THE DEPTHS OF COLOMBO'S NIGHT LIFE

With varying climates and Geography packed into a small island, Sri Lanka offers a range of adventures from the top of the mountains to the depths of the oceans. Other than taking a dip in the ocean or snorkelling, scuba diving and surfing are the most popular beach sports in the country. Scuba diving has a long history in the country. Today the ocean is filled with coral gardens, multitude of exotic fishes and ancient wrecks. Sri Lanka offers one of the best diving experiences in the world. Although comparatively new to the country, surfing too has made its mark in the Southern and Eastern coasts of the island for the last twenty five years. Varied landscape, wildlife, and archaeological sites offer excellent opportunities for trekking. Nature trails of exceptional interest include the Sinharaja rainforest, the cloud-forests of Horton Plains, the Knuckles (mountain range), and Hakgala Strict Natural Reserve. In addition, para-gliding, rock climbing, cave treks and mountain biking are possible.

Diving Surrounded by the Indian Ocean with its coral gardens, multitude of exotic fishes and ancient wrecks Sri Lanka offers one of the best diving experiences in the world. The colorful coral gardens along the southern coasts and old and new ship wrecks around the Galle harbor and little and great basses are the favourite Sri Lankan dive sites yet Kalpitiya, Ampara and Trincomalee in Eastern and Western coasts offering rare chances of wreck diving, skin diving and diving with dolphins. The ocean around Sri Lanka whispers of tales bygone, ones of regal maritime visits, of bandits and pirates and journeys of explorers and spice merchants. As you plunge into the warm waters and dive below, these stories come to life. The crystal clear waters of the Indian Ocean with a visibility of 20 meters (65ft) provide perfect conditions for diving. With wrecks as dated as the 18th Century dotting the seas, deep reefs and reef walls provide enthralling explorations for scuba divers. For the less adventurous on-shore coral reefs are ideal for snorkelling. The abundant marine life found around the island is surpassed only at Hikkaduwa in the southern coast where the reef is thought to contain more species of fish than the Great Barrier Reef.

Trekking and Hiking With multitude of roads winding through expanding mountains, lush green forests, paddy fields, parks and sleepy villages, Sri Lanka offers a plethora of opportunities to the keen hikers and trekkers. The highlands of Sri Lanka with virgin rain forests, sacred mountains, lush tea gardens and plains filled with rare birds and insects coupled with mild temperatures and welcoming smiles of the villagers provide the ideal setting to an unforgettable walking experience.

climbs to armature as well as experienced climbers. The newest experience in mountaineering in waterfall climbing with exciting climbs like the rock face of Bambarakanda waterfall, the tallest in the country. Hot Air Ballooning Roam the skies of Sri Lanka enjoying the signs and sites from the heavens above. Floating at heights of 500 to 2000 feet on average, effortlessly drift over the treetops, wildlife, lakes & rivers, cultural sites, local urban homesteads & landmarks like Sigiriya Rock. The sunrise rides are offered at day break to enhance the experience by accompanying the sights and sounds with magical experience of dawn. As the multi-coloured hot-air balloon drifts silently above the forest, adventure takes on a whole new meaning. Startled by the noise of a sudden burst of gas keeping the balloon aloft, a couple of peacocks take flight directly below the balloon’s basket, their outrageously long iridescent blue and emerald tail feathers streaming behind like a psychedelic jet stream. Several deer dart nervously across a clearing below, but the small herd of elephants continues feeding, utterly unfazed by this aerial intruder. Balloons that travel with the wind, make for one of the most surreal and tranquil sensations of flight. Following the initial adrenaline rush of the takeoff, one could settle down to absorb the wonder of the colourful earth below.

Whale Watching The ocean around Sri Lanka is the home to the gentle giants and the performers of the ocean. Dolphins and whales parade their presence at various locations around Sri Lanka during the months of December, January, February, March and April. Being situated on and around the migrating routes of whales and dolphins, Sri Lanka is in a vantage point to observe the migration of 26 species of cetaceans including blue whales, sperm whales, pilot whales, fin whales and a large variety of dolphins. The ever smiling, mischievous dolphins will put on a show while some of the oldest and the largest sea creatures, the humpback and the blue whales, will nonchalantly glide past you, when you embark on a whale/ dolphin watching excursion off the Southern, Eastern or the West coast of Sri Lanka. The ideal locations for whale watching would be Dondra Point (accessible from Galle, Hikkaduwa and Mirissa) and Trincomalee while the sea off Kalpitiya teems with an abundance of dolphins. With the whale watching season in Mirissa being in full swing and many local and foreign tourists gather to the Mirissa harbour. The Sri Lanka Coast Guards had increased their vigilance in monitoring the implementation of Sea Mammals Observation, Regulation and Control Regulations. To ensure that the Regulations are adhered by boat operators and tourists engaged in whale watching, the members of the Rohana Coast Guard base had been observing whale and dolphin watching activities in Mirissa since last year. The coast guards also make sure that the boat operators; crew and the tourists abide the safety precautions and regulations before and during their tour of observation. B

Colombo Night Life

Associated with warmth, respect, hospitality, and trust, Bally’s has earned itself a huge bouquet of clientele. The huge gaming area is always full of people, both locals and tourists. You can stake as low as USD100 and go upto millions. Players are treated to delicious snacks and complimentary drinks.

Love Bar is a strong call for anyone who’s willing to try something different with its quirky decor, well made drinks, and a generally easy crowd, and good vibes on both weekdays and weekends. They also offer a tiny nightclub style private partying area for those who are interested.

Further we suggest, don’t miss their special breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffets.

Taphouse by RnR isn't a club in the slightest sense, but an al fresco beer bar that serves up cheap beer, rum, and arrack in the Dutch Hospital. They have the additional entertainment segment of live bands on busy evenings, and you can be assured of a full drunken dance scene. This is quite a male-dominated scene though, and can get pretty rowdy.

BARS AND PUBS Clique is a top recommendation for full-fledged night clubs in the city. They generally play good music, know how to serve a proper meal. The entry policy is a bit strict, but it's worth it if you're looking for a good crowd and inventive cocktails (about Rs. 8001000 each). They're generally open till about 4 AM or later.

www.ballysmagazine.com

Which Way West in Liberty Arcade is a go-to Friday spot for the young crowd, predominantly for their freeflow cocktails for ladies, and relatively easy entrance. It's a good spot for drinks and dancing, and the crowd is

generally women-friendly. They also get in DJs so you can expect a pretty legit club-lounge experience. They're open till around 2 AM if we're not mistaken, but the frolicking kicks off pretty early on Fridays. Floor by O! And Shore by O! are relative daytime bar and beach bar, but it gets pretty rowdy at night. They charge entry for men (around Rs. 2000, redeemable), and generally have live music. B

WILDLIFE PHOTOGRAPHY

IS MORE THAN JUST CLICKING AWAY IN A JUNGLE

PICS BY NAYANAKA RANWELLA

www.ballysmagazine.com

THE DEPTHS OF COLOMBO'S NIGHT LIFE

A jungle, forest or sanctuary is the natural stage that is set for wildlife photographers to go about with their business. A wildlife photographer’s job is unlike that of a fashion photographer. To be able to fulfill such a role as that of a wildlife photographer, one needs to attribute himself with patience, dedication, discipline and know-how. One such wildlife photographer who is proficient in his field is Nayanaka Ranwella. He has been at it for over 10 years and says that it only gets worse for the animals with time especially when it comes to witnessing the plight of these creatures that would end up being victimized due to human carelessness. “Generally, if you acquire great interest about wildlife then the job becomes easy as long as you are disciplined. Unlike a catwalk ramp, where you cannot get witness real cats, for this type of photography you need opportunity. You need to understand the consequences and the risks that come with engaging in this role,” Nayanaka said.

Sri Lanka is a country with a rich biodiversity and abundance of wild animals such as leopards, elephants and marine life such as whales, dolphins. Not just our forests and lands but our coastline and surrounding ocean is full of marine life. “If we are not knowledgeable about what we are taking for granted right now, then there really is no use in doing what we do,” Nayanaka added. For a wildlife photographer, staying idle for hours on end might sound frustrating at some point but it also gets fulfilling the moment you capture an image that not only one day tends to change the life of the photographer who captured it but also, the creature itself at a moment in its life. Nayanaka also disclosed that with a constant presence within the realms of the jungle, someone such as him feels a great bond with the environment around him as well as with the animal in question. Harnessing all relevant equipment and going about his rounds on a regular basis without bringing interference to his role as an Editor for a reputed media house in the country,

June 2017 - July 2017

27

Nayanaka not only concentrates on the role of visiting places and capturing images but also is on the constant lookout on the welfare of the creatures he forges a bond with. “There are moments where I can identify particular animals such as leopards to the extent of having constantly observed them, studied them and been present in their territory whenever the time came for an image to be captured,” he acknowledged. There have been occasions where wild elephants have charged towards him and supportive trackers at electrifying speed that it is almost unbelievable to think that huge creatures such as elephants can tend to move so swiftly at given times. If not for the expertise of a handler or tracker, Nayanaka added that there were many a time he had stared death in the face. “It is a risky role being a wildlife photographer but you need to have that passion and love for these animals if you want to do the right job,” he further added.

Sometimes, there also happens to be greater advantages of working in this type of field that also tends to benefit these animals. Nayanaka recalled an instance when he was at one time contacted over the phone by a villager who exposed to him about an accident that had occurred in the vicinity. A wildlife officer himself had shot a knee of a famed wild tusker in the area, in defense. The news reached Nayanaka before even relevant authorities were notified of the incident. This showed the relationship some photographers forge with people in the vicinity and even though Nayanaka had managed to alert the right people to instigate action by transferring a vet to the area and ensuring the animal was comfortable, unfortunately, the elephant had passed away and Nayanaka disclosed that the incident was one of the saddest occurrences in his life as he had been well-acquainted with this elephant in particular as he had used to photograph it a number of times over the years and had felt that he knew the animal very well. These situations happen thanks to the carelessness and lack of knowledge about the subject at hand. People aggravate the surroundings in the wild and this greatly affects these animals

that only keep to themselves. Even jeep safaris are also disturbances for elephants and leopards in particular, who have been many a time been faced with accidents after been hit by passing vehicles in their territory. Not just the people but there are even some careless and selfish photographers who aim to capture the best image and end up vandalizing the area that the animal in question frequents. When it comes to occasions where photographers aim to capture bird images, these people end up trimming tree branches that at times serves as a barrier for many types of birds and their fledglings.

June 2017 - July 2017

29

“It is a sad situation and unfortunately, occurrence of the negative tends to overshadow the positive aspects of wildlife photography just because people are reckless and selfish, Nayanaka reiterated. Being out there, Nayanaka explained that he tends to become part of his surroundings. He witnesses their behaviour and lifestyles, their routines and issues. His family understands his way of life and his stance in his work as a wildlife photographer and completely supports him with the fact knowing he is constantly out there travelling places and looking for prospective image subjects. Nayanaka disclosed

that the younger generation need to understand that these animals have every right to survive and live the way they want and urges the public to consider the welfare of these animals and the need for us humans to live alongside them in harmony. B
