• EDITOR’S NOTE •

Bloom where you are planted! “Though it might not always seem like it, you are in fact in the right country, at the right place and at the right time!” person had something positive to say. However, they all had a list of negatives. The second event happened when my cousin arranged to meet with me to get advice about potential countries to move to abroad. I have lived in 8 countries in my lifetime and so he believed I would be the best person to guide him out of “Tanzania, the land of opportunities for the few well connected”, he said. These two situations reminded me of a quote that my mother had once said to me when I was feeling despondent about the situation in a country I was living in. There is so much corruption, traffic jams are horrendous, the cost of living is too high….my list of complaints went on and on. Her response to me was wisely simple. “Bloom where you are planted”, she said. You see, despite all the hardships, unideal circumstances and, sometimes, utter nonsense, a lot of people are thriving in Tanzania. For parallel to hardships, there are untapped opportunities, and next to unideal circumstances, there are always creative solutions.

T

wo events that happened recently inspired me to write this editor’s note. The first happened when I assigned a story to a freelancer for our Tanzania Rising MAN Magazine section. The brief was simple: interview 10 people from various walks of life on what makes Tanzania a great place to be right now. A week later the writer got back to me and told me he could not do the story. Apparently, he had asked not 10 but 20 people, ranging from graduates to top managers, and not one single

In this issue of MAN magazine, we have interviewed, met and identified people and businesses that are thriving in Tanzania. They collectively demonstrate how, through sheer determination and with a dose of positivity, confidence and hard work, it is possible to bloom in an imperfect country. As you flip through the magazine, I suggest you linger on our Tanzania Rising section - if not for the inspiration, then certainly to remind yourself, though it might not always seem like it, you are in fact in the right country, at the right place and at the right time!

EMBRACING NEW VENTURES

A

s we approach the end of the 3rd quarter of 2015, we are very pleased with the progress MAN Magazine is making. We are especially delighted with the increasing number of subscribers who are preferring the convenience of having the magazine delivered to them every time a new issue comes out. What is even more humbling to us is the increase in the number of readers and subscribers from outside the boarders of Tanzania. We have now partnered with the recently launched, proudly Tanzanian MPaper App to stock our magazines. Hence, should you prefer a soft copy of the current and previous issues, you can easily purchase them from the MPaper App from anywhere in the world. This is yet another innovation we are embracing to bring the engaging and relevant content quickly and conveniently to you. Another new venture the Eurocom group is excited about is the recent opening of the Jozi Lounge, located in Msasani Peninsula. The place is fast becoming a hotspot to unwind; whether that is through dancing, karaoke, catching up with friends over some whisky on the rocks or enjoying a delicious meal with your loved one. We are always happy to meet our MAN Magazine readers at Jozi Lounge.

IT Company with an edge

Jamix Solutions Ltd Director of Jamix Solutions Ltd,

Moses Kamau

I

f you really position yourself well, the opportunities are endless.” Fine words by the Director of Jamix Solutions Ltd, Moses Kamau. Jamix solutions is an IT company established in 2013. The company specialises in high-performance and resilient IT solutions for smaller start-ups, big enterprises and individuals. Jamix was born as a result of two things. Firstly, the noticing of a gap in the provision of resilient and professional IT services in the country, and secondly, out of awareness of the importance of IT governance, audit and risk management. We spoke to the company director to learn more about these gaps and how people and businesses can benefit from the services being offered at Jamix.

16 • www.manmagazinetz.com

“We’ve successfully managed to train a lot of professionals and individuals from different industries in the country and delegates from organizations such as Tanesco, Sumatra, UTT and TPA”.

Can you state some of the specialist services provided by Jamix Solutions? Governance, Audit and Risk Management and consulting. Nowadays this has become one of the most important services with regards to IT security because the service adds value to an organisation. It helps to identify risks, assess design of controls and test its effectiveness thus setting up an environment for sustainable growth. Enterprise Resource Planning. This is a business management software and resource that allows an organization to use a system of integrated applications, combining all facets of operation for small or large businesses. This can include product planning, development, manufacturing, sales, marketing, CRM etc. Training services. We have a state of the art training and learning centre located at the Golden Jubilee Towers, Ohio Street, Dar es Salaam with plans to open satellite training centres in the country where we offer

CISM certification, CISA certfication, advanced Excel courses, business intelligence software training services and related IT management courses. We have sessions for both corporations and individuals and we are the only official authorised training institute in Tanzania to offer such certification. Our other services include data security, data recovery and several other IT related services.

What has been the company’s biggest accomplishment since its inception in Tanzania? The biggest accomplishment, I would say, is the setting up of the training centre. We’ve successfully managed to train a lot of professionals and individuals from different industries in the country and delegates from organizations such as Tanesco, Sumatra, UTT and TPA. I believe that when you offer capacity development to delegates from such organisations, you are not just offering and adding value to the individual, but the organization as whole.

• TOP TECH COMPANY •

Cyber-crime is a subject of concern for many companies which conduct their business through the internet. What kinds of security does your company offer to businesses in order to keep their systems safe? Firstly, I would say that the biggest problem we face in the East African region is that the people are taking a very pedestrian approach to the issue of cyber-crime and its systems. We leave our information at risk, and information is the key asset to any organization. We offer training on proper ways to protect vital information. We also offer data recovery, data back-up sites and data security products. All our solutions are tailored to meet the clients’ needs. For SMEs we have cloud-based solutions and we also offer solutions for large corporations with their own independent data centres and recovery sites depending on means, financial capabilities and necessity of security level.

What has been the general response your clients have had after utilizing the services of your company? They are very happy and impressed with the quality of our services. People call up asking for our services because they have just done their homework. A client will always find value in what you offer. There is a misconception that IT services in the country are expensive; they are not. Things only become expensive when you are not offering what the client wants; if you give them what they want, they will pay for it.

What advice would you give to any organisation which does not think taking precautions against cybercrime is a necessity? I say they should invest in both physical and system security. It can make or break the company. The moment you lose data, you lose a lot.

We need to also take an effort in sensitising the companies. We have this in the pipeline: monthly seminars where people can come, exchange ideas and see what we offer, at no cost.

Showcase: A tour at Renault

We’ve noticed a growing demand for Renault cars, which we’ve seen hovering around the city and roads of Dar over these past six months. To get a better understanding of Renault’s brand and prospects, we toured at Renault’s showroom at the CMC grounds, to get an enhanced knowledge of its top 3 cars in demand.

Renault Duster Since its launch in 2010 and its progressive marketing in different areas of the world, Renault Duster has conquered more than 400,000 customers, and is ranked in the top 3 of the best-selling SUVs in the world. The SUV, now available in Tanzania, offers not only a reassuring exterior design but also a lot of roominess inside. The Renault Duster is packed with good level of equipment and practical features.

User review by Jumanne “I am a proud owner of the Renault Duster” Look and Style: Awesome, definitely a road catcher. Lot of people watching the car while on the road and we have no doubt in choosing this car as our first car. Comfort: Very spacious for front and rear passengers. Good family car. I have 2 kids aged 3 and 5. They always play at the rear seat. Pickup: Good, nice to drive in the city with heavy traffic. My spouse drives very well in heavy traffic too. Best Features: The package of the car is good, with good

22 • www.manmagazinetz.com

ground clearance of 205mm. Nice to drive with good road visibility and motorized mirror control. Electric side mirror , CD+MP3 player with AUX and Bluetooth for Mobile where controls are behind the steering which is easy to access. You will get used to it after few drives. Interior Quality is good compared to other models within the same segment. Needs to improve: More airbags for rear passengers rather than just 2 in front. Overall Experience: Enjoying my first car. Excellent mileage of 13km/1lts. Very comfortable on long journeys. I believe it is the best car in the SUV segment.

Drive in luxury with the Renault Fluence. Thanks to its electric power steering, Renault Fluence combines precise driver feedback with a swift and accurate response to give you real steering precision. With dual-zone climate control, both you and your passenger can adjust the temperature at any time.

User review by Suryaprakash “What a drive!” Look and Style: It has this amazing aerodynamic structure which gives it a really stylish look, especially with its wide windshield. Comfort: I can sum it up as a very enjoyable driving experience from the comfort level of each occupant to its HVAC unit. Pickup: I have experienced that it powers the engine to zoom towards a top speed of approximately 185kmph, which is rather decent for such a car. Best features: It has quite a number of crucial safety features especially 6 airbags. Onboard computer, Bluetooth for mobile. Whereas, it fits as a family car and its fuel economy is up to the mark.

Renault Fluence

Needs to improve: Interior to be upgraded to leather. Overall experience: 8 out of 10. Really good.

New Renault Koleos, with intelligent 4x4 transmissions, is a genuinely versatile vehicle. It is comfortable and agile in and about town, yet it boasts real off-road ability and is ideal for escaping the crowd thanks to its all-wheel drive transmission, which was developed within the framework of the Renault-Nissan Alliance. It reasserts the dynamic personality of a luxury SUV with an elegant, more expressive front-end styling, while its carefully-finished interior delivers the expected package of refined features and travelling comfort.

User review by Milly “My car of choice” Look and Style: I would describe it as rugged elegance. Plus the rear end is agreeable in terms of the dashing look it gives to the car. Definitely something to boast about. Comfort: It is super spacious inside with large comfortable front seats and a rear 60/40 split that’s capable of carrying three adults in reasonable comfort. Pickup: Nothing to complain of; with keyless start the handling is really good for this type of vehicle. Best features: Being a music fanatic, I love the redesigned audio interface, which has Arkamys Sound System. The other thing I fancy about this car is the fuel economy. Also the Cruise control for long journeys is awesome and it is easy to drive on and off road thanks to i4x4 which changes the modes according to the terrain it detects. Needs to improve: Though the boot is relatively large, the sleek slope of the roof limits the size of boxy items, especially if the rear seats are in use. Overall experience: A perfect car for city drives and the day to day routine

Today he commands and owns a multifaceted and a multimillion dollar group of companies and yet, he has never forgotten where he came from. “I had a good life as a very young boy, but when my father passed away everything changed. We lost everything and went from having everything to nothing”. He had to start working at a very young age to support his family. The one thing this experience has taught him is - life is indeed unpredictable. “Tomorrow I could be without shelter or food. Who is going to help me if I do not treat everyone I know well”. Be it his accolades, his success or his personal life, Gulam Ismail has achieved success despite the hardships surrounding him.

Today Gulam Ismail is at the helm of an empire he created especially in the hospitality industry. Wellworth Hospitality (the hospitality division of Wellworth Group), is at a very vital position of becoming the largest local Tanzanian owned hospitality group in East Africa. “We are in the process of literally creating 1,600 hotel rooms in the Tanzanian Tourism Market (including our current available operations). This inventory of rooms will allow us to accommodate upto 3,200 guests a day, making us the largest local company with such a capacity unmatched by any other single owned hospitality company in Tanzania. We will therefore become a big force in promoting Tourism in Tanzania and will also resultantly create employment

and contribute greatly to the country’s economy.” He tells the story of his beginning in the hospitality business. The first project he ever did was the former state owned Kunduchi Beach Hotel. That was 20 years ago. He bought the hotel which was in a very dire state of disrepair not really grasping the full scope of his endeavor. The Vice President at the time only told him one thing, “Gulam, I hope you know what you are doing”. “Kunduchi Hotel was being washed away. Erosion had claimed so much of the land and had reached the Hotel’s foundations. In addition, the hotel building and infrastructure was in a bad condition and had completely lost its glory,” he tells me this showing me pictures of what Kunduchi Beach Hotel looked like before. “But being determined I set out to find experts to help me reclaim the land and prevent further erosion”. Unfortunately he found none experienced enough to help him and the data collected by previous researchers was not too helpful. He decided to conduct his own research. “I said to myself if someone else can learn about this, I can too and I will save this hotel.” And he did just that despite huge challenges, limited resources and other difficulties like sourcing finance! He believes that with determination and hardwork, you can achieve anything. Out of all the activities of the Wellworth Group, delivering quality and value in the hospitality sector is where they excel the best. For example, in Manyara and Ngorongoro, the company has recently created one of the best Safari Lodges in East Africa. “We are about setting standards, this has allowed us to excel. Our focus is on creating world class facilities at reasonable rates and providing exceptional service to all our clients

and guests”. Future plans include expanding the Wellworth Group to other countries. “We are yet to hear of a Tanzanian owned hospitality company becoming multi-national by investing in other countries. Its common practice for foreigners to come and acquire land, build hotels and to invest in Tanzania. Now it’s the turn of Tanzanian companies to be the foreign investors in other countries”. He wraps up the interview by sharing three key aspects that have lead to his success. Striving for excellence is first in creating the right product. Second, is creativity, “introduce what is not in the market. For example, we were the only investor to create the first and largest water park in Tanzania. No one had done it before. Third is having a vision. When I started out, I envisioned that this is where I wanted to be. When I see the great reviews our hotels receive, I get the sense of we are achieving our aim. At the end of the day, it is important to remember, success doesn’t just come and find you, you have to go out and get it”.

Quickly and creamily, it melts down like a light brown stroke of paint to the canvas of the white basin. It is not paint, it is not even truly ice cream but gelato, and the great artist is Mercy Kitomari. Her business is called Nelwa’s Gelato, a shortening of her middle name Nenelwa, which means “I’m forgiven” in her father’s native tongue, Gogo.

• MOVER & SHAKER •

“I FINANCED MY BUSINESS OUT OF MY OWN POCKET, WITH THE ASSISTANCE FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY. MY SUCCESS MAKES A MOCKERY OF THE ADVICE I WAS BEEN GIVEN: THAT I WOULD REQUIRE $200,000 US DOLLARS TO BEGIN A SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS” advice she had been given: that she would need 200,000 US dollars to begin a sustainable business. She continues to succeed, despite starting with much less, because of the dedication and intelligence she applies to her work.

T

hough born in Lesotho, Mercy has spent nearly her whole life in Tanzania. She later travelled to England to study at the London School of Management. While in London, Mercy took the job of an usher to young children after school, in which she would take them to see the sights of London and then for treats in city squares where the options for sweets, ice cream and gelato are abundant. This was how she was inspired to start her business. If the Londoners, in the comparatively mild and rainy climate of Northern Europe, deserve to be treated after long day’s work, then certainly so do Tanzanians, who work daily in heat and humidity that would have the Brits slogging to their air conditioning units. Mercy’s continuing success story is of a kind that is becoming more common in today’s Tanzania. After thoroughly researching the problems and considerations of starting a business, as well as recipes and special problems in the world of gelato, Mercy set about investing in herself. She financed her business out of her own pocket, with the assistance from friends and family. Her success makes a mockery of the

That is not to say that it was, or is, easy. Because she had little to invest at the start, the machinery that Nelwa’s depends on is outdated. The actual gelato machine, no matter how eagerly it spits out the savoury cream, cuts her potential profits up to forty percent, for various reasons. A newer model, Mercy said, would benefit her hugely, though most are still slightly out of her price range. Competition, too, is a continuing opposition to Mercy’s success, as both commercial chains and local entrepreneurs challenge the base of clientele she has built. In a story of treachery, one of these local businesses was started by a former Nelwa’s Gelato employee, who broke off after presumably benefiting from Mercy’s experience. Nevertheless, things are still looking up for Nelwa’s Gelato. Mercy was

selected as a member of the Tony Elumelu Entrepreneurship Foundation class of 2015, a distinction that rewards her with benefits including mentorship, a resource library, a 2-day entrepreneurship boot camp and a small amount of capital funding, which could potentially be increased if Nelwa’s Gelato continues its success. She even received a call in the course of our interview that showcased her success and the reasons for it: the customer requested large amounts of raspberry passion, mango lemon and strawberry ice cream, testament to the 30 flavours offered and to Nelwa’s’ production capacity. Mercy Kitomari is representative of a growing class of young Tanzanians, those who have earned success through hard work and intelligence yet who still espouse the social values of a modern Tanzania. The more praise and investment that Mercy and entrepreneurs like her receive, the more quickly the Tanzanian entrepreneurial spirit will flourish. Paintings or sculptures made of ice cream would melt in the sun, but Nelwa’s Gelato succeeds anyway, a story of art in taste and humanity.

Born to design

“Over the past three or four years I have had the opportunity to exhibit my designs at the Mozambique Fashion Week, the Angolan Fashion Week, the African Fashion International Week in Johannesburg and the London Fashion Week”

Manju Msita,

Talented & one of a kind Fashion Designer People think it’s funny when I say this but my inspiration to be a fashion designer originated from my uncle because of how he used to dress. However, it took me longer than expected to pursue this dream because I didn’t have the money or equipment to start a business.” This is a common trend being faced by many up and coming fashion designers in this part of the world, but Manju strongly believes that “Africa has the opportunity to dress the world and not wait for the rest of the world to dress Her.” These are inspirational words from Manju Msita, Tanzania´s very own talented and one of a kind designer. MAN Magazine´s Isaac Luseko spoke to Manju at his studio in Chang’ombe about several aspects of his growing brand including the reasons he has mostly been underground as well as his future plans.

Is Fashion designing a talent or is it something one needs to study for?

yet you remain relatively underground. Why have you not sought fame as a designer?

Frankly, no one on earth can teach you how to design. By someone teaching you how to design, you will most likely end up doing their designs. For instance, what I am using right now is just my talent. However, things have now changed. School is just as important because it acts as a facilitator which provides tools to improve and act upon the talent.

I think that my personality contributes to me remaining relatively underground. I just leave my work to speak for itself. I believe that if you’ve got talent and you use that talent in such a way that people appreciate, then it is easy for you to penetrate.

You have been in business for a long time and have dressed some members of parliament, presidents, honorable ministers, ambassadors and celebrities, and

Simple – my style. I don’t copy anybody. I do believe that I have been given the talent to design, so there is no need for me to imitate others. I have to also satisfy myself that this is something that can sell, that people

me is during the middle of the night. I have to first rest then wake up when everybody is asleep because by then I end up having a lot of concentration; it is quiet and nobody is bothering you. Then I come out with something unexpectedly beautiful. Have you recently taken part in any international fashion shows? If yes, what did you learn from such an experience? Oh yes, indeed. Over the past three or four years I have had the opportunity to exhibit my designs at the Mozambique Fashion Week, the Angolan Fashion Week, the African Fashion International Week in Johannesburg and the London Fashion Week. It’s truly a wonderful experience. Although it’s quite an expensive process to take part in those fashion shows, you get to meet different people with different minds. It’s actually very interesting. You get an exposure, you see what others are doing and you can see their talents. You can also compare yourself to see where you are and learn from that. In your opinion, what makes a MAN fashionable and stylish? You have to be smart and have to stand out from the crowd. I want to create the WOW effect when creating my designs and a fashionable and stylish MAN often wears clothes that even when they are simple, create a wow effect. What impresses you and disappoints you about the fashion industry in Tanzania today? I’m highly impressed by the growth of the fashion industry. It’s growing fast. If you compare the fashion industry a decade will appreciate it, and that people will understand. My designs originate from my own style, creativity and personality. What does the word designing mean to you and how do you go about designing your products? To me designing means creating. If you want to create something, I think you need peace, concentration and quietness. The best time to design for

ago and now, there were only a few fashion designers then but now there are plenty. The biggest disappointment so far has been lack of material. When you talk about fabrics in this country, you are talking about fabrics of the lowest quality. When I was in China last year, I came across a store which had all the fabrics out there in the world. It was in that shop that I managed to pick out a sample which had a similar look and feel to leather but was surprisingly made out of cotton. So in comparison, we don’t really have that kind of choice locally. Where is your focus right now in terms of Manjou designs? I’m focusing more on expanding the range of products I design. I want to focus more on designing shoes because people have been impressed with my shoes as well as my belts and wallets. I also plan to expand into designing unique house décor items such curtains, bed sheets and lamp sheds. Any advice for up and coming fashion designers in Tanzania? You don’t have to copy. I see so many people calling themselves fashion designers but most of them are just imitating other people’s work. Nowadays, everyone wants to become a fashion designer but sadly most of them cannot tell the difference between a fashion designer and a wardrobe stylist. That is misleading because doing so will make others think that copying is creating which is not true. The fashion designers don’t have to think that copying is designing. They should instead discover and explore their own creativity.

The forgotten heroes of WW1 100 years on, it is time to finally remember the thousands who fought and died in the service of indifferent empires on a distant continent.

A

skaris were initially hired by European explorers and trading companies to suppress competition from Arabic and Swahili merchants. After these companies foundered and various governments took over the colonies, they began to retain a permanent force of soldiers to maintain control.

The askaris came in many divisions: The German Schutztruppe, the Belgian Force Publique, the British King’s African Rifles and the Portuguese Companhias Indigenas. As early as 1889, askaris were being used to suppress revolts (most notably the 1905-7 Maji Maji Uprising) and conquer new territory. They were paid well, particularly those under German command, and often enjoyed other privileges, such as exemption from colonial taxes. However, they were often trained and equipped with outmoded weapons. But then the First World War began, and askaris became indispensible, playing a vital role in some of the conflict’s most gruelling campaigns.

The statue stands at the exact centre of downtown Dar es Salaam, guarding the roundabout between Maktaba Street and Samora Avenue, rifle pointed towards the harbour. It has been there for nearly a hundred years, and passers-by barely glance at its weathered bronze form. Yet the monument commemorates an aspect of the First World War that had a huge impact on thousands of people across Africa and beyond: the askari soldiers who fought and died for the European powers who treated them so callously in return. It is often forgotten, especially in the West, that a third of the ‘British’ army alone consisted of foreign troops, including 134,000 from the colonies.

Most of the fighting in Africa consisted of short raids and endless marches across vast stretches of the continent. The German commander, Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck, was heavily out numbered by Belgian and British forces, so his aim was simply to evade capture and force the Allies to divert more troops and resources to Africa. What ensued was in many ways a tragically destructive game of cat-andmouse, with Allied forces pursuing LettowVorbeck, who would fight short battles and then retreat as more of his opponents began to catch up.

32 • www.manmagazinetz.com

Although thousands of troops died in the fighting (3,300 at the Battle of Mahiwa alone), the askaris’ biggest killer was disease. An estimated 75% of British casualties in East Africa were caused by malnutrition, illness and exhaustion. Those who suffered worst were the Carrier Corps (after whom Kariakoo Market in Dar es Salaam is named). Despite their backbreaking work constructing roads and lugging ammunition, they were allotted fewer calories than European soldiers. Medical care was completely inadequate - in 1914, there was only one doctor per 1,000 men. A shocking 20% of the Carrier Corps had died by the end of the war.

Was it a total waste of human life, this four-year campaign during which conscription and war casualties depopulated whole villages? No less so than the endless ranks of young men gunned down for the sake of a few metres’ advancement on the Western Front. And yet, when we hold international remembrance ceremonies for the defenders of Flanders Fields, we scarcely spare a thought for the askaris who died in the savannahs of East Africa. Even directly after the war, many returned home without any form of pension or compensation. Now, 100 years on, it is time to finally remember the thousands who fought and died in the service of indifferent empires on a distant continent. Hopefully, on the centenary of the Armistice in 2018, someone will lay a wreath beside the askari statue on Samora Avenue, the one visible token of gratitude from the British Empire towards the soldiers who laid down their lives to defend it.

These scrap metal sculptures are the main export of Wonder Workshop, a unique Tanzanian craft company which is now celebrating its tenth anniversary. But these original creations are not the only thing that makes the Workshop special: nearly all its employees are disabled people who would probably otherwise be jobless and struggling to survive. The organisation was set up in 2005 by Paul Joynson-Hicks of Blue Mango Photography. Initially called Wonder Welders, it took in disabled people from the streets and trained them to recycle scrap metal into imaginative sculptures for homes, gardens and offices. The products ranged from sports trophies to candle holders

to life-size statues of lions, and were soon snapped up by individuals and corporations alike. This initial success, along with support from various organisations, allowed the company to hire more staff and train them in new disciplines besides welding. Today, Wonder Workshop employs 42 people in five different departments, creating sculptures, jewellery, paper goods, wooden art, soaps and candles. One of the many features that set the Workshop apart from larger craft companies is that each product is unique. Many are specifically commissioned by business owners to reflect their corporations’ values in visual form. People can send in pictures, measurements or even just a few words about what they want their sculpture to express, and the welders will design a product to cater exactly to these demands. Whether you want

to give your child a wooden model of their favourite dinosaur, present your Valentine with a personalised necklace or create an inspiring office space for yourself and your colleagues, Wonder Workshop can help. As well as perking up the appearance of various homes and workplaces around Tanzania and beyond, this company is benefitting the country in two important ways. Firstly, it is one of the few organisations to offer employment to disabled people, enabling them to support their families and take pride in their profession like anyone else. And secondly, by recycling vast quantities of scrap wood, metal, paper and glass, Wonder Workshop is helping to keep the crowded streets of Dar es Salaam a little cleaner. May it continue to thrive and expand as it enters its second decade of production.

Tailored to be an icon

The 14 successful business principles of Sheria Ngowi

36 • www.manmagazinetz.com

• COVER STORY •

Sheria Ngowi is arguably Tanzania’s finest fashion designer. The fashion industry in Tanzania has been evolving; it is now a highly respected profession and the exposure the designers get internationally and locally is a big change from what it might have been a decade ago. But Sheria Ngowi is beyond a fashion designer; he has a clear vision of where he wants to take his brand and has mastered the art of mixing creativity and commerce. Here he shares some key business practices that have seen his couture brand, which started in 2009, grow into a company currently employing 35 people, whom he fondly calls his ‘dream team’. MAN Magazine´s Tasneem Jivi visited Sheria Ngowi´s flagship store with the main intention of getting to know the business practices he has implemented, which have led the Sheria Ngowi brand to become one of the most iconic in the country. Here she reports on the 14 successful business principles of Sheria Ngowi.

• COVER STORY •

He has a growth plan In the six years since the Sheria Ngowi brand was launched, it has experienced tremendous growth. However, growth in business is often a result of behind-the-scenes planning, strategising and vision. At the moment, Sheria Ngowi has a flagship store in Masaki. Behind the scenes, there is an expansion plan to open more stores, not only in Tanzania but across the borders too. There are also plans to increase the range of attire made. He explained that “currently, focus is on the black label, which is high-end and exclusive. Next will be a blue label targeted at mid-range income earners and a red label aimed at companies and government officials. Finally, we will in the near future launch a white label, which will be something like H&M, aimed at all walks of life.”

He represents his brand

“I am the mastermind and I am the blueprint of this brand”. 38 • www.manmagazinetz.com

Sheria Ngowi is the face of the Sheria Ngowi brand. He states that the advantage of representing the brand himself compared with hiring another face to represent it is that “as an individual, I have the way I behave, and that behaviour is reflected and represented in the brand. Factors such as my attitude, classiness and simplicity are essential part of the Sheria Ngowi brand. He adds that “when branding your company, you need to divide it into two branches – brand as a brand and brand as a person. Essentially, the brand defines you and you define the brand.”

• COVER STORY •

Ignores his competitors In most, if not all, businesses, there are bound to be competitors in your industry. However, Sheria Ngowi has a simple yet effective way of handling competitors in his field. He states, “I never compete with anybody; I compete with myself. I don’t think it is necessary for me to scout out the competition. I am the one who has the vision, I am the mastermind and I am the blueprint of this brand. I understand where I want the brand to be in 5 years’ time; hence I don’t have to struggle and challenge myself to compete with anybody”.

He is patient In the growing “I want success now” culture, patience is often forgotten as a key attribute to building a successful business. However, Sheria Ngowi understands that patience is essential in building a successful business brand. He says, “I don’t force myself to reach the top immediately. I understand that everything has a time. I want to go slow and learn the cuts and crosses of my brand. All good things come with time. Business is not like politics – business requires calculations, research, planning, good management and a good team to successfully grow it. To get all these factors right, patience is essential.”

His brand stands out Simple, elegant and classy: that is how Sheria Ngowi describes his typical client. Each Sheria Ngowi outfit has a certain DNA that makes it stands out. What is this DNA? Sheria Ngowi hints that what makes his suits stand out is “the cut, the fitting, the colour combination and the finishing”. Indeed, his compliment-inducing and admiration-prompting suits have been the go-to outfit for many stylish men in the country.

www.manmagazinetz.com • 39

• COVER STORY •

His work has meaning All Sheria Ngowi´s collections represent something that has inspired him. His most recent collection was named the ‘pride collection’. Asked how the name came about, he states that it signifies that we as Tanzanians should be proud of our roots and where we come from. “It was a message for the youth: that we are here in a very peaceful country and continent as whole because of our past leaders, and this is one of the most important aspects that people take for granted. To have so many ethnicities staying in peace in one place is a big deal, something that not many countries have. This is the message/story behind my collection. As an artist, you need to bring something out through your art. For example, Bob Marley through music, Sheria through his fashion statement.”

40 • www.manmagazinetz.com

• COVER STORY •

Believes in himself Sheria Ngowi started his company with just $300. His suits, which once sold for $150, now sell for up to $1355. Some of his suits even sell for up to $3000. He is a true exemplar of someone who was determined to achieve and had a belief in himself that success was possible. “What I am trying to bring to mind is that one should always remember that whatever you dream, it is possible, and success is achieved because you believe in yourself”.

Learns from his critics No matter how successful a business is, there will always be critics who will point out something wrong with the business. However, Sheria Ngowi has learnt to embrace the criticism and use it as a channel for growth. He states that “when I started this business, the biggest challenge I faced was criticism about my age. I was, and still am, too young to have achieved so much. I have heard sarcastic comments such as, Oh, Sheria Ngowi is a big name but you look too young for it – how did you achieve so much? They implied that I was less experienced but the quality of my work often silenced the critics. I never ignore my critics, but use their comments to my advantage and learn from them”. He adds that “when you create, you need to take criticism positively, be flexible enough to accept it, and never make it personal with your client; this will disrupt the way you do business. Understand your client, and control the situation accordingly. If you bring personal grudges into your business, you kill your business.”

Balances creativity with commerce Many creative businesses fail, not because the owners are not talented, but simply because they have not learnt to balance creativity with commerce. This is one mistake that Sheria Ngowi is sure not to make. He says, “With creativity, you need to have three things, which I have learnt over time, when you enter any business. These are the quality of the product, the finishing of the product, and most importantly, the customer service. When you present a good quality product, no client will complain about it. When you have good finishing, everyone will talk about it, and when you excel in your customer service, you retain your

www.manmagazinetz.com • 41

• COVER STORY •

customers. Lastly, you need to intermix creativity with commerce. I will give you an example: a client walks into your flagship store – learn to listen and understand the client before you discuss numbers.”

Knows his limits Fashion designers are often known for being eccentric and bold. Sheria Ngowi is certainly bold but he too has his limits. Asked if there is something he would never wear, he laughs and promptly answers, “Yes, women’s clothes. The rest I am comfortable with.”

Wakes up early There is a universally accepted habit of most successful people: they wake up early and utilise the early hours for personal and spiritual growth. Sheria Ngowi falls into this category of early risers. “I wake up every single day at 6am for prayers, reflection about my day and to remind myself who I am and how humble I need to be. I remember the people who gave me strength, such as my family, my wife to be and my clients. I also have a very good breakfast, which I think is very important before heading to work.”

Aims to leave a legacy Starting a business is easy to do. Leaving a legacy, however, is something only a few manage to achieve. Sheria Ngowi wants to leave a legacy. What would you like your legacy to be?, we asked him. His answer: “To be remembered as one of the youngest and most successful Tanzanians. I also hope to leave an inspirational message to the youth worldwide that everything is possible no matter what your age, your education status, your family background or what country you come from. I want to leave a legacy but I also want to keep the legacy of my father alive. He was a very smart and simple person and a very straight forward person. The way he used to dress was so impressive and he had a humble approach to people. He passed away in 2005 and I want my brand to reflect him.”

Balances his life It is often stated that one advantage of owning a business is that it allows one to control one’s time. So when asked how he manages to balance the various aspects of his life, Sheria Ngowi states that “Having my own business and my dream team, I don’t have to struggle much with balancing the different aspects of my life. I work hard but I also make sure to make time to relax. When I get time, I sleep. I work more than 15 hours a day, so for me, relaxing is to slump on my sofa, watch TV and sleep. To be creative, you need to have peace of mind, which I call having mental peace. For this you definitely need to exercise, eat healthily and don’t invest in unnecessary things – for instance, I avoid bars or late nights – it helps.”

He has a clear vision The rise of the Sheria Ngowi brand from its humble beginnings to its current success is a story that has been well told. However, perhaps less known is the crystal clear vision that Sheria Ngowi has for his brand. He states that plans are currently in the pipeline to construct a new company headquarters. “The building will be huge, but still simple and well designed. It will pave the way for a new generation of fashion designers to think that we can channel the western fashion industry to come to us and not the other way around,” he says. What stands out about Sheria Ngowi´s brand vision is that it clearly aims to take the African brand to the world, and as he says, “the vision is to make the Sheria Ngowi brand the best in Africa. There is so much this continent has to offer, we just need to believe in ourselves.”

When I was assigned to research and write about Alexander Amosu, I had no idea of who he was. But the more I read about him, the more I became impressed by this young millionaire who exemplifies the phrase ‘think big!’ For those, like me, who have not heard of Alexander Amosu before, here is a brief.

urrently, Amosu is at the helm of Amosu Couture, a company that custom-designs and sells diamond-encrusted mobile phones, iPads, headphones and other accessories. His journey to success began when he founded RnB Ringtones, a company which grossed over $1.5 million in its first year of operation. The company simply sold RnB mobile ring tones after spotting a gap in the market. In 2004, he sold the company for $15 million to a British mobile value added services provider and used the funds to set up Amosu Couture. Amosu Couture is not your ordinary fashion brand. It does a few things differently, uniquely differently. Think about it: how much would you be willing to spend on a men’s suit? $1,000? $10,000? Well, this Nigerianborn, London-based designer and entrepreneur actually found a buyer for his eye-wateringly pricey $100,000 creation. This earned him a place in the Guiness Book of World Records as the creator of the most expensive suit in the world. Armani eat your heart out! Amosu, now based in London, was quoted saying, “With me, there is never a satisfaction to success and I am always thinking about how to make it better.

He is among the African millionaires under 40, made his first million (pounds) at the age of 24 and he is living proof that a good idea, well executed, can transform your life.

As a matter of fact, I haven’t achieved 10 percent of my ability.” At age 38, he is worth millions of dollars and makes his money by personalising bespoke suits and mobile phones with very expensive diamonds and selling them to the privileged few with the abundant cash to afford these goods. The company has mastered the art of providing unique fashion pieces and accessories to the wealthy. But do people actually buy these products? “Of course people do!” a spokesman from Amosu Couture told Forbes. He continued, “We don’t make products for just anyone; our products are designed for a privileged few. Even in recession, we always have buyers. We never have a problem with buyers”.

hree Tanzanian taste-makers, Deogratius Kithama of EATV’s hip and trendy Nirvana, Big Brother Africa 2014 grand winner and photographer Idris Sultan, and the founder of STUDIORED Public Relations, Tanya Mulamula, were invited to be a part of the Hennessy 250 Tour. The trio flew to Johannesburg, South Africa, one of only five cities in the world to host the Hennessy 250 Tour. The tour has previously visited Guangzhou, China, Moscow, Russia, and New York, USA, and will shortly reach its final destination of Paris, France. Speaking about the decision to bring the tour to South Africa, together with tastemakers flown in from various countries in Africa, Hennessy Chairman & CEO Bernard Peillon explains, “Hennessy has always cultivated lasting friendships with other countries and cultures: our very DNA drives us to adapt to local customs and values, and to help set the trends that mark our era. Hennessy — or “Henny”, as it is known to many fans today – shares two culturally compatible worldviews. We share a philosophy of self-fulfillment that inspires us to move forward, break down barriers, and innovate in ways that are both great and small.” The tour´s highlight was the Gala Dinner held at the prestigious Inanda Club in downtown Johannesburg. The star-studded affair featured VIP guests such as Maurice Hennessy (8th generation of the Hennessy family), actress and singer Nandi Mngoma, actress Nomzamo Mbatha, socialite Maps Maponyane, model and former Miss South Africa Vanessa Carreira, Nigerian singer-songwriter 2Face and our very own Idris Sultan. The guests were presented with the Hennessy 250 Collector Blend, specially created by Hennessy Master Blender and Taster, Yann Fillioux. The blend was accompanied by a flavoursome pairing menu that included opulent dishes such as crab soufflé, foie gras and a rich mango chocolate pie for dessert. The exhibition takes inspiration from Hennessy’s legacy itself and will - through the eyes of the chosen artists - tell the remarkable story of its journey, spanning an unprecedented seven generations. As Mr Peillon would say, “This milestone is a testament to the legacy that Hennessy has achieved. What we know for sure is: One must never give up. Never stop believing. Achieve what others might think impossible.”

The Boiling Point

If you are a tea lover and haven’t tried freshly brewed tea (chai) at KT Shop, then you’re really missing out on a traditional culinary experience in Dar es Salaam.

“The secret of success is in helping out and working alongside the staff.”

I

t comes with crispy, flavoured hot kebabs with chutney, served right off the pan. Many travel distances for this chai experience; some have been coming here for as long as they can remember. It’s a great big family really. Don’t be deceived by the looks of the tiny shop, which has only 4 tables and 12 chairs with a room at the back that has seating for 24 people. It’s always full with some waiting to be seated. You’d have to grab an empty chair as soon as someone stands up to leave. The room has a quaint charm, with the feeling that you have stepped back in time. ‘Naomba Chai mojana Kebab mbili – fastafasta!’ is a standard request. In this small room, there are different people from all walks of life. The rich, the famous, the middle class, the Sunday churchgoers, the old toothless Ismaili uncle, the gang of old Indian Hindu men, the politician’s wife dressed in her flamboyant kitenge. This is multicultural Tanzania in one cramped room. Today is an exciting

day. An interview has been arranged with the man behind the KT shop that has become an institution in Dar Es Salam: Mr. Abdulhamid Abdul Karim Golandaz (AH). I find him at the back of the shop. He gets up to greet me from cutting and slicing, helping his fellow workers with preparing the samosas and tells me, “The secret of success is in helping out and working alongside the staff.” What does KT stand for? A.H: It’s named after my late father – Karimbhai Teashop When did you start the KT shop? A.H: In 1968, we bought this shop for 800 shillings. In those days we stayed open from 4am to 11pm at night. We started preparing to cook fresh Maandazi and Barazi very early for it to be served at 4am. Has KT shop changed much since its establishment in 1968? A.H: Because we treat our customers as friends, it’s more like a club now, with all our customers our club members. Why is KT such a success after all these years, withstanding all the modern-day restaurant competition?

A.H: We are a successful business because we work hard to please our customers. We use the best ingredients to provide the best quality and high standards in taste. The secret is to have a clean heart and a broad mind. What is the secret behind KT’s special tea? A.H: The boiling point is the secret. Boil water in a huge pot and add sugar till it dissolves. Add the best quality tea leaves and let it boil till the tea leaves come to the edge of the pot. Add full cream milk and let it boil for another few minutes. Filter and serve. Which famous people have visited KT shop? A.H: The list is very long, but the likes of President Kikwete, ex President Mwinyi and Anna Mkapa. What is your favorite food from the menu? A.H: Chanabajia. How big is your work force? A.H: If you want to order 3000 kebabs, then we can have them delivered within 2 hours. That’s how big our work force is.

Sweet Revolution Dots cupcakery: a unique bakery!

Cupcakes are as nice to taste as to look at. Maybe that’s the reason why these small delicacies are becoming so popular worldwide. Since 2012, Kelsey Malaika and her partner Elliot Pinto have successfully operated the first cupcakery in Tanzania, which sells and delivers an amazing range of really tasty products. Kelsey explained to us the secrets behind these truly delicious pieces of art.

“THE KEY TO A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS IS TO BE UNIQUE AND TO CONSTANTLY BE EVOLVING”

What inspired you to create a cupcakery in Tanzania? I came to Tanzania 5 years ago, from the States, to study a master’s degree in Kiswahili at Dar Es Salaam University but the bakery part comes from my grandmother, who had a baking business where I used to work when I was younger. At Dots now, I run the day to day business stuff and Eliot is the artist making our crazy customised cakes. What is it about your cakes & cupcakes that make them so popular? I think we have transformed the sweet industry in Tanzania. In some places, you get a cake and it’s basically bread with a really sugary coating. In Dots, new customers say “we don’t want a lot of cake ‘cause nobody eats the wedding cake”, but they come back saying “Oh my God, we wish we had a much bigger cake, everybody

was licking their plates”. Furthermore, a cupcake is a single serving, so you can have 10 different flavours within the size of one normal cake. After dinner, you want a nice dessert, not bread, so I think we really helped to revolutionize the way cakes are! Our cakes are delicious and also affordable. What is your advice on how to succeed in the bakery industry? The main issue here in Tanzania is the “plagiarism” business. The key to a successful business is to be unique and to constantly be evolving. You can go and see hundreds of bakers who use every single name that we use, like “Death by Chocolate” or “Red Velvet Nutella”; they’re copying things exactly, and I think that it damages both businesses instead of the opposite. When you see something successful, look at why is it successful, and then put your own spin on it.

Exciting

Amsterdam WHETHER TRAVELLING FOR BUSINESS OR PLEASURE, A TRIP TO AMSTERDAM GUARANTEES A GLIMPSE INTO A BUZZING CITY WITH ARCHITECTURAL WONDERS, ENDLESS CANALS AND A QUIRKY CULTURE. IT IS, IN MANY WAYS, AN EXCITING CITY LIKE NO OTHER IN THE WORLD.

Here are our top suggestions of must-do activities in Amsterdam: Visit the Nine Little Streets (De Negen Straatjes) This is, as the name suggests, nine small streets, which run at the heart of the canal district between the Prinsengracht and Singel canals. The area is known for its unique atmosphere. It is a delightful and trendy shopping area where you can explore designer boutiques, art galleries, jewelers, gift shops, fashion shops and specialist businesses. There are also plenty of bars, cafes and restaurants in the area for you to sit and have a break. Check out the Red Light District This is one of Amsterdam’s major tourist attractions. The Amsterdam Red Light District leaves nothing to the imagination; during the day you will see fewer crowds and fewer women in the windows, but if you come at nighttime swarms of people will be on the streets. There are a lot of agencies offering guided tours in the Red Light District but be aware that is it not allowed to take any pictures of the women on display.

The Heineken experience This is a must-do for all lovers of beer. The Heineken experience takes place in the old Heineken brewery (Heineken Brouwerij). With the Heineken experience you get a virtual-reality ride, a history of

the Heineken family and a free beer tasting, all housed in the century-old factory. Reypenaer Cheese Tasting Room Dutch cheese is famous all over the world, especially Gouda and Edam. In the Reypenaer Cheese Tasting Room you will taste six of their finest cheeses, together with white wine, red wine and port or nonalcoholic drinks if you prefer. The tasting takes about an hour. You can purchase your tickets at http://www. reypenaercheese.com/en/cheese-tasting. FOAM Photography Museum This is located in a beautiful century-and a-half-old canal house at one of Amsterdam’s central canals. The museum changes exhibitions around every 2-4 months and shows work from two to three different international artists at the same time. The museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm, except for Thursday and Friday, when the museum is open until 9pm. Café Gollem What better way to end a long day in a foreign city than with a glass of cold beer? Café Gollem is one of the first and best specialist beer bars in Amsterdam. This bar stocks more than 200 types of bottled beers and 10 beers on tap. The bar has four branches in Amsterdam so there is a high chance of you being near one when the thirst for a beer comes. The oldest one is located in the centre of Amsterdam with a charming location in a tiny alley. You can read more and find the location of the other bars at cafegollem.nl.

• CANCER AWARENESS • By MAN Magazine Team

This section is in memory of the late Dr. Emmanuel Kandusi, a champion of prostate cancer prevention and a long contributor to MAN Magazine, who sadly lost his battle with prostate cancer in May 2015. Just as he worked tirelessly to educate, inform and raise awareness about prostate cancer in Tanzania, we at MAN Magazine will continue his legacy by always dedicating a page on the latest findings and facts on prostate cancer. May his work never be forgotten and may his soul rest in peace.

Prostate Cancer awareness

PROSTATE CANCER FACTS • More cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in men • • •

than any other major cancer The five year survival rate of prostate cancer is nearly 100% when detected early Prostate cancer often has no early warning signs or symptoms There are more cases of prostate cancer diagnosed each year than breast cancer

What tests can detect prostate cancer early? The prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test is used to look for warning signs of prostate cancer. But these early detection tests can’t tell for sure if a man has cancer. If the result of one of these tests is abnormal, you will probably need a prostate biopsy to determine if you have cancer. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a substance made by cells in the prostate gland (both normal cells and cancer cells). PSA is mostly found in semen, but a small amount is also found in the blood. Most healthy men have levels under 4 nanograms per millilitre (ng/ml) of blood. The chance of having prostate cancer goes up as the PSA level goes up. When prostate cancer develops, the PSA level usually goes above 4. Still, a level below 4 does not guarantee that a man doesn’t have cancer – about 15% of men with a PSA below 4

58 • www.manmagazinetz.com

will have prostate cancer on a biopsy. Men with a PSA level between 4 and 10 have about a 1 in 4 chance of having prostate cancer. If the PSA is more than 10, the chance of having prostate cancer is over 50%. If your PSA level is high, your doctor may advise either waiting a while and repeating the test, or getting a prostate biopsy to find out if you have cancer. Not all doctors use the same PSA cutoff point when advising whether to do a biopsy. Some may advise it if the PSA is 4 or higher, while others might recommend it at 2.5 or higher. Other factors, such as your age, race, and family history, may also come into play. Contact your local general practitioner to get more information on the prostate-specific antigen blood test.

Depression in men Did you know that one in eight men suffers from depression at some point in their life? Probably not, because men often feel as though they cannot admit to emotional problems, seeing them as weak or emasculating. However, just because depression does not manifest itself as a visible wound does not mean it isn’t a debilitating illness. With global levels of the condition rising, it is a topic far too important to be avoided. Even in the 21st century, there is still a social stigma attached to mental illness, with many people feeling ashamed to admit they are depressed. This is particularly common among men, who believe they must always appear tough and in control. Consequently, millions of men suffer in silence rather than confiding in anyone or seeking medical help. Even if they do go to a doctor, they often find it uncomfortable to describe their feelings, focusing only on the physical symptoms of depression, such as headaches, insomnia and indigestion. One consequence of this is this pent-up pain is that men tend to avoid personal contact with friends and family, or seek solace in alcohol or reckless activities like drunk driving and gambling. They often feel consistently hopeless, angry or tired, which

This is particularly common among men, who believe they must always appear tough and in control

can lead to more aggressive behaviour. While women are almost twice as prone to depression, men are four times more likely to commit suicide - and only 50% of those who do will have received professional help. As well as prematurely ending thousands of lives, depression is the world’s second most common cause of disability, affecting its victims’ ability to take pleasure in their work, families or hobbies.

So how can we help combat this destructive condition? Unquestionably, we as a society need to talk more about this issue, to help reduce its stigma and encourage people to admit that they have depression, and to seek help. We can also take part in educational campaigns to raise awareness of the illness and its symptoms. Depression can feel like an asphyxiating blanket smothering every aspect of your life, pinning you down so tightly it seems you can never get up again. If you or someone you care about is suffering from this condition, remember that there is nothing shameful or unmanly about it. Depression is an illness experienced by over 350 million people across the world - and, with effort and support, it can be vanquished.

De-stress Stress is one of the major causes of going grey early and also causes us to age faster. Try to find time to de-stress - one simple way of doing so is going to bed early.

Stop smoking Smoking has been scientifically proven to cause premature ageing in the body. Quitting should be your first step.

Keep hydrated Reduce caffeine and alcohol and up your water intake. Also watch how much fried, spicy and acidic foods you eat as these can dehydrate the body and reduce moisture. Lack of moisture and hydration prevents nutrients from reaching hair follicles, which can turn them grey.

Up the iodine Foods rich in iodine include carrots and spinach. Many of us don’t have enough iodine in our diets, so bumping up the amounts of these foods you eat will keep your locks radiant.

DELAY THE GREY Though hair greying is mainly due to ageing, there are other factors that play a role, such as genetics, stress, and malnutrition, as well as certain lifestyle choices, like smoking. Our hair turns grey when it starts losing its natural pigment-producing cells, known as melanocytes, which give hair its colour. When this will happen is unpredictable, though the time your parents’ hair started greying could possibly indicate when yours will. However, we have some good news. If you apply all of the following tips to your everyday life, you’ll probably manage to keep those greys away for a long time.

Protein please A moderate-to-high protein diet is vital for your body including skin and hair health. Eat lean meats like turkey and chicken and try to balance meals with protein, not just carbs.

Improve circulation Circulation and blood flow is vital in the prevention of grey hair. There’s no point eating all the vitamins and minerals if they can’t reach your scalp and hair. To improve circulation exercise regularly as this will get the blood flowing. Also massage your scalp with your fingertips daily for 5-10 minutes to improve circulation. Peace Please! C

onflict, whether with friends, colleagues, your spouse or family, is one thing guaranteed to happen in life. Indeed, for as long as different opinions on a single subject exist, disagreements are bound to happen. You can respond to a conflict as a maniac or a gentleman. Here is the gentleman’s guide to handling conflict.

Step 1: Cool off.

Step 4: Take responsibility.

Consider some of the following: breathing deeply while making a calming statement, looking at the sky, splashing cold water on the face or taking a quick walk and then coming back to talk about the problem.

In the majority of conflicts, all parties have some degree of responsibility. When we take responsibility we shift the conflict into an entirely different gear, one where resolution is possible.

Step 2: Tell what’s bothering you using ‘I messages’. A statement like, “You’ve left the kitchen a mess again! Can’t you ever clean up after yourself?” will escalate the conflict. Now take a look at how differently an ‘I message’ comes across: “I’m annoyed because I thought we agreed you’d clean up the kitchen after using it. What happened?”

Step 3: Establish ground rules for resolving the problem. Before discussing ways to resolve the problem, set some rules for the discussion. For example, agree that no one will call anyone names or ban yelling. Encourage small breaks from the discussion if tempers flare, and emphasise the importance of resolving conflict peacefully.

Step 5: Brainstorm solutions and come up with one that satisfies both people. Allow everyone involved to offer input into potential solutions. During the brainstorming process, don’t judge whether each solution is good or bad. The key is to show willingness to seek compromise.

QUOTABLE QUOTE “Imagine a wall that’s green on one side and red on the other. You stand on one side and only see green. I stand on the other side and only see red. We’ll both be right about the colour we see, even though we disagree on what colour the wall is. Being able to realize that the other person has a valid point, even if you disagree with it, that’s maturity.” -

Oliver Gaspirtz

Step 6: Affirm, forgive, or thank. Each person should identify action steps he/she will take to work toward a solution. A handshake, hug, or a kind word gives closure to the resolution of conflicts, but forgiveness is the highest form of closure.

Note: it is okay to have a trusted outsider as a neutral party and a mediator if necessary. This can help solve severe conflicts.

Balcony Planting

Living in apartment without a garden space does not mean you cannot grow plants you love. BOX CONTAINERS It can be quite frustrating being a garden lover and then you are stuck in a tiny-winy apartment. What to do? Box container projects serve more advantage than normal gardens. You have more control over your garden and you are just a step away. Some of our suggestions; Firstly; Balcony gardening with containers made of plastic or are among your best material choices, they are attractive and lightweight. Secondly; pollination is essential. If you live in a higher floor, wind pollination might be enough but if no sign of insects like butterflies, then you might need to hand pollinate.

RAIL PLANTERS RAISED PLANTERS HANGING BASKETS One of the very first steps in creating a lush beautiful hanging basket is in choosing the plants. We suggest you should go for long trailing plants and selecting healthy plants is essential, one can get a good variety from the various nurseries displayed along the Masaki and Msasani. Please note that the baskets lose water easily through evaporation, especially considering the condition like of Dar es Salaam, therefore, monitor the moisture-level and check your baskets daily.

For some gardening enthusiasts, raised planters are a good way for our urban balconies and homes. The advantage associated with raised planters is that one can plants their own vegetables without having to worry about the soil/ground conditions, it also improves drainage, uses space more efficiently, easier for people with back problems or physical disabilities and simplifies the control of weed and pests.

During my time in Europe, I saw every house with these. They not only look decent, but saves a lot of space, and it is very ideal if you have little kids. Rail planters can be purchased at Slipway or can be hand-made. It makes your balcony space very inviting and cosy. Blooming flowers or green plants are the best for this.

Golf for kids

While golf is often seen as an adult sport, there are many well known professional golfers who took up the game from as early as the age of 2. Indeed, Golf is a sport that has many aspects that can develop a child’s character.

Here are five reasons why Golf can be very good for children: Humility and Respect Golf requires that you show courtesy to others and that you communicate with respect. Good sportsmanship must be exhibited at all times and this teaches children the importance of humility and respect in life.

Ability to concentrate Golf requires an amazing amount of concentration, and quiet is required at all times on the golf course. While this takes practice for young kids, it is a life skill that teaches constraint and respect for others.

Problem Solving Wind, trees, multiple sand traps and deep rough can make for a challenging day of play. These are a normal part of golf and can be an amazing opportunity for clever problem solving and personal growth.

Focus Golf is a tough sport. It requires that you not only know the physics of hitting the ball (and what club to use when) but requires intense mental and emotional concentration. Silencing the inner critic after a “bad shot” is crucial to regaining clear focus, which is an advanced skill to learn but one that can take children very far in life.

Practice, Persistence, and Listening In golf, instant success is very rare. Daily practice, persistence, and being open to listening to mentors and coaches is essential. In life, it is important to know that we rarely reach our goal in one “stroke.” By practicing, making corrections along the way, being open to coaching, and being persistent, children can learn to tackle most of life’s tough challenges.

Flying machines Impressive goal keepers

Iker CASILLAS – “The one on one champ” Age: 33 Nationality: Spanish Current Club: Real Madrid

Iker Casillas is one of the world’s most decorated goal-keepers. In 2008 he was the captain of Spanish team that won their first European Championship in 44 years, and the team went on to win Spain’s first world cup (a tournament in which he also won the golden glove). “Casillas is one of the few keepers I have seen in my life who are so good in one on one situations. He covers a lot when facing the striker and uses all parts of the body when needed to stop the ball. Iker has set a style which is bold and comprehensive,” said Jose Angel Iribar.

Manuel NEUER – “The Sweeper” Age: 29 Nationality: German Current Club: Bayern Munich

Manuel Neuer is, unsurprisingly, one of the best sportsman and goal-keepers of recent times. Early this year, he was nominated for the prestigious Ballon d’Or Award, competing with Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. At the World Cup, Manuel Neuer became a worldwide sensation as he hovered around the halfway line to cut off his opponents’ counterattacks. On the Internet and across social media, Neuer is celebrated as being the rebirth of the sweeper. The world’s governing body named him the best goalkeeper of the tournament in Brazil. “He has brought goalkeeping to a new level,” said former keeper Oliver Kahn. Flying machine moment: Manuel Neuer’s performance against Algeria in the world cup was remarkable for the amount of times he went flying out of his area to halt the African attacks, playing almost as a sweeper.

Flying machine moment: In the world cup final of 2010, Arjen Robben looked set to score the winner for the Netherlands, but it was brilliantly denied it by the feet of Casillas in a one-on-one situation. ‘Gigi’ Buffon goes by the nickname ‘Superman’ and is widely considered by players, pundits and managers to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, and by some to be the greatest ever. Buffon was named by Pelé in the FIFA 100 list of the world’s greatest living players in 2004, and he is the only goalkeeper to have won the UEFA Club Footballer of the Year Award. Buffon has been praised for his athleticism, his “outstanding shotstopping”, his acrobatic dives, and his quick reflexes, despite being such a large, imposing keeper. Gianluigi BUFFON “The Superman” Age: 37 Nationality: Italian Current Club: Juventus FC

Flying machine moment: He was one of the great protagonists of Italy’s victory in 2006. His save on a Zidane’s header during the final is a part of football history.

REMEMBERING A LEGEND

BRENDA FASSIE

n their entire lifetime, few musicians create the level of political and social impact achieved by Brenda Fassie in her two-decade career. Born into a South African township in 1964, she would become the voice of a nation and a generation. Fassie first rose to fame as the lead singer of the band Brenda and Big Dudes, garnering international attention with the 1983 record ‘Weekend Special’, followed by a string of further hits. She revelled in her success, spending her royalties on luxurious cars and lavish parties. But this golden age of success did not last. Fassie’s marriage to a businessman failed within a year, and she sank into the cocaine addiction which would plague her for the rest of her life. She failed to show at concerts and fought with producers, damaging her career. By 1994, Fassie had lost her house, retreating into a cheap hotel room with her female lover, Poppy Sihlahla. It was Sihlahla’s death of a drug overdose that finally convinced Fassie to undergo rehabilitation and win back her career. ‘Memeza’, which fused rock with the street music genre of Kwaito, became the nation’s best-selling album in 1997. Over the next few years, she released several more platinum sellers, being dubbed ‘the Madonna of the townships’. This is how Brenda Fassie lived: extravagantly, erratically, controversially. But, like so many legends, she did not live long. Aren’t the flames that burn brightest always the first to be snuffed out? Fassie collapsed at her home in April 2004, and remained in a coma until her death on 9th May. During this time she was visited by Thabo Mbeki and Nelson Mandela, whom she had honoured in 1990 with the song ‘Black President’. Her family reported that the coma had been caused by an asthma attack, but a post-mortem revealed a different culprit: she had taken an overdose of cocaine on the night of her collapse. She was 39. So what makes Fassie’s case different from the myriad stories of musicians with rollercoaster careers and early deaths? She had a quality that went beyond musical talent: she gave a voice to the people of the townships, to the frustrated black South Africans who had grown up under apartheid and found that life remained unequal even after segregation ended. In this day and age, with the wealth gap between South Africa’s black and white communities widening, her messages are as relevant as ever. Her best-known songs, including ‘Promises’, ‘Too Late for Mama’ and ‘Vulindlela’, remain beloved of Afropop fans everywhere. Fassie’s music helped to keep alive the rhythms and sounds of her native country - after ‘Black President’, all her lyrics were in Xhosa, Zulu or Sotho. She also inspired people to be unashamed of who they were and where they came from. When she confessed to her drug addiction, she encouraged other celebrities to do the same. And in becoming South Africa’s first black pop star, she helped a generation of people to echo her when she declared that she was ‘proud to be African’.

4 weird restaurants in the world

Experience a simulated earthquake as you eat At the Disaster Cafe in Lloret de Mar, Spain, customers are seated in an underground cave-like room where they are served by waiters wearing helmets and safety gear. At some point during the meal, the lights fizzle out, the tables and chairs start shaking, and the whole restaurant is subjected to tremors at 7.8 on the Richter scale. The customised heavy dishes prevent the whole meal from making a bid for freedom, but spillages are still fairly common - don’t wear your best clothes!

Admire the unusual decor at the Modern Toilet Restaurant, Taiwan Eating and going to the bathroom are not usually things we like to associate, but Taipei’s Modern Toilet Restaurant does just that. The food comes in crockery shaped like toilet bowls, the tables are balanced on baths and sinks, and even the shape of the food follows a bathroom theme. The seats are toilets, but in the actual bathroom you do your business on a plate! The design has proved so popular that the restaurant is now expanding into a chain.

Let off steam by smashing crockery before your meal Isdaan eaterie in the Philippines is a large resort with sculptures, circus performers and a ‘floating restaurant’ consisting of huts built over a lake. But what makes it truly wacky is the Tacsiyapo Wall, where you can buy cups, plates and even TVs to hurl at the vertical surface, preferably whilst shouting ‘Tacsiyapo!’, a local expletive. The wall is decorated with slogans such as ‘ex-wife’, ‘classmates’ and ‘brotherin-law’, so you can aim directly at the source of your anger.

Treat your friends to Dinner in the Sky Originating in Belgium, this innovative dining experience has now spread to 40 countries worldwide. Using a crane, the waiters, table and guests (firmly seatbelted) are hoisted over 150 feet into the air, enjoying fantastic views as they consume a gourmet meal. High dining in every sense.

Humour: One day, a hospital surgeon received an angry letter from a middle-aged woman. ‘My husband came in for an operation last week, and I am sure you did it wrong. We were told that there would be no negative side effects, but since that day, he has completely lost interest in the bedroom!’ The surgeon wrote back: ‘I am an optometrist, madam. All I did was correct your husband’s eyesight.’
