6 Aiza Diuco: White is Beautiful When your fate is written in the stars, the universe has a way of leading you to your destination no matter how many detours and stop-overs you make. It could take years to reach your destined place in life but God’s timing is always perfect.

As the result of 2 May 2019 elections amidst this turmoil, British-Filipina Councillor under Conservative Party, Cynthia Barker won the re-election in Hertsmere. She also won as Councillor and elected by her colleagues as Deputy Mayor of Hertsmere. That is astonishing. She convinced the voting public that she can serve them best regardless of their perception of political parties. Her fellow public servants bestowed upon her the trust to act in place of the Worshipful Mayor, the Mayor of the Borough of Hertsmere, Alan Plancey, in case he is not available

The Official Green Queen: Changing the meaning of the word influencer – Luissa Burton This is an age where the internet has taken over with the average user spending three hours and fifteen minutes on their mobile phone every day. It is important to me that my platform, voice and visibility is used in a positive way, to educate and inspire humanity on issues facing our planet. I have built up an online following across various media channels due to my pageant history and modelling career through which I have now created my “The Official Green Queen” brand, coining the motto “green is the new sexy”.

68 The Kat’s out of the Bag: The Nine Simultaneous Lives of KathArine Kramer Since its inception, those living in Tinseltown rapaciously pursue its offerings of fortune and/or notoriety abundant in its rich history. But what of it? What if one did captivate the world’s attention – would you spearhead social issues, speak out against injustice? Moreover, if you were born into a spotlighted family of Hollywood elite, what would you do to carry on the legacy? Imagine for a moment that your father was regarded as Hollywood’s most liberally outspoken filmmaker. Now imagine that you were named after the greatest, most tenacious female film star of Classic Cinema. How does one carry this weight on their shoulders and continue to perform for the public?

PUBLISHER’S NOTE

In the world of publishing, trends come and go as with most everything in various industries. Not to be carried away by the rush of the river, we at Manila Up! International Magazine are proud to announce that aside from our TV show which is into the finale of Season 2, our TV hosts are acquiring more exciting and informative segments. Even more exciting is that our sister publication EXQUISITE International magazine has gained popular acceptance among our readership. A solid testament that our branding is now established. Our more directed approach and strategic move towards bringing in more international flavor is gaining fast ground. From Asia, the US and Europe we have covered the who, where, what and when, both among the obscure and the highly visible. Talk about travel, celebrities, events, and most anything under the sun is our game changer. I must agree with our Editor, Edith Pendleton that one of our writers really stood up. EDITOR’S NOTE

Aiza Diuco who is our cover had her destiny mapped out for her. Also it seems, so did Cynthia Barker who is the first British-Filipina Councillor with the Conservative Party in the UK. One of the more relevant articles comes from “The Official Green Queen”, Luissa Burton. Her narrative reflects the increasing interest among her generation to protect the environment with her self-imposed title to titillate the masses attention. She surely got mine and the Publisher’s at that! Hollywood’s elite are now inching their way into our radars with Tinseltown talk about the Nine Simultaneous lives of Katharine Kramer as viewed from the lens of Kat’s out of the Bag. Segue to our very 2nd Miss Manila Up! Amanda Russo who is concurrently Miss Young Philippines USA 2019. Another promising youth who positions herself within the nonprofit organization she works with for the betterment of humanity in general. Winners all no doubt and the future are looking good. Our quintessential writer Becky Garcia In Other Worlds features the iconic Imelda Marcos as

she celebrates another milestone birthday. And while Jhoanna de Guzman ventures deeper into her world of feelings, another intriguing topic is about Stonehenge which can evoke feelings as energies merge with the mystery of its origins still uncovered. Like a rock herself, Riza Hontiveros forays into the world of Philippine politics, where many come and many go. Fe Koons is On the Beat with Riza Hontiveros the one whose impressive voice champions causes with courage and integrity. FASO (Fil-American Symphony Orchestra) is gaining ground with a magnificent performance at the grand Walt Disney Auditorium. The youth once again in the forefront, this time through the arts with voices singing in tandem in a memorable evening concert. As I go through our Table of Contents, it becomes a unique challenge to pick and choose as space is limited. What is not limited however is the wide range of subjects we have consolidated into one finished product. Take a peek and take your pick, surely you may have to venture into the adventures we present with keen interest into as many worlds beyond our own.

AIZA DIUCO:

White is Beautiful

W

hen your fate is written in the stars, the universe has a way of leading you to your destination no matter how many detours and stopovers you make. It could take years to reach your destined place in life but God’s timing is always perfect. Case in point is this month ‘s cover girl, attractive fashionista Aiza Diuco who thought she wanted to be a Diplomat as her chosen career. She was a consistent honor student at Miriam College all the way to High School and College where she graduated at the top of her class in Liberal Arts, majoring in International Studies. Diuco took her academic achievement a step higher with a Master’s Degree in Industrial Relations at UP Diliman where she was a university scholar. Instead of pursuing a career in foreign service, her life’s journey propelled her towards another direction. After testing the waters working for Sara Lee as Sales Training Supervisor, then as Executive Assistant to Commissioner Jose F. Erestain and Consultant to various firms in Organizational Development

& Human Resources, she decided to join her father’s company where she worked in different departments in the span of ten years. Under the tutelage of her father and her older brother, she acquired her entrepreneurial skills. Today, Aiza Diuco is the CEO of her own company, Age Defying Solutions Philippines Corporation (Adsphil), the leading manufacturer of skin whitening products in the Philippines. BACKGROUND: Aiza Diuco has an aunt in the USA who was constantly asking her for skin whitening soap. At that time, there was only papaya skin whitening soap in the market which Aiza would send her. When glutathione skin whitening soap and gluta pills flooded the market, she sent them to her aunt as well. Auntie wanted to know which was a more effective skin whitener-papaya or Glutathione? Aiza Diuco did not have the answer. The researcher that is imbued in her character took over and after intensive research she concluded that papaya and glutathione have different roles in skin whitening, but should be more potent when combined together in one product.

Papaya is an exfoliant and peels off dead skin cells, exposing fairer & fresher skin. But how do you maintain the white skin after exfoliation? Because when exposed to the sun, brown spots called melanin appear. She found the solution in Glutathione which is an agent that prevents melanin formation. So, papaya plus glutathione make a powerful skin whitening product. The absence of one will make the whitening process slower and ineffective. Armed with this knowledge, she decided to put to good use her entrepreneurial skills. She hired a chemist & a pharmacist to experiment & develop the product. Further research led her to discover that Filipinos are obsessed with skin whitening products. Along the way, she had the formulation patented to protect her intellectual property. It made sense to have it patented because Glupa is the only skin whitening product in the world that has a unique combination of papaya & glutathione. Choosing an effective endorser for Glupa was challenging because of budget constraints. Top celebrities charge an eyeful which her start-up

company could not afford. She did not wish to hire a young, fair skinned endorser who will claim that Glupa whitened her skin as that would be deceiving the public. She thought of Boy Abunda, who is not fair-skinned and would seem more credible. Boy Abunda had a popular talk show, The Buzz. Abunda was the number 2 most effective endorser ten years ago when Diuco was starting her company, the number one being Kris Aquino. After trying the Glupa soap and cream, Boy Abunda’s cheeks had a pinkish hue. Seeing the good results on his skin, he agreed to endorse Glupa products which boosted the sales of the company.

that Glupa’s unique formulation could compete with all the skin whitening products out there. She set a monthly sales quota, a sales force to implement it and a team to support it. Her company reached her quota and more, paid off its bank loan in less than 3 years and grew at a steady pace. On its fourth year, Glupa entered the export market and was exported to the Middle East, Malaysia, San Francisco, South Africa, Japan, Europe. Exportation is 60% of the company’s business. From 2 employees, Adsphil, which just celebrated its tenth year, now employs more than 20 skilled and talented management, staff and sales team.

LONG TERM GOALS FOR GLUPA: Aiza Diuco’s goal is for Glupa to be the first brand of choice when it comes to skin whitening. Glutathione & Papaya, the most powerful combination to skin whitening, should be the consumers’ requirement when it comes to skin whitening. She also set a business goal of making Glupa available in all beauty stores and drugstore chains nationwide. Although she was fully aware that the market was saturated with skin whitening products, she was confident

SKIN SOLUTIONS FOR MEN, AND OTHER PRODUCTS Realizing that men are just as vain as women when it concerns skin care, Diuco came up with skin whitening products to cater to the male market. Her products for men include Glupa whitening soap, (using green papaya which is more effective for the male skin), Glupa whitening creams & Glupa Skin Solutions Plus to provide solution to those with oily and acneprone skin.

MORE PRODUCTS COMING SOON To cater to the “mature “ market, Glupa Age Defying Solutions will be launched this September. The products will contain anti-wrinkle ingredients as well as collagen & hyaluronic acid, both good lubricants for the skin and joints. The Glupa Radish Line, also for whitening, will hit the market soon as well as Glupa Feminine Wash for Lightening and Tightening and Glupa Masculine Wash. Glupa’s unique logo- the white and orange spheres merging will be maintained in all the products as well as the black packaging which distinguishes Glupa from all the other skin whitening products which are in white or colorful packaging. Black has that look of “premiumness” Diuco states. LESSONS LEARNED: “ I have learned that in order for you to sustain your presence in the market, you have to maintain the high quality of your product. We sustain the quality by using only the purest natural and high-quality ingredients for Glupa products. We should also be flexible and relevant with the market’s needs. The most important lesson I learned is this: even if you have the best product, most comprehensive Business Plan and most creative Marketing plan, but if you don’t have the quality people to sell your highquality products and implement all your plans, everything comes to naught. Thus, I have always believed that the human resource is the best asset of a company and if you want to succeed, you have to empower your human resources. “

SECRET OF SUCCESS Having a product of real value is my secret to success. I think it has addressed the unending search of consumers for skin whitening products with the fastest result. I will continue to maintain its quality and diversify by introducing other Glupa products in the market to address the changing needs of the consumers. Let me walk you thru another major secret to my success. I plan and research but before I implement or decide on something, I pray. I find meditative value in praying because it calms me, helps me organize my thoughts and feelings, makes me think better, grounds my soul so I can deal with people and challenges in a strong, calm and centered manner. Business can be tough but daily prayer helps me to focus on what really matters and maintain a positive mind and soul. n

COMES TO BALI

It doesn’t feel like work when you are in Bali. That’s exactly how we, the filmmakers and the Hollywood actors felt as we all gathered to talk of their respective movies one sunny day in paradise. Somehow, the relaxed and laid-back ambiance with the background of the ocean, tropical plants and the invigorating island breeze, gives everyone that positive welcome feeling. Bali, which is Indonesia’s main tourist destination and has a population of 4.2 million, is actually composed of four ethnic groups – Balinese, Javanese, Baliaga and Madurese. manilaupmagazine.com

ON AND OFF THE RED CARPET Hollywood actors Chris Hemsworth, who was promoting “Men in Black: International”, and Tom Holland, who was there for “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” talked to us about their Bali experience. Chris said, “It’s tough. Like it might’ve been a long flight, but come on, it’s better than the usual junket places.” Chris revealed that it was not his first time in Bali. “It is a five-hour flight from Australia and I’ve probably been here four or five times on surf trips, and then I got married here in a little island called Sumba just off here in a place called Nihiwatu, which is a little eco resort thing. It’s great. So, I love this place. And I learned in Indonesian in primary school and high school. When I say learned, it’s about as impressive as most Spanish, which is bad.” He added, “I’ve shot so much on a soundstage, green screen, blue screen, special effects, and so on, pretty mind numbing environment. And, so I definitely have a sort of thirst or hunger for the true environments. There is a different energy that you can pull from, and you know, your imagination is not spent on trying to build or create the world you’re supposed to be in and habiting. You’re just right there with the character, the set does all that work for you, and it’s why I love it.”

John Cohen

It was a perfect setting to talk of “Angry Birds Movie 2” which brags of a diverse multi-talented cast and which highlighted the work of an international group of animators. Producer John Cohen, who was also involved in the first “Angry Birds” movie, talked to us about his latest installment in the popular franchise. Helmed by “The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack” creator Thurop Van Orman and co-directed by John Rice from the script of Peter Ackerman, the sequel tells of the flightless birds and scheming green pigs taking their feud to the next level. When a new threat emerges that puts both Bird and Pig Island in danger, Red (Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad), Bomb (Danny McBride), and Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage) recruit Chuck’s sister Silver (Rachel Bloom) and team up with pigs Leonard (Bill Hader), his assistant Courtney (Awkwafina), and techpig Garry (Sterling K. Brown) to forge an unsteady truce and form an unlikely superteam to save their homes.

ON AND OFF THE RED CARPET He confessed that he loves exploring exotic places. “Yeah, I mean you’re kind of on set, you do that. I mean, in particular on this, you’re working from the sunup until sundown. You’re kind of on a set somewhere. And, it’s not the best way to go on an experience at location, but you have an instant sort of, heavily built relationship, whether you want it or not, with the people you’re working with from that area. And, thankfully, we’ve been very fortunate with those interactions. I’d love to spend more time when I have more days off, but a film shoot is pretty full on.”

Chris Hemsworth

Travelling all over the world while doing “Thor” or “Avengers” movies as well, Chris admitted he and his wife are lucky to be able to juggle their schedules and still take care of their kids in school. “We’ve been lucky that things have sort of fallen in a sequence where we went working at the same time for any great deal. I mean, occasionally there’s a crossover, but for the most part we’ve been able to manage that. But the older they get, the trickier it is. And, my focus becomes more about can I shoot at home, and can I get this project to be shooting in Australia as opposed to various spots around the world, more and more now that the kids are definitely planted there in Byron Bay. So, I don’t know. I mean, anyone I’ve spoken to in the industry who has kids, there’s not a short, simple answer to it. It’s an ongoing assessment and reassessment and kind of reshuffling.”

Spider Man Movie

As for Tom Holland, he narrated how simply honored he is to be sitting in Bali and talking of his movie. He disclosed, “It’s funny, I was having a pint with a friend the other day, and I’ve been working a lot recently and I’m tired and saying ‘Uh I’ve got to go to work next week, I got to go to work’. He’s like ‘Where are you working?” I said ‘In Bali’. He’s like ‘Shut up dude, shut up’. So yeah, it’s wonderful to be here.” So what’s a vacation like for Tom?

Tom Holland

manilaupmagazine.com

“Coming to Bali to do press,” he admitted. Asked what he does on his free time, Tom replied, “Do you know Duolingo? Have you ever heard of Duolingo? It’s an app on the phone and I find it really good. I’m learning Spanish and I can feel myself getting better but anytime I’m in a situation where I have to speak Spanish I panic, and I forget everything. We’re here for four days working and then we go to China afterwards for press, and my brother and I are going to stay here for a few days and go scuba diving and maybe skydiving.”

17

ON AND OFF THE RED CARPET

While in Bali, we also visited Seminyak on the west coast of Bali in Indonesia, just north of Kuta and Legian. Considered also as the party hub in the area, we met Filipina Food and Beverage Public Relations Manager of Double Six Hotel, Sheila Manalac, a former journalist who found her new calling in public relations in Seminyak very rewarding.

After having drinks at their breathtaking Rooftop Sunset Bar and then having a sumptuous dinner at their Hollywood-themed The Plantation Grill, where jazz music is played by various local performers and musicians enthralled us, we immediately knew this could easily be the next destination of Hollywood stars and filmmakers. At The Plantation Grill, one is spoiled by the friendly staff and the amazing mouth-watery food from lobster thermidor to juicy T-bone steaks to delicious out-of-this world desserts. ith a lofty reputation as one of the most prestigious hotels on the French Riviera, Chateau de la Messardiere has a lot to live up to. All too often, establishments with massive reputations often fail miserably to live up to the hype. But this time, my stay far exceeded even my highest expectations.

Chateau de la Messardiere is reminiscent of a chateau straight from a Disney fairytale with its towers, turrets and domes and its idyllic setting in 25 acres of magnificently landscaped gardens surrounded by 10 hectares of pine forest with sweeping vistas of Ramatuelle’s vineyards down to the turquoise sea of the Bay of Pampellone. Its secluded location makes it a perfect getaway from the bustle of the coastal resorts of the French Riviera, yet is only a 3-5-minute drive from St. Tropez. There is a 24/7 free shuttle service to the centre of St. Tropez and the hotel’s private Tropezina Beach. manilaupmagazine.com

Anna Marie Z. Mateescu

Anna Marie Z. Mateescu, often called Genn went to school at St. Theresa’s College and St. Paul College with a major degree in Industrial Communications and a minor in Journalism in the Philippines. She pursued higher education here in the United States. While her father was an expatriate working as an Architect/Engineer

abroad, she had the luxury to travel with him to many parts of the world. Among them were Riyadh, Jeddah, and Canada. Thereafter, she attended the William Mitchel College of Law in Minnesota taking Corporate studies after which she obtained a BA minor in Business at Pepperdine University in California. During her college days, she decided to enter the travel industry and worked as a Sales Travel Agent undergoing training in ticketing, IATA rules training (The International Air Transport Association - a trade association of the world’s airlines in which a number of standards are defined under the umbrella of IATA). With this training on hand, she continued to travel around the globe and has not stopped to include Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan and the European continent. In California, she dabbled in Commercial & Residential Real Estate. For more than 20 years,

her legal studies have been put to practice in the fields of Corporate, REO (Real Estate Owned), Due Diligence, Civil Litigation, Banking & Workers Comp. The most stressful, she says, is Civil Litigation. “As a conglomeration of all the above, travel tops the charts as it continually makes one modest while one continues to see what a tiny place one occupies in the world. Having been in the legal field for a long time, experiencing a highly cut-throat job of competition and deadlines, the only way to recharge our senses and the rigors of life is to TRAVEL. Stop worrying about the potholes in the road and enjoy the journey” she declares. It goes without saying that the chance to be given the opportunity to be part of the Travel section of “Manila Up Magazine” is a core privilege and pleasure to share and enlighten our readers about her experiences of world travel as if they were in it.

GRAND ADVENTURE

The Great Barrier Reef , Cairns Queensland, AUSTRALIA – The highlight as one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth. One of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts, the Great Barrier Reef is blessed with the breathtaking beauty of the world’s largest coral reef. The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays and literally hundreds of picturesque tropical islands with some of the world’s most beautiful sunsoaked, golden beaches. Because of its natural beauty, the Great Barrier Reef has become one of the world’s most sought after tourist destinations. Although coral reefs have been around for over 500 million years, the Great

26

Barrier Reef is relatively young at 500,000 years, and this most modern form is only 8,000 years old, having developed after the last ice age. A visitor to the Great Barrier Reef can enjoy many experiences including snorkeling, scuba diving, aircraft or helicopter tours, bare boats (self-sail), glass-bottomed boat viewing, semi-submersibles and educational trips, cruise ship tours, whale watching and swimming with dolphins. Have traveled all over Asia, Hawaii, nothing can beat the colorful, live scenic view of the Barrier Reef. (A MUST SEE) Snorkeling & Diving gets you up close and personal with the reef. GRAND ADVENTURE of a large group of mammals called BATS predominantly found in Cairns and other parts of Australia. This fruit bats usually fly at 6:00pm and during the day they remain hanging on trees. There are microbats and megabats. Flying-foxes are usually found in coastal areas of melaleuca and casuarina swamps, mangroves, heath, dry and wet eucalypt forests, woodlands and rainforests. During daylight, bats hang in the trees outside the Cairns City Library in mass roosts called “camps.” The animals look like large black fruit dangling from the branches. At sunset, they wake up, wheeling acrobatically into the night sky to spend the night feasting on Eucalyptus pollen, fruit, and nectars. Bats live in other Australian cities, but you usually have to journey a bit to see them. But in Cairns, the bats roost right in the city center. Sadly, the Cairns City Council does not like the bats being there, and has already removed some roost trees to discourage the animals from making themselves at home.

But in Cairns, a Queensland city that acts as a gateway to both tropical north with its world heritage rainforests and the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef, you can see Spectacled flying foxes in the middle of town, roosting in the grounds of the beautiful library. You can even stay in the adjacent Novotel hotel and overlook the camps and watch the evening flyout in comfort from your room. FLYING OVERHEAD & WHITEHAVEN BEACH Sometimes the best view is achieved from great heights, and no place is this more apparent than the Great Barrier Reef. Curious coral islands such as Heart Reef in the Whitsundays or the heavenly escape of Whitehaven Beach are at their most beautiful when seen from a bird’s eye view. When trying to decide if I should snorkel in the GBR or do a scenic flight over it, I couldn’t choose. So, I did both! It was expensive, but I knew I was probably only going to go to Australia once

GRAND ADVENTURE in my life. That and the fact that the Great Barrier Reef isn’t always going to be around unfortunately. It was worth the splurge for sure. The next decision I had was whether to fly over the GBR or Whitehaven Beach. In my research, I stumbled upon GSL Aviation, who offered a Reef and Island Scenic Flight that highlights both! I also got some personal recommendations to go with this company after I had already booked with them, so I felt really good about my decision. Word of mouth is the best advertising, right? Oh, and GSL aviation offers planes with guaranteed window seats, which is super important when doing a scenic flight, obviously. I chose the 60-minute Reef and Island Scenic Flight far longer than most scenic flights. If I was going to do it, I was going to get the full experience!

TURTLES OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF Home to six of the world’s seven marine turtles, the Great Barrier Reef is the perfect place to catch a glimpse of these timid reptiles. These friendly giants are also crucial in the wellbeing and future growth of this complex ecosystem; turtles are one of the few marine lifeforms to eat seagrass, a form of sea vegetation. This grass needs to be kept short (and is, thanks to turtle grazing) in order for other lifeforms to flourish on the sea bed. KALEIDOSCOPIC FISH One of the main draws to the Great Barrier Reef for any curious traveler is the opportunity to see some of the world’s most beautiful fish. There are an estimated 1,500 species of fish along the reef, representing over 130 different families of fish. Covering all shapes, characters, sizes and

(sometimes changing) colors, these impressive, colorful schools span 2,900 individual coral reefs across this World Heritage Site. The reef ’s islands range from tiny rocky outcrops, to sprawling national parks of untouched rain forest, to exclusive private resorts fringed with powder-white beaches. In the center, the Whitsunday an archipelago of 74 islands – can accessed by flying directly to Hamilton Island (the islands’ main hub), or by ferry from Airlie Beach, the closest hub on the mainland. Stay on popular Whitsunday holiday locations like Hamilton Island and Long Island’s Palm Bay Resort. On the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Heron Island is an eco-haven, with turtle nesting sites and an on-site research station. At the northern end of the reef, Lizard Island – 240km north of Cairns – is home to an ultra-luxe retreat with just 40 rooms.

GRAND ADVENTURE

There’s an air of mystery surrounding the elusive yet curious dwarf minke whales. Where they go to exactly, no one yet knows,” explains Dr Matt Curnock from James Cook University. “They seem to love the northern waters of the Coral Sea for just a few weeks every year and then simply disappear. No one has yet tagged them so they simply disappear off our radar.” Getting up close and personal with huge marine mammals underwater, especially whales is something many dreamed of doing and the overwhelming allure of something as mystical as the dwarf minke whales is impossible to resist. Most tours to swim with dwarf minke whales depart from Cairns or Port Douglas. There are two types of tours either a day trip or on a longer liveaboard that gives you the best chance to see dwarf minke whales over a number of days. Operators who run liveaboard experience include Mike Ball Dive Expeditions, Spirit of Freedom, Divers Den and Eye-to-Eye Marine Encounters. Operators who offer a single day trip include The Silver Series and Poseidon. All companies offering minke whale encounters must be licensed so check this first and remember they are wild animals and simply might not even turn up. It’s important to note that the encounter is controlled to minimize the impact on the animals and this includes not swimming after the animals. Minke whales are curious so just float around and let them come and eyeball you. n manilaupmagazine.com

THE SILENT WITNESS OF CREATION

(STONEHENGE, SALISBURY)

KINGDOM ADVENTURE by GILDA PINEDA DIONELA 30

“Stonehenge” is located on the Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England. Brilliant minds and ordinary visitors from all over the world are fascinated by the astounding, gigantic stone monuments that take us back in time to around 5,000 years. The evolutionary model states that Stonehenge was the last edifice built during the Neolithic period, which is between the Stone Age (3.2 million years up to 2000BCE) and the Bronze Age. The first time I visited Stonehenge, I didn’t even know what those stones were! It looked as though enormous rocks had been scattered everywhere. Huge trilithon (two large stones set upright and horizontal slabs, called ‘lintel’, that formed archways) mesmerized me. Altogether, there are more than 90 stones remaining on the site, some erected on a circular layout and others broken and lying on

the ground. My gratitude for the work done by many scientists about Stonehenge, from the 17th Century archaeologist, John Aubrey, to modern day Mike Parker Pearson and his team, for having explained that these are not merely scattered stones. Those stones were originally arranged as an outer circle of upright ‘Sarsens’ with curved lintel stones. Then, the ‘Bluestone’ circle was arranged within the Sarsen circle. Next, there were Sarsens in a horseshoe shape, which were composed of five massive trilithons. Today only three are still standing. The average weight of these massive trilithon sarsen stones average 20 tonnes; the biggest weigh around 40 tonnes and rise to 20 feet. The bluestones weigh around 1 to 3 tonnes. Scientific studies give many theories as to why Stonehenge was built. These include: for healing purposes; as a cemetery; to study the movement of the Sun and Moon; and as a place for celebrations of Midsummer’s Day (the longest day of manilaupmagazine.com

KINGDOM ADVENTURE

the year) and Midwinter’s Day (the shortest day of the year).. Despite exhaustive work, the exact purpose of Stonehenge remains a mystery. The Sarsens came from deposits of silcrete on the peak of the Marlborough Downs, 30 kms (18 miles) north of Stonehenge. The Bluestones were from the Preseli hills in Pembrokeshire, Wales, which is 290 kms (180 miles) away from Stonehenge. Another aspect that puzzled scientists was: how people built it and managed to transport tonnes of stones from such a great distance in the absence of the advanced technology that we have today. Architects, engineers and astronomers confirm that the calculations made, prior to building Stonehenge, were precise. This only proves one thing: The Bible is accurate in its calculation about Creation. That God created man in His own image. Since the beginning of time, the intellect and skills of mankind already present. There never was a time when humans underwent the stages: from ape, apeman, and finally to man. Nor was there ever a stone age, when men were considered primitive, using stones as their only tools. Stone, bronze and iron were effective tools used simultaneously when God created the heavens and the earth, just as they are in use today. One may be preferred over another, simply due to availability and need. Genesis 4:22 reads: “Zillah also had a son, Tubal-Cain, who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron.” TubalCain was a descendant of Cain and part of the eighth generation from Adam. He lived before Noah’s flood. Bible scholars date Noah’s flood to around 2,348 BC, or around 4,500 years ago. Did Stonehenge survive Noah’s flood? All the continents of the earth are manilaupmagazine.com

composed of 1.8 kms or 1.118-miledeep sedimentary rocks laid down during the flood, so that any man-made structure had to have been built after the flood, including Stonehenge. The Creator of Heaven and Earth has a reason why Stonehenge remains standing up to this modern day. He knew the day would come when people believe all sorts of things except Jesus. He foresaw a generation proud enough to insult our first parents and the written Word of God, which He honours above His name (Psalm 138:2). Despite modern technology no one can tell what Stonehenge is for and how they moved the mountain rock from Wales to England. The result of various analyses conducted by experts can only give possibilities but not the exact story, because they themselves were not there. Sarsens and Bluestones in Stonehenge are chips of the Earth Crust. The Earth, compared to 200 billion galaxies in the Universe, is just a dot. I am bewildered at how some scientists are brave enough to claim to know the beginning of this vast universe, yet, at the same time deny the existence of the Almighty Living God, when equally intelligent and talented scientists, with the same technology available to them, humbly say Stonehenge is a mystery. If a secular scientist can’t exactly tell the real story about the oldest man made structure in an area covering some 26 kms, how can another group of secular scientists be sure of the beginning of immeasurable galaxies and the exact age of the earth when they were also not present during those times? There are no available documents or evidence to prove the claim. However, the Creation by God was recorded in the Bible. I can hear the voice of God

asking out loud in Job 38:4: “Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding.” He is asking those who pretend to know the beginning of the universe, who say swirling gas turned into everything else. In the Garden of Eden, when the earth was young, the temptation offered by the serpent was: “Man to disobey God, and man will be like God” (Genesis 3:5). It is evident today that many were tempted and like to be god. 1 Samuel 2:2 says: “There is none holy as the Lord: for there is none beside. Thee: neither is there any rock like our God.” THE ETERNAL ROCK Stonehenge is standing tall, quietly leaving modern science bemused. But how about when stones cry out? Volcanic eruptions not only make terrifying sounds but leave a mark for thousands of years as a memorial. The rocks from Mt. Kilauea, Hualalai, in the Big Island of Hawaii, directly refute the ‘millions of years’ dating commonly used today. Rocks testify to the existence of God. Isaiah 26:4: “Trust in the LORD forever, for in GOD the LORD, we have an everlasting Rock.” Why did Isaiah use the metaphor of the Rock in the place of the Messiah? The “Rock” symbolizes protection and security from ancient times and up to the present. The earth’s crust is basically made up of rocks. It is composed of several minerals and elements (e.g. sulphur) that are necessary for the sustainability of all human, plant and animal life. Isaiah knew by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that Jesus is the Eternal Rock, the One who can sustain eternal life. He is the everlasting source of protection and security on earth and in heaven.

KINGDOM ADVENTURE

Rocks are so ordinary that most people take their importance for granted. Stones stay on earth for thousands of years, like Stonehenge, but humans do not. Most people walk upon the earth’s crust on a daily basis take it for granted.. But there is a place in which they will stay longer than they could ever think of, which they cannot ignore. That is a dwelling place of mankind with God where there are no more tears or sickness for those who believe in Jesus. And those who do not believe will take part in the lake which burns with fire and sulphur. Trying to go to a place of eternal joy with our own efforts will not work. Even some priests or ministers that you may know may not enter the Kingdom of Heaven, no matter how good they thought they were. Matthew 5:20 reads: “For I tell you that unless your righteousness

32

surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” Who can possibly surpass the righteousness of the Law-keeping Pharisees? No man but One. Jesus is the only One who can surpass the righteousness of the Pharisees. The righteousness of the Only Begotten Son of God is all we need. Those who believe in their heart that Jesus is Lord and follow Him can enter the Kingdom of God. We do not see Jesus with the naked eye while on earth, but He sent teachers who taught the truth, including the smallest details of God’s Law that Jesus already achieved. Jesus is the Only Rock, the Living Stone that can give eternal security, not our diamonds, gold, intelligence or fame, but the precious blood of Jesus when He died on the cross for everyone. This is why He is the Chief Cornerstone of Civilisation. n

CYNTHIA BARKER Interviewed by Gilda Pineda Dionela

Double Portion of Honour – The Worshipful, Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Hertsmere - Cynthia Barker

A

new dawn is breaking in the horizon of United Kingdom. A new leader of the ruling party, the Conservative Party elected the new Prime Minister, Boris Johnson. New hope and new aspirations. The world is looking forward to the new Great United Kingdom. Members of the public like myself are praying that the Lord may guide him in every decision that he will make. And, may the citizens of the United Kingdom rediscover who they are; a nation of those who fear and revere the Living God who created the heavens and earth, who gave His only begotten Son Jesus Christ. May the power of the Holy Spirit rekindle

the nation for this generation and leave a posterity to its descendants to enjoy the goodness of God in this land. Our scriptural prayer: Psalm 33:12 (NKJV) Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, the people whom He has chosen for His own inheritance. To summarize what happened in the political arena these past three years, can only be described as extraordinary. The political parties in the UK are: Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Scottish Nationalist Party, United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP) and the Green Party. The Conservative party had entered into an agreement with Democratic Unionist Party-

Northern Ireland to keep their party in power. Moving forward, the Brexit Deal formulated by former Prime Minister Theresa May and her Cabinet members had been rejected by the Parliament three times, a historical government defeat. When the European Election was held, the Conservative Party had suffered tremendous loss which gave rise to a new party called the Brexit Party. Eventually, Theresa May resigned as Prime Minister for failing to deliver Brexit on time. The issue on Brexit took people to both Pro-remain and Pro-exits to the streets to stage protests. The public clearly lost its confidence in the political system. This is just a snippet of the mood of politics in the United Kingdom.

33

KINGDOM ADVENTURE elected officials will serve based on his/her character and judgement not just to the Party to which they belong to. Let us hear straight from Ms. Cynthia Barker: GPD: “Kindly describe the position you run for last 2 May 2019 local elections in the United Kingdom”. CB: “I did run for re-election in the Borough but for a completely new ward and new seat. Due to the Boundary Change on 2nd May 2019, my seat in Potters Bar was made redundant and I was assigned to contest one of the most marginal seats in the Borough.” GPD: “You were elected as Deputy Mayor of Hertsmere. What is the process to be chosen as one?” CB: “The Deputy Mayor is an elected Councillor elected by fellow Councillors. Each political party will nominate each candidate. The Councillors present then vote by hand as you’d have seen in the webcast of the council meeting on 15 May 2019.

But then, as the result of 2 May 2019 elections amidst this turmoil, British-Filipina Councillor under Conservative Party, Cynthia Barker won the re-election in Hertsmere. She also won as Councillor and elected by her colleagues as Deputy Mayor of Hertsmere. That is astonishing. She convinced the voting public that she can serve them best regardless of their perception of political parties. Her fellow public servants bestowed upon her the trust to act in place of the Worshipful Mayor, the Mayor of the Borough of Hertsmere, Alan Plancey, in case he is not available. At the end of the day the political parties give guidelines but aside from the political party that they are affiliated with, 34

(This is for the information of Filipinos. In the Philippines, the public vote for Mayor and Vice Mayor are held during local elections decided by the public. In the UK, elected Councillors are the ones who vote for the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.) GPD: “Are you still President of the Rotary Club? You are very active in the FilipinoCommunity, and other Non-Government Organizations. Apart from sharing the vision of FWA- UK how do you use your influence in politics to help Filipinos in the UK? CB: “I just finished my term as President of the Rotary Club of Elstree & Borehamwood. I remain active in our club and this year I’ll be serving as club secretary. manilaupmagazine.com

KINGDOM ADVENTURE

In everything I do politically, I have the support of the Conservative Party. It is important to use my position to promote the Filipino community in Britain and Europe. I also founded the “Conservative Friends of the Philippines” which is aimed at providing the Filipino community in the UK a platform with which to express their values of hard work and strong family ties, in support of the Conservative Party in the UK. I also hope to encourage, mentor and help develop future candidates from our Filipino community. “ GPD:” Politics in the UK is in a complicated situation, your honour winning as Deputy Mayor is quite impressive. What is your secret? CB: “My secret is not really a secret. I take pride being a Filipina. My heritage is my strength. The Conservative Party embraces that.

We have traits that are valuable to political parties - skills, hard work, loyalty, honesty, trustworthiness and faith values. As economic migrants, we also have a general aspiration to improve our lives here which serves as our inspiration.” GPD: “What should the immigrants in this country expect with the Brexit; Filipinos who are EU Citizens and other Filipino migrants in this country? CB: “I’d say continue doing what we’re doing in terms of work and residency. We have nothing to fear for as residents here in the U.K.” It is true that the Filipino traits mentioned by Ms. Cynthia is a big factor that this country is known as a second home for many of us, which welcomed us and in return, our prayers, loyalty and service will be for this great nation. And we believe, Psalm 22:28(NKJV) “For the kingdom is the Lord’s, And He rules over the nations.” n

THE KAT’S OUT OF THE BAG: THE NINE SIMULTANEOUS LIVES OF KATHARINE KRAMER

ince its inception, those living in Tinseltown rapaciously pursue its offerings of fortune and/ or notoriety abundant in its rich history. How does one carry this weight on their shoulders and continue to perform for the public? manilaupmagazine.com

GLASS HALF FIL Living this reality is Katharine “Kat” Kramer, for whom it just comes naturally. Born of producer-director Stanley Kramer and film & TV actress Karen Sharpe, the godchild and namesake of Katharine Hepburn inherently involves herself with socially conscious works in an effort to be groundbreaking while remaining grounded. Using her film company as a platform to shed light on tough-to-tackle topics such as animal captivity, hunting, LGBTQ bullying, and sexual abuse to name a few, Kat attacks current issues in a way that makes them accessible and relatable. Growing up immersed in activism, when asked if it was her pedigree that pushed her into change-inspiring films or out of her own volition, Kat attributed her need to create compelling content to nature over nurture. Following in her late father’s footsteps, she created “Kat Kramer’s Films That Change the World”, a series of films produced in order to raise awareness about social issues in an artistic manner. Now in its 10th year, the actress continues to perpetuate Stanley Kramer’s legacy by presenting a lot of films at Sunset Gower Studios, formerly Columbia Pictures, where Mr. Kramer had a production deal.

GLASS HALF FIL Though not officially part of said series, Mother’s Day Memories is a short film about a woman facing Alzheimer’s disease. Told from the perspective of the afflicted character’s family, Kat intends to present the short as an outreach film for the Alzheimer’s Association and national organizations. The touching tale debuted during the LA Shorts Fest and has been accepted into the Niagara Falls International Film Festival in New York – as has Mother’s. It is sure to garner numerous accolades considering Kat is no stranger to the film festival circuit. Another feature Kat co-

produced and co-starred in called Turnover had a special screening at the Golden State Film Festival where it won Best Picture.

the Love International Film Festival (on Kat’s mother’s birthday, no less) where Kat is nominated for Best Supporting Actress.

In Turnover, a family-driven dramedy positing to be the inclusion film of the year, the cast reflects a diverse talent pool featuring actors with Downs syndrome and storyline involving deaf characters. As an advocate for the deaf community, Kat wanted to bring the issue of diversity-in-casting to light through authenticity; by casting people with disabilities. Prior to its November release, the film will be screened at

Ever wanting to push the envelope not only on social matters but also in her own performance pieces, Kat strives to illuminate even the darkest of places, including portraying (and working with) difficult characters. The actress admits that her most challenging role to date is that of her two male characters Rabbi Herbert Schweitzergold and B. Fred Baker in the TV series Child of the ‘70s. she has interacted with, yet goes onto explain “it’s about having a conversation with them, and finding yourself in each character”. Even Mick Jagger, whose beloved songs have made many a list of music’s most misogynist lyrics, is a target for Kat’s do-gooder ways. In her solo stage show My Duet with Mick, she puts her own spin on things insinuating that they ought to collaborate. And while it takes stones to keep the covers rolling, Kat is not one to shy away from critics or controversy (she is after all a Kramer). An empath at heart, Kat is led by, drawn to, and surrounds herself with people of equal-minded openness to humanity’s misgivings. Longtime friend, idol, and fellow actress Lily Tomlin frequents Kat’s successes and shares her affinity for animal rights. Lily, who won an Emmy for Best Voice Narration in the HBO documentary An Apology to Elephants, has also been involved with passion projects showcased by Kat including Elephants and Man: A Litany of Tragedy and LOVE & BANANAS: An Elephant Story. Both women continue propagating for the release of Billy the elephant from the LA Zoo. Kat also sang “Bless The Beasts And Children” from Stanley Kramer’s film of the same name when Lily received the Hope Award from the PETCO

Foundation, and has performed with animal-free circus Le PeTiT CiRqUe for Circus PAWS (the Performing Animal Welfare Society). Having already accomplished so much, Kat is constantly abuzz. While her father worked on one film at a time, she feels the need to tackle ten projects at once. It is how the actress-producer keeps up with the times, her self-admitted reaction to “becoming woke”. Kat seeks to create a sense of community in a world that is growing divisive; whether that entails rehabilitating gang members or honoring new recipients with her established Hunt for Humanity Award, named after the prestigious activist Marsha Hunt. Like her late godmother, the great Katharine Hepburn, she feels the need to continuously immerse herself in work. Co-writing scripts with others, developing a one person show coming out in the fall of 2020 (her goal is the Hollywood Fringe Festival), and eventually writing a book paying homage to her father with some autobiographical aspects.

manilaupmagazine.com

Kat Kramer is so much more than a surname – she carries on a legacy. She felt lead by her father’s spirit when she selected The Cove as one of her films that changed the world, and later went on to change the façade of Santa Monica by closing down “The Hump” restaurant by protesting its serving of whale meat; a story covered by CNN. Most recently she participated in The Official Animal Rights March in Downtown LA despite the scare felt in the wake of recent mass shootings. This is her constant endeavor, not a flash in the pan. She is always trying to introduce new issues while reinforcing recurring ones. Her labors of love are all about progress. And while she attributes her film selections to something almost divine interventionlike, for those who are interested in bringing forth new ideas she welcomes projects finding her rather than seeking them out, so direct all inquiries to her websites www.katharinekramer.com and www. katkramersfilmsthatchangetheworld.com. “Plug issues on social media. It’s important for citizens to speak out. Because one voice can make a different. One film CAN change the world.” – Kat Kramer n 41

THE OFFICIAL GREEN QUEEN: CHANGING THE MEANING OF THE WORD INFLUENCER

M

y name is Luissa Burton known online as “The Official Green Queen”. My mission: to make being green and acting green, hip, aspirational and cool especially amongst the younger generation. What does it mean to be green? To reduce, reuse, rethink, recycle and have respect for our planet. My background is in pageantry and modelling. However, I am not, as people like to stereotype models “just a pretty face”. I am passionately changing the meaning of the word model to role model. This is an age where the internet has taken over with the average user spending three hours and fifteen minutes on their mobile phone every day. It is important to me that my platform, voice and visibility is used in a positive way, to educate and inspire humanity on issues facing our planet. I have built up an online following across various media

manilaupmagazine.com

channels due to my pageant history and modelling career through which I have now created my “The Official Green Queen” brand, coining the motto “green is the new sexy”. However, the word “influencer” has been overused. Being an influencer is when you are able to provide value to a life or a cause and produce results. You do not have “influence” because 20,000 people liked one photo. True influence comes from what you do and the example you set. Change is created from the consistency of your words and actions and as a result, others will rise up to the challenge to join you. I want to shift the way we view what authentic influence is and to inspire the world to do the same. A little history about my environmental journey. In 2016, I attended Miss Earth, an environmental pageant in the Philippines. Among other awareness initiatives, we spent one month visiting schools and universities talking about important issues to students and also planting

trees at many different locations throughout the country. Later, in 2018, I took part in and won Miss Europe World. The first British woman to accomplish this. After winning, I set a goal to climb Europe’s highest mountain wearing the sash to help raise awareness to other issues that affect millions of people including myself, which are skin conditions. I was able to raise $15,000 for the British Skin Foundation. When working as a model, I noticed a concerning lack of regard for the environment within the industry. I was constantly being encouraged to shoot with animal furs which I refused to do. Makeup products were tested on animals, an avoidable horror that we no longer need to partake in and it hurts me how “fast fashion” is the second biggest polluting industry to our planet. I have worked in an industry based on perfection whilst suffering from both eczema and psoriasis. At times it can

47

FEATURE cover my entire body and face in painful sores. This led me to do deep research resulting in me now only using non-toxic, vegan, cruelty-free beauty products which I insist I use during photo shoots. We all have a personal responsibility to take care of our health and to be conscious of the toxins we are putting into and onto our bodies as well as the impact we are leaving on the planet and further generations. This naturally led me to work with an eco couture fashion designer named Deborah Lindquist in Los Angeles shooting sustainable high fashion that is chic and stylish. The outfits contained organic materials, recycled fishing nets and other reworked materials. My passion to spread the eco message has now expanded far beyond the fashion industry. Through my extensive travels it has hurt me to see the damage we have done to the world. A clear example was during my visit to Bali on an eco tour. Although I was staying at green lodges and partaking in eco-tourism activities, what I found outside those walls was very different: piles of discarded single use plastics on the pavements where children play; at the beach where marine life can ingest and ultimately die. It is interesting what tourism boards and social media do not show on the true conditions of this premium vacation destination. This was not the idyllic photographs one sees on Instagram. With my platform gaining strength, I met with the First Lady of Ghana in

Accra as Miss Earth England to talk about the sanitation problems and environmental issues there due to the lack of trash bins in the city. The President and the First Lady pledged to budget for more trash bins around the city after our meeting, which has now been implemented. Several beauty queens along with myself worked with the local community to clear up trash from the streets. It was a beautiful scene of camaraderie as everyone worked together for the restoration of our planet one step at a time. Micro effort equaling macro effect. In 2011, I decided to hike Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. I must confess it was exhausting, emotionally draining, mentally testing and at times I wanted to give up. Regardless, it was worth it when the sun broke through on the final summit night where I got to see the earth in all of its glory. The rolling clouds below me looked crystal white and pristine. The glacier walls on the final stretch to the summit looked like glistening paintings. The scenery below of grassland and savannah made me think of all the magnificent animals that majestically wandered its plains. In that moment I realised the vulnerability of our Earth, our home, and our need to protect it. Furthermore, I also helped to raise money for Child Reach International charity during the climb. We have forgotten to be good guests and to walk lightly on Earth like its other creatures do.

Why is it OUR combined responsibility to make protecting the planet the number one priority? It boils down to simply the sustainability of all life. We knew about these problems decades ago and we have made political agreements and business decisions that we are now having to deal with the consequences of today. We cannot be blind to this and postpone action any longer, we are in fact late. Everything was created to be interconnected. Everything has a ripple effect as a result of the decisions we make. We cannot continue to pretend or remain unaware that we have a global problem. My purpose as “The Official Green Queen is to make a massive difference in creating a better tomorrow. n

y name is Amanda Russo. I currently live in Avondale, Pennsylvania and am your new Miss Young Philippines USA 2019. I’m a 10th grade student attending Avon Grove High School, a consistent high honors student and have received the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence. I won 2018 East Coast Jr. Ms. Pennsylvania and East Coast 2018 National Runway Model of the Year. Some side hobbies that I participate in are basketball, volleyball, the school choral, dance, arts, and modeling. Ever since I was young, I had always dreamed of being a princess and through modeling, I have finally been given the great opportunity. I have gained many great experiences through modeling and have made many great friends,

but I would have to say trying on all of the beautiful gowns would have to be a personal favorite! In the past I could never have dreamt of even coming close to such a prestigious competition like Miss Philippines USA and now, that dream is a reality! Throughout the competition, I have earned new friends, new experiences, and new influences from my astonishing culture. I feel like this type of opportunity only comes around once in a lifetime and I truly believe that being part of this competition was destiny. Growing up with a Filipino mother and grandparents in the house, I have always felt a strong passion for wanting to know more about my roots and culture. Filipinos take pride in their families, and it has always been family first. I

have always been impressed by how Filipinos are always so bubbly, humble, and kind to others. Us Filipinos are known for being unimaginably kind and welcoming and that is the main reason why I joined this pageant, to not only create long-lasting friendships but to further explore my culture. Filipinos help one another for even the smallest of things. Every responsibility can be easily overcome if we all work together. I am a current youth advocate for the Got Help Organization. This organization is founded by Filipinos, a non-profit organization which is based in Pennsylvania. Together we help raise funds to send to the less fortunate, not only to the Philippines but throughout the world. I personally bake cupcakes to sell for this organization.

Throughout exploring my current advocacy, I have always believed in the power of wisdom with age, but it seems that unfortunately, many of us are taking that wisdom for granted. As a volunteer at senior citizen and rehabilitation homes, working with the elderly brings me great joy and warms my heart. So, I would like to pursue helping the elderly, not only here in the U.S. but most especially in the Philippines. I would like to use my voice to help those who are unable to complete everyday tasks and care for themselves. I am hoping that this publicity will help not only raise awareness for my cause but will encourage others to help our elders as well. It is an honor and a privilege to represent the Filipino community. My message to the Filipinos all around the world is to stay humble, be proud and help one another. Just by doing the smallest good deed, you can change someone else’s entire life. This will only be the beginning of a better future. Be proud to be a Filipino, this is a part of who you are. Embrace your uniqueness and don’t let anyone change you. Thank you, everyone, for your continued support! n

“BE PROUD TO BE A FILIPINO, THIS IS A PART OF WHO YOU ARE. EMBRACE YOUR UNIQUENESS AND DON’T LET ANYONE CHANGE YOU. “ - Amanda Russo Miss Young Philippines USA 2019

STEFANO GIUSEPPE RIBOLI

t is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Stefano Riboli, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and the beloved patriarch of San Antonio Winery. He passed peacefully at his home surrounded by family on July 3 and went to be with our Lord at the age of 97. Stefano was born in Los Angeles on September 8, 1921 and lived there until his parents returned to Italy when he was three years old. He was raised in the small mountain village of Berzo San Fermo, just north of Bergamo, Italy. As a young boy in Berzo, Stefano grew up a shepherd boy herding “Alpina” brown cows in beautiful Alpine mountain pastures during the spring and summer months. It was in these mountains that Stefano’s passion for all animals blossomed. He was a lover of nature and all things big and small. At the age of 16, Stefano was given the opportunity to live the “American Dream” and was sponsored by his uncle Santo Cambianica to come and work at what was then the very small San Antonio Winery that Santo founded in 1917 located in the community of Lincoln Heights, the former center of the Italian community of Los Angeles. Uncle Santo had no children and mentored and nurtured Stefano like a son. Stefano’s deep faith in God, humanity, and kindness toward all people came from the examples set by his Uncle Santo.

manilaupmagazine.com

After the Second World War Stefano met his wife Maddalena on her family’s farm in Chino, California. It was love at first sight and they married in 1946, settling down to raise a family a few blocks away from the winery. Throughout their 73 years together, they raised three children (all of whom work at the winery), helped raise numerous grandchildren (many of whom work at the winery), and together have been the driving force behind the winery’s success. Their love for each other was beyond words and they were a great example of teamwork and commitment, always supporting each other’s decisions whether at home or at work.

Stefano was fondly referred to as Papa Steve. He always welcomed everyone with a smiling face, a glass of wine, and an amazing recollection of names, history, and a colorful story about his early days in Italy and the winery. His unmatched wit, preciseness, generosity, and charm instantly drew everyone to him. His warmth and kindness kept them coming back.

Stefano was an integral part of the success of the San Antonio Winery. His countless hours of hard work, love, and dedication with his lifelong love, Maddalena, is the reason for the winery’s prosperity today. Throughout their lifetime they witnessed their small neighborhood winery grow to two additional locations including Ontario, east of Los Angeles, and Paso Robles, where the Riboli family also owns five estate vineyards, including the Stefano Vineyard in his name, four in Monterey, and one in Napa. Stefano was also able to witness Wine Enthusiast Magazine name Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery the 2018 “American Winery of the Year”.

A dedicated family man, Stefano is survived by his wife Maddalena and their three children: Santo (Joan), Cathy (Nino), and Steve (Sindee), who run the winery today. He leaves behind many grandchildren: Anthony, Steve, Lisa, Michael, Jennifer, David, Dante, Blake, Christopher, and Alex. He is also survived by seven greatgrandchildren.

For decades, longtime patrons visited the winery just to see him. He loved spending every day at the place he called home, while making it feel like home for his loyal customers and his new ones; he always made time for everyone.

Stefano left an indelible mark on his family and his community that will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on forever in everyone’s hearts and in the soul of the winery and city he loved. As Stefano would always say, “Sempre Avanti”, just keep moving forward no matter what challenges life brings you. - The Riboli Family

One of the highlights that captured the imagination was “The Bride” wedding cake. Standing 68 inches tall, with 75 inches in diameter as its width, the cake was adorned with about 4,500 crystals,150 edible roses, 40 peonies, and 1200 florettes with hand-piped “embroidery”. At its base was 40kg of sponge cake, with 10 kilos of ganache filling covered with 80 kilos of homemade fondant. All in all, it took 200 kg of sugar and two weeks to make with three straight days of finishing. Opening the night is the Bernie Pasamba Orchestra Marriott Iloilo. The performance of Ballet Philippines signaled the main event as the ballerinas led everyone to the grand foyer where guests from Manila’s high society, local celebrities, and executives witnessed the bedazzled gowns of Leo Almodal, the illuminated laced pieces of Albert Andrada, the whimsical creations of Jun Escario, the celestial brides and grooms of Michael Leyva, the romantic silhouettes of Veluz, and the playful frocks and suits of Little Miss Lacey by Cor Sunglao-Kho. n

anila Gave A Warm “Benvenuto” to Italian Deputy Foreign Minister Manlio Di Stefano as the Two Countries Strengthen Further Relations.

Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Italy, Manlio di Stefano, visited the Philippines to further strengthen the relationship between Italy and the Philippines. The two countries have enjoyed a warm and cordial relationship since 1947after the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and General Relations in Rome. Since then, the Philippines and Italy have concluded on several agreements, including those pertaining to scientific and technical cooperation, investments, small and medium enterprises, and various transportation and communication initiatives. The visit by Undersecretary di Stefano marks the 72nd year of diplomatic relations and showed the speed at which the Philippines’ economy has risen due to and aided by the extent of trade between the two countries.

manilaupmagazine.com

But there are various areas of potential growth, as estimated by the Italian government. Under the Duterte administration, Italy sees Manila to hold incredible amounts of untapped potential in terms of infrastructure projects, machinery, beverages, pharmaceuticals, and in the automotive industry. The visit by Undersecretary di Stefano is expected to discern how Italy and the Philippines can help one another in realizing these potentials. This can be achieved by forming new areas of cooperation, especially in deepening the ties in the cultural sector and using Italian technologies to help modernize the Philippines agricultural sector and improve its productivity. It is exciting to see how the Philippines and Italy can continue to grow together in the future. The visit was also a celebration of the recent knighthood of Robert Coyiuto Jr., Chairman and CEO of the privately held Prudential Guarantee & Assurance, one of the largest nonlife insurance companies. n

Champagne Showers and Happy (Birthday) Hours

M

anila Up! Magazine’s August 2018 cover model Helsa Tooley recently celebrated her birthday the way any cover girl would; filled to the brim with finery in The Manila Hotel. Having lived in Sydney, Australia for the past 30 years, the worldly woman of the hour is no stranger to sipping on sophistication, which is likely why the setting of her celebration was none other than her favorite restaurant the Champagne Room. While the event attended by close friends was actually a belated birthday gathering, you could say she was ‘fashionably late’ seeing as Helsa celebrated her actual birthday in London, England. She toured the capital’s neighboring cities and suburbs before continuing onto Scotland.

manilaupmagazine.com

Helsa’s penchant for European splendor is likely why she chose the Champagne Room as the appropriate scene for her soiree. Its Old World interior décor and luxurious floor-toceiling surroundings presents a surprisingly relaxing atmosphere. Then again, with such an international affinity for travel it is no wonder that she considers elegant sofas and decadent chairs “cozy”. Accompanying her five course meal was the appropriate pairing of plentiful wine along with the serenade of an in-house singer and pianist. She and her guests enjoyed the soul-soothing sounds of classical music before the evening culminated with the cake course. With the well-wishing of friends imparting happiness and health on her, Helsa was left pondering what more could a cover girl possibly ask for on her special day? n

PHILIPPINE SENATOR RISA HONTIVEROS

P

hilippine Senator Risa Hontiveros recently led the wreath laying at the monument of Dr. Jose Rizal in Carson. She also spoke in a community forum about the sociopolitical situation in the Philippines. Many supporters of issues about women admire Senator Hontiveros. She is always in the frontline of women and family issues. She passed outstanding bills among them the reproductive health bill which provides access to family planning services. She has been organizing and fighting for important causes for a long time. She was in high school at St. Scholastica College in Manila when she joined the campaign against the Bataan Nuclear Plant. Risa graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in social sciences from the Ateneo Manila University.

ON THE BEAT by FE KOONS manilaupmagazine.com

Because of her work in the peace dialogue with the National Democratic Front and the Philippine government, she was nominated

for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005. Senator Hontiveros also expanded the maternity leave of working women. Another significant bill that the senator sponsored is the “Safe Streets and Public Spaces Act” or the “Bawal Bastos Law,” which seeks to impose stiffer penalties on a range of acts from catcalling, sexist slurs, stalking and cyber stalking. She explained that women can go to the police who will issue tickets to men who do sexist catcalls. Even in the office, Risa said that “even in the buses, jeepneys women are often the subject of sexist slurs. It is the time for women to be brave and teach these disrespectful men to behave.” Hontiveros said. Senator Hontiveros is also pushing for the passage of the antidiscrimination bill on the basis of Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity and Equality or SOGIE. The bill has been reintroduced to the present Congress. The Philippine Senate has a vanguard for Filipina women indeed! Thank you Senator Risa Hontiveros! n

WHAT IT LOOKS VS. HOW IT FEELS

What is the real foundation of happiness? Should we base it upon what our lives look like? Or should we center it on how we feel? In the past, I have made the mistake of delaying happiness until everything looked right in my life. I’ll be happy when I graduate, I’ll be contented if I can find the right partner, it would bring me a lot of joy if I possess this amount of money in my bank account. I have focused on what my life would look like if only I can derive from that event or finally get to the goal that I’ve been wanting to achieve. But.. I was wrong.

PROVERBS 31

I shouldn’t wait for everything to work out for me to feel happy, I figured. It will not happen. There’s no such thing as that. I should not focus on what my life would look “in the future” instead, I should focus on how I really feel, “right now”.

by Jhoanna B. de Guzman 82

manilaupmagazine.com

PROVERBS 31

In the past, I fixated my thinking about what I see and about how others see me. Let’s all admit it, people judge us based on what we have, what we do, where we live, who we know, how we dress or how many educational degrees we hold. But I realized that was a very shallow way to live. There’s more to life than that. When I started to concentrate on what I really felt, amazing things have happened. It gave me a whole new perspective and keeps my sanity in check. It is about being affectionate to a friend, having an instant connection to a stranger, feeling the depth of my parents love, receiving a heartfelt concern from someone, giving a contagious smile, embracing changes, enjoying quiet mornings, loving with all my heart and soul, and, how I make other people feel good about themselves, Learning how to feel requires us to dig deeper, it is something personal, it keeps us from the fear of failure, from excessively trying to please others and being caught in the cycle of trying to perform so others will accept us. I’m slowly trying to learn how to grasp the significance of learning how to feel rather than learning how to see. So my prayer now is that, more and more people will learn to recognize that there’s more to life than what we see, we should learn how to feel. And no matter what, may we get a sign that shows us that we’re on the right path and that things are flowing and moving in our favor. May the sign be evident, clear and direct. n manilaupmagazine.com

5 REASONS WOMEN STAY DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

D

id you know that approximately 15.5 million children are exposed to domestic violence every year and a current or former intimate partner kills three women each day? This is more than just a statistic to my family and myself. I counsel individuals every day who are or have been in abusive/violent relationships and my family lost my eldest sister Carmen Rivera to domestic violence over 20 years ago. If we are to truly help those that are in domestic violent relationships, it is imperative that we understand the psychology behind those who choose to stay in these relationships.

MENTAL WELLNESS by JANIE LACY 84

People who have not been in abusive situations find it very difficult to understand this level of dysfunction. Many times the victims are blamed for staying in this situation. In my sister’s case, she was no longer in the relationship with the man who took her life. In fact, she had a restraining order against him when she was murdered.

manilaupmagazine.com

MENTAL WELLNESS Below are a few of the many reasons why people stay in Abusive/violent relationships.

1. Dysfunctional Emotional Connection. Those who use power and control with their partners are often verbally, emotionally and physically abusive along with apologies, promises, and affectionate to their victims. This often confuses the victim and they can often start blaming themselves. 2. Toxic Shame. A victim deep down often feels that something is wrong with them rather than the behavior of their partner. This results in a tremendous amount of feelings of shame and embarrassment. This more often times than not, leads them to cope with denial of the reality of their situation.

4. Lack of Resources. Many victims are often dependent upon their abuser for lack of money and resources. This is also another way that the abuser can control their victim to believe that they have no other resources to support themselves or the children.

3. Safety Concerns. In many cases, the abuser has threatened deadly harm to the partner or to the children if the partner tries to leave him. This was the case with my sister Carmen, her murderer, up to three days before her death, reportedly stated that he was going to kill her (rather than her be with someone else).

5. Mental Health Disorders. Often times, the victim can suffer from depression and isolation, which makes it harder to make the necessary changes to get out of the abusive relationship. Many close friends or families have no idea or can suspect anything is wrong because the victim is often isolated from those who care about them.

It is important, that we create safe, nonjudgmental places where victims can gain the strength and clarity to learn that things can get better for them and that there is hope when they decide, no more. We also have to consider, like the case of my sister Carmen that the most lethal time in an abusive relationship is after they leave. More than 70% of domestic violence murders happen after the victim has gotten out. n Author: Janie Lacy LMHC, NCC, CSAT manilaupmagazine.com

FASO, a non-profit organization, provided string classes to the children, none of whom have played a violin before. The special evening’s guest performers also included the UST Singers Alumni, composed of former manilaupmagazine.com

members of the University of Santo Tomas’ award-winning mixed choral ensemble, and the Los Angeles Vocal Artists (LAVA), a mixed ensemble that has quickly earned recognition since it was formed in March 2018. A rousing highlight was the performance of Freddie Mercury’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” featuring the combined majestic voices of the UST Singers Alumni and LAVA performed with the 73-piece orchestra, amid the state-of-the-art acoustics of the hardwood-paneled Walt Disney Concert Hall’s main auditorium. Arranged by Orlando Dela Cruz, the medley consists of “Dito Ba?,” “Gaano Kadalas ang Minsan,” “Paano Ba ang Mangarap” and “Ngayon.” The FASO Kids and the orchestra performed a medley, arranged by Louie Ramos, FASO’s arrangerin-residence, of Filipino lullabies

from various regions of the Philippines, including Southern Tagalog (“Sa Ugoy ng Duyan”), Bicol (“Caturog Na, Nonoy”) and Visayas (“Ili-Ili Tulog Anay”). Also in the program was an “Overture of Philippine Folk Songs,” arranged by American composer and arranger Bernard Green, which is considered one of the best orchestra arrangements of Filipino folk songs. “Vocalises on Morricone,” arranged by Professor Fidel Calalang, Jr., was a musical ode to Ennio Morricone, the Italian composer of memorable scores for cinema and television. Saunder Choi’s orchestral arrangement of “Leron, Leron Sinta,” the timeless, beloved Philippine folk song, was also performed.
