MANITOU AUCTIONS Estate Liquidation Sale -Online Only AuctionSaturday, June 24 • 12:00 Noon Why an “online only” sale? Manitou Auctions, a subsidiary of Manitou Galleries, is proud to offer our first art & collectibles “online only” auction. Year-round, we are offered a number of items, some in the form of entire collections or estates, which may or may not be suitable for our annual March In Montana sale. The pieces that do not qualify certainly have value, but aren’t quite at the price point required for a “lot” in that sale. So, we’ve found ourselves in the position of having merchandise available for sale through other means/venues. As a result, we’ve decided to host an “online only” sale, mostly to keep the cost to our consignors down on these lesser items, yet deliver on our promise to get the best prices for quality items. This sale offers a unique opportunity for you, our patrons, to take advantage of a less competitive event to acquire artwork, sculpture, books, coins, Cowboy and Indian collectibles--truly a diverse selection of items that we believe you’ll enjoy. We are also seeking items for our Fall sale (date TBD). Please contact us by phone or email, if interested in consigning to future sales. Thank you for your patronage-we sincerely appreciate your business! Bob & Charla Nelson

46 x 55 finely painted on steer hide. Encased in museum grade frame. Collected near Lander, WY. Late 19th century. $4,000-6,000 Shows discoloration from age and minor cracks in hide. Very good condition overall. The Shoshone tribe were originally hunters, fishers and seed gatherers, closely related to the Northern Paiute people. Many Shoshone were highly skilled basket makers, others gathered rice, hunted fish, birds & rabbits, and with the introduction of the horse, many migrated to different areas, becoming skilled buffalo hunters. Originally living in the American Great Basin region, many who migrated went to the Great Plains region including Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Montana & California. Shoshone people who stayed near the Great Basin region had a diet of rice, pine nuts, seeds, berries, roots, fish and small game. They lived in brush shelters or dome shaped Wikiups, while the Great Plains Shoshone lived in teepees and ate larger game, including buffalo, deer, and elk as well as roots and wild fruits and vegetables. Often times the Shoshone would use buffalo and bull hides to make robes and blankets for the harsh winters. Many are painted to depict important events such as battles, epidemics or famines. Hides best suited for blankets and robes were only taken in the winter months between November & March when the fur was in its prime. Summer hides were also used to make moccasins or teepee covers, but had much less trade value.

Latham (1842-1928) Family Portrait 10 ½” x 13 ¼” photograph $100-200 Excellent condition. Inaccurate stamp on verso stating Edward S. Curtis Photograph.
170 Dr. Edward H. Latham was a widely renowned physician in the Native American society. After graduating from medical school in 1884, he was appointed Agency Physician on the Colville Reservation in 1890. He lived in the town of Nespelem and began photographing the Native Americans around him. At a time when Edward S. Curtis was gaining considerable attention, Dr. Latham was selling odd prints to friends and family. Although he never reached the fame that Curtis did, he photographed hundreds of photos as an amateur photographer during the apex of his career. Latham’s only photograph that was widely reprinted is that of Chief Joseph from the Nez Perce tribe. Unfortunately, the photo is and was often credited to another photographer named T.W. Tolman. Several other Latham photographs have been copyrighted under different names throughout the years and sadly, hundreds of others were never published at all. Nevertheless, Latham proved to be a representative figure of his time and place while living on the Colville Reservation. No other photographer during the time period lived with the tribes they photographed. In his many years on the reservation he was able to capture the lifestyle and culture of the Nez Perce tribe at the turn of the century.

William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) William Henry Jackson, whose life spanned almost a century, was both a photographer and adventurer. Trained as a sketch artist from boyhood, Jackson worked as a photo retoucher. He joined the Union Army where he sketched military scenes and took his sketchbook along when he traveled the Oregon Trail as a bullwacker in 1866. Photography became his profession, and recording what he saw remained his passion. By 1867 Jackson owned a photography studio in Omaha, Nebraska, producing portraits and group pictures. Jackson realized he could “increase the tempo” of his business by going off on three and four day trips to photograph Indians in the area. The Indians posed for gifts and cash, and Jackson sold the pictures to dealers in the East who had a waiting market. The railroads captured Jackson’s interest and by 1896 the Central Pacific coming from the West and the Union Pacific from the East, joined at Promontory Point, Utah. Jackson’s first trip West on the rails in 1869 was a business venture to photograph scenes along the Union Pacific route. For this purpose he fashioned a compact, portable studio. Wandering over the unmapped Rockies of Colorado as a member of the Hayden Expedition (1869-1878) gave Jackson great professional satisfaction. He explored during the summer months using a portable darkroom carried by his trusty burro. In 1879 Jackson moved his commercial photography business to Denver and the Rio Grande Railroad offered Jackson a job taking pictures along it’s scenic routes to attract tourists to the Rockies. Though Jackson photographed Indians wherever he traveled, recording an anthropological history was never his intent. He sold the images, which were popular in the East and traded photos with other photographers. He left an outstanding collection of Indian photographs taken as the Indians were gradually being forced onto reservations. These photos show the resignation that is well-expressed by Chief Ouray of the Uncompahgre Utes of Colorado.
“The agreement an Indian makes to a U.S. treaty is like the agreement a buffalo makes with the hunter when pierced with arrows. All he can do is lie down and give in.” The following 24 lots are photographs from the collection of the Colorado Historical Society, Denver.

Elizabeth “Baby Doe” Tabor (1854-1935) Having lead a rather scandalous lifestyle, “Baby Doe” Tabor, born Elizabeth McCourt, gained much attention throughout her life. Born to a Catholic immigrant family in Oshkosh, WI, she grew up in a middle-class family as the fourth of eleven (or possibly fourteen) children. Called “Lizzie” in her childhood, she was often excused from daily chores in order to preserve her natural beauty, which her mother assured her was of great worth. Her father had different ideas, though, putting her to work at the family owned clothing store. It didn’t last long, as the McCourt family businesses, including the clothing store and a theater, were destroyed by raging fires in both 1874 and 1875. After losing their livelihood and home, the McCourt’s struggled to support their brood on a minuscule salary. With a drive to be famous and determination to live lavishly, Baby Doe consistently pushed the boundaries set for a woman in the 1800s. In 1876, she entered and won a figure skating contest, which was unheard of for a woman. Inviting quite a few looks from the townspeople with a revealing costume that promiscuously showed glimpses of her legs; she, too, caught the attention of Harvey Doe, whom she married in 1877. Shortly after marrying, Baby Doe and Harvey relocated to Central City, Colorado, where Harvey’s father entrusted his son to look after his mining investments. When Baby Doe saw her husband’s lack of leadership and ability in the gold-mining business, she readily jumped in to help, with the idea that they would strike big. Dressing in miner’s clothes and working in the mine with the men raised eyebrows in the community, and many believe this is the time period that she gained her nickname, “Baby Doe-the miner’s sweetheart.” After three years in Colorado, Harvey fell into debt and drinking and their marriage quickly deteriorated. A few years after divorcing Harvey, she met Horace Tabor, a married, wealthy silver magnate in the town of Leadville, CO. He owned Matchless mine in Leadville and, it, along with several real estate ventures, made him his fortune. The two quickly fell in love and their adulterated story became well known and frowned upon. After a long battle of wills, Tabor’s first wife, Augusta, agreed to a divorce after winning an adultery lawsuit against him, winning much of their mutual real estate and mine stocks. Despite his tarnished reputation, in 1883 Horace Tabor was appointed to senate and only months later, he and Baby Doe married in a lavish ceremony. Donning a $7,000 satin dress and a $90,000 necklace, the event was one to be remembered. On the guest list were President Chester A. Arthur and several other dignitaries. It’s reported that many invitations were declined and the Priest who performed the ceremony refused to sign the marriage license after learning that each the bride and groom had previously divorced. After their ceremony, the couple moved to Denver, CO and although their whirlwind romance was sanctioned or even ignored by some, their story created a scandal almost unheard of for the time. It was a such a story that prevented the two from being accepted by the “polite” society of Denver, and for as long as she was in the spotlight, Baby Doe was snubbed by socialites. Although she was never truly accepted by the social elite, she still played the part, donating to several charities and involving herself in the Colorado suffragette movement. In 1884 Baby Doe gave birth to their first daughter. She was christened in a $15,000 outfit and doted on by her stay-at-home mom. In 1889 their second daughter was born, whom Baby Doe “defiantly nursed…as she rode through the streets of Denver in one of her carriages.” 128
Only a short time later, after the Sherman Silver Purchase Act of 1890, Horace Tabor’s investments began to fall and the family was forced to sell off the last of the real estate he had acquired over the years. In 1893 silver prices plummeted and the Tabors lost their fortune. Although she had spent the last several years pampering herself and her children, Baby Doe once again stepped up to help her husband and took control of his business ventures while he was away with other responsibilities. She sold her jewelry to make money and kept spirits high when they hit rock bottom. Despite their efforts, Horace was forced to take a job working in the mines, and the family moved into a boarding house where they endured great poverty until 1898 when political friends arranged for Horace to work as postmaster of Denver. They were able to move into the Windsor Hotel and lived a moderate lifestyle on an annual salary of $3,700. Fifteen months after his appointment as postmaster, Horace Tabor’s health deteriorated and he passed away around age 70. As a woman still in her mid-forties, Baby Doe decided to return to Leadville, perhaps to rehabilitate and get the Matchless mine back up and running. Documentation is spotty during this time period, and it’s unknown who actually owned the mine. Her efforts were unsuccessful and she took on menial jobs to earn money. Baby Doe and her two daughters reluctantly settled into a cabin on the site of the Matchless mine; a structure that had been “a former tool shed…and was inadequate for Colorado winters”. As the years went on and her daughters grew older, her first born moved away to be with her grandparents in Wisconsin and her youngest began drinking and finding herself as an attractive young woman. Shortly after her oldest moved away, Baby Doe sent her youngest to Denver, where she hoped a new environment would improve her behavior. Baby Doe was left alone for the remaining 35 years of her life. Refusing charity, she would wrap her legs in burlap sacks in the winter months to keep warm, and she lived on stale bread and suet. She turned to religion and incessant writing in her later years and soon became thought of as a “madwoman” among townspeople. It’s said that she dressed in a mixture of men’s and women’s clothing, mining boots, and protected the mining land with a shotgun. In 1935 after a severe snowstorm, neighbors found Baby Doe dead in her cabin, “frozen to the floor”. Friends she had known in her previous life in Denver still cared for Baby Doe and had her body sent by train to Denver where she was given a proper service and then buried next to her husband in Wheat Ridge, CO. Her legacy is still remembered today, whether as an admirable rebel, or a home-wrecker, her story is one that will continue to be told.
