The “Great Tastes of Manitoba” celebrates 20 years

As many of you know, the show is called “Great Tastes of Manitoba,” and it features mouth-watering recipes made with wholesome, homegrown food from the fields and farms of Manitoba.
As one of the commodity group partners in the Food Manitoba Group, the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association is proud to represent the cattle producers of our province by being a regular contributor to the show line up and showcasing the ‘great tastes of Manitoba beef.’

Great Tastes of Manitoba is Manitoba’s favourite and longest running cooking show. The fall episodes will be rebroadcast beginning Saturday, March 6, 2010 on CTV Winnipeg, with two of those episodes featuring Corinne Dawley, who represents the MCPA on the sow. Corinne is scheduled to appear on March 13, 2010 at 6:30pm and on tis episode the menu will be a basic burger with four tasty variation – Surf & Turf Burgers, Mini Cheeseburger Salad, Cocktail Hour Burgers and Burgers Luxe. The second episode is scheduled to air May 22 – the menu to include Beef Medallions with Port Sauce, Beef Souvlaki and Mediterranean Pasta Salad, and Round Steak Done Right. You didn’t want to miss it!
Be sure to tune in, and also participate in one of the weekly contests. Each week, the GTOM gives away a copy of the new cookbook (Great Tastes of Manitoba), which celebrates our delicious, local food. All you have to do is email your entry. (The link and all related information can be found at the end of this column. The contest winner will also be notified by email.)
What’s even more exciting is the Grand Prize Contest this year. The show in its 20th season and to celebrate this great occasion, they have crated an extraordinary culinary evening for eight people called
an “Evening of Great Tastes.” This grand prize will be made available twice this year. The winners of the first grand prize were herb and Shirley Schellenberg – and took place on January 30 at the Madison Square Liquor Mart in Winnipeg. The Great Tastes food experts prepared of their favourite dishes and Al Bowness from Manitoba Liquor Marts shared is knowledge on the finer points of beverage pairings. Jim Ingebrigtsen was of course on hand to make sure everyone had a great time. “The contest winner and her seven family members loved the Balsamic Beer Grilled Flank Steak served,” said MCPA representative Corinne Dawley. “They each had at least three servings – I thought I would never stop carving!”
The grand prize winner, Shirley Schellenberg echoed this excitement – “everyone had a wonderful time, from the moment we were picked up by the limo, until we were dropped off at home” she said. “An added bonus was the take-home bags – we felt like kids at a birthday party! I especially like my new cookbook!”
At the end of the season, another lucky viewer will be chosen to win this fabulous event. The next grand prize date is June 25 so be sure to enter. According to Shirley “we have memories that will last a lifetime!"
