razy Rich Asians is a movie that has ignited a new trend on the timely subject of the significance of Asians as a population that deserves more attention. Considering that this demographic is comprised not only of Singaporeans with of Chinese descent, I believe that Filipinos who come from the same geographical area in Asia are emerging as a power to contend with. In fact, Andrew Zimmern of Food Network fame has foreseen the increasing popularity of Filipino cuisine amidst the popular international food scene. Movie lovers across the country recently gathered for sneak peek screenings of “Crazy Rich Asians.” This big budget Hollywood ‘Rom-Com’ is the first movie in more than 25 years to feature a predominantly Asian cast. Director Jon Chu described the movie on Twitter as “more than just a movie, it’s a movement”. This prompted media entrepreneur, Bing Chen, to buy out theaters and offer “Crazy Rich Asians” movie tickets for free. These “GoldOpen” screenings have gotten a largely positive response on social media and the film has a 98 percent rating on the movie ratings website Rotten Tomatoes. “It’s beautiful. It’s a very universal story of old traditions transitioning to a new generation and how love conquers all. It’s about how we want to build bridges, not barriers,” said R. Ray Robinson, a photographer who attended the GoldOpen at Regal Cinemas recently. “Crazy Rich Asians” is showing in theaters across the country and taking the box office by a tsunami, and not just by a storm! And, speaking of visual arts, we at Manila Up! International magazine are happy to announce the 2nd season of Manila Up! International TV to air in Las Vegas soon.

MOVIE REVIEW

CRAZY RICH ASIANS PHOTOS BY TONY GARCIA

Spectacular reviews! Crazy Rich Asians, the movie, is becoming to be the biggest in its genre. An estimated $25M on its second week of showing, it is steadily climbing up and taking a high spot at the box office. This is the first time a movie features an all Asian cast. ur very own Kris Aquino shared the red carpet with the cast of this movie. Her role as Princess Intan, although a small part, was representative of rich Filipinos. Moviegoers waited patiently to see a glimpse of Kris during one of her appearances. She graciously crossed the street to meet them and take some photos. The support from Asians made such an impact, it was overwhelming. Let the Asians shine!

van and Brandon have been through thick and thin together. They have learned as artists that we must claim our own path, and take the steps necessary for success and sanity. Do you ever wonder why there are so many “starving artists” and yet there is a ton of what might be considered less than extraordinary work that is put out into the world? Why is there success for some, while other extremely talented people don’t “make it”? Brandon and Evan endeavored to tackle these great questions. This is the tale of a true bromance that has blossomed into incredible service to artists. They met on set when they were in their early 20’s and from there they would, coincidentally, be attending the same acting classes. It was clear that they were destined to be friends. They decided to start writing together and began on their first script. They wrote together for years, and then slowly got busy with their lives and unintentionally drifted apart, only to reconnect several years later as “shit was hitting the fan.” They had spent years pursuing manilaupmagazine.com

this dream, this career, this success over there. They had both gone on to do amazing things, booking TV shows, going out for big roles, producing on large sets, and creating their own work. It’s an interesting path as an artist when you do everything right, and it doesn’t work out anywhere near what you wanted or expected. But beautifully enough, your path will always lead you to the path that is MOST right for you. When Evan and Brandon started reconnecting, it was under the guise of revising an old script they were working on. It was during these meetings that they would get into some deep philosophical conversations and realized they wanted to share these thoughts that were unraveling along with other artists. Both Evan and Brandon are trained actors, incredible writers and Brandon has done amazing work in production as well. Both have been navigating the film and TV industries for decades -- the Arts industry has an immense amount of through lines. They decided to start recording their conversations over beer and release them as podcasts. This was started as a way to hash out some of their experiences and reveal the greatest lessons they learned over the years. “The B&E Podcast” was born because two men were both navigating ~ life, artistry, masculinity and balance. We are not taught proper coping mechanisms for life. We are often thrown into the world and into a ‘shit storm’, only to either land on our feet or

faces, and having to get up again. We always get up again. The greatest lessons come from our darkest moments, because in those moments what we truly want is more clearly revealed. They created 165 episodes of “The B&E Podcast” and realized that through their conversations they had a clear message and that the podcast had evolved into its next phase. As true artists they listened to this ‘calling’ and shifted from “The B&E Podcast” into “The Way of the Artist Podcast”. The new podcast launches in August and will be a deep dive into how to claim your own path as a creative leader, as an artist and as a human being. They will go through their ‘Creative Laws’ and explore more deeply into how to keep sane on your path. This is their philosophy on life as artists. Their endeavor is to help creative humans live a more fulfilled life through their philosophy. Both Brandon and Evan now have their own companies. Brandon teaches screenwriting and producing with his company Fast Filmmakers (www.fastfilmmaker.com ) and Evan teaches acting through his school The Actors Awakening (www. theactorsawakening.com ). They believe in YOUR path as an artist, a creative, a human and they endeavor to show artists they are not alone in their struggle. They also want to help navigate artists through the intensity of living as an artist without giving up your life and the deep enjoyment and fulfillment that comes from artistry. So pour yourself a beer, raise your glass and toast yourself while you check these wonderful men out. KINGDOM ADVENTURES BY GILDA PINEDA DIONELA

Narrow Road that Leads TO

Paradise Saint James Park

I

ENGLAND

discovered a forest tucked in London, both an ancient and modern city of the world. One fine afternoon the sun was shining so bright at 31 degrees Celsius. This rarely happens in the financial city of the world. Old trees with fresh dark green leaves are scattered everywhere. It feels and looks so much like “home”. There is a lake with water as clear as crystal. Fowls of many kinds such as grey heron, smew, Ross’s goose, whistling duck, coot, eastern white pelican, Egyptian goose and many more abound. Flowers are of different varieties and colours from deep purple, magenta, fuchsia, KINGDOM ADVENTURE yellow, bloody red to white. By Gilda Pineda Dionela

22

This is a pageantry of flowers that is the envy of top floral designers in the world. There are trees submerged in the water of the lake that grow strong, leaves swaying gracefully as the wind blows upon them. I sat on the bench facing the lake. (Memories flashed in my head when as a little girl I would run across the road to go to a guava tree planted close by a running stream, where it bore fruits year round. The sweetest guava in my memory was worth climbing and taking the risk of drowning for. The same tree that my sister fell from, straight into the stream, she almost drowned. The birds were singing seeming not to have a worry about anything in this world. A yellow butterfly encircled me as I sat quietly. Visitors from different nations passed by but it was as if I didn’t see anyone of them. The cool breeze was perfect, it was a tropical like weather. I could have sat there all day doing nothing.

manilaupmagazine.com

Until... my attention was caught by a dancing, diving coot. (A coot is a water bird of the rail family with blackish feathering, lobed feet and a beak that extends back on to the forehead as a horny shield). It dove into the water its whole body fully immersed upside down. I saw what it was doing under water. Its somersault movements produced a round wave, like it was dancing with diamond confetti around it, brought about by the reflection of the sun. These confetti like brightness coming from up above was like angels throwing heavenly flowers in jubilation. The bird was enjoying itself. It was alone swimming to and from. We are far more important than these birds. Yet busyness at times deprives us of quiet moments like that to think deep and be refreshed. We work to live, and we do not live to drown ourselves in work and anxieties. The coot did one of the things it was created for, diving and enjoying. Enjoyment is what makes life bearable, not just

massive money in the bank, though it is helpful, living the life God created us for and enjoying it. The place is called Saint James Park. The name was taken from the former hospital for the leper dedicated to Saint James, The Less. In 1532 Henry VIII developed the site as another deer park. Elizabeth I and James I contributed to the aesthetic ambience, but it was Charles II who made exciting changes. You cannot find a single deer in this park today, but the pelicans have been permanent residents for 400 years since the Russian Ambassador donated several of them to Charles II. There are so many reasons that you would like to visit this place and it is just in front of Buckingham Palace. I didn’t know how relaxing and mesmerizing the place is. I always took my friends to Buckingham Palace not knowing the park that seemed so small is the entrance of this Shakespearean themed Royal park.

manilaupmagazine.com

23

KINGDOM ADVENTURES BY GILDA PINEDA DIONELA I discovered the place accidentally. Occasionally there is a church conference in Westminster Chapel. A chapel with a sitting capacity of 2,500. Yes, that big. The chapels in the Philippines have seating capacities from 150 to 200. This one is different. It only shows how God loving and God fearing British people were in the past. Going to Westminster Chapel I always get the tube to Saint James Park, but I always get lost on my way out, not sure whether to turn left or right. My sense of direction is not at its best. Not that I have any impediment, it is just that I prefer to stay in one place. And going from one place to another is an adventure in itself. During one of the conferences, I decided to take a bus and used Google maps. It led me to Buckingham Palace and to my surprise to a beautiful Saint James Park. On the south side is Wellington Barracks (the Guards Museum), to the east, Horse Guards that has the Household Cavalry Museum. When you are in Buckingham just continue to walk straight and there you will see the park.

The True Bishop of Jerusalem Let us dedicate the park this time to Saint James, the real Bishop of first the Christian Church in Jerusalem. Just like the park, the relevance of Saint James the Just was often taken for granted for millennia until the veil was uncovered by recent discoveries. I remembered a preaching of one of the most learned theologian who walked on earth, the late Dr. Michael Eaton, if I remember right he said, “There are not so many written books about the historicity of Jesus other than the Holy Bible. Luke the physician, the author of one of the gospels of the New Testament and the Acts of the Apostles is one of the greatest historians that ever lived. History proved his writings are accurate especially about the Roman officers and is reliable source of historicity of Jesus Christ. Now the artifacts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and James Ossuary have made the Holy Bible and historicity of Jesus grander than ever before. The long-debated doctrine of ancient belief of institutionalized religion has now been shaken to the core. Let us know James even more. Peter preached the first sermon on the day of Pentecost and Paul wrote two thirds of the New Testament, but it was James, the brother of Jesus who stayed in the Church of Jerusalem (mother church) to serve as the Bishop. Peter, Paul and rest of the disciples preached in different locations. At the Council of Jerusalem a certain group of people from Judea said that unless a believer be circumcised (a physical

24

or outward mark of a believer) he cannot be saved. Peter and Paul believed it is by the grace of God alone that we can be saved, not by works such as circumcision. It was James who concluded to settle the matter that the Gentile believer need not be circumcised physically, but that they abstain from idolatry, fornication, duly let out the blood of an animal (remember when our grandmas killed chickens for food? they let all the blood out for healthy reasons) and forbid eating of blood (but it could also mean manslaughter, murder and cruelty). Blood should be considered sacred from the time of the first disciples up to now because physical life is in it. Even during the time of Cain and Abel. It is the blood of Abel that cried out to God seeking justice. How can blood talk to God? Whether it is a metaphor or not God created man that He knows even the tiniest cell about everyone. If blood seeks justice how much more the author of Justice not demand one to show who He is? It is His nature to exercise justice and for eternal justification there is only one blood that will satisfy, the blood of His Son Jesus Christ. We fall short of deeply understanding the application of these four basic rules of the first Christian church.

manilaupmagazine.com

KINGDOM ADVENTURES BY GILDA PINEDA DIONELA

James was called the just/righteous because he tried to follow all (more than six hundred) laws of Moses. That’s a lot. The Ten Commandments is fewer but it is still difficult to perfect. Thank you Jesus He made it two. But these two is as good as the ten commandments. In short, no matter how, we tried we cannot be perfect, but the Holy Spirit is always there to remind us. One of the famous teachings of James quoted by some who tried to excuse themselves from going to church buildings is “that pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction (charity) and to keep himself unspotted from the world.” James didn’t mention a specific religion but the mere fact that he was the bishop of the first church building, meant people still needed to go into the church building. Which church? He called Jesus his Lord and he taught others not to be like the world. In short, a church that teaches that Jesus is Lord and knows the difference

between real spirituality and being worldly. I met several people from the parks, they hated organized religion or the church because of sexual child abuse cases committed by persons no one expected would or could do it. Whether it is an isolated case or proven by statistics to be prevalent at certain periods? I don’t know. Not many people who were victims would like to come out in the open and if they did those in power can dispense all the machineries they have to cover up the crimes. It has been 2000 years. Even eagles when they mature, their feathers became weak over the years. They retire alone on the rocky mountain. Then they pluck out all the old feathers and let it grow anew. Then they soar mightily once again. The gap between the model Church of Jerusalem where Christianity began and the present body of Jesus Christ has grown too far apart. The present body of Christ was severely bruised and deeply wounded just like the physical body of Jesus when He died on the cross. As more blood of the Son flowed out, the grace of the Father abounded. Finally, I just went to Saint James Park to rest and relax when I spontaneously wrote what I observed. And while working on this article, I checked the page of Dr. Michael Eaton and this is what I saw. “About Greenleaf Ministries; Jeremiah 17:8”, he is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit”. This was the very thought I had while sitting quietly under the shade in Saint James Park. This described the life of Saint James and the true Christians. Righteousness is the fruit we couldn’t get on our own but only through Jesus, James’ half-brother as a man and his Lord, as a divine. Jesus is our root and the Holy Spirit is our stream to sustain us until we bear the sweetest fruit which is eternal life. Just like what the eagle does, though it may be painful and sorrowful, let us pluck out worldly things from inside of us. Each one of us is part of the body of Christ, then and only then will the bride of Jesus soar high as the Holy Spirit blow the wind of power from the Father.

MAUI MANIA by EDITH PENDLETON

Living in the moment Maui style A sunset ends the day in Maui

A HAWAII

n emerging force is upon our collective consciousness. Maui has been considered by the esoteric as a vortex for this ethereal reality (for most who are “awake”). I hasten to qualify my introduction but for those who are in the “know”, no further explanation is needed. Back to our earthly reality. Maui has been evolving at such cyber speed that it no longer is as isolated from the bigger land masses as it was before the advent of internet and communications technology. The combination of fast forward computer capabilities and the native intelligence that dictates the lives of the local population is an odd marriage that has begun to bear an offspring - living in the moment Maui style.

MAUI MANIA

Ominous clouds, will tradition and new age merge with tome

of responsibility. As a whole we can do what is ‘pono’ (or right in Hawaiian) divided, we will end up like all the plastic scattered and strewn about in our oceans that has wrought havoc upon our home planet. Given time and opportunity, it is still a viable course. However, course correction takes a lot of sacrifice. With monetary gains as the prime purpose of business, and simple survival as the only option for many disenfranchised native folk, how can this paradigm shift towards what is both truly “fair” and laissez-faire? There are “heauaus” (sacred altars built by ancestors of the land) which still stand boldly, untouched, or at the very least, respected by bulldozing crews. I usually stand in silence and say a prayer that somehow, the gods will favor this blessed rock in the middle of the Pacific and keep it as a paradise to the fullest extent humanly possible. I continue to remain within my present conscious moment with the hope that our collective prayers and deeds will come to pass. Meanwhile, we continue living in the moment, Maui style. Mahalo dear readers, I invite you to fill in with your thoughts.

There are legends here that remain intact, sacred spaces that are “kapu” or off limits, chants and dances to appease the gods and deities as well as rituals and practices handed down for generations by ancestors. Undisturbed for countless years in many places, the onslaught of artificial intelligence has rocked the place to its core. A tourist mecca, developers and developments in tandem with computers has caused a dissonance which, although not nearly as obvious to the visitor, many residents feel with intensity. To live in the present moment is a mantra of the newly conscious. So it is with the simple folk who have inhabited this gem of real estate for generations. They follow the ebbs and flows of the tides, sit with nature as they revel and show appreciation in various ways, doing it in present time. So where is the disconnect? I am not going down that path. I prefer connectivity as my vein of discourse. Why? Why not? I ask. Being awake and conscious of the present moment is our leverage, on both sides. The old and the new combined in synchronicity. Where does the twain meet? Maui. This island which is st A heauau stands boldly proud amid i Mau in now an incubator for innovation and cars ed concrete and park sustainability with the protection of the environment as its primary onus

With this fun and festive atmosphere, the diplomatic corps, VIP guests and friends had a taste of the Italian-style of celebrating the good things in life with delectable Italian street-style cuisine and overflowing Prosecco. The Italian ambassador Giorgio Guglielmino, said that the event was a chance for both Italians and Filipinos to realize the deep connection of their cultures. The focus of the celebration is to highlight the contemporary aspects of Italy. Most people remain unaware of how much Italy has grown in terms of arts and lifestyle. A quick scan of Italian art brings images of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo, but not much applause is given to modern artists. Even in terms of cuisine, the public has yet to be introduced to the delight of Italian street food. A culture built on love – romance manifesting inhumane acts of kindness Italy has always been known as the European country bathed in romance. From arts to literature, the country evokes feelings of deep passion, beautiful locals, and familial ties. Even looking at classical paintings made by Italians leaves the ordinary person stunned; how is it possible that the sun seems to be a different shade of yellow than anywhere else in the world. This romance extends to the humanity all Italians display. It is not only the rugged men sweeping the damsels in distress off their feet, it is in the conscious effort to provide solace to all those who are helpless and lost. Take for example its constant and continual

acceptance of hundreds of thousands of war-torn refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea from Africa to Europe. Italy remains one of the more accepting European countries opening its borders to save these people. It is something that makes all Italians very proud of their homeland. But it is not only human life that is important for these romantic people. No, Italians believe that all things need to be protected. That is why they take every effort to ensure that their coastal regions and sea life are part of a heavily regulated conservation program. Each year, Italy is seen to have the cleanest seas in all of Europe. Countries sharing souls for ambassador Guglielmino, the Philippines and Italy share similar personalities. Both countries view life, family, and friendship the same way. For us, nothing is more important than personal relationships – face-to-face interaction being more crucial to one’s wellness than 1,000 e-mails. In terms of cultural growth, the Ateneo Art Awards will feature an additional prize this August, called

renewing a partnership with Philippine Airlines for a direct flight from Manila to Rome. This, after a period of more than 20 years. These flights would benefit the permanent Filipino community currently in Italy (a number of about 200,000) and the around 30,000 Filipinos who apply for a visa to enter the European country every year. It is safe to say that our culture, too, is built on love and passion. The Philippines can be seen as Italy’s younger sibling – a little rough around the edges but showing the same passionate pride that makes us do anything and everything for all those that we love. It is our desire to be good family members, and our wish to fulfill our loved one’s desires that make us very similar to Italy. The vision of the LA First Filipino Church is to see people’s lives saved, changed and transformed by the power of God’s Word preached regularly, clearly and powerfully. The church is affiliated with the Church of the Nazarene organized on October 8, 1908 in Pilot Point, Texas and with headquarters in Kansas City. The Church of the Nazarene is the largest denomination in the Wesleyan-Armenian theological tradition that believes in the second work of grace or entire sanctification. The Nazarenes believe that God calls Christians to a life of holy living that is marked by an act of God, cleansing the heart from original sin and filling the individual with the love of God. There are four congregations that worship at the facility located at 3rd St and Vermont. In Spanish, with Pastor Juan Fajardo, Korean with Pastor Sung Dae Kim, in English with Pastor Josue Tiguila Sr.and the Filipino congregation which is pastored by Manny Salva Cruz. ARE BEAUTY PAGEANTS RELEVANT TODAY? C By Angelina Kali

urrent social convention amongst feminists dictates that beauty pageants are irrelevant in the modern world of gender equality. They claim that beauty pageants objectify women for their physical appearance rather than their mental prowess. There are several problems with this viewpoint. The most obvious is that not everyone can be brain surgeons or rocket scientists. Rather than seeing the opportunities which beauty pageants can provide, especially for girls from an impoverished background, feminists view them from their lofty idealistic pedestals. But they are not in uproar against bodybuilding competitions which are dominated by men. Winning a beauty pageant on its own won’t change someone’s life, but it provides a practical platform from which further one’s career. The title clearly indicates that the girl has popular appeal which is often noted by modelling agencies and talent scouts. Rather than objectifying women, beauty pageants celebrate femininity. There is not much difference between participating in a beauty pageant and when a woman dresses up, puts on make-up and goes out in public. If women didn’t care about public opinion on how they look, why bother putting on make-up and dress up in the first place? What is perplexing is that the feminists focus a lot of their ire towards beauty pageants when there are far more taxing issues relating to women’s rights. There is absolutely nothing wrong if someone wants to participate in a contest willingly as it harms no one apart from perhaps the sensibilities of the feminists. The irony of it all is that what they inadvertently object to is the freedom of choice and the empowerment of women, two things which they claim that they are fighting for.

PROVERBS 31 JHOANNA DE GUZMAN

Overcoming a

CRUSHED SPIRIT

Setbacks, struggles, sadness, tragedy and depression.. These are some of life’s ways to crush our spirits.

W

e often perceived them adversely damaging, as all these sounds and feels so undesirable. Nevertheless, these very circumstances are ways not just to hurt us, but to teach and transform us. People always say one opportunity can change everything. I say, one setback can change a person. And this may in turn be the reason, for them to develop a whole new positive perspective. It’s like looking at the difference between the winners and the losers. Losers complain about the circumstances, winners find the opportunity in crisis, losers see the pain, winners see the gain, losers stay in their comfort zone, winners constantly expand their comfort zones, losers see a problem in every answer, winners see an answer for every problem, losers give up when there are obstacles, winners are persistent and will do what it takes despite setbacks, losers focus on obstacles, winners think about possibilities. You get the idea. Sometimes, it’s about how we see things that sets us apart on others once we are faced with such a difficult situation. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

No matter what the cause of our difficulty is, God is still ready and able to help. But it would benefit us even more if we can help ourselves too. One of the greatest motivating factors for a person to really take action is when they are faced with a setback. We won’t be challenged to move out of our comfort zone and we won’t be able to grow if everything is doing well and good. God knows what you are going through and you should not remain broken. When we are faced with a difficulty, always look at the other side. Brighter days will transpire as you place your hope in the Lord and be mindful to take the necessary steps He asks you to take. Having a crushed spirit is sometimes good, but we must not let that settle into one’s mind, heart and soul. We must have an attitude of a winner. We have an awesome God that loves and helps us. He will restore what is broken, it’s just really a matter of how we see things and how we react to it. PROVERBS 31

MY HUMBLE

BEGINNINGS

L

et me share with you the beautiful memories of my humble beginnings. I was born and raised in an uncivilized village in a remote island called Antequera, Bohol in the Philippines. I am fondly called “Tata” by neighbors and friends. In the village, there was no electricity and no running water. We take our baths and wash our clothes in the river, situated deep in the forest. We carry our laundry on top of our heads walking though the wooded rugged terrains in hopes that we don’t encounter or step on snakes, in which i did a few times. We cook our food this way, these are the typical houses of my neighbors, these are the gas lamps that gave us light in the evenings, I struggled to do my homework with very minimal light. This was my grandmother’s sewing machine, this was the potty/pee bowl we put next to us when we sleep in the evenings because the toilet is separated from the house. The small radio was the only form of

daily entertainment by listening to radio soap operas. Sweet potato and steam rice were a daily common food. This was our road to the village, this is how I played, this was a typical kitchen of my neighbors, the bamboo jar was our piggy bank. We had bonfires in the afternoons to keep the mosquitoes away. There were no beds. We slept on the floor with a mat made from coconut leaves. The older the mats, the softer it gets. I must go to the forest every 2 days to gather up dead woods to be used for our daily cooking. My school was next to a beautiful wooded running river. I walked a mile to school barefoot with my lunch wrapped in banana leaves, tied around with a banana string. A simple steam rice and salted fish is a typical daily lunch for school. Ahhh.... ..it was peaceful, beautiful, far and untouched by modern marvels; My grandmother always used to tell me afternoon stories, as i sat on the floor with my face leaning on her knees, as she sat on her window chair,

WHAT ALES YOU?

A

few months ago, my good friend and I “stumbled” upon a quaint, relatively quiet oasis amidst the “Triangle”, a distinct slice of south Maui. The eclectic mix of pubs, digs and shops catering to both locals and visitors alike, this one distinct place allowed us the space and ambiance to simply enjoy the unpretentious but superb menu along with world class tap and nitro concoctions. Although we suffer from ails of various nature, the name of the place caught our attention. “What Ales You” the sandwich board said. Then came Hurricane Lane. As it is a stone’s throw from my place, I ventured out and not surprisingly found Kihei Road practically empty, Kalama Park was closed, businesses shuttered in anticipation of the brunt which made folks hunker down. Not to be disheartened, I chanced upon the only hopping place! It seemed like folks intuitively gathered at the only watering hole that remained open. Owners Derek, Cy the phenom chef among Maui’s elite and Jessica Thoma, at the helm managing the bar were practically forced

to good, This magical triumvirate welcomed whoever walked in, not to turn away those of us who while away the weather and kept the pace and the place moving like clockwork. The ambiance is welcoming, some choose to stay in the cozy lanai, while others settled in the refreshing bar in air conditioned comfort. The bar food is beyond comfort food, their in house concocted sauces and hot sauce are to live for. This Taphouse as Derek calls it has ascended into the elite world of a Gastro Pub! Happy hour has both our “kamaaina”, or locals mingling with visitors from five star hotels simply savoring the best bar food and the best selection of both tap and nitro brews written on a chalkboard, talk about down to earth. The menu choices are such that I have to return, for after every one, I am happily surprised it is better than the last! Yet, the consistency of quality food and drinks never disappoint. Service? It’s top notch too. In a slice of a pizza triangle, “What Ales You” is above the rest. Stay on for the outstanding music

Samantha Goh B

lessed with three homes, the beginning of my journey starts in Singapore, however a part of me has always being in Malaysia and in my later life, I was able to call Australia home. I worked hard and was accepted in Monash University in Australia, and by the age of 23, I graduated with a Masters in Business Systems. My career in IT spans between Singapore and Australia, where I was blessed with having IT exposure in a few established hospitals in Melbourne. I was blessed with my little ones in 2012. With the arrival of the twins came many challenges and when I returned to Malaysia in 2016, I had the opportunity to begin a new path with Ms Beverly Tan, who offered me a chance to join her TKS & Sons Mrs International pageant in Singapore and it was the beginning of a wonderful journey as I was able to represent Malaysia as a beauty queen. When I won Mrs Asean in November, 2016, it was a dream come true. The journey continued with the opportunity to do charity work within Malaysia and overseas, raising funds for various charity missions. I was acknowledged with multiple awards for my charity work including World Top Awards in Feb. 2017, followed by Asian Smart Star Awards in May 2017, both in Bangkok. On August 2017, I was crowned the winner of Queen of Golden Global Hearts after raising the most number of funds for the children in warzone Zamboanga, Phillippines. In November 2017, I was acclaimed as the Most Outstanding Beauty in the field of Philantrophy during the Gawad America Award 2017 in Los Angeles, USA. Earlier this year, I was awarded the Top Volunteer Award by the Ministry of Education in Bangkok, Thailand. Then on July 2018, I received the Earth Top Awards 2018. Finally, on August 18, 2018, I received the Golden Global Hearts Award 2018 in Japan. I hope to be an inspiration to others that charity starts from within. This is what my Mom has always instilled in me, to do charity and to help others in need. I am currently the national director for TKS & Sons Mrs Malaysia and Borneo International pageant. A part time model, I am also trying my hands at acting and producing an album of Piano pieces. I am the Asia Ambassador of World Class Beauty Queens Magazine 2018. In closing, I would like to give special thanks to Sonia D Bermejo, the publisher of Manila Up International Magazine, for giving me the opportunity to be their overseas beauty pageant columnist. Thank you! Samantha Go

Rashwadee Special Needs Orphanage BANGKOK, MALAYSIA

his is an annual event that as Mrs Asean from Malaysia, I am honoured to have taken part in. Since it’s all in Thai, we have no idea what the full name of the home is, but after simple translation, it’s Rashwadee Special Needs Orphanage. Situated 30 minutes from Bangkok this place holds a special place in my heart. Last year I was there for the World Top Awards and I had the opportunity to visit them twice. I can’t explain the emotions I go through whenever I am there but I hope that the visit might bring a little light to these poor children day. It was back in 2016, when TKS & Sons Queens collaborated with other beauty queens from around the

world to bring together a charity event for the children at the orphanage, in the hopes that whatever little we can contribute may brighten their lives, even just a little. With TKS and Sons, there were three queens, Mrs International, Mrs Asean and Mrs South East Asia of which I was one of them. The orphanage has a special place in my heart as it serves not only children with special needs, but ordinary children who calls the place home. So it was this year, in 2018, that I had the opportunity again to visit this home and hopefully bring a little light to these young lives by raising much needed funds, and along with food, treats and clothing to the orphanage. Hopefully to enrich their lives, even just a little bit. Our Thai host really appreciated our time and the way that we help in promoting their events. It was

The TKS & Sons Queens 2016, Mrs. International, Mrs. Asean and Mrs. South East Asia collaborated with other international beauty queens who all flew in to Bangkok in a charity exchange campaign. 2018 is the second year we are doing this as part of the international charity drive. We raised funds and either bring in cash donations or food and clothing to these poor children.

during this trip that I was honoured with the Earth Top Awards for 2018 for my international charitable contributions. To show us their gratitude, his Royal Highness, the Royal Prince of Chiang Mai was invited to be the award presenter. To add to the importance

of these awards, they were in observance by a Buddhist monk, as it was their custom. My journey ended with a Charity fashion show where we were invited to be the judges. It was an amazing event and a great experience as we became a part of the festivities by helping with the auctioning of some rare ornaments. My ornament’s culture significance seems to be of indigenous origins. It was a fun time. Children as young as three participated. In some way, those three days were quite physically and emotionally overwhelming, but at the same time, it was a very fulfilling and very positive experience that I was blessed to have been involved with. For it to be successful, that was a bonus. I am looking forward to what I could contribute for the coming year 2019. 56

Earth Top Awards 2018.

I received the Earth Top Awards 2018 for my international charity events. Thailand organisers truly appreciated us, the beauty queens who volunteer our time and promote their events. They invited the Royal Prince of Chiang Mai to be the award presenter. All these in the presence of their Thai Buddhist Monk on stage. It is customary for all awards ceremony in Thailand to offer awards in the presence of Buddhist Monks. After the awards ceremony, we, the international beauty queens, did a fashion catwalk show for the audience.

Charity Fashion Show We were invited as judges and VIP guests.

We the international beauty queens were invited to go on stage and auction some ornaments. I had a doll like Pocahontas to auction. It’s all in the name of fun as the charity event involved children from the ages of 3 and above. We were there to judge the children and teenagers traditional fashion wear competition. All in 3 days we were overwhelmed but happy to be doing the charity cum award show. It’s a great success. Till next year 2019.
