights-of-hand with high fashion, true but troubled love, lingering traditions and money, amassed, spent and flaunted the “aristocratic” Asian way. The Singapore-born, New York-based Kwan came out with a sequel in 2015, China Rich Girlfriend, which continues the saga of the extended Young, Shang, T’sien and Leong clan - and introduces a whole new dimension: mainland China. Because what could be more over-the-top than Crazy Rich? China Rich, of course. Early last year as Kevin was completing his latest novel, we had a quick catch-up. In both books, you kind of stratify, in a way, the different kinds of Chinese all over the world. The ones from the US, who may have been from the mainland, are so different from the current crop of mainlanders. Why was it important to make that distinction? I think I really wanted to confound the

rights become different, the signifies become different, the clubs become more and more private… It’s all a way for the old money to protect themselves.

stereotypes that people have of Asia, especially in the West. They sort of lump Asians into one huge category, but as you know, there’s such a diversity of countries and cultures. And even within specific countries, within Singapore for instance, how many different racial groups are there? So I really wanted to show that Asia is comprised of so many different countries and a lot of times, there are these rivalries of snobbery that happen. Like Singaporeans think they’re superior to Hong Kong people, who in turn feel superior to the Taiwanese. Everyone looks down on the Vietnamese… things like that I wanted to reveal all the other inherent snobberies that exist within this world of the overseas Chinese particularly.

In one significant scene, you had Astrid, everyone’s favourite fashion plate, wearing Zara stylishly but nonchalantly while everyone wondered what new and exclusive designer she’d chosen to patronize. So there’s also that kind if confidence old money can pull off. Exactly. And oftentimes, when you go to functions, these big galas and events in Singapore and Hong Kong, I notice that some of the people that are the wealthiest, most aristocratic families are the ones who are casually dressed, without much jewellery whatsoever, because they don’t have to. Because that in itself is its own snobbery.

This is a comedy of manners, after all. It looks at class systems, the comedy of what really happens when people decide to stratify themselves.

But isn’t that the story of money and society, in a way? That old money was new money once? Absolutely. The need to show off becomes less urgent. But also, they run out of money! As they become older, by nature of necessity they don’t want to be spending the way the

You used quite subtle ways of showing that, through the brands they would go for. Yes, and that’s becoming more and more subtle, I would say, as different groups become more and more affluent. The bragging 6

new money crowd is spending. And it’s always changing, decade by decade. There are always new players coming into the scene. You see that also in New York. The society people that were famous in the Eighties have all but disappeared; there’s a whole new crop. In your second book you explore rich, crazy rich and China rich. So what makes China so mind-bogglingly different in terms of wealth? It’s the scale of money. That’s what’s happening now. They are making more money more quickly than anyone else in history. Ten years ago, there was not a single billionaire in China. Last week, the Heron Wealth Report that there are 596 billionaires in China. So they’ve overtaken the US in number of dollar billionaires. And what about the children of this new China rich? Carlton Bao and Colette Bing in your second book – that’s just another level of spoiled. It is a whole new level of being spoiled, I have to say. Because oftentimes you have

these parents that have spent the last few years working. They haven’t really raised their children. They’ve been so busy building their empires that they’ve shipped their children off to boarding school or they’re being taken care of by their grandparents. So the one way to reward them and buy their love is to literally buy them things, from houses to jets to cars… it gets more ridiculous every year. So the drag races in Paris – those things happen? Oh yes, absolutely! Everything in the book – it’s not far-fetched, then? Not at all. If anything I had to tone things down just to keep it more believable! Puttin' on the Rich This month's Book Club pick has an Asian flavor and comes straight from the source: the author

W

hen the Duchess of Windsor reportedly said “You can never be too rich or too thin,” she probably had no inkling of the level of rich that Asians would one day reach and enjoy and flaunt. Honorary member and bestselling author Kevin Kwan called it “crazy rich” and encapsulated this incredulous but real lifestyle in all its extravagant, scheming glory in his trilogy of novels, Crazy Rich Asians, China Rich Girlfriend and the latest release, Rich People Problems. The movie version of Crazy Rich Asians, starring Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh and Gemma Chan, is in fact currently in production. Rich People Problems continues the adventures of a family riven by fortune, an ex-wife driven psychotic with jealousy, a battle royale fought through couture gown sabotage, and the heir to one of Asia’s greatest fortunes locked out of his inheritance.

The Philippines – and its high society denizens - makes more than a cameo in this sweeping novel that takes us from the elegantly appointed mansions of Manila to the secluded private islands in the Sulu Sea, from a kidnapping at Hong Kong’s most elite private school to a surprise marriage proposal at an Indian palace, caught on camera by the telephoto lenses of paparazzi, Kevin Kwan’s hilarious, gloriously wicked new novel reveals the long-buried secrets of Asia’s most privileged families and their rich people problems. Some of the richest people I know have security details that are practically invisible because they are experts at blending in with the crowd. And yet these people are trained to instantly kill an attacker. Just. Like. That.

While people pay PR people to get their photos in the paper, some of the richest people I know pay retainers to keep their names out of the papers. Because what for? They don’t need to be on anyone’s radars.

Some of the richest people I know don’t own designer clothes or shoes or bags. Because what for? They already own the malls that house the stores that sell these items. They already see them every day.

Some of the richest people I know do NOT have a battalion of bodyguards in dark glasses flanking them on all sides and flashing their weapons for to see, the way other not-so-rich people do, mainly to call attention to themselves.

Some of the richest people I know work very hard every day. Harder than any of the people who work for them. They get to the office before everyone else. And leave the office after everyone else. Every single day. That’s how they became some of the richest people I know. 9

A L L A BOARD Last May, British Education Matters, an educational consulting organization formed to help students across Asia successfully get into top British schools and universities, came to Manila House to discuss with Members and Guests the benefits of a British education. A representative of the British Council, Pierre Pecson, began the talk with a brief overview of the British school system, as well as other concerns such as student visas, which the British Embassy would process. Jet Atienza, daughter of Member Tess Acuzar, then spoke about her wonderful experiences while studying at Woldingham, one of the top all-girls boarding schools in the UK. Finally, Fay Dalby, founder of British Education Matters, provided an indepth look at the much-vaunted British education, addressing in particular the following questions:

Honor Roll A boarding school education is a rite of passage for the Crazy Rich Asians set, be it in Switzerland, the United States or the United Kingdom. There, their children are likely to rub shoulders with royalty, European aristocrats, the offspring of tycoons, oligarchs and the occasional dictator. And let’s face it, even a drug lord every now and then. All that and a first-rate education, too, often amidst idyllic grounds. Here are some of the schools preferred by the world’s elite.

The accumulation of wealth is one thing, but the key to remaining wealthy is making that wealth grow for you. Citi analysts offered this outlook. "We expect a moderate but broad based pickup in global growth as structural headwinds recede. However, while a recovery in investment activity and still low interest rates are likely to be supportive of growth, there are risks to the outlook."

The Multitasker: Ann Pamintuan She designs furniture, home accessories and jewellery. Now, the multi-awarded designer applies her versatile talents to a stunning exhibition of multimedia installations.

W

ith a design sensibility deeply rooted in respect for materials, confident shapes and clean lines, and highly influenced by an Asian modernist aesthetic, Ann Pamintuan belongs to a new wave of Filipino designers gaining worldwide recognition from Manila to New Tork, Frankfurt, Paris, Tokyo, and Milan. Pamintuan did not set out to be a designer. The self-studied artist-designer learned about composition, line, and design from ikebana lessons she took with her motherin-law. In her spare time, the housewife in Davao started embroidering clothes for her daughter. She then went into making belts and bags, which her sister sold in New York. Both pursuits, however, were simply hobbies. Pamintuan's serious work as an artist began with her experiment with roots, leaves, and flowers. She shaped these botanicals and gave them permanence by casting them in gold, silver, and copper. Without prior training or apprenticeship, she made her early works through trial and error, building and tearing down, learning and relearning. The fusion of organic materials and metal brought about her jewellery line. From jewellery, she ventured into vases and bowls, and naturally progressed to furniture and sculpture, for which she began to receive both local and international recognition. Today, Pamintuan is considered one of the pillars of the country's design industry. A pioneering member of the Movement 8 design alliance, she is the first Asian woman designer to be included in the prestigious International Design Yearbook (2002).

Wet & Weldon “It cleanses you both physically and metaphysically,” says Denise Weldon of the power of water, the subject of her series of black-and-white photographs currently on show in the Taft Room.

D

enise Weldon is a Manila-based photographer who has been living in Asia for over 40 years and the Philippines for nearly two decades. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art from Wheaton College in Norton, Massachusetts, with a major in fine arts: photography, and minors in art history and Spanish. She has been a board trustee of the Museum Foundation of the Philippines since 2009.

To be able to truly read a book, a work of art or indeed a person, we must wash away our biases, our preconceived notions, perhaps even our fears. “When I realized that water droplets contained shadows, I was excited to have learned something new.” Water is clear, and yet it reflects back to us what we want to see. It is see-through but everyone sees different levels of transparency, of light and shadow. It is clear, and yet it can hold all colors.

“I never really stop taking pictures. I like to call it foraging, and as that foraging happens, patterns, themes and ideas emerge. So ‘Water Spirit’ began with an inclination towards dots. Dots as design, as elements, as water, on glass and on surfaces. It became a game of connecting the dots. Then, after the dots came the awareness of reflection and the refraction. There was this moment as I was studying the drops of the water. I became cognizant that the drops of water aside from having reflections of the bigger picture in front of them, had shadows within them that were silhouettes of both the outlines of the drops and the reflection! It was a ‘coming forth’ moment of sorts. I saw that in something so small, there is something much grander, deeper and wise that documents and records everything.”

“Everything is reflective; everything is biographical,” Weldon concludes when focusing on what goes into creating images. Seeing that there can be great depth in a little droplet is indicative of Weldon’s own search for what lies beyond the obvious. She admits, “I am currently curious about what makes a memory? How do we make memories? It’s an ongoing curiosity. We capture them in so many ways today with the multitude of technology available to us but are not the moments fleeting, and for how long will they exist. The longer I reflect on this, I realized that we have to be deeply alive to create a memory, and for it to be etched in our memory bank. A lot of what constitutes memory is a combination of an emotional and sensory experience, and of being awake and present to that moment.”

In Tagalog, the word for “wet” and “read” is the same, though they are pronounced differently. There is a philosophical parallelism, if one takes the time to think about it.

Richard Paterson, the master distiller, continues to push the boundaries of the Dalmore creating some of the world’s most iconic expressions such as the Dalmore ‘62 which was featured in the movie, Kingsmen. To create this luxurious whisky, Richard always transfers the liquid from cask to cask. The transfer of the liquid takes time and increases cost, but Richard insists that this a crucial step and continues to set the Dalmore apart from its peers.

Richard’s three-step system to maturation combined with the exclusive sherry casks from Gonzalez Byass ensures the Dalmore's complex and full bodied flavor. The Dalmore remains the connoisseurs choice due to the availability of aged bottles and the use of European sherry oak from Gonzalez Byass. This oak is of the highest quality and gives our whiskies the sumptuous flavors of dried fruits and spice.
