Where do I begin...? Humming that from the movie "Love Story" I was looking to find inspiration for this month of Love. February immediately connotes love for lovers, but love cannot be confined to romantic bonds. Instead, I chose to find other descriptions for the dictionary's definition of love being that of deep, fond and tender feelings. Alright, with all the Valentine cards, balloons, flowers and other commercial expressions, I dug deeper and thought. How do folks from other countries celebrate Valentine's Day? Well, for a friend who was married to a Frenchman, she was dumbfounded when came that day for the first time when she realized he wasn't purposely ignoring that special day. He declared that they do not have such a holiday! Much to her chagrin of course. Funny how we assume that Filipinos celebrate Thanksgiving or the Fourth of July, not. Not in the Philippines anyway, it will be similar to think the huge assemblage of Sinulog in Cebu is a nationwide event, which it isn't. Back to our subject, Valentine's Day (I have to practically yank myself away from my meandering thoughts to focus on the specifics). First and foremost, who is St. Valentine? This space is limited to the historical or mythical context of the character (just Google it) so I move on. What makes it so exclusive to lovers and why cannot love be extended to include love for humanity in general and for individuals with whom we do not share a common bed? Questions galore! Am I trying to redefine this whole concept? Admittedly, I think it is only fair to concelebrate or co-celebrate because Christians consider December as Christmas month, but so do our brethren who eagerly anticipate Hanukah or Kwanzaa at year's end. And then comes the irony of love lost once the fiery passions die down, leaving embers when lovers part ways. For those who watch Family Feud, there was the question about when it is the worst time to break up a relationship, guess what the number one answer? Got it right - Valentine's Day. Ouch! It's akin to a last minute remorse on a wedding day when either bride or groom gets cold feet. The temporal nature of romantic love does have its price, however, if the ties bind without bondage, then we can safely say love is the most essential nature of our beings. In conclusion, I dare declare that Valentine's Day be a shared celebration between lovers of all kinds. Let's include among the romantic liaisons, the parentchild, pet owner-pet, champions and their causes, hobbyists and hobbies, ad infinitum... What's another dozen roses or kisses exchanged between each other one month of the year when in reality, just as some celebrate Christmas every day, we only stand to gain when love is in the air 24/7? To all the love and lovers in this blessed planet, Happy Hearts Day, make it a daily practice to celebrate Valentine's Day. Sonia D. Bermejo

How to tell if the designer bag is fake? Understand the difference between a knockoff and a genuine bag. Knowing the difference enables you to make an informed choice about the purchase of any bag. A genuine designer bag is made by the original well-known designer; it can also be made by a lessknown designer but the main focus is on high-end designers. The bag's logo, charms, attachments, etc., is all part of the original design down to the exact positioning and number of such features. Tags, signatures or marks stating the designer's name form an integral part of the bag's overall design and authenticity. Price is determined by what the consumer is prepared to pay for a designer label. A legal knockoff/imitation is "designerinspired" but not a direct copy. Provided such a bag does not claim to be the original designer's bag and does not attempt to use the trademarked symbols, logos, or features. In most cases, it can legally imitate the style and colors of an authentic designer bag while taking care of any defining features deviate in evident ways in order to avoid copyright. Although it may suggest the bag's similarities to the brand that it's inspired by, it won't claim to be an actual designer bag. Without close inspection, the additions can be easily mistaken for the real thing, sometimes causing you to spend too much on it in the belief of the original designer's bag. However, if you know what to look for, you should be able to spot the differences.
Illegal fake bags, put themselves across as being the genuine designer's bag, right down to the very last logo, tag, charms, etc. Fakes copy everything about the designer bag, and pass themselves off as the original brand with no attempt to distinguish themselves as look-alike. Prices for fakes can vary considerably from cheap to trying to sell the bag for higher amounts. It is illegal to make fake merchandise, and while buying it, doing so supports illegal activity. Be aware that the designer-inspired bags can carry the blessing of the original high-end designer where adequate compensation has been paid and contracts exchanged, allowing for lower-end knockoffs in chain retailers, etc. Usually the store will proudly say something along the lines of "as licensed by X brand for our store".
Be store wise. The best place to purchase a designer bag is to go to a renowned store to for designer bags. Suitable stores include stores that carry the same name as the brand and quality department or boutique stores. The staff should be knowledgeable when questioned about the pedigree, quality, and guarantees concerning the bag. Assume that any designer bag being sold at a flea market or street vendor is suspect. Designer labels do not authorize street vendors to sell designer bags or purses. It would be a rare occasional find to have a cheap designer bag being thrown out at a flea market; it's possible but improbable. Know all you can about designer bags if you're purchasing from estate sales, thrift stores, online auction sites, etc. Apply the following steps to any purchases of designer bags made in such places. Ask trusted fashionistas you know where they purchase their designer bags from. They'll be wise to the good stores. Be realistic about the price. Designer bags cost a lot of money because they are well crafted and they're status symbols. If the price is too good to be true, then it is, and the bag's a fake. If you do buy legal knockoffs, be sure you don't pay much and double check the quality. Ask the vendor if the bag is real, a copy, or a fake. Judge for yourself the ring of authenticity from the answer; keep your emotions in check and your common sense at the forefront. Sellers who avoid answering questions or are evasive have something to hide. Ask if you can return it if it's faulty or fake. Naturally, don't expect street vendors to agree to this! Ask if there are any certificates of authenticity accompanying the bag. Know the signs of a fake or knockoff bag. There are numerous signs that can point to a bag's lack of authenticity: The stitching. Look closely at the stitching of the bag. Sloppy, slanted, and uneven stitching is a sign of a poorly made, and therefore, a fake bag. Designer bags will always have quality stitching because it is part of the designer's reputation to produce a quality item. Check the tags or labels. Check the inside tags – are they stamped into leather or hand-stitched? An obvious fake will have no name on the inside tag. Check outside tags as well because many designers include authenticity labels on the outside of the bag. Check the material. If it's leather, it should smell like leather. If it's supposed to be durable canvas, it should be strong and well stitched. The material can tell you a lot about the bag's quality. If the real bag normally has a pattern inside, then the fake bags with mainly have just one colour throughout the inside.

ove is in the air and everywhere you
turn around is a reminder of the next big thing to celebrate. In the weeks that precedes February 14th, we are bombarded with heavy promotions of cupid hearts, chocolate boxes, outrageously over-priced floral bouquets, restaurant reservations, heart-melting cards and jewelry promotions. Couples, singles and hopefuls flock to purchase and plan to make sure that their February 14th is picture perfect. In this month‘s column, I‘m going to take you on a journey of a different type of love, a love that goes beyond the ideal ―romance‖, beyond the commercialized perfect date night and outside the boundaries of expectations. This is about a love beyond borders fueled by the passion to make a difference in the lives that matter. A purpose ingrained so deep in their hearts that depicts what Love is and quite frankly, real life super-heroes, knight- in- shining armors dressed in regular day clothes masking the capes they each wear, day in and day out.
Meet Alan Niewald, President and CoFounder of Kilos Bayanihan, a non-profit organization, specializing in helping children and families in need in the Philippines. What‘s beautifully unique about his journey, is that he fell in love with the country‘s culture and people after one visit. His eyes were further opened to the reality of poverty, of families in need, and heartbreaking reality of street children, orphans and impoverish conditions that existed everyday. He saw beyond the tourist trappings and discovered a heart that ignited a purpose of connecting, helping and loving beyond geographical borders. What had started as a simple outreach in 2009 between two parties gave birth to a full 501c organization that continues to impact lives. Every year, Alan makes it a point to travel from Las Vegas to different townships in the Philippines and distribute goods, gifts, basic necessities and most of all spread hope to let the children know that they are loved, and not forgotten. His ―love‖ is self-sacrificial. He proactively campaigns for these children. Alan has earned the title ―ninong (god-father)‖ from
the little ones. Alan considers them and Kilos Bayanihan his family. He has made it his life priority to continue to cross the continents to show the loveless just how much love there is in the world for them, uncontained by the seas that separate them from where his heart belongs. The second super-secret hero is the founder of the Mobile Soup Kitchen for Kids, Reynold De Vera, a Manila local, who was quick to volunteer with a group of first response teams to get to ground zero after Typhoon Haiyan devastated different regions of the Philippines in 2013. He quickly realized that the need was so vast that he decided to go back on his own, gathering whomever was willing to help out and set foot right in the middle of the streets and start cooking what they can gather, to feed those who were in dire need. This so called ―Soup Kitchen‖ was as bare bones as it gets with nothing but a couple of soup ―calderos‖ (stock pots), firewood and kerosene to go with, he set out to feed dozens that grew into thousands with nothing short of a miracle movement that he made Continue on Page 13
2016 SINULOG FESTIVAL Still the grandest By ERNEST GONZAGA
Manila‘s ostentatious and brazen events and parties usually takes a break every January simply because of the concluded holiday revelries. Metro Manille folks mostly spend spell this time either going out of the country, out of town and attend to some religious endeavors. The month of January centered on the Feast of Sto Nino, a grand fiesta, that focuses on the image of the Child Jesus. The Sinulog, one of grandest and most colorful religious festivals honoring the Child Jesus, at the Queen City of the South – Cebu City, culminating on the feast of the Sto. Niño – with a Mardi gras parade and festive street dancing to the beat of gongs and drums along the city‘s major streets. Millions of local and foreign tourists and devotees flocked to Cebu City to pay homage to the Child Jesus and join in the fun and revelry. Sinulog is celebrated simultaneously with Lakbayaw in Tondo, Buling-Buling in Pandacan, Ati-Atihan in Aklan, and Dinagyang in Iloilo City, among other crowd-drawing Sto. Nino feasts. Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama opened this year‘s grand parade. Eucharistic celebration officiated by Msgr. Roberto ―Boy‖ Alesna held at the grandstand stage of the Cebu City Sports Center. Mayor Rama, was joined on stage by Cebu Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale and Vice Mayor Edgar Labella. A total of 44 dance contingents competed at the Sinulog Grand Parade, the highlight of week-long festivities celebrating the feast of the Holy Child Jesus.
The word sinulog comes from sulog meaning ―river current,‖ as the dance‘s forward-backward movement ids likened to the flow of a river. Sto. Niño de Cebu is carried in the procession and parade in thanksgiving for bountiful harvest and to relive history. Sinulog is rich in pomp and pageantry. A dawn fluvial procession led by the flower – and candle-bedecked boat carries the image from Mandaue City to Basilica Minore del Santo Niño in Cebu City, where the first baptism and Cebu‘s Christianization are re-enacted. An evening procession was held. An all-day all-night grand parade of elaborately dressed Sto. Niño images and colorfully-attired street dancers, a Walk with Jesus, trade fair, art exhibit, Sinulog sa Kabataan at sports center, a cultural show, concert, coronation rites for Ms. Cebu 2016 and Sinulog Festival Queen 2016, pyrospectacular, and a photo contest are other activities. Sinulog was the native dance to worship anitos during pre-Spanish times. In 1521, Portuguese navigator Ferdinand Magellan gave Hara Amihan (renamed Queen Juana), wife of Rajah Humabon, and an image of the Child Jesus as baptismal gift. The baptism rite was the basis for Sinulog dance, showing the queen embracing the Sto. Niño and using it to bless the people. After Magellan died, his men returned to Spain. The explorer Miguel Lopez de Legazpi arrived in Cebu in 1565 and destroyed the village. Legazpi‘s soldier, Juan Camus, found a wooden box containing the Sto. Niño image in a burning hut. Cebuanos continued dancing the Sinulog to worship the Sto. Niño. Augustinian friars proclaimed it miraculous and built a church on the site where it was found. hat is an entrepreneur? One might
think of super tech geniuses like Elon Musk, Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg. At my school, Babson College, entrepreneurship has many definitions, but the overarching thought is creating social and economic value through the optimal blend of the correct leadership and resources. And most of all- failing. Trying an idea, failing, and moving forward. If one looks at the pathways of most successful entrepreneurs, they would see many failed business ideas before the right opportunity materialized in front of them. My name is Krystal Leonardo von Seyfried and this is my (incomplete) entrepreneurship story. First, a little bit about me. I am a half Filipina, half German American from the Koreatown neighborhood of Los Angeles. Like most FilipinoAmericans, I've gone to private Catholic schools my whole life. Let's go back half a decade to 2011. I was a sophomore in high school attending Immaculate Heart High School, one of the most prestigious all girls schools in the Los Angeles area. Pretty good, right? On the surface, yes, but crack a little bit underneath and it wasn't so pretty. I had very few friends and was struggling to keep my grades up through lack of drive. Then, like a slap in the face - I got expelled from the school for a Facebook post about a teacher. My life was over, or so I thought. Where would I go to high school now? Would I even make it to college? This is where I tell you what happened between me being kicked out of high school to being a published model and a student at the #1 college of entrepreneurship in America. After getting expelled I was a mess. It took a lot to get out of the mess, and a change of pace definitely helped. I went on to attend the Pilgrim School, a co-educational high school with an attached middle and elementary school. The start was rocky, but the right mix of helpful students and great teachers got me slowly back on my feet. By the end of my first year there, I had won the election for Associated Student Body president as a new student. I was also crowned homecoming queen and got onto the headmaster's list, but the real crowning achievement of my time at that school was getting admitted to Babson College. After all this, my expulsion actually worked out in my favor. I knew that it would be extremely hard to get anywhere decent in terms of college. My GPA at Pilgrim was sky high, but my GPA from Immaculate Heart made my cumulative drop like a stone. Not to mention getting expelled from high school. It was a long shot and I was told by many to not even try at my dream school, but I went for it. I didn't know this at the time, but entrepreneurs are known to attempt projects even if there is a huge risk of failure. Many of my peers drop out of school halfway through to pursue their entrepreneurial goals.I guess Babson noticed this in me because it paid off, and obviously I got in.
Babson was grueling. I wasn't ready. For the first time in my life, I got a D. When I had my first summer to go back home to LA, I took it with open arms. I was so burned out from taking summer classes, one year and essentially not having a summer between freshman and sophomore year. I wanted to do something that didn't involve income statements or Microsoft Excel. So while my peers were working their dream internships on Wall Street, I decided to join a pageant. Going to a business school, it is a pretty strange choice to spend my summer entering junior year, joining a pageant rather than taking a huge internship. But I didn't care about what my peers were saying and just followed my heart. I didn't win. I wasn't expecting to win, because I was officially barred me from placing in the top ten as well as Best in Evening Gown and Swimsuit. But I didn't care. I took the opportunity to get healthy and build on myself. And I did. The pageant was tough and grueling. but thanks to my personal trainer, mentor and family, I was stronger than I ever was, ready to tackle the next phase of my life. I came out of the pageant a loser in the eyes of most but to me, I won everything I needed and more. Here I am now. I was named one of the top ten most beautiful Filipinas of 2015 and I've finished my first semester back at Babson stronger than ever. I've started sending autographs out to fans, and I have several modeling jobs under my belt, not including my upcoming job with Flaunt Magazine and this cover story. What's next for me? More winning, but definitely more losses. More expulsions, more disparaging comments, and more controversy. But also more big photoshoots, more self improvement and more opportunities. This is the heart of the entrepreneurial experience and I'm glad that I got a taste of it through my life already. Hopefully, I'll be prepared when I'm ready to launch the project I've been brainstorming for the past month. But even if not, I'll take a failure with open arms, knowing something even brighter is coming in my future.

hen it comes to looking for love, how do Filipinos in
London go about it? What are the rules of dating for the Filipino diaspora? Filipino women from different generations and backgrounds share their intimate, heartwarming and raw experiences on their search to find a partner in a new country. Velly, London Hi Velly, what brought you to the UK? I worked in a travel agency in the Philippines and first came to the UK in 1980 when I accompanied rich people on a tour. My godmother who works as a nurse in London then sponsored me. Were you married? Yes, though my husband was working in Saudi Arabia. Whilst applying for him to come, I discovered that he was having an affair with the nanny who was looking after our son in the Philippines.
That must have been hard. It was so hard, we had been best friends since we were 11 and he was my only boyfriend. The respect was not there anymore and I decided I could not go back to him. How did you look for a partner in the UK? I didn‘t! I was always so sad as all my girlfriends had boyfriends and I felt very lonely. However, I soon began receiving lots of letters from men! My girlfriend had signed me up to a dating agency. How did you choose what man to go for? I was picky, I wanted a professional man and chose architects, engineers and accountants. I didn‘t want to go out with a driver or carpenter.

kay, folks. Ahh , there‘s … I have to
apologize.‖ My heart started pounding harder and what happened next was mere shock and jubilation. On the video monitor, I saw the bewildered look of Pia Wurtzbach. As Steve Harvey continued; ―the first runner up is… Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines!‖ Pandemonium. That would be the best description I could give as the events unfolded right before my very eyes at the Axis Theater in Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas. The booing and cheers were deafening and the rest is history. Well, not entirely, since the mistake made during the pageant landed on the front page and headlined across the continents like wildfire. Plus, the new Miss Universe still has a year to enjoy her reign and fulfill her duties. As a pageant fan, I have never thought that I could witness the crown being handed back to our country. 42 years is a long time and the Filipina beauty has evolved through the decades. I never screamed that much in my life and mind you, to yell ―PHILIPPINES‖ is a breath-taker - literally! But, nonetheless, doing such a thing and waving the Philippine flag made me proud to be Pinoy. A world class individual who is able to go head to head with anyone in the pursuit of excellence.
I had a glimpse of the girls during the technical rehearsal of the pageant. Most of them are dolled up in their heels and respective sashes . It was a sight to behold every time Pia sashayed her way to where our group was. There, she would have her mentors from Aces and Queens coach and correct her on her moves and projection on stage. I thought to myself, this girl knows how to project and she knows which camera to look at. Of course! She is an actress and a product of Star Circle! The pageant is known to be the pageant of pageants. Filipinos from all across the world, I mean the Universe, made their way to Las Vegas. Both straight and gay glammed themselves up for the night. I have never seen that many Filipinos under one roof cheering for the country‘s representative. It was heartwarming to know that we do unite after all. I am sure that this will not be the last time I will watch the Miss Universe pageant. After all, the adrenaline rush that I got from watching the show was so overwhelming. I know that the new batch of ladies will be more fierce and determined in making sure that the Philippines will still be regarded as a powerhouse of beauties. Crown or not, there is one thing that Pia Wurtzbach has made the world aware of being Filipina and that is being ―confidently beautiful with a heart.‖
GEM HINTS continued from Page 4 Check the logo. Logos are often a slip-up area for copies. They may have spelled the name slightly differently, such as Carter instead of Cartier. And, the more popular the "knocked off" bag, the greater the need to be careful because it's easy to be taken advantage of. When you look at the stitching on the sides and you see the "LV" it should be continued onto the other side of the bag and this also goes for the other symbols on the bag. And most knockoff Chanel bags have interlocking Os instead of Cs, which actually makes it legal to sell, but it is, of course, a fake. They snip it to make it look real when it comes out of a dust bag. Look for a serial number. This is a stamp inside that says the brand (it may not be in all bags). Often times the serial number is still fake, but will look different and be a different font. Check the lining. If the interior sounds like paper rubbing together, then it's not the real thing. A real designer bag will be lined, and often with leather. Again, check the stitching of the lining if relevant, and observe if it is double stitching (not always the case). Look for color variations. Although some variations will be blatant, others may be very subtle. Be sure to have a close inspection. Noticeable wear break-in. Although this is post-purchase, how your bag wears in can be a sign of its authenticity. For example, the leather on the handle, after a few weeks, should look like a well worn leather jacket does. It should have an "aged look". Stitching should stay intact and not begin to fray. Zipper handles that fall off early on indicate a fake. Check the hardware, if it does not look like authentic hardware, feels light, has rough edges, ect., it may be a fake. Check the zipper manufacturer, usually the underside of the zipper will have a logo. Many handbag manufacturers use the same high quality zipper manufacturer on all of their bags. Don't confuse a designer bag with making a purchase of value. With a designer bag, you're buying the label as much as the bag and it may not be to your budget's benefit unless money is not an issue. To Forgive and Forget: that is the question By Angel Tahimik
In Luke 17, Jesus tells His disciples to forgive when a brother turns and repents from his sins – even if he does ―seven times in a day and turns to you seven times.‖ Simply means that we are to forgive a repentant brother no matter how often he sincerely repents. The keyword here is, Repentance: it is comprehending the sin, confessing them and choosing to turn away from them and turning to God. If your spouse is truly repentant, you are to forgive him the way the Lord forgives (Ephesians 4:32).Real forgiveness takes place when real repentance is exercised; and when you forgive, you are making a conscious decision to treat the memory of the sin as a useless memory – not a “secret weapon” to use when you want to indict your spouse. When asking for forgiveness, God requires repentance (Acts 2:37;3:19). Simply saying, ―I‘m sorry‖ does not cut it. Biblical forgiveness involves knowing what to ask forgiveness for, why we need to, and to Whom we ultimately have sinned against. One has to understand that the committed sin was foremost,an offense to God, then to his/her spouse.

If I choose to forget, does that mean I have forgiven? orgive and Forget. We hear this phrase
countless times. It‘s the definitive advice offered by your best friend or your mom whenever you bring up your spouse‘s failures and misconduct. But what does it really mean when you say, ―Let‘s forgive and forget?‖ Does it mean you instantly get self-inflicted amnesia and just forget all about it? Since this month‘s issue talks about LOVE, let‘s deal with one of the most evaded ―issues‖ of the heart. Let‘s talk about Real forgiveness, shall we? One of the best – and also the most enlightening – lessons I‘ve learned from my husband‘s Biblical Counseling class (he is a sophomore at The Master‘s Seminary), is regarding the subject of forgiveness. It‘s the first time I heard that to ask forgiveness does not mean you just apologize for your mistakes – that doesn‘t mean you‘re not to say you‘re sorry when you are – it means that you are to ask forgiveness for sins you have committed against your spouse and ultimately, against God. Please note that we are talking about ―sins‖ and not just undeliberate mistakes that resulted in unintentional harm such as forgetting your anniversary or failure to take out the trash on a given day. As far as giving forgiveness is concerned, The Bible does not contain the expression, ―Forgive and forget.‖ It actually never commands us to forget a forgiven offense. Though we sometimes forget as a result of forgiveness, it is not to be interpreted as having ―truly forgiven‖ someone or something. Alternately, it also goes without saying that it if and when you remember a sin committed against you, do not mistake that ―brainwork‖ as you are withholding forgiveness – that just tells you your brain is functioning normally. What matters is what you do with that memory.
Just like what we talked about concerning biblical forgiveness; choosing to forget is not forgiving as God forgives. Apart from repentance, it is just a mental exercise. Rather than forgetting, what we should be doing, as biblical forgiveness demands, is to imitate God‘s forgiveness of those who believe in Him and repent (Mark 1:15; John 3:16); He buries their transgressions (Psalm 103:12) and no longer holds those sins against them (Isaiah 3:25). This is the kind of forgiveness God demands of His children (Matthew 6:14). It doesn‘t simply forget, but chooses to no longer bring up the sin against the person – upon granting forgiveness. When we are angry at our spouses, we may feel tempted to bring up past mistakes to try and justify ourselves or recall how we‘ve been wronged: this is not a reflection of genuine love. ―Love keeps no record of wrongs‖ (1 Corinthians 13:5).To keep no record of wrongs means that we don‘t mentally block the wrong,s but Instead, we let our husband or wife start on a clean slate when he/she is truly repentant and has asked for forgiveness. Granting them forgiveness involves a promise not to keep reminding them of what they have already confessed and repented from – no matter how tempting it may be. In the end the real issue is not whether or not you still remember the sins, but what you do with them. When you say you've forgiven your spouse and yet bring up his sins in the heat of your anger, you have not truly forgiven at all.Real forgiveness does not take into account grievances for future retaliation. It chooses to forget the evil and remember the good (cf. Hebrews 10:17; Isaiah 43:25). Whether you are to forgive and forget is not the real question. Do you forgive the way God forgives – that is the question.

The Philippines had won the Big Four International Pageants, Miss Universe (2015), Miss World (2013), Miss International (1964, 1970, 1979, 2005, 2013), Miss Earth (2008, 2014, 2015), making them the only Asian country to win all four titles. In the field of music and theatre musicals, Philippines was recognised in these fields because of the talents like Lea Salonga who received international awards, the Lawrence and Olivier Awards for her role in Miss Saigon as Kim. Rachelle Ann Go has won the Best Featured Actress award for her role as Gigi Van Tranh in Miss Saigon at the Broadway World UK/West End Awards and Best Supporting Actress in the 2015 WhatsOnStage Award. Charice Pempengco became an award winning International recording artist and was also seen on screen as Sunshine Corazon in Glee. Garidan and company were overwhelmed as they received a lot of entries from young artists around the world most especially from the Philippines. Judges namely, Mr. Jun Terra, Mrs. Myra Newman, Miss Saskia Steinberg and Miss Ela Hidalgo, had chosen 3 of the best Christmas Card Art Design. Christmas cards were printed with the designs chosen. The Christmas cards were sold and the proceeds were given to the winners. A Christmas Thanksgiving/Dinner Party was held at Grosvernor Casino Picadilly for the success of Garidan‘s Project last December 20. The said project will re-start again in April 2016 and Garidan will be accepting entries for the Christmas Card Design Competition for Filipino Children around the globe. Garidan is hoping that one day, this Filipino children will give pride to the Philippines in the field of arts. Who knows, one of these children will follow the footsteps of the world renowned artist, Ronald Ventura, who sold his art work for nearly P47 million pesos (HK$ 8,420,000) at Sothebys Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Paintings. Filipinos are world class performers and artists. However, there are still so many Filipino talents who are not being recognised due to some reasons like funding. We need someone like Vicky Garidan with an aspiration to support the Filipino children to unleash and develop their artistic skills. Hopefully, we can find from them, the next Felix Hidalgo, Juan Luna, Fernando Amorsolo or Jose Rizal in them; well renowned Filipino National Artists.
HOW BALESIN GOT IT’S NAME By Ben Azurel

uring the Spanish Regime, a group of Spaniards landed on this island and after being
welcomed by the early inhabitants, the Captain of the ship asked what was the name of the island. According to the islanders who passed the story, apparently, the Island Chieftain, thinking that the Spaniards were interested in doing business with them, responded saying ‗PABALIHIN‖ po ninyo kami at kami ay magtratabaho sa inyo. ― Give as some cash advances and we will work for you‖. Unable to understand what the Chieftain had said, the Spaniards decided to depart and continued their sea travel. While at sea, The Spanish Captain thought about what the Chieftain had said and all he could remember was the first word and assumed that the name of the island was ‗PABALIHIN‘ . The name spread throughout the region and was only shortened to ‗BALIHIN‘ when Father Palejo, a Catholic priest from Mauban, Quezon, bought the Island. In the early 50‘s after World War II, the island was sold to a certain Werner P. Schetileg, an American German businessman from San Pablo City, Laguna. He added the title Hacienda before Balihin to give a unique distinction and for people to recognize the island as his own. After his death during the early 60‘s, his only daughter decided to sell the island to Ysmael Steel Company at less than half a million pesos. After managing the island for a year, the company decied to sell the Island.
The late Edgardo Lopez Tordesillas & Co. purchased the Island and formed the company, ―Balesin Corporation‖ with its head office at Vicente Madrigal Bldg. Ayala Ave. Makati City. It was during this time that Balihin was changed to Balesin. And Balesin was categorized as a world Class Island Resort with the name Balesin Island Country Club. It was used to carry a sun logo with the tag line: Balesin… your Island Paradise in the Pacific. Currently, Balesin Island Club - the high-end property is a joint venture between Philippine developer Alphaland and Roberto Ongpin. Ongpin, who was educated at Harvard University‘s Master of Business Administration program, also serves as the chairman of Balesin Island. Lover's Day trip is towards the best way to a man's heart, his stomach. Not that I mean to exclude the men, it works both ways so here's to both genders. My favorites are not necessarily mandatory nor chronological in order. Let's start with places to dine (and in some places, wine) with your significant other. I am not a paid endorsement so you may go on a treasure hunt online to find more information on these places to grab some grub. CafĂŠ O' Lei stands out as the place for both locals and visitors to find an array of delightful platters, among which is that lunch special that comes with their signature Caesar's salad. It may be Ono (that's a fish for those who are curious), fresh catch of the day or chicken, beef priced so right it's a reason this restaurant has been frequented by the Kamaaina even during the slow season. The braised short ribs at dinner will make your date swoon, unless he or she is vegan/vegetarian. It has other locations on island successfully owned and operated by husband and wife tandem, Mike and Dana. Below the same strip mall is Da Kitchen. Yes, Da is how they spell "the" in pidgin so get over it. Wowing my palate is the Loco Moco smothered in mushroom gravy. Listen up though, if you are not a big eater, the lunch plates are good for two. And their spaghetti, yes! For a Hawaiian diner, who would believe they have the best in our opinion (credits to my other half). Prices are happily reasonable, so even on a thin budget, you get more than your money's worth. Pizza Madness may drive you crazy, no pun intended. This haven for pizza lovers is a stand out among others which have come and gone. That is the name of the game in Maui, like it or not. The island will either embrace you or, (sorry for the term, but it's how it's put here) spit you out. Not with the consistent quality of fresh, on the site prepared ingredients which includes their pizza topping of Italian sausage lovingly hand made by Kirk the owner. It has a moderate priced sizes and if like me, you like thin crust, they will oblige to make it to order. It is family friendly, so leave your public display of affection to a minimum.
Bully's apart from the above dining places located in South Maui is a nice surprise located along the desolate back road to Hana. (yes, there is an alternate route aside from that world famous winding drive). The family run ranch provides one of the sons 100% all grass fed beef. It is not your typical burger, nor does it have a drive thru. The juicy burgers they serve are to be savored on wooden benches with fabulous views. Your date need not dress to impress since I personally met a young deer who was fostered by a local when it lost its parents. Now that's roughing it, and Bully's is such an apropos name for this gem of a burger joint. La Provence is in Upcountry, meaning you drive up into countryside Kula. The French cuisine is unmatched yet unpretentious. Dining al fresco makes for a totally refreshing experience. I usually order the salmon with spinach in a crepe but make space for the utterly decadent homemade spread of desserts the French owner prepares daily, no day old bread here for sure. The jacarandas along the way during bloom season adds to the heavenly drive to this culinary destination. Now that you are both sufficiently fueled up, burn those calories together outdoors. Among some of the popular activities we enjoy are both relaxing and exhilarating. Helicopter rides are breathtaking especially over the mountains after it rains. I was fortunate to catch the Wall of Tears on one of my trips over the West Maui mountains. Why a wall of tears one may ask? Because there are so many waterfalls after the drenching I even lost count. The only way to see this beauty is from the air as there are no hiking paths nor roads in this untamed wilderness of the rain forest. Kipahulu is our numero uno outdoor adventure for camping. If you desire a total getaway from the crowds, set up your tent and relish the experience of the outdoors. Just a short hike will take you to the Oheo gulch, a world renowned gathering place with waterfalls and pools. Wading through the waters, it gives one a feeling of oneness with nature and the fresh air is the antithesis to the smog of cosmopolitan living. Healing waters is what we consider these, but be cautious, flash floods do occur and it's best to be safe than sorry when exploring nature.
Waimoku Falls is found at the end of a hike through the Bamboo forest. Walking from the Oheo Gulch, the hike is nothing short of magical. As we walk through the canopy of bamboo (not trees, bamboo is from the grass family) the rustling sounds like musical whistling, very soothing to the soul.
Maui’s Ali'i Lavander Farms And a hug or two as we pause along the way is very connecting. The falls are worth the hike, take a picnic bag and amidst the rush of the water simply zone out from the hustle and bustle of the rat race. Some venture to take a shower (no soap please) under the flowing water, and emerge renewed by its healthful energy. Zipline over the canopy of eucalyptus trees and breathe in the wondrous scent as you check out your Upcountry options. Can't seem to have enough of this heart racing adventure and the eucalyptus filled air makes it all the more enticing. Ali'i Lavender farms is just a drive up the road and there we always find solace walking amidst the many types of lavender grown in the hilly slopes. There is a theme shop which offers an array of lavender products. From lotions to teas, sachet bouquets and lavender infused salad dressing, you and your beloved can restore your senses long after the visit every time you use the goodies. They make for perfect gifts as well, so think future in-laws in case you are contemplating marriage. Haleakala volcano is dormant and the drive will definitely be worth your while alone with each other. We have witnessed a sunset wedding by the Observatory and the pictures of the couple against the backdrop was ethereal. A momentous life event not to be forgotten I am sure, I can still see the scene in the back of my mind. It's way up high over the clouds so take your leisurely time when trekking and don't lose your breath in the literal sense because of the elevation. There is a bird sanctuary and a campsite by the entrance to the park so if you have time, check out the beauty of chirping melodies or stay overnight at the campsite. Bring warm clothes and blankets to cozy up and cuddle at night. Molokini snorkeling is famous around the world. This protected habitat is a snorkeler's paradise. I have witnessed fish of all sizes and colors cavorting with turtles, but do not be disruptive as you enjoy the underwater world. No one is allowed on the island itself so keep yourselves occupied in the water or on
board, enjoy the meals some of the charter boats provide after a dip with the denizens of the sea. -Whale watching is left for the last, because I leave the best for last. Me and my partner never tire of watching these gentle giants from one of our first dates through the years, the spectacle never ceases to amaze. I had previously gone on a date with someone who graduated at Cambridge University (top University in the UK) but had asked him if that was in America as I‘d never heard of it before. He thought I was so stupid and I never heard from him again. Tell us more about this Oxford date! He used to work in the Middle East and had met lots of Filipino‘s there. He thought they were very kind and lovely people so when he went to London he approached the Filipino Embassy asking to meet women. They obviously turned him away. When we were dating, he asked me up for a ‗cup of coffee‘ on our third date. I said bluntly that ‗just because I‘m a divorcee, does not mean I‘m going to sleep with you!‘ He liked that I was very direct. What happened after? We got married. We have been married for over 20 years and have two daughters. My husband wanted me to be at home to raise the girls, but now they are older, I have my own business and I am very happy to work again. Myla, physiotherapist and actress with the Philippine Theatre, London Hi Myla, where did you meet your partner? I met my husband at college, we both studied physiotherapy in the Philippines. I had a crush on him, he was in the third year and I was in my first year. How did he ask you out? He noticed me as my name was on the Dean‘s list. Kristine, London You’re a Manila girl who moved to Australia when you were 14 and now based in London. Lots of travelling! Yes! In fact, I met my boyfriend on a bus whilst travelling around Palawan. He‘s half Filipino, half Swedish and was also in the Philippines. What was he doing there? He was interning at an advertising agency and then went travelling afterwards. Was it love at first sight? No! I thought he was going to steal our luggage! I went to swim when I arrived at the beach at Coron Island and asked him to look over my stuff, but had strong suspicions he was going to steal my bags!
How did it work, with him in Sweden and you in Australia? A lot of Skype! We also worked and saved money so that we could visit each other. I came to Europe in the summer and he came to Australia for Christmas. We continued a long distance relationship for two and a half years. Any tips for keeping a long distance relationship? Use technology: Skype, WhatsApp to keep in touch. Be patient and have a sense of humour. And then? I worked in marketing in Australia and then applied for jobs in London. I sold my clothes and furniture and moved here. As Christian wasn‘t over, we took turns flying to visit each other every other weekend. After six months he came to London as his company was opening a branch in the UK.

Well, maybe you need not look far for your Valentine‘s date this year because he is either snuggling up to you right now, or he is in the animal shelter or pet shop around the block, sitting and patiently waiting for you to show up. Reports suggest that one out of every five people would choose to be with their pet over their partner on Valentine‘s. Why? One might ask. 1. Your pup is easy to please You will not have to worry about what plans to make or where to book a reservation for the day. You do not have to choose an expensive bottle of vintage wine for the night to impress your dog. He will enjoy the day and will be more than glad to snuggle up to you and be around you all day. Do not be gutted that you did not buy him expensive roses. He does not mind and he or she will not even notice .Whichever movie you choose for the night, your pet will not argue, and you can count on them to watch it with you. 2. Your pet will always show up When it comes to your dog, you can always count on him to show up for your valentine‘s date. There are no surprises and no catches either. There is absolutely no chance he will be late. Are you worried about dinner? He will be there in plenty of time.
Actually, he will be there all day, just waiting for you to say so. When cooking him a dinner, do not fret. Party people know how to enjoy life Disco music was born in the late 60s but it became most popular during the mid to late 70s. These were the days of the Hustle, Donna Summer, Saturday Night Fever and so many more. This was also when discotheques became the in thing, with Studio 54 leading the charge. Disco was partying and this partying fever spilled over to the early 1980s saw the emergence of electronic dance music, house and new wave. As disco fell out of fashion in the decade‘s early years, genres such as post-disco, Italo disco and dance-pop became more popular. Rock music continued to enjoy a wide audience. Subgenres such as new wave. Likewise, the 80‘s saw the emergence of Trash Metal, a genre which started on the west coast of the United States, particularly in California. The 1980‘s are commonly remembered for an increase in the use of digital recording, associated with the usage of synthesizers, with synthpop music and other electronic genre featuring nontraditional instruments increasing in popularity. Also during this decade, several major electronic genres were develop including, electro, techno, house, freestyle and Eurodance rising in prominence during the 1990‘s and beyond. During this transition, the DJ became the focal point in many clubs and the preference for one DJ over the other led to many groups favoring the same DJ night after night. The end result? Well it was a nonstop party because the groups became friends and the DJs knew the crowd favorites. This is why to those who partied during this era, life was indeed one big party. The 80‘s-90‘s music became the focal for the birthday celebration the birthday of one of Manila‘s party girls, the beautiful and bubbly, Agile Zamora in a themed party called ―Party people know how to enjoy life‖ held recently at the Sage of the Makati Shangri-La Hotel in Makati City. She turned 48 years old. It was quite a match made in heaven that the party girl should be married to Disco King Wopsy Zamora. Wopsy earned this title after being the man behind the disco equipment of the disco era, lights, sounds and music. He was singularly responsible for equipping hundreds of discos both here and abroad. With such a power party couple hosting the celebration, it was to be expected that the Shangri-La would be overrun by the hundreds of Agile‘s friends and business associates of Wopsy who trooped in to celebrate what they knew would be the year‘s best party. And party they did with the guests really dancing the night away amidst endless servings of food and drinks. It was the epic party of 2016.
Even those who thought they left their dancing shoes on were drawn out of their seats by the awesome party music. This is after all the party of the Disco King for the Disco Queen and the crème dela crème of DJs were on hand to provide the groove. Friends grooved in and twirled to the music of the country‘s top DJs Boyet Almazan, Manolet ―DJ Papi‖ Santos, Elmer Dado with his group, Grupo Timbale. One of the highlights of the evening was when Wopsy, whose name is synonymous with the disco era and the main man of his own company, Amigo Anzia made a rare and limited performance just for his wife. Agile. Party people know how to enjoy life indeed, and partying is the ultimate fountain of youth. It seemed as though everyone was transported back in time that night and it seemed as though it was suddenly the 90s once again. The youthful beauty of the belle of the party shone the whole night, and was the ultimate proof that partying and enjoying life could turn back the hands of time. The message to all was clear, life is one big party, lets party on. Wishing my dear Agile all of the very best. Age is just an indication of how long we have been partying and having a blast on this planet. Cheers!

Guests were toured around the plant by the Vice President Tady Salaues and Michelle Vidal, daughter of the co-owner Mr. Freddy Vidal. Mr. Hernan Shaldo, partner and Executive Director were so accommodating and serving all the guests with ALKA VIDA. Sumptous lunch were served, and raffles and prizes were given out.

Genuine Love Romans 12:9 (ESV) 9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good.
These days the word ―love‖ is thrown around all over the place to describe a myriad of feelings and personal dispositions. It‘s a romantic feeling, a personal conviction, a political position or even a universal panacea. ―All we need is love‖ so goes the famous Beatle‘s song. This multiplicity of perspectives and definitions without a solid anchor to hinge on has made love, even love, the source of division, war, hurt and untold destruction. In the Bible we see a very definitive and clear concept of love. First of all, God is love. 1 John 4:16 (ESV) 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. Every personal, cultural and ideological perception of love is simply a taste, a slice, or a facet of what genuine love is. As humans, we hold the value and truth of love in an imperfect vessel. Everyone, no matter what color, race or creed in all of history carry the evidence in their heart of this echo of genuine love. It is proof that we are all created in the image of God. God is love. But man, the pinnacle of His creation, was broken through personal disobedience to a Holy God and could not therefore fully enjoy that love. We have it in bits and pieces throughout our lives. So God, in His love, sent His Son so we can be restored and once more be able to receive the fullness of His love.
The key to great relationships, whether husband and wife, family and friends, community and country, is to first of all be committed to genuine love – which is God. Let God in His Word define love for you. Don‘t let your feelings, or peer pressure, or personal selfishness define love for you. Trust God! He proved His love by sending His Son Jesus Christ to die on the cross so that we can join Him in His love. 1 John 4:9 (NIV) 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. With God as an anchor, love guides our expressions, feelings and convictions towards good and not evil. In this season of love, find your love in God!
