MBP’s Fall District Meetings –

Thank you to the Hon. Ron Kostyshyn, Minister of Agriculture for attending the meetings in Ashern and Stonewall, for addressing the producers and for listening to the discussions on topics such as livestock inspection. Also in attendance in Stonewall were Interim Progressive Conservative Leader Wayne Ewasko, MLA for Lac du Bonnet and Lakeside MLA Trevor King. Producers appreciate the opportunity to engage with elected officials about matters affecting the beef sector.

MBP extends its thanks to the representatives from Manitoba Agriculture, Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC), and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada for taking in the meetings. Staff from MASC provided updates on their programs and services, including Livestock Price Insurance, predation compensation and lending opportunities.

Dr. Mary-Jane Orr of Manitoba Beef & Forage Initiatives was another presenter, and she received many questions and feedback about the research MBFI is undertaking on virtual fencing.

Producers also had the opportunity to learn more about programming and funding opportunities with reps from the following watershed districts: Assiniboine West, Central Assiniboine, East Interlake, Intermountain, Northeast Red, Redboine, Souris River and West Interlake. MBP thanks the watershed district reps for their participation.

Finally, MBP would like to thank the various businesses that helped sponsor the meals at the meeting, as well as the caterers who served the delicious beef meals.

Mark your calendar for MBP’s 46th Annual General Meeting which will take place February 20-21, 2025 at the Victoria Inn in Winnipeg. Watch the MBP website, social media channels and E-Newsletter for more information.

Larry Schweitzer, a former District 7 director with the Manitoba Cattle Producers Association (MCPA, now MBP), passed away in December 2023. He represented the MCPA at the national level at the Canadian Cattle Association and he later represented MBP at the National Cattle Feeders Association. Farm product prices, September 2024

(Statistics Canada’s The Daily November 8, 2024 edition) Monthly provincial prices received by farmers in September for grains, oilseeds, specialty crops, cattle, hogs, poultry, eggs and dairy products are now available.

In September, monthly slaughter cattle prices decreased across all provinces, with drops ranging from 3.1% in Manitoba to 15.1% in Quebec. This marked the end of at least seven months of consecutive increases in Quebec, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces. Year over year, prices were at least 7.3% higher across the provinces in September, supported by the shrinking cattle herd.

Feeder cattle price movements varied across the provinces in September compared with the previous month. There were gains in Alberta (+2.7%), Quebec (+0.2%) and the Atlantic provinces and decreases in the remaining provinces. As well, on a year-over-year basis, Alberta (+31.2%) reported the largest increase.

In September, prices for durum wheat dropped compared with the previous month in both major producing provinces, down 4.1% in Saskatchewan and 2.4% in Alberta. Increased supply and lower exports put downward pressure on prices. This was the 12th consecutive month of decline, as prices returned to normal levels from the highs seen in 2022.

Canola prices fell across the Prairie provinces in September 2024 compared with August, marking a third consecutive decrease in Alberta (-2.3%) and a fourth consecutive decline in Manitoba (-1.9%) and Saskatchewan (-1.6%). Reduced international demand for canola likely put downward pressure on prices. In addition, canola prices posted doubledigit declines across all provinces on a year-overyear basis, as prices continued to drop from the highs in 2022.

Compared with August 2024, wheat (excluding durum) prices declined across most provinces in September. In the Prairie provinces, decreases ranged from 0.8% in Alberta to 2.0% in Manitoba. The new harvest put downward pressure on prices.

The movements of monthly soybean prices in September were mixed across the three main producing provinces, with increases in Manitoba (+7.9%) and Quebec (+2.7%), while Ontario (-5.3%) posted its fourth consecutive month of decline. Lower anticipated global production of palm oil likely supported a rise in prices.

The monthly price of slaughter hogs recorded declines across all provinces in September, ranging from 5.6% in Manitoba to 8.0% in British Columbia. Year over year, hog prices were lower in every province, with decreases ranging from 1.0% in Quebec to 4.6% in Nova Scotia.

Applications for Consideration for The Environmental Stewardship Award Due to MBP by December 13

Manitoba Beef Producers (MBP) is accepting applications until Friday, December 13, 2024 for consideration for the local awarding of The Environmental Stewardship Award (TESA).

Since 1996, TESA has recognized producers who go above and beyond standard industry conservation practices and set positive examples for other cattle producers and the general public. As stewards of a vast portion of the Canadian landscape, Canada’s beef cattle producers play a significant role in protecting and enhancing the environment. They continuously strive to improve existing stewardship conservation practices to create a sustainable future – always farming for tomorrow.

At the local level, a producer receives provincial recognition for their outstanding environmental contributions. In Manitoba, this occurs in conjunction with MBP’s annual general meeting in February. All provincial award recipients then move forward to compete for national recognition from the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA). The national TESA recipient is announced during the CCA’s semi-annual meeting held in August in conjunction with the Canadian Beef Industry Conference.

Each nominee exemplifies significant innovation and attention to a wide range of environmental stewardship aspects in their farm or ranch operation. Such innovations extend beneficially to areas far beyond their land, including water, wildlife and air.

How to Nominate

All beef cattle operations in Canada are eligible to apply for consideration for TESA. Interested producers can either nominate themselves, or be nominated by another individual or an organization. All methods are equally encouraged. More details and the application form can be found at: https://www.cattle.ca/sustainability/tesa

Note: if you are a producer who is considering selfnoomination, MBP can provide you with guidance and suggestions on completing the application process.

The completed application form, along with all supporting documentation (such as letters of support, photos and/or videos), is to be submitted to Manitoba Beef Producers by email to info@mbbeef.ca no later than Friday, December 13, 2024.

If you have questions, please contact the MBP office at 204-772-4542.

Important Update on Restrictions Related to Winter Application of Nutrients

Short Term Provincial Variance in Effect Allowing For a Couple of Extra Days of Application

Provincial legislation normally prohibits the application of synthetic fertilizer and livestock manure between Nov. 10 and April 10 to prevent nutrient runoff, with limited exceptions if weather conditions permit. This is one of those years, with a provincial variance in effect.

Environment and Climate Change Manitoba has advised that nutrients cannot be applied on or after November 13th, 2024* (*Due to expectation of snow cover, frozen soils and below freezing temperatures.)

It is important to note the following:

• Nutrients are not to be surface-applied without immediate incorporation.

• Nutrients are not to be applied within Nutrient Management Zone N4 or the Nutrient Buffer Zone.

• Nutrients are not to be applied to poorly or very poorly drained soils including coarse textured Gleysols with improved drainage (for example agriculture capability class 4W, 5W and 6W soils) that are saturated for extended periods during spring thaw.

• Nutrients are not be applied to erosive soils located near watercourses but outside the Nutrient Buffer Zone.

• The agricultural producer is obliged to assess current weather conditions and periodically check weather forecasts when applying nutrients after November 9th. Nutrients should not be applied in instances where the weather outlook is unfavourable such as if snow or an appreciable amount of rainfall is expected that would result in runoff

• All other requirements of the Nutrient Management Regulation and the Livestock Manure and Mortalities Management Regulation remain in effect.

• All other local, federal and provincial legislation must be followed.

Individual Variances

At any time throughout the winter, emergency situations may occur. Pursuant to Section 14(4) of the Livestock Manure and Mortalities Management Regulation (M.R. 42/98), the director may authorize winter application of manure due to an emergency situation or extenuating circumstance. Examples may include the manure storage facility reaching its capacity or the imminent failure of a manure storage facility. Information on Emergency Manure Spreading Requests is available or by contacting Environmental Approvals Branch at: mmpregistration@gov.mb.ca or by phone at (204) 945-8321.
