This research focused on the specific case study area of Xin Wu Jia Yuan (XWJY), a
New Resettlement Area in the BaNan district, South of Chongqing, undertaking

interviews with local residents to explore the impact of moving to the New
Resettlement Area on their well-being. This research proposes recommendations for
future urban development in practice in China regarding New Resettlement Areas and
offers salient lessons for urban redevelopment more broadly.
1.2 Aims and Objectives
The aim of this research is to explore how the transition from VIC to a New
Resettlement Area (NRA) has impacted on the well-being of local residents living in
XWJY, Chongqing, China
The aim of the research is underpinned by the following objectives:
• To explore the barriers and facilitators to residents successfully transitioning from the VIC to the New Resettlement Area.
• To identify how the move from the VIC to the New Resettlement Area has impacted on the well-being of local residents, taking into account economic, social, environmental and community considerations.
• To make recommendations for future urban policy and practice regarding VIC and New Resettlement Areas.
