1 PRIMARY SCHOOL DESIGN
Kaira Looro- Top 20
MBAYE NGALAM
In the villages of Casamance, a profound sense of connection permeates the lives of its people. They are deeply rooted in their surroundings and in their relationships with one another. “The school of community” embraces this spirit by envisioning itself as a village within its own boundaries. Solid earth walls stretch from east to west, forming a monolithic structure that asserts its existence and promises growth.
DESIGNING CURIOSITY
The central courtyard, inspired by the rich traditions of Senegalese architecture, is redefined as a solace of intuitive learning. It holds in its center the momentum of saved rainwater, which is surrounded by a recycled bottled roof and framed openings of wonder. Children navigate through the school using steps and ladders, discovering playgrounds, classrooms, and mezzanines along the way. Classrooms extend both inward and outward, fostering deeper connections among the students and cultivating a sense of unity.

2 FARMHOUSE DESIGN
Archasm- I Prize
STRAWBERRY FIELDS
The farmhouse is designed to give back to the land it is built on. The house and the farm engage with the land to enrich the environment rather than take away from it. We implement principles of mixed-crop farming, supported by interweaving natural systems in the site using swales, bore wells, hardscaping, shelter belts, pasture patches and interspersed courtyards called “wadas”. The trilogy of context, culture and climate is integrated to develop the design in stages.
INCORPORATING DEVRAI ART VILLAGE
Devrai is a non-profit initiative that works towards sustaining indigenous art. Locating the farmhouse beside it helps involve its growing community in polyculture farming and conversly.
APPRECIATING THE SLOPE
The farm and the house respect the geographical context using terracing. We intersperse green spaces with built mass and varying crops across the contours.

Guilds of strawberry farming interspersed with beans, onions, lettuce, peas, radish and spinach maintain the soil character and promote polyculture.

3 RESTORATION AND FURNISHING NADA Ceramics Retail
NADA
In the beginning of 2023, we joined forces with ‘Nada’ to undertake a project that involved the restoration of a historic Portuguese villa in Panjim. The objective was to transform this vintage property into the perfect setting for their inaugural ceramics retail venture.
SUBDUED AMBIANCE
The arrangement of the retail area guides visitors through a central captivating display and then into more meandering room layouts that naturally lead from one space to another. The open criss-cross layout of the villa plays a vital role in crafting a seamless and spacious exhibition that feels interconnected. For the outdoors, we position the café seating as a gentle backdrop to the existing well, creating a feeling of detachment from the bustling streets of Fontainhas.

PROPOSAL OF BAMBOO COTTAGES
SBTC Bamboo Cottage
BUILDING WITH BAMBOO
My work with bamboo started at the World Bamboo Workshop in Manipur, constructing the Bubble pavilion with Ar. Juan Pablo.
The next venture led me to Ar. Richard Belho with whom our team designed and built a bamboo play pen for farm pets and skygazing platform for the travellers staying.
DELTA COTTAGE
In the latest venture with the material, we worked with SBTC, Shillong to propose Bamboo cottages for locals and tourists in various spots in Meghalaya.

5 RESIDENTIAL VILLA AT MAWLAI Work in Progress!
CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE IN THE HILLS
Shillong is an amalgamation of a lot of cultures. Tribal ritual grounds surrounded by wattle and daub structures and tall blue churches, stand tall amidst the walls of concrete framed boxes and a few glassed offices. The modernisation of the hill city is happening fast and only so mindfully. With this small residential project, we hope to create a pause, so when people look up they feel a familiar yet refreshing feeling.

Butterfly Airbnb in the Hills
LANDMARKING WITH NATURE
The project site is nestled in the hills of Umsning, Meghalaya. As you approach along a country road, the distinctive butterfly roof comes into view, offering a sneak peek before you even set foot in the house.
This slow buildup in anticipation mirrors the progression of a movie. You’re met with the familiar roof clerestory as you enter and are welcomed by lush greenery and a calm porch upon arrival.

EUI optimizations were done parametrically, against a default value defined earlier. After achieving a desirably low EUI value, elements were added to increase visual and thermal comfort, especially in non-HVAC areas.
WATER CONSERVATION AND CHANNELLING
I was involved in many day-to-day tasks involving the Hikari complex, mainly in the masterplanning- with plantations, lighting, flooring and water management systems. The last one, I saw through with the Energy guide and thus, chose to highlight.
A swale is a shallow, trench-like depression in the ground with carefully planned contours that channel rainwater away from buildings and paved surfaces. It manages water runoff by gently sloping the land to collect and redirect rainwater, allowing it to infiltrate the soil, replenish groundwater, and reduce erosion.
Soil and plants serve as nature’s own purification system, effectively treating wastewater by harnessing their inherent filtering and cleansing properties. It helps conserve water resources and minimizes the environmental impact of wastewater disposal.
