Imagine an individual who watches the news daily. Based on the images being broadcasted and the stories being relayed, that individual is now inspired to do better in the world and be a better person for it. This person is looking forward to a career in political science; where they can be a public servant and in particular, bring education to those not privy to it.

The REO Brothers There is a distinctive band originally from Tacloban, Philippines called The REO Brothers. It consists of four extremely talented brothers, Ronjoseph, Ralph, Reno, and Raymart. The four brothers have the uncanny ability to give their homonymous renditions of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Bee Gees that are very much like the original group’s sounds from the instruments to the singing.

Metropolitan Fashion Week (Greek Mythology) In addition to the Metropolitan Fashion Awards, the Gala showcased a unique, exclusive one-of-a-kind runway fashion show directed by Vano Kimmel, featuring unique collections of fashion and costume designers Douglas Tapia, Erick Bendana, David Tupaz, hats by Arturo Rios. A special segment of Haute Couture and Avant Garde Masterpieces was also showcased, inspired by the Greek Mythology and designed by over 30 international fashion designers.

The hotel’s amenities were absolutely A-1; spacious room, speedy Wi-Fi internet connection, readily available USB ports – all conveniently peppered throughout the room. The room itself was impeccably tidy, with fresh linens being brought daily.
55 His Holiness Pope Francis to hold Apostolic Visit to the Kingdom of Thailand in November Fulfilling the promise he made to visit Thailand, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See in Thailand officially announced that His Holiness Pope Francis will go to Thailand in November. His Excellency Archbishop Paul Tschang InTam and His Eminence Cardinal Francis-Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanij said the visit will take place on 20-23 November as a “pilgrim of peace and to promote inter-religious dialogue”.

Aloha! Winter’s chill is coming upon us albeit a tad late in its arrival in some areas given the dramatic shift in our global climate. Our planet is in peril, yet there is a glimmer of hope that the human race shall prevail to help make our Earth, our home, whole once again. Not to the extent of regaining how it was, we can only envision its future brimming with possibilities to heal itself. We as harbingers of good news in publications, Manila Up! International and Exquisite magazines tie in with Manila Up! TV to deliver the message of what is positive that is happening in our world, that has a unifying effect. In this, our 4th Anniversary Special Edition we present a myriad of subjects within a kaleidoscope that includes the visit of Pope Francis to Thailand in late October as a “pilgrim of peace and to promote inter-religious dialogue”. On the opposite end of the spectrum we cover Jennifer Lopez at the Toronto International Film Festival. And then are the REO Brothers zoom into the musical field, by “making lemonade out of lemons”. Their story is one worth retelling.

Heading back to our motherland of the Philippines, where we are hosted at the Bluewater Maribago, with its amenities and nestled amidst the beauty of nature, the haven of rest and relaxation has found a balance to ensconce itself with the least impact upon the environment. From people and place, we move on to events with “Greek Mythology”, the Metropolitan Fashion Award Gala as the theme itself defines, it inspired aspiring fashion and costume designers to come up with Haute Couture and Avant Garde masterpieces. Over 30 international fashion designers presented their unique take on the ramp. So there you have it folks. Eclectic and electric. That’s how we roll at Manila Up! International. I
magine an individual who watches the news daily. Based on the images being broadcasted and the stories being relayed, that individual is now inspired to do better in the world and be a better person for it. This person is looking forward to a career in political science; where they can be a public servant and in particular, bring education to those not privy to it. Said person now has a platform, and has elected to bring that platform to the forefront by participating in a beauty pageant. Sounds like an all-too-familiar tale, does it not? What if it was revealed that the aforementioned individual likes skateboarding? Yes, you read that correctly – moreover, they are an avid creative writer. Not only that, they also take a keen interest in special effects makeup and

happen to be a huge Star Wars fan. While this sounds like the makings of a fictitious being, it is actually the very real life of Kayla Gonzaga Sosin. As a freshman in college, she is breaking the mold at just eighteen years old. Kayla is a Political Science major at the University of California, Riverside. Born to a Filipina mother and Caucasian father, she aspires to one day work in a foreign embassy. And just like any good Filipino-American dutiful daughter, she participated in her first large scale production pageant earlier this year at the behest of her mother. In July, Kayla was crowned Miss Continental Philippines Teen USA 1st Princess in the Miss World Philippines USA/CAN; the official Fil-Am rep to Miss World Philippines. While she clearly performed well, previously the teen was adamant about “not being the most pageant-type person”.

While Kayla has always been a big fan of the entertainment industry, she never felt as though pageantry was for her. In fact it was her mother – who at the same age was also a title holder – that pleaded with her to consider it. The prospect of taking on the challenge of something new was an appealing one, so with the support and experience of her mother to guide her, she relented. She looked at the ordeal as a learning opportunity, and when she at-first wavered, her mother was there to remind her to just have fun. The appeal of pageantry could very well have stemmed from Kayla’s inherent philanthropic tendencies given the freshman is a member of UCR’s Katipunan Pilipino Student Organization, whose mission is to raise awareness of Fil-Am culture among the faculty and student body. She is also part of the Pi Beta Phi sorority, participating in their Read > Lead > Achieve initiative. With her sisters she reads to disadvantaged youth who in turn read to them, ultimately ameliorating their own reading abilities. She took this mantra with her on a recent trip to the Philippines where she provided meals to 500 school children in impoverished areas only to be met with requests for books by the school’s principal. “As a college student in America I have ALL of the opportunities in the world” she explains, “but these young children don’t have as many”. Kayla has certainly taken advantage of the opportunities presented to her, always striving to acquire a new skill or hone an existing one. While still in high school, her creative writing garnered her screenwriting awards. In a state-

wide Public Service Announcement competition, one regarding “Go Safely California” won 2nd place, while another about “Mental Health Matters” took home 1st. She has also won cash prizes for her works, which she lightheartedly attributes to being her high school income. For someone so young to be committed to curating her own future, it is only befitting that she would want to reach across the proverbial financial and cultural gaps to unite people around globe. The worldly teen chose political science as a clear path to international law. What other 18-year-old watches the news and wonders about the correlation between riots in Hong Kong and their effects on American 401(k)s? Kayla possesses a selfproclaimed heightened awareness of what is happening in the world and how we are all connected. “Everyone is NOT that different” she exclaims. Her venture into international relations has also forced her to work on her public speaking. While she has never been one to lack in confidence, what her studies and pageantry have provided for her is an arena wherein she can be more comfortable articulating her mindset. Prior to this she was contented being “in the background” as she describes it, though now she is able to voice her opinions. Not just in English either – with an Asian mom, white dad, and Hispanic nanny, Kayla is actually fluent in Spanish (she is working on her Tagalog though; konti lang!). When she is not conceivably trying to solve the world’s problems, the young adult truly does enjoy activities more typical of someone
in their late teens. During the phone interview for this very article she was nursing a fractured foot – not due to skateboarding – but due to uneven ground while walking as she elected not to skate over it. “I’m a bit clumsy” admits the pageant queen. She also enjoys watching Star Wars (something acquired from her dad), playing video games, and doing SFX makeup. “I’m a creative person, so this is just another canvas for me. There are so many possibilities with makeup” Kayla says, before sharing that throughout this year’s Halloweek she was a werewolf as well as a zombie. So what lies in store for the tomboyish teen turned beauty queen? Aside from bringing more books to the Philippines, Kayla does not want to be set on one thing; she is far too ambitious for that. “Everything I have time for and can do, I want to keep doing. I don’t want to take where I am for granted”. When asked about time management, she simply replied “there’s so much going on”, yet she feels confident, surrounds herself with likeminded successful friends, and thereby feels accomplished just by being in there presence. It pushes her; “Being around talented people has given me the confidence to try new things. Because college has so many new things, and opportunities!” Her excitement is infectious, as is her genuine disposition. And while she selfadmittedly has more femininity to find within herself, there is plenty that lies ahead in her already accolade-heavy journey. This title holder serves as a beacon to so many, and the world cannot wait to watch her shine brighter. n

The Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto was brimming from wall to wall with Hollywood A-listers who flew in to celebrate film, the start of the awards season, colleagues and their latest films. Jennifer Lopez, who was the star of the box-office hit “Hustlers” walked in with her entourage of black-suited men in sunglasses. J. Lo walked late into the party but that’s how a diva walks into a party --- fashionably late. She had photos with some fans and the paparazzi was all over her as well. Before J. Lo, co-star Constance Wu and “The Farewell” director Lulu Wang walked in without any fanfare and were very low profile. The only one who almost matched J. Lo’s dramatic entrance was comedian Eddie Murphy who arrived with his own entourage dressed in black leather jackets. Eddie was friendly

and smiled for photos. He was also promoting his comeback movie, “Dolemite is My Name” which debuts at TIFF. Eddie Redmayne took off his jacket and settled wearing his white longsleeved shirt throughout the night since it was already getting warmer in the packed ballroom what with all the guests and celebrities increasing in number as the night passed. Jamie Foxx and Michael B. Jordan, who are both in “Just Mercy,” and Ansel Elgort, who is starring in “The Goldfinch” movie with Nicole Kidman, were hanging out together near the Dior photo booth where strings of red hearts dangled from the top of the booth. At first the gang had serious poses in the booth, then they started clowning around. We also caught Ansel, wearing an all-white ensemble, jump on a pillow and started dancing.
Adam Driver, who is featured in “Marriage Story” with Scarlett Johansson was catching up with Allison Janney, who is starring in the film “Bad Education.” Matthew Rhys, who portrays a journalist in the Tom Hanks-starring movie about the popular Mister Rogers bio film, “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” walked in with his beautiful wife and former “The Americans” co-star Keri Russell. Edward Norton, the actor-writerdirector of “Motherless Brooklyn,” was huddled in a corner talking to press and friends. Gary Oldman, of “The Laundromat” arrived with his wife art curator, Gisele Schmidt. Dakota Johnson was hanging out with dad Don Johnson and former stepdad, Antonio Banderas (who had the movie “Pain and Glory” at TIFF). ON AND OFF THE RED CARPET Renee Zellweger, star of the Judy Garland biopic “Judy”, held court in one corner of the room in a smart symmetrically-designed jumpsuit. Definitely in the running for “Best Actress” for her performance in this movie, Renee simply blushed and said “Thank you” softly when we complimented her. Still at the star-studded event at the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto attended by Hollywood stars flying in to showcase their respective movies, mingle and network with their colleagues and other filmmakers were: Jon Hamm, Bryce Dallas Howard, Ray Liotta, Caitriona Balfe, Chris Evans, Chris Cooper, Alex Rodriguez, Isabelle Huppert, Kerry Washington, Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Julia Stiles, Willem Dafoe, Wesley Snipes, among many others. Guests mixed and mingled in the Aria ballroom while enjoying lemon chicken piccata, chutney mint samosas and seared tuna on crispy rice. Hollywood’s biggest names were immersed in an elegant, contemporary environment with intimate gathering areas. Warm metals and earth-toned furnishings were punctuated by a cascading, bronze architectural installation. It lent as a focal point to the dramatically scaled room. As the evening was underway, guests continued to laugh and dance while enjoying champagne and an assortment of decadent desserts including lemon tartlets, madeleines, chocolate truffles and more.

Earlier in the day, the HFPA announced the winners of our 2020 Residency Program in partnership with Film Independent. HFPA Chairman of the Board, Meher Tatna, presented the award. For the second year in a row, the HFPA and Film Independent will host a threeweek program geared at emerging and midcareer filmmakers selected from the Orizzonti section of the Venice International Film Festival and the TIFF Filmmaker Lab. This year’s winners were Charles Williams (All These Creatures) from Australia, Chema Garcia (Misterio) from Spain, and Karen Chapman (Measure) from Canada. The winners will travel to Los Angeles in January 2020 to participate in the Film Independent Residency, featuring an intensive schedule of sessions focusing on both the business and creative aspects of film, with multiple networking opportunities, cultural engagement activities, workshops, field trips, master classes, one-on-one mentoring, and an opportunity to attend the official HFPA Golden Globe® Awards Viewing Party. In addition, the program includes public screenings of select Fellows’ films at Film Independent’s screening room to share the Fellows’ work with industry professionals and the broader film community. The event was produced by Brilliant Consulting and was presented by Dior and the Four Seasons Hotel Toronto. n

here is a distinctive band originally from Tacloban, Philippines called The REO Brothers. It consists of four extremely talented brothers, Ronjoseph, Ralph, Reno, and Raymart. The four brothers have the uncanny ability to give their homonymous renditions of the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and the Bee Gees that are very much like the original group’s sounds from the instruments to the singing. Yes, these boys can do other famous bands as well and in perfect pitch. However, before I get into their accomplishments, it is necessary to tell you some history of their humble beginnings.
You might say, the band started when Ronjoseph put together a makeshift set of drums. “Necessity is the mother of invention”, so Ronjoseph crafted his drums, from tin cans to chip bags into a set of drums. He even learned to play them on his own. Next he mastered the guitar, then went on to teach his brothers how to play. Incidentally, they were inspired by their father, Reynaldo Otic, and his love of 50’s to 80’s music that he listened to constantly. As the band developed, Ronjosept became the lead singer and acoustic guitar player, Ralph on base and vocals, Raymart on rhythm and vocals, and Reno on drums and vocals. So, from the makeshift drums to a short span of four years they manilaupmagazine.com
FROM HOLLYWOOD TO ASIA were actually playing gigs. The band began to play at birthday parties and other events around Tacloban City. The group was happy, they were making money, enough to get by but then unfortunately or fortunately, their arrangements were literally blown away. Typhoon Yolanda blew into Tacloban City on November 8, 2013, causing great destruction of buildings, trees, automobiles, and flooding away many places. The devastation caused by the storm left the Ortic family pretty much without funds. It was the most powerful cyclone to ever hit land. As in life, just as one door closes another door opens. Therefore when Raymart could, he communicated with other family members in Manila and the sorrowful trek out of Tacloban began. After a Spartan level travel subsistence, the vagabond of travelers arrived in Manila after two days with only their guitars, and some clothes. This drastic change in geography actually gave rise to new opportunities for the REO Brothers.
In addition, after only three months, they were back in the United Kingdom where they played at the Ten Foundation in Belfast, Northern Ireland and again at the Cavern Club in Liverpool. Furthermore, the brothers played at the Benwell and Springback Club, and the Dome in London by November of 2014. The REO Brothers have been well received virtually everywhere they played, from the Philippines, to New York and California in the United States, Japan, and The United Kingdom. (Interview with REO Brothers Band by Robert D. Womack:) Robert: Have you four been back to Tacloban since Yolanda?
REO Brothers: Every year we do visit our hometown and sometimes we get invited to do gigs and perform for special events there. Our first visit after Yolanda was in Dec. 22, 2013 when Willy Revillame a TV Host/Personality, invited us to join him in his Variety Show, “WOWOWIN”, by giving hopes and smiles to our devastated province mates. Robert: Don’t you miss your friends there Tacloban? REO Brothers: Yes we do. Especially those friends who have been part of our early journey when we were just starting out. We always try to reconnect with our mentor, Sir Bia, and his friend/bandmate, Sir Lito, who made a huge contribution in

accomplishments escalated after reaching Manila. From Madison Square Garden for a “Pinoy Relief Benefit” to Southern California in Historic Filipino Town. Then onward, in June 2014 the REO Brothers traveled to Tokyo, Japan to play for the Philippine Assistance Group. This event in Japan was called “Damo Nga Salamat” or “Thank you very much”. Moreover, our travelers went to the Cavern Club, in Liverpool, England where the original Beatles started their illustrious, long standing career. The REO Brothers played in their three day tour of the UK, Bournbrook, Selly Oak Social Club in Birmingham, and at Northumberland Theater in London.

our early years as a struggling band. They taught us how to play the music of the 60’s and how it should be played and sung. Additionally, our neighbor in Tacloban named, Mano Roger, who has played a major role in our formative years as a group. We were able to play on actual instruments when he lent us his own musical instruments to practice on. For that, we are so grateful to him. Robert: Are any of you four married or planning marriage? REO Brothers: Yes, RJ, Lead Guitarist, is happily married and has 2 children with his wife Mary Jane. Robert: What do fans like most in your music, your Beatles, Beach Boys, of Bee Gees renditions? REO Brothers: Most of our fans are Beatles fans as well. Fortunately for us, some of them also love our covers from The Bee Gees and The Beach Boys. Robert: How did you discover your fondness for the Beatles?

REO Brothers: We discovered the Beatles when our father bought a CD of them, we listened to it and tried to learn some songs. We still remember the first song, it was, “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” back in 2008. Robert: Are you planning a tour in California soon? REO Brothers: Yes, we have a tentative Gig/ US Tour next year in April 2020. Robert: We will want to make sure we see you in California. It will be a nice touch to interview you on “Manila Up! TV Show”. Robert: Would you consider doing something with Marcello Pomoy as he is a notable singing celebrity there in the Philippines? REO Brothers: It would be a good advantage for our band to engage with any artist that will help our professional growth. We are more than willing to take part in any collaborative work to further enhance our musical skills. Exposure to other musical genres and styles
will enable us to learn more about other works too. Robert: Have you met the remaining two Beatles, Paul and Ringo? REO Brothers: Sadly, we haven’t met the remaining Beatles yet. We wish someday to witness them perform live and that would be one of the most memorable moments of our lives. But right now we’re just enjoying video clips from YouTube. Robert: Were you excited to be playing in the Cavern Club where the Beatles started? REO Brothers: Yes of course. We were very excited upon knowing that we’ll be performing at The Cavern Club in Liverpool, UK. It has been a dream come true. We never imagined this will ever happen even in our wildest dreams: to be able to play at that iconic Cavern Club. It was such a great irreplaceable experience. Robert: Have you been offered any movie rolls?

FROM HOLLYWOOD TO ASIA REO Brothers: So far, no movie offers yet (hahaha). The movie industry will be a good avenue for the band’s exposure. But we think acting is not one of our fortes. Robert: What band groups interest you now, like Country Western for instance? REO Brothers: 10 years ago we’ve followed some bands like MCR ( My Chemical Romance) Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Maroon 5, etc. As of now, we have been listening to Bruno Mars with his band. Robert: Would you rather be in Tacloban or do you like Manila? REO Brothers: There’s no place like home. In terms of practicality, Manila is a place to live with lots of opportunities and most of our clients
and gigs are here. But then again, we still do love to visit our hometown. Home is where the heart is.
Robert: Of the places you have traveled, what is your favorite and why?
Robert: How long did you stay in New York when you did Madison Square Garden?
REO Brothers: It’s a tie between Japan and The UK (hehehe). Japan is a very interesting place. It’s very pleasant, from its people to its places. Of course the UK, a natural favorite since The Beatles and other great bands originated from there, we love how diverse the place is.
REO Brothers: We stayed there for 5 days. The US was our first trip abroad, we landed in NYC last March 2014 and performed at The Madison Square Garden for the “Pinoy Relief Show”. Robert: Did you hurry to hop on a plane for Glendale after NYC to head out to California? REO Brothers: After the performance in NYC we did go to California and attended some benefit concerts for our province mates in the Philippines.
Robert: Where have you felt most welcome in your travels? REO Brothers: We felt the most welcoming arms in the UK. As a matter of fact, we’ve been there 4 times already. We love the response of the people when we had our UK Tour last 2014-2015. The best highlight was of how thrilled we were to perform at The Cavern Club and played for the English people. It was so heartwarming especially so because they are hard core Beatles fans. Robert: Thank you for answering my questions and taking the time to communicate with me. GLASS HALF FIL In celebration of Filipino American History Month here in the States and to slide into the lengthy festive season in the Philippines, GMA Pinoy TV is bringing the holiday spirit from back home to its Kapuso abroad by putting on a concert at the Arcadia Performing Arts Center in Los Angeles, California on October 19th 2019. Director Paolo Valenciano was brought onboard this endeavor; his first time directing a concert of this caliber. Coming back to the original mindset of the stars, Boy Abunda-managed actress Ai-Ai delas Alas is no stranger to a varied career spanning different mediums and styles. She is always one to delight audiences by bringing her best devious dance numbers and devilish repartee. Given how responsive her fans are, when asked what her performances mean to her personally she responded that they always pose a welcomed challenge. She always

wants to take the audiences’ perspective into consideration, and deliver a different show each time. Whether it is a new theme or ‘stage antics’ as she calls them, she wants to ensure that she & the show never become stagnant.

So what is his hardest role to date – that of a singer, actor, or husband? Despite the newlywed being apart from his bride, he still uses her as inspiration during his onstage delivery and states he is “enjoying himself as a husband”. For him the easiest roles are those where he is essentially himself, whether singing, hosting, or judging. Acting is where he where he would

feel important, as she feels an immense amount of gratitude given she would not be as elevated without her kababayans. “I still owe a lot to my birth country, so I make it a point to go back and forth” she concludes. Thus far these responses have been carefully curated by those well-versed in media interviews. What about The Clash’s newest addition to celebrity status? With her career being a mere two years old, Golden Cañedo has to handle public recognition and press obligations. How does the now 17-year-old stay grounded? Her response is a far cry from the shy girl one would expect to answer: “I keep humble kasi I’m so happy po”. The fact that she gets to take part in this concert and perform alongside her TV idols is such a gift. “I’m here now” she reminds herself, as she still cannot believe that her dreams have come true. Those of us stateside have been looking forward to seeing what Golden, and the three esteemed panel of judges Ai-Ai, Christian, and Lani bring to the Arcadia Performing Arts Center stage. Chairman of CCP and Chairman of Ballet Philippines 50th Anniversary Gala Margie Moran Floirendo, together with Ballet Philippines Vice-Chairman Maan Hontiveros presented the specially-crafted ballet-inspired Ramon Orlina glass sculpture “On Pointe” which means a dancer’s pointed shoe. Sculpted on 4 sides of blue glass, the artwork went to Edna Vida, Denisa Reyes, Agnes Locsin, Cecile Sicangco, Alden Lugnasin, and Paul Alexander Morales. A special clear glass art piece was given to its first and current Artistic Director, National Artist for Dance, Alice Reyes. The stage was set for a performance unlike any other. Featuring an exclusive 50-piece collection by iconic fashion designer Michael Cinco it was inspired by Tchaikovsky’s hauntingly soaring scoring of Swan Lake. It melded with a visually stunning performance of Ballet Philippines led by its principal dancers Denise Parungao, Biag Gaongen and Jessa Tangalin, staged by Alden Lugnasin. O`AHU known as “The Gathering Place”, is the
third-largest of the Hawaiian Islands. It is home to roughly one million people, about two-thirds of the population of the state. The capital, Honolulu, is on O`ahu’s southeast coast. Including small associated islands such as Ford Island and the islands in Kāne`ohe Bay and off the eastern (windward) coast, its area is 596.7 square miles (1,545.4 km2), making it the 20thlargest island in the United States. The island has been inhabited since at least the 3rd century A.D.[6] The 304-year-old Kingdom of O`ahu was once ruled by the most ancient Ali`i in all of the Hawaiian Islands. The first great king of O`ahu was Ma`ilikūkahi, the lawmaker, who was followed by many generations of monarchs. Kuali`i was the first of the warlike kings and so were his sons. In 1773, the throne fell upon Kahahana, the son of Elani of Ewa. In 1783, Kahekili II, King of Maui, conquered O`ahu and deposed the reigning family and then made his son, Kalanikūpule, king of O`ahu. HANAUMA NAMED BEST U.S. BEACH
Hanauma Bay was named the best beach in the United States in the 14th annual rankings of American beaches from Stephen Leatherman, the Florida environmental scientist known as “Dr. Beach”. In addition to the spectacular snorkeling and smooth, white coral sand at the “phenomenal” beach, set in a volcanic cone, Dr. Beach praised Hanauma Bay’s environmental management. Smoking is now banned, access is monitored to prevent overcrowding--a problem given its proximity to Waikiki. And, visitors have to watch a 9-minute-long educational video at the Hanauma Bay Marine Education Center before entering the beach. Approximately 650 U.S. beaches and shore areas are ranked each year, with previous winners excluded from the survey. Beaches are rated on 50 criteria that includes water temperature, water and sand quality, beach management, litter control and available facilities. Hanauma Bay was designated a Marine Life Conservation District in 1967 and a City and County Park in 1978. Hanauma Bay is also the romantic location of Elvis Presley’s beach boy days in the film Blue Hawaii. John Wayne and Lee Marvin’s film Donovan’s Reef was also filmed at Hanauma Bay. Hanauma Bay is a great place to snorkel or scuba dive in Hawaii.

The theme of this event that carries on today was “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future.” “As we look to the future, we each have an opportunity and a personal responsibility to invest in and commit to inspiring the leaders of tomorrow, using history to help empower choices that negate fateful outcomes,” said Admiral Thomas Fargo in a statement. The Hawaiian name for Pearl Harbor was Puuloa (Iong hill). Later named Pearl Harbor for the pearl oysters that were once harvested from the waters, the natural harbor is the largest in Hawaii.Ulu (breadfruit) was said to be brought here from Samoa.

The Byodo-In Temple was built in the 1960’s to commemorate the
100th anniversary of the arrival of the first Japanese immigrant workers in Hawaii who came to work in the sugar plantation fields. It is a replica of the 950-year-old Byodoin Temple located in Uji, Japan on the southern outskirts of Kyoto. As you cross the wooden bridge to enter the temple grounds you will surely get the feeling that you are traveling to a place far different than anywhere else in Hawaii. This bridge was used for the proposal scene with Sun and Jin in the first season of “Lost” in the episode ‘House of the Rising Sun’. A short walk from the bridge will take you to a five-foot, three-ton brass Peace Bell located on your left. This large bell can be heard throughout Kahalu`u when rung. Ringing the bell will purify the mind from evil spirits and temptation. It is said that ringing this bell will bring you happiness, blessings, and a long life. It is customarily rung before entering the temple.n

AN INTERVIEW WITH SYLVIA ZAMORA STREET PHOTOGRAPHER OUR PINOY PRIDE IN NYC

I
n the late 90’s, the male-dominated film and advertising industry of the Philippines recognized Sylvia Zamora as the First Female Camera Person in Animation and eventually the First Female Director of Photography (Cinematography) in the country. Her trailblazing attitude and commitment to excellence garnered her the Best in Cinematography for Public National Awareness TV Commercials in her first year of training. Her success in this field paved the way for other females to pursue a career in cinematography. When she moved to New York City 14 years ago, the energy and diversity of the city ignited her passion for Street Photography. After purchasing her iPhone X last year, Sylvia is once again challenging the myth that only DSLR photos are worthy for entries to competitions. As a street photographer/artist, she is one of social media’s shining stars in Facebook photography groups and Instagram street photography hubs. She competes head on with DSLR entries and wins competitions, frequently gets featured in group covers and just recently, a winner of the Master Class Competition for International Amateur Street Photography. After racking up awards practically on a daily basis, her followers/ fans no longer apologize for posting “just an iphone or mobile photo”.

As a Psych major at heart, I was excited to be able to get to know the woman behind the lens. I wanted to know what, why and how she is able to pack a dramatic and emotional punch in every cell phone image she captures. As a photographer, I feel very privileged to have someone like Sylvia Zamora to inspire me in my own photographic journey. Audrey Dattalo: Which of your photo would you consider represents you as an artist the most? Why? Sylvia Zamora: What would represent me the most is... DRAMATIC LIGHTING. As a Cinematographer, I loved lighting with ONE LIGHT SOURCE, ONE KEY LIGHT, just like the photo below. That one key light will give me the very strong highlights I want and let the rest of the ambient light bounce back to my subject’s face. Any nook and cranny light would flow to, in its own natural way, I let the shadows breath a life of their own, I let black go black and let the rest blend in and complete the drama. AD: Do you consider yourself more of a cerebral or visceral photographer? SZ: Definitely Visceral! Doing Street Photography is totally about what’s in your gut feeling, your emotions, your instinct and your vision. You look, you pause, you wish, you pray and almost expect what may transpire right in front of your very eyes. Doing Street for so

many years now, one begets that gut feeling, almost anticipating and know that everything happens in a split second. Somehow, someway... I feel, that the magic moment is about happen. AD: Every photographer has his/her holy grail. What type of subject or scene has eluded you in your photography so far? SZ: Hmmmnnnnn, this is not an easy question when doing Street is almost always a flash of the moment incident, just like doing photo journalism or documentary photography, what happens right in front of your very eyes is what one captures. BUT, to answer that question... I wish I were here during the 9-11 tragedy or the like scenario. To be in the epicenter of a SUPER INTENSE, emotional, dramatic setting where one is able to capture grief, shock, sadness, madness, tears, disbelief, manic confusion, FEAR, life & death in the RAW!!!! It may seem morbid that I dream of this milieu but street photographs of past wars, as a child flipping through LIFE magazine, I was totally engrossed and in awe of seeing those raw emotions captured on black & white grainy prints. I would stare at people’s faces, flip each page over and over and over again, I would look at people in the background and “feel” what they’re feeling, I can actually “touch” fear in the photos I were staring at, I can
feel the tremors of devastation, feel their wet faces filled with tears, feel their pain & sorrow with loss of their loved ones, like I’m actually transported inside the photograph and becoming a part of that war... THIS scenario is my utmost holy grail in photography. It has eluded me yes, but I also say, thank God it has... AD: Was your street photography style influenced by other artists? Who would you say has helped shaped or influenced your style the most? SZ: I always had Annie Liebowitz as my idol when I started photography and specialized in Portraiture. But now, doing Street is a whole new world from the glamour shots I started off with. Now, because of your question #3, you have unearthed the REAL reason why I love Street! You have awoken the subconscious brain of that little 8 year old child who had spent hundreds of hours staring, studying, feeling, ogling, totally mesmerized and tantalized with all those black and white images in Life Magazine and National Geographic of wartime street photos... thus I would say, Nick Ut, Nguyen Ngoc Loan to say a few, as my idols of Street. I certainly do not have their style in my photos, but their photos influenced me to shoot Street, to shoot life, to tell a story, to capture moments, to capture feelings, to focus on people’s eyes and feel what’s inside of their heads,

to be where humanity is and be a part of their lives, to capture monumental and insignificant moments as it happens right before my very eyes. AD: Before you click your shutter, what did you look for and what did your eyes finally see behind the lens? SZ: First thing I always see is the cinematic beauty of a shot. My background in being a Director of Photography (Cinematographer) has trained me good on this. LIGHTING is the first impression that would make me stop for a photo. When it’s impressive at first glance, the surrounding will be my second factor, which is the presence of people or a person. Minimalism in my photos is almost always a signature of mine. A single person is usually what makes it cinematic because it’s clean, artistic and simple, works best for an impressive artistic shot. Focus on one’s photograph is easier too when there is no clutter in the background. I walk by, then walk back because I saw something beautiful in my head. It takes a second or two for my brain to digest the vision, the feet are faster than my brain thus I walk by and walk back is almost always what happens. What I see in the lens, the brain and the eyes saw it first, clicking away is just an act of putting it all together into film. 44
AD: If money where no object, please describe your ultimate setting for street photography. SZ: I’d go to war torn cities and document the devastation and the plight of the city and its people. I’d go to where the “natives” of a town live and document their everyday lives. I’d go to Vietnam, Africa, China, Egypt, Syria, India, Turkey, Afghanistan, to name a few. I want to be where no one has ever been to shoot, I’d go to every nook & cranny of small towns and remote areas. To shoot life in the raw in war torn cities of the world is the ultimate setting for me. AD: I noticed you tend to post black and white more often than colored photos. Why? SZ: I see more drama in B&W than I do in Color. There is more challenge in presenting an awesome image in B&W than there is in Color. You think more. You study the photograph deeper. You nitpick on details more. You look for highlights, is there enough light, shadows and contrast and ask yourself, is the photo “alive” enough? Is it vibrant enough? Is it vivid enough? Is it fascinating or dull? Are the blacks black enough or too deep? Are the grays too overpowering or do the whites look
like grays? Is the white too white that it kills half the image? Is it balanced or not? For me, a B&W photo is like a study of a painting on canvas, where you try to analyze the meaning and the message of an artist. Color is natural, it’s what every single human being lucky enough to be born with the gift of sight, sees. It’s beautiful yes, but not enough drama for me. For someone to say your B&W photo is beautiful is much more satisfying than having the same comment on a color photograph of mine because the road to doing it right in B&W is a much harder trek than doing it right in Color. AD: As I scrolled down your gallery on Instagram, I noticed a shift in your photos this year, more energetic subjects. Plus, you’ve seemed to have narrowed the distance between you and your subjects. Why do you think this year’s work is subtly different? SZ: A very observant comment you have here, because you’re absolutely right. I’ve gone more “personal” this year. Going as minimalistic and as simple as I can. Doing a wide shot in Street is too busy for me. If you notice, I try my very best to exclude as much busy street background on my pictures now, or most specially, too many people! It’s too distracting. I want to focus more on the message of my photographs, the clarity of emotions and that split second once in a lifetime click of a capture in close up or half body shots. It should show more the story of human interest, more of feelings, more of character, more the story of my unknown subject - the clarity in his eyes and the lines of his face, I ask myself “what are you going through today?” “what’s on your mind?” I want to focus more on the human interaction of people on people, which is what’s most important for me in doing street... thus, this year has emboldened me to go closer, to be more intimate, to invade their personal space more and be daring enough to get caught (a lot of times now! Lol), to move in tighter, to see their eyes, to see their soul, to see their heart. AD: How much of your street photography uses your broad experience in advertising and animation? SZ: Hhmmmnnnnn I don’t think doing street has any relation in Animation, mainly because I was not an Animator but a Camera Person. An Animator would be a great Street manilaupmagazine.com
FEATURE Photographer as they literally create stories, something from nothing but a blank sheet of white paper. A camera person in Animation is but a robot whose movements are controlled by the worksheet in front of us. In advertising, it would be the intense discipline and focus on detail which is exactly what I implement on all my photos. Lighting comes from my style of cinematography as Director of Photography. AD: NYC is divided into neighborhood sections, each with their own distinct personalities. Which area is your favorite to photograph and why? SZ: Definitely the Diamond District (which is 80% of my photos) is number one on my list, where the Hasidic Jews are predominantly the most interesting personalities in the street. I find so much challenge shooting them as they hate being photographed! The more they say NO, the more I do. The more they get annoyed with me, the more photos I take of them. I might practically end up having enough photos for a book compilation of this YENTL series and have it printed, much to their dismay... The next sections are: Chelsea, East Village, SoHo where you see the most colorful of personalities! I call them the no-care-in- the-world people, where they dress up like no other in the world, or rather, more out of this world, and they love it! A happy, crazy and so much in-love peoples of New York. I have yet to spend more time in Chinatown, the hustle and bustle of underground shopping. The busiest street of NYC (next to Times Square where you’ll never see me shoot) in terms of volume, action and movement... this is my next project-to-be. AD: I know you photograph almost every day but which season or time of year would you consider your most creative? Why? SZ: SUMMER is my most favorite time of year to shoot because the sun is shining at its brightest thus, I always have light in the most intense of strength and shadows in super high contrast and just the perfect mix of gradient gray to make it FUNtastic! That silver lining highlights on everything, on faces, clothes, hats, shoulders, legs, shoulders...EVERYWHERE! Simply beautiful! WINTER is all about gray, the most challenging season of all and yet, I find myself longing for a blizzard because it gives me the texture and drama, on people and buildings combined. The snow emits such whiteness that it acts as my bounce light for faces on a very bleary, gloomy day. FALL is absolutely about Landscape photography where nature and nature alone are so stunning, one can sometimes stand frozen in place because you are in awe of the beauty of mother earth. Such vibrant orange colors of trees and leaves all over your surroundings, wherever your eyes go, as far as your eyes could see. SPRING is interesting too because from the dreadful winter weather, you see the beginnings of green come alive from very dark, barren and dead trees. AD: What type of street photography would you consider cliché? SZ: Hhmmnnnnn... a very interesting question when for me, street photography has a very general and broad definition. General because it’s purely and simply candid street activities, indoor or outdoor, with or without people... Broad at the same time because it could also be landscape in nature, portraiture, or abstract art. BUT, what’s cliché is when some people consider Street Photography MUST ONLY include people! That definition is VERY old school, very boxed in and very unimaginative! manilaupmagazine.com

AD: Is there a type of photography that you wish would go away? SZ: Hahahahahaha this is funny because I don’t think there’s even a correct answer to this! But, just for the heck of it, as my OWN personal opinion... I would say, Still Life and Product Shoots? Interesting yet boring at the same time. I say this because it’s a controlled environment where everything is planned, fixed, arranged, cleaned, redone when wrong, reshoot to make it even more right. Too rigid, too many rules, too exact, where perfection is a must but then, in whose eyes will it ever be perfect? Definitely not my cup of tea, even if I did this for about 4 years in an Advertising Agency... it’s definitely not something I would ever go back doing again. But then again, it’ll never go away because this is where the money is for photography, Advertising, the cash register for all photographers. Now I know why I’ll never be rich in photography, lol.... AD: What in your opinion makes for a cool street photo? SZ: Action, drama, lighting, extreme angle and an awesome story. Combine all these in ONE single photo would be my most uber cool street capture! And then again, this is really a tough question. I see hundreds of street photos in FB & Instagram on a daily basis and yet, there are hundreds I see having that WOW factor. What is it in them that makes it awesome? I don’t know, it’s difficult to categorize it in words or in its technical aspect, it has a life of its own, like the photograph is surreal, unusual, out of this world. These would be my own personal basis of what a cool street photo would be when seeing it in other photographers captures. AD: Was there ever a time when you felt your artistic muse has left you? What did you have to do to get her back? SZ: Oh yes it has happened, not once, not twice, not thrice but several times in my lifetime. It can happen today 46
or tomorrow or right this very moment! In the beginning as a newbie, I panicked! Then in time, through the years, I’ve just learned to just let it be. It comes back no matter what. It even took years for it to come back to me! Now, after all these years, I know... When photography is inside of your heart and soul, Ms. Artistic Muse will always be awaken when she decides to sleep every so often in my life, like a bear in hibernation. Then! She comes back with a vengeance of a hungry animal ready to devour the world. AD: Thank you so much Sylvia. Looking forward to seeing more of your works in an exhibit sometime soon, right? unforgettable experience; where I was privy to luxury and given special treatment befitting of a VIP member. After a Palawan island-hopping excursion, we sought to bask in the beauty that is the first class experience of this resort in Cebu. Upon our arrival at the Mactan Airport, we were warmly received by the welcome staff and whisked away via private van to Bluewater Maribago. The resort was suitably located only 15-20 minutes away from the airport, making for a quick and comfortable ride. The reception area had a native flavor filled with hospitable faces who welcomed us to their

facilities. We checked into our stay of 4 days and 3 nights. The hotel’s amenities were absolutely A-1; spacious room, speedy Wi-Fi internet connection, readily available USB ports – all conveniently peppered throughout the room. The room itself was impeccably tidy, with fresh linens being brought daily. We quickly dropped our belongings and made a beeline for the beach. The private white sand beachfront was adorned with a giant chessboard and hammocks, which we made swift use of; relishing as our suntanned skin was lapped by the wind, and we napped. Feeling refreshed from this siesta, we felt reinvigorated & inspired to taste from fresh seafood and refresh with a choice of happy hour cocktails. We opted for oysters, paired with a hot spicy sauce and “kalamansi”.

As crazy a concept as it sounds, their buffet was quite honestly state of the art. The food was nothing short of superb; the wide variety of ingredients was top of the line, for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. All of which was complimentary, might I add! The evening would bring entertainment along with it, with bands playing hits from the 60s through 80s to accompany the fine dining, which would inevitably inspire guests to groove along to the music. The nostalgia was evident on all of the guests’ faces. With everything being so readily available to us I honestly felt almost overly pampered! I am truly in awe of their services. The spa was breathtakingly serene, offering a special massage meant to destress even the most pained of minds. In addition to the secluded beach area, there was also an inviting swimming pool, which families enjoyed with their children sprawled along the deck, being accommodated by the excellent service provided by the poolside staff. Despite transportation being available at any moment’s notice, there was nothing compelling us to take advantage and venture off-premises into the city; at the Bluewater Resort, every single one of our needs were completely satisfied and met. n manilaupmagazine.com

T
he Roman Empire remains the most enduring empire in history. Its influences are still evident in many great cities of the world. One place in England where there was Roman occupation, their artefacts and way of life, and where you can experience this reality, is: “The Roman Baths, Abbey Church Yard, Bath”. The place is archaic and one of the most visited sites in the United Kingdom. The Bath springs have health-giving and healing qualities. The “Roman Baths-Ruin” has steaming spring water reaching 46°C every day. It was constructed in 70 AD. It was an ecstatic feeling for me to touch and smell how it was in 70AD, or about 2000 years ago, in a place a thousand miles away from Israel. Today, most people visiting the site are convinced that the Romans invaded England, whether they read British history or not, and this is one archaeological evidence. On the other hand, most British people think that the Bible is full of myths, despite the fact that countless edifices, monuments, tablets and manuscripts are available to see in the streets and museums

KINGDOM ADVENTURE around this great nation. With the rise of atheism and other “isms”, the British conclude this, without even sparing the time to read and study the Bible. A survey released two years ago, by ComRes for the Church of England, showed that 51% of adults in Britain identified themselves as Christian but only 6% of those read the Bible, go to church regularly and pray. I regard the Bible as the authentic record of the history of the world and human beings. Let us take a glimpse at the era the Roman Bath ruins belong to.
GOD CONTROLS THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD
The history of man was duly recorded by the scriptures, the Holy Bible. The Bible records the facts from the creation of the heavens and earth up to “a new heaven and a new earth”. It describes the journey in life of those who received God’s mercy and grace and the people who interacted with them. They are not only their stories but our stories too. The Bible is our guide as to how to reach the new heaven and new earth. The empires that impacted Britain were the Greek and Roman Empires.
Early Greek writers recorded the history of a group of tribes called “Celtics”. They described “strange peoples” living on the northern extremity of the Greek world. When their population started to grow, they migrated South, and that caused wars. These stories of violent interactions gave the classical world the impression that Celts were “warlike and barbaric people”. Before the Roman occupation, Britain was inhabited by Celtic tribes. According to Gildas, who lived during the 6th Century, the arrival of the Gospel here in Britain was in the last years of Tiberius Caesar, who reigned from AD 14-37. The Christian Gospel arrived in Britain just a few years after the Resurrection. Julius Caesar was the first one who tried to conquer Britain, but failed. In AD 43 the Romans again invaded Britain, led by Aulus Plautius, under Emperor Claudius. His wife Pomponia Graecina was one of the first Christians in Britain, according to Tacitus. A noble woman of power and influence, she risked everything at the time when believing in Jesus meant severe persecution that led to death.

The culture propagated by the Greeks and Romans was adopted from many other cultures, such as: Jewish, Iranian, Levantine and Egyptian, to name a few. The Greek Empire is known for arts, philosophy and politics; it also introduced the pagan religion described in “Greek Mythology”. One of the Greek gods was Asclepius. With the divine Apollo as his father and a human mother, Asclepius lived around 1200 BC. He was known as the demigod of medicine with the power of prophecy. His statue showed that he was holding a staff with a snake coiled around it. The Roman Empire succeeded the Greek Empire. The long-lasting memorials of the Roman Empire are roads, city buildings, aqueducts and public baths, among others. That is how the healing baths originated, such as the Roman Bath in Somerset, England. Many of the “classical world” and its features can be found in the Bible. Few of which are as follows: 1) Daniel and his friends were captured by the Babylonians who wanted to assimilate them into the pagan way of life, but they maintained their integrity and honour, and gave glory to God. They went into exile in 605 BC. At a time of great shame and oppression, God showed Daniel a vision for the future. In Daniel chapter 10, under King Cyrus of the Persian Empire, a heavenly being appeared to Daniel. The angel revealed how the prince of the kingdom of Persia prevented him from coming to tell him his prayers had been answered, until Michael, the chief of princes, helped him. He also announced the coming of the prince of Greece. The Greek Empire, under Alexander the Great,

conquered the Persian Empire in 334 BC. Daniel knew about the Greek Empire 200 years before it happened. There is archaeological evidence that the Book of Daniel was an actual event. For example, in the British Museum there is a clay tablet with the words “Rab-Saris” inscribed on it, a title found in the book of Daniel. And, we also have Daniel confirmed in the Dead Sea Scrolls. 2) The Roman bath-ruins display pools of water similar to those we read about in the New Testament. Two of these are the pool of Siloam, where Jesus healed the blind, discovered in 2005, and the pool of Bethesda. In John 5:2-9, Jesus healed someone who had been a paralytic for 38 years, while he was at the Pool of Bethesda. The pool is described here as having five roofed colonnades. The description of a pool having “five roofed colonnades”, or “five porches”, couldn’t be found anywhere in Jerusalem, so that some Bible scholars believed that the apostle John invented the story. But eventually, in a 19th Century excavation, a pool that matched the description given was unearthed. 3) Medical Symbol of the rod of Asclepius: For me, the demi-god Asclepius is an example of how people have tried to distort what is in the scriptures. The staff with a snake coiled around it, in the hands of Asclepius, a medical healer and a prophet, was clearly borrowed, then corrupted, from the story of Moses. Numbers 21:9 reads: “So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.” Asclepius was believed to have been born around 1200 BC, while Bible scholars believe that the Exodus happened around 1446 BC.
The life of Moses happened earlier than Asclepius. Today there is no need to go to the museum to see the symbol of the rod with a snake coiled around it. Many countries, including the Philippines, as well as the World Health Organization, have been using it as a symbol of medicine. In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and He said that His creation was good. Because of the Fall, the Creation and human beings need healing. Today people try to suppress the truth. They promote their own gods. But just like in ancient times, no matter how people twist the truth, as with Asclepius, or the pool of Bethesda being hidden beneath the ground for thousands of years, God is God and His truth shall prevail. The Roman baths, the pool of Siloam and the pool of Bethesda, signify physical healing. But the Creator sent His only begotten Son, not only to heal physical, emotional and mental sickness, but also spiritual blindness. We need to come to the realization that the flesh counts for nothing, and the Spirit is the real life. Only through Jesus can we have that kind of life. Jesus rose from the dead to demonstrate that life on earth is not all there is. He is alive sitting at the right hand of the Father. A simple prayer that comes from your heart will do to connect to Him. He is compassionate and will listen, touch and heal you. He laid down His own life on earth for the most important healing of all, the spiritual healing that leads to eternal life. And to know Him deeper after that first step, you need the living history, facts about life in the future, and the best-selling book of all time, His book, the Bible. n

ulfilling the promise he made to visit Thailand, the Apostolic Nuncio of the Holy See in Thailand officially announced that His Holiness Pope Francis will go to Thailand in November. His Excellency Archbishop Paul Tschang In-Tam and His Eminence Cardinal Francis-Xavier Kriengsak Kovithavanij said the visit will take place on 20-23 November as a “pilgrim of peace and to promote inter-religious dialogue”. During the 4-day visit, Pope Francis will preside over two masses and pastoral visits to the Catholic communities.

Thailand’s major religious practice is Buddhism but in the Thai context, there is historical evidence that Roman Catholicism was first introduced to Siam (Thailand’s former name) by Dominican missionaries in 1567 during the time when Ayutthaya was still the capital. On the side of the Holy See, the first and only Papal visit thus far was made by Saint Pope John Paul II 35 years ago. He met with Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej and Queen Sirikit in Bangkok. The statue of Pope John Paull II still stands in front of Assumption Cathedral in Bangkok to commemorate the historic visit. At present, Thailand has 388,468 Catholics in the country in 11 dioceses, with a total population of some 69 million people. His Holiness will arrive in Thailand on November 20 around noon at the Military Air Terminal 2 with an official welcome ceremony. The next day, November 21, His Holiness will meet with the Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha and other government officials, authorities, civil society officials and diplomatic corps at the Government House. Then it will be at Wat Ratchabopit Sathit Maha Simaram Temple to visit the Supreme Buddhist Patriarch. He will then proceed to St. Louis Hospital to meet the medical staff and have a private visit with the infirm and disabled. His Holiness is also set to have a private visit to His Majesty The King Maha Vajiralongkorn “Rama X” at Amphorn Royal Palace. Later in the afternoon, the public will have a chance to attend a Holy Mass at the National Stadium with the Holy Father delivering the homily.

On his third day in Bangkok, November 22, Friday, Pope Francis is set to have a meeting with different religious groups, priests, seminarians and catechists as well as with the Bishops of Thailand and FABC, members of the Society of Jesus, leaders of the Christian denominations and other religions in separate events throughout the day. His Holiness will also hold a Holy Mass with young people on the same day in the Cathedral of the Assumption, one of the two main public activities of his apostolic journey here in Thailand. On November 23, Pope Francis will be given a sendoff with a farewell ceremony at Military Air Terminal 2 before he departs Bangkok. After his visit in Thailand, His Holiness will visit Tokyo, Nagasaki and Hiroshima to meet Emperor Naruhito and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Winners Recognizing Outstanding Achievements in Fashion & Costume Design for Motion Picture & Television Were Announced at Metropolitan Fashion Week Closing Gala & Fashion Awards, October 5th Celebrating ‘The Most Fashionable Week in Hollywood’ LOS ANGELES, OCT. 7, 2019 – The 2019 Metropolitan Fashion Week (MetroFW)announced winners of its Metropolitan Fashion Awards honoring outstanding achievements in fashion and costume design in motion pictures and television, during the 7th Annual Metropolitan Fashion Week Closing Gala and Fashion Awards, held at the iconic Los Angeles City Hall on Saturday, October 5, 2019. Salvador Perez, Emmy-nominated Costume Designer and President of the Costume Designers Guild (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Mindy Project) was honored with the prestigious Metropolitan Fashion Excellence Award. Presenting the award to Mr. Perez was actress Rebecca Rittenhouse (Four Weddings and a Funeral, Mindy Project). Christine Devine, Fox 11 News Anchor and Eduardo Khawam, Metropolitan Fashion Week Founder and President, hosted the event, which was attended by over 1200 industry VIP’s celebrities, costume and fashion designers.
Winners in the award categories included a tie for Fashion Designer of the Year Award which was presented to renowned fashion designers Sue Wong and Dmitry Sholokhov. Outstanding Ensemble for Make-Up Artist & Hair Stylist Motion Picture or TV was awarded to STAR TREK: DISCOVERY. James MacKinnon accepted the award on behalf of his team which includes Glenn Hetrick, Shauna Llewellyn and Sandy Sokowloski. DOWNTON ABBEY costume designer Anna Mary Scott Robbinswon for Outstanding Costume DesignerMotion Pictures Award. Donna Zakowska, costume designer for THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL, was honored with the Outstanding Costume Designer – Television Award. Actor Joel Johnstone from the show accepted the award on Zakowska’s behalf. The show opened with a stunning dance ensemble of “The Night of Gods” choreographed by Dmitry Chaplin, Emmy-nominated choreographer and finalist on So You Think You Can Dance, and setting the evening’s theme of Greek Mythology. In addition to the Metropolitan Fashion Awards, the Gala showcased a unique, exclusive one-of-a-kind runway fashion show directed by Vano Kimmel, featuring unique collections of fashion and costume designers Douglas Tapia, Erick

Since 1970, Nosotros has strived to highlight and honor the great achievements of Latinos in the media.
