fter the first ASEAN FEST back in 2016, the 2nd Annual ASEAN FEST 2018 was in celebration of Southeast Asian Nations & Culture bringing in all Asian cultures and businesses alike. The festival was open to the public. Highlights were cultural performances, a variety

travel destinations and tips, as well as historical & cultural backgrounds of the 10 ASEAN countries. The 10 ASEAN members include Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Our Philippine Consulate in Los Angeles, the Philippine Department of Tourism and Philippine Airlines were in full support of the event. At the same time, our good friend from Malaysia, Samantha Go, the Mrs ASEAN 2016, was at the Grand Ballroom of Marriott Hotel in Putrajaya, Malaysia attending the Mrs Malaysia Universe and Mrs Elite Malaysia Universe. She was so kind to share the photos of the winners and of course, her red carpet appearance. June is not only a month to celebrate Father’s Day, it is graduation fever all over and most every graduate and their loved ones celebrate endings from the academe and beginnings in the real lives they must eventually face and utilize the skills they learned as they move on.

the strength of the University’s academe was in the field of Theology. The grandest of most medieval buildings at that time were church buildings. There was Eucharist or communion and mass every day to honour the Son of God. That is why when I came to visit the church building’s imposing presence was to be seen everywhere. Oxford was a centre for intellectual debates, with scholars involved in religious and political disputes. “The Lord is My Light” is on the Oxford University coat of arms. One of the most learned theologians alive, Doctor Robert Tillman, (D. Phil. Oxford University 1977) tweeted, “Oxford University was born when there was a sense of the fear of God in the land, hence their foundation being Psalm 27:1”.

Great Men of the University of Oxford

There are so many great men that the University of Oxford produced who helped shape the world. I walked in the place these great men walked, the places I saw in the movies gave me a good feeling that made me exclaim: “ God is good!” Let me just mention of two graduates we know about who touched our lives then and now namely, John Wycliffe and CS Lewis. In the 14th century, John Wycliffe inspired a movement against the Roman Catholic Church and translated the Bible from Vulgate to English so that ordinary people can read it aside from priests, bishops, cardinals and the Pope. He paved the way so that you and I can read the bible whenever and wherever we want to. His journey was long

f you are dreaming to obtain a postgraduate degree or are simply a fan of Hollywood’s blockbuster fiction movies, the best place to go is to the place where “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia” begun. In the University of Oxford. It is a massive place steeped in history, adventure, learning and architecture. One article will not give justice to convince anyone that this is one place to include in a bucket list. I went there with beaming excitement.

The University of Oxford

The University of Oxford rose to prominence in the 1220’s. The university has no known founding date. Teaching existed in some form in 1096 and developed rapidly from 1167 when Henry II banned English students from going to the University of Paris. The early history of Oxford as it was known was based upon the importance of Theology and the Liberal Arts it also gave more serious attention to the study of Physical Science than the University of Paris. In the 13th century

KINGDOM ADVENTURES BY GILDA PINEDA DIONELA

and rough, he was known as the “Morning Star of Reformation” that inspired William Tyndale and Martin Luther. From the beginning to the end of his life, the Lord was his light. Then there is Clive Staples Lewis, or, CS Lewis. He is one of my favourite alumni from Oxford University. I have a collection of his books. He was born in November 29, 1898. His father was a lawyer, his mother was a mathematician and his grandfather a preacher. He was an atheist who converted to Christianity by the help of devout Roman Catholic, J.R.R. Tolkien (John Ronald Reuel Tolkien), the author of Lord of the Rings. CS Lewis and J.R.R Tolkien and their friends formed a group of Oxford scholars called “The Inklings”. In the 1930’s the Age of Modernism was popular. The Inklings resisted this movement. C.S. Lewis became the front runner apologist of Christian faith. During World War II, the faith of people in God dwindled. The religious director of BBC requested CS Lewis to talk about faith in a way ordinary people would understand. It became a success that during that time the second most popular voice known all over the nation next to

Winston Churchill was the voice of CS Lewis. The collection of this broadcast from 1941-1944 was put into print in a book called “Mere Christianity”.

The Lord is My Light

The lives of John Wycliffe and CS Lewis are living legacy in that they lived their life and maintained “The Lord is My Life”. However, when I came here I noticed that most people do not know and believe in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Oxford University’s coat of arms seemed not to apply even to its graduates anymore. And I wondered why. From the time of John Wycliffe down to CS Lewis people had holy fear in God, but after that most people feared man more than God. After World War II there were drastic changes in all aspects in Great Britain. It was the time of rebuilding. However, the social and moral values had shifted too. The population had become more individualistic and less respectful. Major changes in law occurred such as legalization of abortion and homosexuality, abolition of capital punishment, extension of legal aid systems that increased the divorce rate and led to the birth of

a Welfare State. It is a far, wide and deep topic but it is necessary to have a glimpse as to what happened. In short, people relied more on their prosperous government and they didn’t find the need of God. Continuous disregard of the Bible as the word of God is blatant and even passed as a law that rippled across the world. And some of those who still believe in the Bible diverted from the message and omitted the teaching about Hell because for those who do not believe, Hell is a very offensive topic. Jesus Christ is the light of the world. His brightness and glory does not depend on people nor institutions. Whether people believe Him or not, He remained the Son of God and Saviour of those who believe in Him. He taught about Hell not because He is angry but because that is reality. Jesus is offering love and redemption not punishment nor condemnation. The world 20

manilaupmagazine.com

rejected His teachings and lived by their own devices. But the result is very clear, I don’t have to write it down, just read the newspaper every day. My gratitude to Oxford University for having the likes of John Wycliffe and CS Lewis and his friends when everything around seems unbearable. We have the Bible and good movies and books to spend our time on. The world is in darkness since the fall, it will not brighten up by simply sitting and reading the Bible and the Chronicles of Narnia. It will brighten up if we share the light based on His living Word and the love of Jesus Christ in action by the power of the Holy Spirit. King David wrote Psalms 27:1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (KJV). Enrolment is now going on. Whose side, are you on?

MAUI MANIA BY EDITH Y. PENDLETON

With the recent outburst of Pele, the Goddess known and revered in Hawaii for her mighty, powerful leashes of lava, we are “vogged out” (for lack of a better term, I coined this one). The spews from the Big Island, our neighbor blanket us and obscure the sun from most of the isle. Not to be repulsed, the nonplussed native Hawaiians go about their business as their forebears had in generations past. Last night was a full moon, mesmerizing as it reflected upon the waters shimmering in its splendid light. The palm trees were silhouetted amidst the profile of Haleakala, swaying in the light evening breeze. Today, I watched as fisher folks rounded the shoreline, casting their lines. They carefully avoid the resident turtles who slovenly feast on the seaweed by the rocks close to shore. This morning, a rather odd sight greeted me. A solitary figure waded into the shallow tide and patiently rocked his shovel into the sand, sifting through it and sieved some into a screen mesh of sorts he had floating beside him. I took a shot from behind as I sat watching from the lounge chair on the lawn hoping to catch his attention. Not perturbed and obviously oblivious to my presence behind him, he kept at it as if on a mission. I took a brief break to check back later only to find he had gone as quietly as he had come into the picture. Curious, I shall pursue this and find out what he was doing. This brings to mind one facet of the local, native culture. That of respect for the “Aina”, the environment. Their innate ability to forage 26

without harming the food sources, both from the Makai (ocean) and Mauka (mountain) and all that is between. There is a local radio station which even gives tips on when it is most ideal to plant, harvest and even fish specific species of native plants and marine edibles. Above all, what I admire is their ability to sustain what is supposed to be blessings to be shared among everybody. They harvest only what they need, and if for some reason, gather more than they do, it is shared with others. In the Philippines, this cooperative trait is called “Bayanihan” and perhaps, our affinity to the Pacific and other Pacific Islanders has its roots in the communal way of life.

manilaupmagazine.com

Turning the page, we are in the new world order, ordered by the Android Revolution. Gone are the days when folks would leisurely chat and shoot the breeze, talking face to face, eye to eye. Most are stooped over some device or another, whether it be this computer I am writing on or the cell phone I am constantly monitoring for “pings” from Messenger, we are all caught up in this age of separation. The story I share about the way of life that I still am blessed to witness here on the island is slowly fading into oblivion, a poignant tale for the future to look back into the past, it is an image I shall tap into when I am trapped in the whirl of cyberspace. Poignant as it may sound, the haste and pace of modern life is not something a lot of people thrive in, myself included. Although inclined to stay in the loop of things, many have come to the conclusion that the American Dream is evolving into an American Nightmare. The population explosion being a given, resources is depleting at a rapid rate, competition is fierce for most everything and there seems no relief in sight. That is why, there is the Minimalist Movement, spreading globally,

silently but surely. It may not be the panacea to the wanton Consumerism, that has fed into our collective consciousness but it may make a dent. Not to return to what is now history, we have the onus of responsibility, in our generation to at least leave some piece of what humanity was about, Hawaiian story as above included. Therefore, the environmentally responsible among our world’s populations have come to an unspoken understanding... that of conservation and preservation. There is this parallel movement along with the Minimalists who are crusading for not just for reuse and recycle but also to refuse. The “Last Straw” is an initiative which was jumpstarted to refuse the use of plastic straws which have caused the countless depletion of marine life. Reusable straws are the trend, not in a temporary fashion, it is going to be the first step in our new revolution to save what is left of planet Earth. June is the month to check in on this and begin to refuse the use of plastic straws. Not a gloomy prospect this June. Till next, do your part, every bit has a cumulative effect upon the whole.

She is now a member of the British Royal Family who will undertake royal duties in support to the Queen and will support several charities and humanitarian. The life of Megan Markle was under the microscope, from the time her engagement and marriage to Prince Harry was announced, due to her mixed race heritage and being a commoner. Her mother, an American African, is a social worker and a yoga instructor who lives in California, while her father who lives in Mexico, is a daytime Emmy-Award winning retired lightning director. Her parents are divorced and Meghan is also a divorcee, who was married to an actor/ producer in 2011. Despite of all of these, Prince Harry had settled his life with Meghan, after all his past relationships with so many women.

Therefore, the Royal Prince had found his true love. Prince Harry and Meghan met on a blind date on June 2016 and announced their engagement in November 2017. And in May 2018, the world witnessed, as they sealed their kiss, as husband and wife. The father of Meghan was unable to attend the wedding due to his admission to the hospital, recovering from a heart surgery last week. Hence, the Prince of Wales, Prince Charles was the one who walked his daughter-in-law down the aisle. Meghan wore an elegant white gown with a white veil and a boat neck while both Prince Harry and his best man, Prince William was wearing the frock coat uniform of the blues and royals. The ceremony took place at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle. Thousands of people flocked to Windsor to celebrate this momentous and historic royal wedding. It is indeed, FAIRYTALES DO HAPPEN!

PROVERBS 31, WOMEN BY JHOANNA DE GUZMAN

When Was the Last Time

YOU EXPERIENCE PEACE? Romans 14:17-19 says..

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval. Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification.

Nonetheless, in this world full of busyness and distractions, how does someone really acquire peace? One of the lessons I have got to learn as I mature is to prioritize peace above everything. To possess a clear mind, keep a positive outlook in life, be complacent, embrace whatever I have, wherever I am and most importantly, to trust God, that everything will be well eventually. True enough, it’s not easy to not worry, fear or stress. But I figured, it can be countered and we can be really intentional about it. John 14:27 mentioned, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”God wants us to experience peace once and for all. What we just have to remember is that, peaceful moments are not rare, but we have to do it on purpose.

There are a few things that you can do to enjoy peace in your life Be in the company of those you love and stay away from negative people. You don’t want their thoughts and words to sink into your subconscious mind and affect your moods and state of mind. On the other hand, you have to prioritize giving your time to people who add into your life and make you happy. Take a time off. Find time to relax. Perhaps, there are some people who happen to express relaxation as being absorbed in reading a book, lying on the sand at the beach or even just turning the TV off. No matter how busy life may get, it’s important to unwind once in a while. Accept what cannot be changed. Believe that all will be well, don’t hold grudges, learn to forgive and forget and don’t nurture ill feelings. This saves a lot of time, energy and worries. Don’t take everything too personally. Emotional detachment at times can be so helpful. This would bring your life more peace, harmony and common sense. Avoid being jealous of others. Jealousy means you have low selfesteem and therefore consider yourself as inferior to others. Jealousy and low self-esteem often lead to lack of peace of mind. Realizing that we need to pause for a while, breath and learn to feel is very important. Considering all of these will take away our minds from its usual thoughts and worries thus, replacing them with an experience of inner peace.

EMOTIONAL WALLS

Putting up emotional walls is my worst trait and one that I’m openly, willingly and continually working on… BY JHOANNA B. DE GUZMAN

N

o matter how nice you think a person is, there were certain times when they would choose to ignore the world and wall themselves off. I myself have experienced that. There were days

where I feel like shutting everyone out... Emotional walls come from a legitimate place. It may be from an emotional, physical or mental hurt, it might be one’s way of trying to be more careful. They may have had experienced

people walking over them and it’s their defense mechanism or it might be their way to remove any power that someone has over them. What I mean is, each one of us has our own reasons. Yes, we want to smile and consider every day as a beautiful day to be alive but there were times when really, we just certainly want to build walls. Days gets rough, stressful circumstances occur, plans fail, life happens. Well, you may be asking, is this really some kind of an excuse for such an aloof behavior? Yes. Does this mean you are a bad person already? No. Dave Willis said, “Don’t treat people the way they treat you. Treat people the way God treats you.” That is why, it is important for us to know how to understand people. 40

manilaupmagazine.com

Remember, there was a reason why they’re acting the way they do, God wants us to acknowledge that even how badly a person may be treating us. Sometimes we just need to understand the choices people make. We must not look or search for our own attitude on them since we are created differently by God. Each one of us is His masterpiece. But just like any other work of art, we cannot always see its beauty in its whole form, because even the most broken pieces are acknowledged beautiful by its master. On the other hand, I know that as you read this, you might be thinking of a person who had distanced themselves to you and cut you out of their lives. It’s now time to ask yourself, “Am I wall worthy?”

astor Dondi Quema is a wonderful father, pastor, Christian, and leader. He gave me the firm foundations for a life of integrity, patience, thoughtfulness, and kindness which prepared me both mentally and spiritually for the challenges of adulthood. He taught me through his actions, demonstrated in how he acted towards and counseled others, as well as in his conversations. His advice and wisdom helped me through many struggles and decisions as I was growing up. This gave me the ethical backbone I needed for college. But, he also taught me through inaction. He made me think critically for myself and only guided me towards what he deemed to be the right direction when I struggled with making my own decisions. This taught me to be patient and listen to God in times of struggle. Through these acts he also taught me to be mindful of and to be kind to others. This helped me become a good leader within my own groups. So whenever someone compliments me about my character, I proudly think from within my heart and silently say, “My father taught me that.” Happy Father’s Day Father!! Nathaniel Quema

A Father’s Love (Rev. R. D. Quema) By Hannah Quema Ong

Can I get

O R

ecently, my father and I went through a different season in our relationship. He prepared my now husband and I for marriage. It was a very sweet and unique season in our life. One I will always remember and cherish. My dad has always talked to me about not only the type of man I should look for, but the kind of woman I need to be for the man God was preparing for me. My father has always been someone I could go to and talk freely to. His God given wisdom is so integral to who he is. He really portrays to me how our Godly father loves us. By giving us the wisdom we need to grow and obey, the space we need to figure things out for ourselves, the discipline needed when we need correcting and the love and strength that give you

52

a feeling of security that only a father can provide. It isn’t the easiest job in the world and father’s don’t get as much credit as mothers do for raising their children. So, I want to thank you daddy for all you have done to make me the godly woman I am today. Thank you for teaching me how to love God, how much character and moral values mean, for teaching me how to discern God’s voice, and how to love everyone because you always told me growing up “different isn’t bad, it’s just different.” You always told me to look at people’s hearts and not the color of their skin or ethnicity because God loves us all no matter any of those things or where we are in life. God always meets you where you are. It’s your legacy to me and to the generations after me. I love you dad. Hannah Quema Ong!

n Sunday, April 29, 2018 I was blessed to marry my best friend. Ryan and I had a very whirlwind romance, but it was truly a blessing from God. We met online on Match.com. Ryan was gifted a subscription by his brother-in-law for Christmas and mine was an impulse buy after seeing a big discount. We started chatting and getting to know each other. After talking for about a week, he asked me out on a date. We had our first date on March 3, 2017 and I guess you can say the rest was history. I knew he was the one God had intended for me on that first date. The feeling was mutual because he bought my engagement ring two months into dating and proposed after four months of dating! It was a very special proposal! He used his birthday party as a way to bring all our family together and used his niece to propose to me. Which was perfect because he knows I love kids and I wouldn’t want this special moment without my family there. It turned into our engagement party afterwards. Both of our families got to meet each other. It was truly a special time for us.

Next, was our wedding day! It was such a special day of celebration and meant so much to us. We really wanted that day to reflect who we were as a couple. Our main priority was the ceremony. We really wanted a special ceremony reflecting our faith and placing God before each other. Another detail that made it really special was having my father, Reverend Rodrigo Quema officiate our wedding. I have always dreamed of my dad having that honor and living that moment was better than anything I dreamed of. After that we focused on all the details that would make our wedding unique to us. We had a mobile espresso bar called URBN Coffee at our wedding and everyone loved it! We even got to have personalized coffee cups. Ryan and I both love coffee, so it was a great little detail to have that was “us,” but also a great way to keep our guests energized for a night of dancing!! Ryan and I are also foodies, so we had a lot of food. Our goal was none of our guests would leave hungry and we succeeded! We had bundt cakes, a dessert table, a donut wall, and a Filipino buffet

complete with a lechon to accompany the buffet our venue provided. Our day was really made special by the great group of vendors we hired. We were very particular and budget conscious about our vendors. They really helped make our day a success, put us at ease, and ensured that we would be able to enjoy our day. They were knowledgeable, professional, and easy to work with. Our wedding day went by so fast! Faster than we expected, so it was comforting to know our video and photographs were in good hands and that we had something to look back on. Another important part of 54

our wedding was the help of our family and our NewHopeNaz church family. They really helped us make our wedding day happen. Without their prayers and support in setting up for our wedding we wouldn’t have been able to pull it all off. So, we would like to take a moment to thank them for all they have done for us as a couple since day one. ---Hannah Quema Ong
