Manish D Patil I am a very passionate and energetic personality with a peaceful mind. I don’t look at architecture as my work but instead its my hobby. I have a keen observation and a great interest in exploring ideas in a 3d form. Model making is the most desirous activity for me. As I am into music too, as I play flute, I feel architecture as one kind of music only, which has one certain scheme, form and rythm. For me designing is not creating fancy things but one simplest thing that comes to mind. I am a very positive kind of person with a good understanding, while working in a group. This is the compilation of my work done in my academic years.

The functioning of the space defines the physical aspects of the space. This being a flute institute cannot be similar to any other institute. There are many different requirements in terms of technical aspects and philosophical aspects. In the way of teaching Indian classical music, the pupils always sit on the floor while as the teacher sits on a little upper level. So the classrooms need not have any table, chair arrangement unless and until required for certain purposes. Also the heights of windows could vary.

12

13

A courtyard also acts as an open natural space within the structure. But in the context of the city where every inch of land has a greater value, it is difficult to give such vast open spaces. For the courtyard to be open to sky, it needs to be on the ground level. But as the structure isin the city it needs to go up higher. The design solution to this very complicated but also simple in a way. Here comes important the concept of vertical courtyards where we can have open to sky spaces even on upper floors whe which a bit tricky to achieve as there are many design issues.

14

Materials play a very important role in expressing the emotions and nature of the structure. The program of the structure being related to Indian classical music which is definitely a subtle form of music in which various ragas express various emotions, the structure itself should reflect these factors. .

15

Besides there could be use of bamboo at certain spaces as the institute itself is desiccated to Indian bamboo flute. Bamboo can be used in creating various patterns and shading elements.

A Logistics Centre is the hub of a specific area where all the activities relating to transport, logistics and goods distribution - both for national and international transit – are carried out, on a commercial basis, by various operators. The operators may be either owners or tenants of the buildei ings or facilities (warehouses, distribution centres, storage areas, offices, truck services, guest houses, stay facility etc.) built there. In order to comply with free market rules, a Logistics Centre must be accessible all companies involved in the activities set out above.

The most important infrastructures inside a Logistics Centre are the warehouses and the intermodal teminal. The warehouse is the infrastructure where the transport operator mostly performs his business. There are different types of ware houses, depending on the activity the transport operator deals with and the freights it handles. In short, the Logistics Centre is simply a village planned and built to best manage all the activities involved in freight movement. Just as with a residential village, a freight one comprises not only infrastructures but also the services necessary to satisfying and responding to the requirements arising from its primary transportactivity.

POST GRADUATE INSTITUTE OF PAEDIATRICS, PAREL

32

Location : Parel Extension of existing Baijerbai Wadia Hospital

Due to large space requirements of the institute, and scarce area, spaces have to compacted and connected through corridors. Which affects the lighting conditions and create dull spaces. To overcome these difficulties light has to be brought in through sky-lights. Courtyards at various levels helps in creating natural lighting conditions.

Form evolution

33

Being a paedeatric institute and hospital, patients coming in the premises are small children. The care has to be taken that the spaces are freindly to children. One way to achieve this is to include indoor green spaces.

34

In such kind of designs where there are two functions happening simultaneously, it is very inportant to manage the circulation between the private and public spaces. each space needs to have its privacy and also need to be accessible easily. The culinary studio is accessible from both outside as well as inside but the studdents from the studio dont have acces to the residence due to ehich privacy of the house is maintanined.

LE FARM RESORT, Pune The site is located at Kamshet near Pune city. It’s a huge site basically a farming land of 60,000 sqm (15 Acres) area. The magnificent estate is located in Village Bhajgaon on the back waters of Vadivale Dam. It is a mango plantation farm. The location is a rare confluence of nature’s bountifulness - nestled between hills, embraced by a river and a forest bordering its fringe. The simplicity of its location belies the wealth of adventure and discovery. Client wanted Le Farm to be a unique experience of spending time at a modern farm. While one enjoys the plush amenities the connection with the nature is still very real, tangible and present. The rooms are designed to revel in the omnipresence of nature and hence every room opens to a marvelous, specific view of its own. The landscape will surely remind you of the breathtaking Scottish Highlands. The luscious green cover, placid lake and undulating hilly terrains, and a handsome farm make it a perfect holiday stay. A bungalow and few rooms were already built on the site on a smaller part at the corner. Now the client wanted to develop the whole site and built a nature resort. Where people can come and enjoy a stay of few days in natures bounty. The program was to design a administration office, recreational area, tents, villas and cottages.

OBJECTIVE This are the set of studies done prior to the designing projects to know the essence of designing. This is most important process involved in designing. Such various kind of exercises helps us to study the effect of light on spaces, merging of volumes, geometry, essence of scale and many such elements which forms a base of good design.

AD VERB ORIENTATION An istallation done as a group project interpreted from a poem

BD BRIDGE AND ENCLOSURE To create a structure spanning a certain distance and a creative enclosure using qualities and properties of paper.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN 77

Study to transform verbal expressions into a 3d form various verbs such as to roll, to tighten,to tie,to knot etc. were selected and final 3d model were derived from the 2D drwaings/sketces interpreted from the verb

BASIC DESIGN FILIGREE CUBE A certain alphabate(g) was selected and a figure and ground pattern was created and this 2d pattern was transformed into 3d filigree cube

AD STICKES AND PLANES STEP 1: To study gestalts principle by using sticks & arranging them in a 3d space STEP 2: Adding few planes to the model to ceate interesting spaces(encloser) on a certain scale STEP 3: Highlighting a plane by giving a color which emphasizes the model and studying it under light

BD RUBBLE SOLE STEP 1: Two small parts of the figure and ground pattern created in the previous exercise were to be selected. STEP 2: A transition was to be drawn using 24 planes from first pattern to second in a smooth fashion. STEP 3: A 3D model of those transition layer was to be made using rubber sole and observe the form created.

BD WIREFRAME To intersect the volumes such as cube ,cuboid, pyramid etc. to create interesting spaces. Each module was made using wireframe and planes were added after intersection later each plane was replaced with the with the colourful paper and light fixture was made

BD PAINTING(PIXELS) The famous pantings of the great artists were recreated on a large scale by using small cutouts (4X4 cm) from colourful magzines as pixels.

(MODEL MAKING) OTHER ARCHITECTURAL EXCERICES 79

CARPENTARY In this subject, various exercise were conducted so that one should have a good hand on wood. Starting with simple joineries and a block model using complex joineries was made. Finally a 3D selfdesigned prouct p was to be made by individual.

PRODUCT DESIGN 1. The first exercise was inspired from words like to drink, to hear, to speak. An innovative product was to be designed by which these actions could be predicted.

2.

The second exercise was to design a household product inspired from nature.

ART EXPRESSION In this subject we selected a slum(gaothan) area on a hill in bhandup. Survey was conducted, interview was taken and observing the present scenario and problems a small installations was made.

OTHER ARCHITECTURAL EXCERICES 80

CO-CURRCULAR WORK These are the extra activities other than academics done as a part of personal interests and hobbies. Various works of origami, Kirigami, bamboo works, sketching, photography paper art, paper quilling etc are diplayed here.

MAKERMELA

Maker Mela was the event conducted by the somaiya college. In which groups of students from various colleges come and make installations. The brief was to design the product for the urban commuter . On study it was analysed that there is lack of sitting spaces with a shed. So we created a kinetic structure inspired from theo janson mechanism which moves when people sit on it.
