here are picturesque mountain ridges surrounding Nuwara Eliya in front of me, gilded by the morning sun. In 1819, when John Davy, an English military physician and writer was hunting here, the mountain ridges have overgrown with virgin forests full of leopards, elephants and deer. He was the first, who drew attention to the unusual climate of this place. His encouraging report grabbed Barnes's interest and he decided to build his holiday home here. Soon, Nuwara Eliya became not only a big game hunting place and a military camp, but also a sanatorium and a holiday resort for the English colonists. Exotic climates are also suitable for growing vegetables and flowers. In 1848, Samuel Baker, formerly known as the African explorer, founded the first farm in this area. Today this area is famous for its strawberries, flowers, carrots, leeks, lettuce and many other vegetables. www.ballysmagazine.com

After the coffee crisis caused by the devastating plague, a tea covered this region. The growing forests were replaced by larger tea plantations and Nuwara Eliya soon became the second district in the country of cultivating one of world's best tea. Today Nuwara Eliya is a bustling town with the atmosphere of recent times, with its characteristic housing and several colonial buildings. Among them are the post office, the previously mentioned Grand Hotel and the golf club. The Hill Club Hotel - once the only gentlemen's club and Queen's Cottage, formerly the residence of the governors and now the president of Sri Lanka are also iconic figures in the vicinity. The beautiful Lake Gregory is also a significant beauty in Nuwara Eliya. The lake was designed to the recreation of the English elites. Just a few steps away is the highest Race Course in the world, located at the end of Victoria Park. The inaugural race took place in 1875.

Currently, almost after two centuries since John Davy discovered the value of this place, "Little England", situated at an altitude of over 1800 m, unchangingly attracts domestic and foreign tourists. The most popular season is from March to May and August to September when bright mountain air gives respite from the biggest heat. The city presents its whole beauty in April, when nature blooms with all its beauty, and elegant hats and umbrellas of ladies colourfully flowering at the Race Course. B

The Kingsbury and Ballys' the winning combination BY CHANAKA DE SILVA

The Kingsbury Hotel has been around for a while. Though under a different name it has not- lost its' favoured place among its guests. Speaking to General manager Christine Chevalaz had this say, "The Kingsbury" is known for its quality of service among all its' guests. We get a large multinational clientele and local as well. All these guests generally have no hesitation in recommending us to others.

'Grill' which is an intimate restaurant for small functions. Then there is the new" Ce La Vi, A Singaporean brand which is popular with the guests at Ballys. It is open until 2 am in the morning. This gives the guest some time to relax. They can enjoy a drink before they go to the casino or also once they return. It is a very pleasant place to be in the evening, especially at sunset, adding further she said, along with this we have the Modern Asian Restaurant. It has both Japanese and Sri Lankan food. It has the Tappan Table for a small crowd, as well. This makes it very popular, especially with the guests from Bally's.

The first is that our guests like the 'Buffet'. It is the largest' Buffet' in Colombo. It has the largest selection available. It has Sri Lankan, Thai, Indian and international food. This makes the Buffet very large. The other strength is that our other restaurants' have a large opening on their A-la-Carte menu. Our Chinese restaurant serves authentic Chinese food as it is being manned by Chinese chefs. Also as Chinese food is not as spicy as Sri Lankan food, we have another menu with the food made with spices like Sri Lankans are used to. Hence this gives the guest a choice of having authentic Chinese food with Sri Lankan flavour.

There is also the Beach Club and Bar/ restaurant by the pool for those who want to relax and casually enjoy. They can have Pizza. Our Chinese restaurant has an offering of around 50 items on the menu and that is a lot. Even our other restaurants have a large' A-la-Carte' selection. We carry wines from the New World, Australia, Chile New Zealand, South Africa and Italy as well. We also have a large' selection of Sake as well. The Bar has a wide range of whisky, and single malts as well.

Speaking further she said" We have the 'Ocean 'restaurant which is the seafood restaurant. A large variety of seafood is on offer. The range extends ours from Oysters, prawns, lobster and many varieties of Fish, prepared to the guest's requirement. This restaurant can be a leisure or corporate restaurant as necessary. Then we have the

We get a large clientele from Balley's, see and to say why they prefer the Kingsbury is the location and the variety of food on offer. As they usually get up late in the morning they can have whatever food they like. Our Indian chef does a large variety of both North and Southern for Indian food. The range in the international buffet is wide. As the Indian clients have a specific demand for food and they know at the Kingsbury it will be provided for them.

23

General manager Christine Chevalaz As we have been dealing with fur balky clients for some time; now we understand how to look after them. These clients sometimes come late, and as they are at the Casino, may not, on occasion check out on time. For instances like these, we are very flexible. As these guests also know that we take care of them, they are very comfortable with us, said Kingsbury General Manager, Christine Chevalaz. Among our other attractions is our Thai spa, with Thai masseurs. Especially the Indian clientele like the treatment massage applied with a lot of pressure. This they only get at an authentic Thai Spa. This is open till 11 o'clock at night especially to accommodate casino clients who like to relax at the spa after returning from playing at Ballys. We also have a limousine service with Mercedes E Class to travel to the Airport in style if they wish so. Finally speaking on to guest segments Chevalaz said Europe, Chinese and Indian makeup the larger part. This mix look works well for us. Europe and China bring business clients by large and a half of them will be for gaming and the old for business. Our larger segment is the leisure sector that comes to this Hotel. We still have groups that comes in but that is a shrinking category. The future will be that we see clients coming for gaming and business in the city hotels, she said. B

THE DEPTHS OF COLOMBO'S NIGHT LIFE

THE CAUSE OF THE WAR BY CHANAKA DE SILVA

In all the poems and epics written about the Rama Ravana war there is no single cause shown as the reason for the conflict. But it is clear that it was not Ravana of Lanka who started it. The epic tales show two strong characters who brought together by the actions of others into a conflict they never wanted. They were both drawn in by circumstances that were not of their choosing either. While countless interpretations of these circumstances try to depict of Ravana as the villain he was as much a victim as Sita was. In dwelling in depth into the epic one can safely assume that the real problem started with the appearance of Shurpanakha, Ravana's sister on the scene. I have tried to cover the who Shurpanakha was her circumstances and the real cause for here fury at the treatment that was meted out to her by Rama which was the true start of the war. As it has been said that 'Hell knows no wrath as a woman scorned' hold true today as it was in Ravana's time.

TIME IN EXILE Rama, wife Sita and brother Lakshmana were living in exile. They moved from one place to another and Rama, a mighty warrior, protected holy sages from evil demons of the forest by destroying them and paid their respect to the sages. Their journey continued and they reached a place called Panchavati on the banks of River Godavari.

ENTER SHURPANAKHA The place Panchavati was very charming with a pleasant nature and greenery. Lakshmana built a beautiful hut to live along the riverside. One day, Shurpanakha, sister of Ravana, was wandering about and was instantly struck by Rama and Lakshmana’s looks and fell in love. She assumed the appearance of a beautiful woman and approached Rama. Ravana was shocked to see her disfigured and asked her for the cause. Shurpanakha narrated the whole story, pleaded him for revenge and informed about the beauty of Sita. Ravana thought of an evil plan that would get lovely Sita.

SHURPANAKHA The youngest child of Rishi Vishrava and his second wife, Kaikesi, Shurpanakha was given the name of “Minakshi” (the fish-eyed one) at birth. She grew up to marry the Asura Dushtabuddhi. In the beginning, Shurpanakha‘s husband enjoyed high favor with her brother Ravana, the King of Lanka, and they were privileged members of Ravana’s court, however the three fell out at some point due to Dushtabuddhi’s scheming for more power. Ravana had Dushtabuddhi killed, an act that earned Ravana his sister’s great displeasure. The widowed Shurpanakha spent her time between Lanka and the jungles of Southern India, visiting her Asura, forest-dwelling relatives, every now and then.

Based on the Valmiki Ramyana, during one such visit, she saw Rama in the forest of Panchavati and immediately fell in love with him. She wanted to have Rama and masked herself as a beautiful woman utilizing the power of Maya. She came near Rama and bowed low to touch his feet. Rama inquired about her origin. Shurpanakha answered that she was the daughter of grandson of Brahma and Kubera was her brother. Following that she praised Ram’s masculine beauty and asked him to marry her. Ram said that he is already married and is ‘Ekapatnivrata’ meaning ‘loyal to one wife only’.

Ravana fighting with

Jatayu

Rama requested her to approach his brother Lakshman. But Lakshmana enjoyed teasing her and said that he was his brother’s servant. Hence, it would be better for her to be Ram’s second wife instead of his wife. Surpanakha turned angry and made abusive remark about Sita and threatened to eat her. Lakshmana came to Sita’s defense and cut off Surpanakha’s nose in anger. To avenge this insult, she first reacted by going to her brother Khar who sent seven Rakshasa warriors to attack Rama, but were easily dispatched. Khar then attacked with 700,000 soldiers including himself, who were all killed.

The humiliation of Shurpa

nakha

She then reacted by going straight to Ravana’s court and extolling Sita’s virtues and beauty, praising Sita as a worthy wife for Ravana, and inciting him to abduct her by force and marry her. Ravana, despite advice to the contrary from his brother, Vibhishana, kidnapped Sita causing the war. www.ballysmagazine.com

THE CAUSE OF THE WAR

to catch it alive, he killed it with a sharp arrow. As the arrow struck, Maricha gained his true form and screamed loudly imitating Rama asking for help to Sita and Lakshmana. Ravana’s plan had worked. Thinking that some problem had occurred to Rama and upon Sita’s request, Lakshmana left Sita alone in-search of Rama.

Mandodari stops Ravana from slaying

Sita

There are some versions of the Ramyana which claim that Surpanakha had no real romantic interest in the brothers and that she had orchestrated the war for no reason other than to seek revenge against Ravana for her husband’s murder. After many years of scheming for his downfall, she discovered that Ravan had more than a match in Ram, the young Prince of Ayodhya. Ram had killed both her grandmother, the ferocious Thataka, and her uncle, Subahu. Surpanakha’s cousins were afraid of the young Prince and Surpanakha decided to pit her brother against Ram, realizing that no one else was powerful enough to slay Ravana.

RAVANA'S DIVERSION TO GET TO SITA Ravana flew in his ‘magical chariot’ and reached demon Maricha. He asked Maricha, master of disguise, to take the form of a golden deer. Maricha who already had an experience of being punished by Rama refused at first but as he knew that either way he would be killed so preferred to be killed by Rama and agreed finally. Maricha transformed into a golden deer and roamed in-front of Sita. Sita asked Rama to catch it for her. Rama asked Lakshmana to look after Sita and went behind the deer. The deer led him deep into the forest and at last when Rama found it impossible www.ballysmagazine.com

Here in this part of the story speaks of not one but two curiosities. One why did Rama draw a line for Sita not to cross.? He had not said for here not to allow anyone in but rather that she does not venture out. Further what was this line that even the mighty Ravana would not cross? If this line was meant for Sita not to cross it, does it not look like that she asked Ravana to pull her out of it? For the mighty Ravana not to cross but to pull her across looks very suspicious. Obviously Ravana honoured the line. Other wise he would have simply gone across the line and taken her. Though he did not, hesitate to pull Sita across it. Does this not look like that it was Sita who was imprisoned and she asked to be taken out? When considering these fact it seems that not one but two scorned women were out for revenge from the same man. And the man was not Ravana but Rama. B

Before he left, he drew a line across Sita and asked her not to cross till he returned. Ravana watching from a distance disguised himself as a hermit and approached Sita. Sita bought some food to offer the holy man standing within the line. Ravana asked her to come out of that line and offer. But before Sita could realize what she was doing, Ravana caught hold of her hand and took her away in his chariot towards Lanka. Sita screamed out loudly for help. As he drove, Jatayu, the great eagle/ Vulture , objected Ravana and fought with him. But Ravana mercilessly, cut off his wing and Jatayu fell down. Sita’s attempt to escape went all in vain and as they drove,Sita took of her jewellery and threw it down hoping that Rama may see it.

A Glimpse Of Mannar

Text & Pix: Dhilip De Alwis (The Naturalist of the other Corner - www.tocsrilanka.com)

M

annar, formerly spelled as Manar, is a large town, situated in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. It is governed by an Urban Council. The town is located on Mannar Island overlooking the Gulf of Mannar and is home to the historic Ketheeswaram Temple. Mannar is known for pearl farming during the ancient Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka was the best producer of high quality pearls in the world and afterwards, the country was known for its baobab trees and for its fort, built by the Portuguese in 1560 and later, taken by the Dutch in 1658 and rebuilt. Its ramparts and bastions are intact, though the interior is largely destroyed. Formerly, the town was renowned as the centre of pearl fishing, mentioned in the 2nd-century CE Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. Visually, the modern town is dominated by its Hindu temples, mosques and churches. The Catholic Church has a diocese headquartered in the town. Besides the above I will be highlighting here the other valuable flanks of this city. Mannar (Manar) is one of the best hotspots to observing waders in Sri Lanka. Waders are a group of birds that tend to attract your attention towards them. They are considered as the greatest travellers on air. They have a spectacular ability to travel very long distances and can be found to be of varied shapes, sizes, plumage patterns and shades of beautiful colours. So, Waders mean shorebirds. They occupy the water-body areas that extend to even areas of the shore. For instance, notice how Flamingos prefer to occupy deeper areas of water for their food comprising algae that forms in lagoon waters? The other type of waders remain in the water-body areas of the shore. www.ballysmagazine.com

Generally, most waders are of migratory species and the best time to observe them is around the time winter approaches their original habitat. Between the months of September and May would be the best period to observe these birds in Sri Lanka. Sometimes, these time frames may differ due to climatic changes which occurs around the world. There are two migratory paths that have been identified in the Indian subcontinent and they enter Sri Lanka through these two paths during the northern winters. We should be proud that many of these waders make their final stop in Sri Lanka to complete their migration process. There are about 45 waders that have been identified as regular visitors to Sri Lanka. The Mannar of Sri Lanka hosts many species of waders around the Vankalai Bird Sanctuary, being the Northern peninsula of Sri Lanka. This sanctuary consists of a variety of lagoons and shore areas in Mannar. Most highlighted aspect of catching a glimpse of nature is to witness Greater Flamingos. It is worth the effort, sighting Greater Flamingos when they fly in flocks encompassing their own kind and when they perform their ‘ballet’ in waters to attract the most suitable partner before they travel back to their own destination. Other than waders there are many other migratory and resident bird species found in this area as well as in the surrounding areas such as Talaimannar. Also, Mannar is a place where no photographer will reject visiting. Hence, it is filled with beautiful scenic appearances wherever you go. The Fishing harbour around sunset has allowed for the capture of some amazing moments and made for some great pictures filled with golden colours besides my wildlife photography. Unfortunately, I cannot publish those pictures here since I have submitted the pictures for contests around the world. B

SO MAJESTIC! SO WILD! SRI LANKA’S INCREDIBLE WILDLIFE TAKES ITB BY STORM!

The Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB)consolidated the ‘So Sri Lanka’ brand idea at the 52nd ITB Berlin and rolled out the next phase of the strategic brand identity as planned by launching a first-of-its-kind three-minute film capturing the irresistible attractions of Sri Lanka, from the perspective of the country’s rich and diverse wildlife. The SLTPB released the film to evoke the essence of its new branding – ‘So Sri Lanka’ – which encapsulates the fact that Sri Lanka is more than just a destination, it’s a feeling. The film was presented to the global media at the ITB press conference on the 7th of March as the digital film launched across the UK, Germany, France, India and China supported by an innovative well executed, digitally led PR strategy.Over 80 journalists including leading media houses such as DPA (Deutsche Press eagentur – Germany´s leading newswire agency), Die Welt (national newspaper), N24 news station attended the press conference To entice experience-seeking travellers to visit Sri Lanka – named by Lonely Planet as the best country in the world to visit in 2019 – the film captures Sri Lanka’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture from the viewpoint of the country’s most extraordinary inhabitants: its wildlife. The film includes ‘up close and personal’ footage shot with (and by!) some of Sri Lanka’s most iconic residents –including elephants, turtles, leopards, blue whales and fishing cats. The award winning filming and production team behind the film all have extensive experience working with the BBC’s Natural History Unit, collectively responsible for some of its most spectacular series including Blue Planet II, Africa, Human Planet and Our Blue Planet, the digital campaign around Blue Planet II. The captivating three-minute film takes us on a wild journey across the island nation’s stunning landscapes. Footage includes following a newly hatched sea-turtle’s journey to the sea on the endless white-sand beaches of the south coast, to getting a soaring “eagle”-eye view of the spectacular ancient Sigiriya rock fortress; and watching the world’s largest elephants travel in their home in the sprawling Udawalawe National Park, as well as witnessing doves waking with the vibrant sunrise over Colombo. Speaking at the press conference the Hon Minister for Tourism, Wildlife and Christian Religious Affairs, John Amaratunge said “Sri Lanka is an evolving tourist market. In the last 10 years, Sri Lanka has seen a steady growth in arrivals and investments. Based on qualitative research findings on inbound tourists for the last three years, the most endearing feature of Sri Lanka as a destination brand is its authenticity. This authenticity is an attribute that is alive in our heritage, in our cuisine, in our landscape, in our architecture, in our culture and mostly in our people, we are inviting the world to experience So warm and welcoming Sri Lanka!” SLTPB Chairman, Kishu Gomes, added: “Sri Lanka is like nowhere else in the world. We wanted to visualise what travellers can do, see and feel when they visit Sri Lanka in a way that is as unique as our country – which is why we wanted to tell our story from the viewpoint of our amazing wildlife. Sri Lanka is one of the best Safari destinations outside of Africa, and we also have many other pleasures for visitors to discover; our beaches enjoy sunshine all year round, our people are warm and welcoming, and our food is abundantly flavourful. Sri Lanka must be felt to be believed, and we welcome all travellers to our country for an experience like no other.” He continued by saying that ‘Sri Lanka tourism has a vision to become the preferred destination brand of choice among global travellers, we are developing a strategically powerful amplifier brand than will support a very aggressive and ambitious marketing agenda. We are unlocking the untold power of brand Sri Lanka and empowering the global traveller to create the narrative with us – the amplifier effect of #sosrilanka is already evident and this is exactly what we need to navigate the challenges of a digital first world’ B
