O one will dare ask Mr. Salvador Panelo, the presidential spokesman, on the bombshell report from the antipoverty group Oxfam. Or get Mr. Panelo’s version on how that report applies in the SPECIkC CONTEXT OF THE 0HILIPPINES WHERE both poverty and economic inequality are of the intractable kind. TRUMP RETREATS, US GOVT REOPENS WASHINGTON, D.C.: President Donald Trump on Friday (Saturday in Manila) brought a temporary end to the longest government shutdown in US history, while dropping his previous insistence on immediate funding for wall construction along the Mexican border. The announcement in the White House Rose Garden on the bipartisan deal marked a retreat by Trump, suspending a row that paralyzed Washington, disrupted air travel, and left more than 800,000 fedERAL EMPLOYEES WITHOUT PAY FOR kVE WEEKS The top Democratic senator, Chuck Schumer, said he hoped Trump had “learned his lesson. The Senate and House of Representatives both passed the deal by unanimous consent Friday. The White House later CONkRMED 4RUMP HAD SIGNED IT INTO LAW Trump’s reversal came as the full weight OF THE SHUTDOWN INCLUDING THE kNANCIAL cost on struggling employees and the national economy, became clear, and as the president appeared outfoxed by his politi-
cal nemesis Nancy Pelosi, the Democratic speaker of the House of Representatives. But while Trump climbed down in agreeing to reopen government without kRST GETTING BILLION IN BORDER WALL funds, he still threatened to renew hostilities with a new shutdown, or a state of emergency, if there is no breakthrough on his pet project in the next three weeks. “Over the next 21 days, I expect that both Democrats and Republicans will operate in good faith, he said as he announced he would reopen the government. “If we don’t get a fair deal from Congress, the government either shuts down ON &EBRUARY TH AGAIN OR ) WILL USE THE powers afforded to me under the laws and Constitution of the United States to address this emergency, he warned. “We really have no choice but to build a powerful wall or steel barrier. S&P Global Ratings said the shutdown cost “is likely worse than what we had previously expected. Based on their analysis, “the US econ-
Improve tax collection, call off excise tax – JV SEN. Joseph Victor “JV Ejercito urged the country’s revenue collectING AGENCIES TO COLLECT TAXES EFkCIENTLY AND CORRECTLY IN ORDER TO HELP the government raise more funds, instead of implementing the second wave of fuel excise tax increases that took effect this month. At the same time, he urged the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Bureau of Customs to seriously and relentlessly run after big-time tax evaders and avoiders. “Instead of fuel excise tax increase, why not implement a nononsense campaign against big-time tax evaders and avoiders? It’s the government’s mandate to collect, it’s their [evaders] obligation to pay, under the law, Ejercito said in a statement. )N THE $EPARTMENT OF &INANCE AND THE ")2 INITIATED THE Run After Tax Evaders (RATE) Program, which mandated the BIR to investigate criminal violations of the National Internal Revenue Code of 1997 and assist in the prosecution of criminal cases that will generate the maximum deterrent effect, enhance voluntary COMPLIANCE AND PROMOTE PUBLIC CONkDENCE IN THE TAX SYSTEM )N THE ")2 !NNUAL 2EPORT A TOTAL OF 2!4% CASES WERE kLED with the Department of Justice, with the estimated tax liabilities amounting to P10.72 billion. 4HE OBJECTIVE TO PROSECUTE HIGH PROkLE TAX EVADERS IS YET TO BE realized, however. ceremony drew 400,000 pilgrims to hear the Pope at a park in Panama City. The World Youth Day committee said 110,000 people HAD OFkCIALLY REGISTERED FOR THE SIX DAY EVENT which ends on Sunday. In his evening homily, Francis returned to his theme of defending migrants during this visit to Central America, the hub for migrant caravans heading north through Mexico to the US border. The Church wanted to foster a culture “that welcomes, protects, promotes and integrates, that does not stigmatize, much less indulge in a senseless and irresponsible condemnation of every immigrant as a threat to society.

OMY LOST AT LEAST BILLION LARGER THAN THE BILLION THAT THE 7HITE (OUSE requested for the border wall, it said in a statement.
Shutdown pain Trump triggered the shutdown in December to pressure congressional Democrats to give him funding for the border wall. But the House Democrats calculated that voters would blame Trump for the ensuing chaos — and polls showed they were correct. Federal workers as varied as museum employees and US Coast Guard sailors were left without salaries. Even Secret Service agents guarding the White House have been working without pay. By Friday the shutdown impact was focused on airports, where enough federally employed security staff had called in sick to slow down overall operations. Air traffic controllers were working

‘VP camp using Marcos poll protest for publicity’ THE camp of former senator Ferdinand “Bongbong Marcos Jr. dismissed a SUPPLEMENTAL MANIFESTATION kLED BY THE camp of Vice President Maria Leonor “Leni Robredo before the Supreme Court, sitting as the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, on Wednesday. Vic Rodriguez, Marcos’ lawyer, said data emanating from Robredo’s camp “are fueled by their own political agendas. “Everything and anything that’s coming out of them now, it’s more political than legal. Robredo’s lawyer is running for the Senate. He’s using this issue for publicity because it’s really his game that is over, Rodriguez told The Manila Times. He was referring to the Vice President’s lead counsel Romulo Macalintal, who last week said that the “game is over for Marcos because the reappreciation of ballots from three provinces chosen by the former senator still showed Robredo’s lead over Marcos intact. Robredo won by 263,473 votes over Marcos during the 2016 elections. 4HE SUPPLEMENTAL MANIFESTATION kLED BY Robredo’s camp on Wednesday said Marcos
