Indeed, there is no bed of roses! Success comes from hard work, efficiency, effectiveness and sometimes catastrophe. This notion has been shown and proven over and over again by the several successful business people we have featured in MAN Magazine. In the quest to achieve your own definition of success, I hope you take this lesson to heart. In this issue, we have again reengineered our magazine in terms of content and design so that our readers get maximum benefit from MAN magazine. O

ver the last few years, we at MAN Magazine have been working hard and diligently to bring to you a magazine that is of international standards here in Tanzania; this is one part. The spearheaded growth and development of MAN magazine would not have been a success if the second part of this equation was not present. My utmost appreciation to our readers, advertisers and general supporters who continuously contribute, comment and give us feedback that makes us better every day. Asanteni Sana. Now that we enter the second quarter of the year, our vision has more clarity. This allows us to tackle our targets and aims with gusto. Articles that you will read on MAN magazine are unique. They are written by local writers who add their own perspectives and views, looking closely at the local market and not falling far from traditions and culture. Our writers are given creative freedom and this allows them to get interesting stories from around Tanzania, whether it be on health, business, startups, technology or even decorating advise for your home and office. We even attempt to tackle the mind of a MAN with articles that seem as far fetched as “Dangerous Curves” (pg. 71).

EUROCOM TANZANIA GROUP

The magazine has been growing and expanding with more articles per section, giving our readers more information for the shilling as well as more knowledge and maybe a little wisdom too. Not that we leave the fanfare and other interesting bits out, no no … we also have juicy stuff that will make you crave for more. MAN magazine has had an online presence since the last quarter of 2014 where we keep in touch and update our readers about upcoming issues. Though we would like to be totally paperless, it seems there is a fan base that want to feel the paper between their fingers and that is the reason we are keeping it that way. Shaving is part of a man’s everyday life. This is why it is recommended to opt for good-quality products that protect the skin. Electric shavers come with a series of benefits. Our pick for this month is the ‘Philips PowerTouch Pro’ shaver due to its reliability, good specifications, quality and easy maintenance.

up your

POWER Shaving Let’s look at what makes Philips Power Pro stand out: • • It has triple track blades that cover 50% more skin surface at a time; meaning, the 3 rings of shaving slots and holes (dual precision) lets you shave both long hairs and stubbles in an easy manner.

Can be used corded and cordless. 60+ shaving minutes with just one hour of charge. Charge it for an hour, and you’ll have 60+ minutes of shaving time that’s around 20 shaves. Charge it for 3 minutes and you’ll have enough power for one shave.

Simple cleaning; just pop the head open, and rinse thoroughly under the tap.

• Super lift and cut blades raise the hair to cut closer; This means that the first blade raises each hair while the second blade comfortably cuts below skin level which equals smooth results. •

It has the jet clean system; This thoroughly cleans and

lubricates the blades and heads, and also fully charges the shaver in only 1 hour. The pack includes 1 bottle of Jet Clean solution. Perfect for trimming your moustache and side-burns. The pop-up trimmer helps to complete your look by perfectly maintaining your moustache and trimming side-burns.

User review:

This shaver holds the charge well when not in use and it does not cause any skin irritation. I also like the way the shape gives a good grip for the hands allowing you to shave comfortably. I have had more expensive shavers than this one which are more stylish, but this one is the most practical one. I would definitely recommend Philips Power-Touch Pro’ – Sudhi from Mikocheni.

Simply the Best Kaymu is Africa’s #1 online marketplace, present in more than 15 countries on the continent (as well as in several countries in Eastern Europe and Asia). Buyers and sellers utilise the well structured online platform to conduct retail transactions in a simple, user-friendly, safe and reliable way. The website offers sellers a place to showcase their products and host their “virtual shop”, while buyers can browse products across all categories to compare options and prices from the convenience of their home or office, computer or mobile phone.

At its core, Kaymu: 1. Assists businesses to thrive - Kaymu does not hold its own stock, because they do not operate a physical store. Instead, the company works with independent merchants, small and large, who manage and market their shops to customers all over the country, and support the transactions to ensure delivery or local pickup occurs in a secure, and timely manner, all at a very affordable cost. 2.

Gives customers an impressive variety - You can find the best prices for items (new and used, original and replica), from electronics and phones to clothing and accessories, and many more other products.

Another payment option is through ‘Kaymu Safe Pay’ via Tigo Pesa, where the customer sends the money to Kaymu via Tigo Pesa and waits for the product to be delivered. This is the compulsory method of payment for those outside Dar-esSalaam and an option for those in Dar es Salaam.

4. Encourages entrepreneurship – Budding entrepreneurs can join the site on their own and find additional ways to generate revenue without even having to spend money upfront on owning a physical shop, which requires payment for rent, employment and utilities. 5.

3. Offers numerous payment options – Payment can be made through, Cash On Delivery (COD), where upon delivery of the product, the consumer will then pay the required amount. This method of payment is only available for customers within the Dar es Salaam region.

KAYMU HAS BECOME THE GO-TO PLACE FOR ONLINE SHOPPING IN TANZANIA

M

AN Magazine spoke to Erfaan

Mojgani, Kaymu Tanzania’s Country Manager, who

shed light on how the company is successfully making shopping more convenient in Tanzania. It has now been 15 months since Kaymu launched in Tanzania. Indeed, Tanzania was selected because the country offers a large population with rapidly increasing access to internet and stable growth, yet remains limited in its traditional retail infrastructure. “As people become busier with life and work and able to purchase more goods, we felt the convenience of reaching buyers and sellers in other areas via our marketplace, and delivery and payment solutions would be a major benefit to merchants and consumers. We found Dar es Salaam to offer the largest concentration of retailers as well as potential customers, and the base for our logistics and payments business partners. So it made sense to focus our operations first here” states Mojgani. With a solid experience in other African countries, the company was aware they would face some challenges in the first few months of establishing the business. One of the biggest challenges faced was establishing trust about online shopping to the general public.

Mojgani adds that the company felt confident that people would trust and love Kaymu when they found out about the payment and delivery options that Kaymu offers. Fast track to 2015, and Kaymu has established an impressively huge customer base and has become the goto place for online shopping in Tanzania. This overwhelmingly positive response exceeded the initial expectations of the company, further highlighting the notion that the global trend of utilizing the website as an essential and useful platform for selling merchandise as well as collecting receivables and payments for service, is fast becoming well established in Tanzania. The country has over 9 million internet users and all these people require services that can be fulfilled with the help of the internet. For example, people still stay in the queues to pay for bills or buy tickets, but with internet all those can be done at their finger tips and make people save time and companies make more money. “If people in Tanzania embrace technology and the internet, E-commerce can be a major part of Tanzania’s economy like it has been in Western countries” states Mojgani.

Despite the tremendous growth Kaymu has experienced, there remain challenges that need to be tackled. Mojgani says that many people are still coming to understand the concept of browsing for and purchasing affordable products online and having them delivered to their home or office. Customers are doubtful that they will actually get the product they see, which is why Kaymu has had to build trust with customers over time and try to ensure positive customer satisfaction. Sellers also are learning to deal more with logistics and order processing, managing their listings and stock, as well as new timelines for their cash flows. Yet, all these challenges are part of the process of revolutionizing the way Tanzanians buy and sell and Kaymu is excited to be the leading company in helping overcome these challenges and more! The future for e-commerce in Tanzania remains bright, especially in the rapid growth of affordable smartphones, laptops and data bundles. “As more and more people test our marketplace and realize how beneficial it is, we expect e-commerce and our marketplace to really accelerate in this country very soon, just as it has in other emerging markets” said Mojgani.

The pros and cons of letting young children use electronic gadgets

Finding the right

Balance It’s breakfast time for the Shirima family in Dar es Salaam. While the parents wait for their two kids to join them over chai and chapatti, Linda, the mother, checks the web pages browsed by her boys, aged 8 and 5, the previous night.

B

oth kids love their tech gadgets and can use the computer without supervision. John, aged 5, without hesitation, says his iPad Mini is his favorite toy. He spends hours on it playing games, browsing the internet and watching cartoons. He understands when it is time to charge it and can even fix minor glitches on it when they occur. His parents brag about how clever and technologically advanced he is but they ignore the fact that he is overweight, does not enjoy any form of physical activity and is rather antisocial amongst other children. Nowadays, children as young as three years old can be found playing games on popular electronic gadgets. This new trend does not only include video games such as PlayStation and Xbox, but also smartphones, PCs and tablets. Surely, for parents it is easier to make children stay in one place by giving them an electronic gadget to

play with, but studies have shown that too much usage can be detrimental to a child’s development. In retrospect, for younger children, these electronic devices may positively impact their performance in and out of school. Interaction with these devices may help encourage cognitive learning and the development of analytical skills. Additionally, the exposure can help build up innovative thinking, investigative skills, strategic thinking and foster the creative potential of kids. Interactive games can also enhance the confidence levels and assist in developing good eye, hand and mental coordination over longer periods of time. On the other hand, there are some negative impacts on the use of these electronic gadgets over long periods of time. According to sources from a survey done by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a U.S.-based non-profit, private operating foundation, children

• TECH FEATURE • Let’s face it, technology is not going away. It is impossible to completely remove the presence of these electronic devices from children. Locking children away in a tech-free room until they are adults is not the answer. This doesn’t necessarily mean going the pro-technology route and preaching how it can change our lives,

but rather taking a critical approach which considers the benefits it holds for our children and how to achieve it. When finding the right balance for technology and kids, parents should take into consideration stressing the values, norms and principles of the Tanzanian culture in addition to understanding how technology can be managed in the home.

‘Let’s face it, technology is not going away. It’s impossible to completely eliminate the presence of these electronic devices from children.’ are spending an average of 7 hours per day operating an electronic gadget. Theoretically, kids are spending more time on these gadgets than an average adult does at work per week. The survey also demonstrated that kids knew how to get around gadgets and on to the Internet effortlessly. The same survey found out that there are now fewer kids undertaking extracurricular activities such as swimming, dancing, arts, sports etc. The bottom line is, while it may actually be a fun idea to expose our children to modern electronic gadgets, we may risk fooling ourselves into believing that other extracurricular activities matter less if precautionary measures are not taken. A concern about children may be appropriate in a technical driven aspects or real-life practical

skills rather than cognitive or analytical skills. The truth is that these gadgets are keeping children out of touch with reality and outdoor activities. For example, when children take part in violent video games such as Grand Theft Auto, for long periods of time, they are likely to be more aggressive in their day to day encounters and are more prone to confront their elders and teachers, a notion that goes against our inherent Tanzanian values, norms and principles. The addiction of these electronic gadgets may also make them get used to the inactive lifestyle and develop an unhealthy lifestyle and poor time management, leading to increased chances of obesity and other related illnesses amongst children.

Latest Buzz Wearables

The rate at which new technology products are being innovated is at an all-time high. Products such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and desktops have now become household names. Thanks to recent advancements in technology, a new type of interactive device in the form of Wearables has ignited significant media and consumer attention. Smartwatches like the Apple Watch and Samsung’s Gear S have defied odds by shifting existing technology to a new location – from the usual pocket to the good ol’ wrist.

The scratch resistant, bendable LG G flex2 LG’s happy comparing the G Flex 2 to a sporty car, saying it was inspired in part by the automotive industry’s willingness to use curves in its designs. It’s the first of three features that make the G Flex 2 more resilient to damage than your average smartphone. It’s the first phone to make use of LG’s latest flexible battery and PCB, which along with the curved shape, helps the phone absorb sharp shocks more effectively than a slab-shape phone. One of the standout features of the G Flex2 is its self-healing rear panel. Tiny scratches disappear in about 10 seconds. The way it works is a thin layer of paint “bursts” through to smooth out blemishes. The subtly curved chassis makes it supremely comfortable to hold and use.

4G TIGO Expanding

Tanzania’s third largest telecom, Tigo Tanzania, has announced plans to spend USD 120 million this year expanding its network coverage and improving the service quality. This year’s investment represents a 20 percent increase that the company spent on its network improvements in 2014. Tigo will roll out 787 new sites countrywide with the aim of enhancing indoor and outdoor coverage as well as 3G quality. Following a record 30 percent growth in its subscriber base last year with the number of customers rising from seven to nine million, Tigo is also looking to introduce 4G LTE technology.

New from Windows Although reaction towards Windows 8’s performance improvements, security enhancements, and improved support for touchscreen devices was positive, the user interface was widely criticized for being too puzzling and difficult to grasp.

Less than three years since the release of Windows 8, the world’s largest software maker has announced plans to release a much cleaner and userfriendly operating system. Much like its predecessor, the new OS, titled Windows 10, will focus on harmonizing user experiences and functionality between different classes of devices. Windows 10 will be a free upgrade for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users and is scheduled to be released late 2015.

The Empowering CEO

Moustafa H. Khataw

Before I began to interview Mr. Khataw, we had a casual conversation about mutual acquaintances and spoke about our common philosophy on the importance of doing a job one is passionate about. It’s through this he opened up about his life and career. Mr. Khataw is the CEO of Uniglobe Skylink and has grown the company from 3 staff members to the current 40. Uniglobe Skylink has matured and extended to not only tours and travels, but has branched out to have Skylink Financial Services, Skylink Rent-aCar Ltd and Noesis Strategic Institute. I left the interview feeling grateful for having a job that allows me to meet accomplished businessmen like Mr. Khataw, who are generous with sharing vital business and life lessons we can all learn from.

OUR COMBINED EXPERIENCE IN THE BUSINESS OF TRAVEL, FROM MYSELF AND THE TEAM, IS OVER 100 YEARS BUILDING A SUCCESSFUL COMPANY Success doesn’t come overnight. Walk us through Skylink’s journey from its inception to where it is now? Skylink Travel & Tours Ltd was incorporated on 12th July,1991 and became an IATA Accredited Agent in January, 1994. I took over the helm of the company in November,1994 and have been running the company since then. I will complete 21 years of leadership this year. It’s been an uphill task and hard work plus taking calculated risks. During the last 20 years Skylink Travel has grown to be the only TMC to have extensive branches network in Tanzania - Dar Es Salaam - 4 locations with a 24/7 branch at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere International Airport, Arusha, Mwanza and Zanzibar. We are the only TMC to be ISO 9001:2008 Certified company in Tanzania. We took up the UNIGLOBE Travel International as their licensee in Tanzania over 10 years ago. By virtue of this partnership, we have been able to get exposed in the international travel arena, links to global accounts as well as professional training under the UNIGLOBE standards. opportunities for growth within the organisation and have an “open door” policy where all staff members have access to me, in an organised manner, to discuss matters of mutual interest.

According to your expertise, which is the best place to prepare for leadership – at school or on the job? Why? I am a firm believer that leadership skills are best acquired whilst one is on the job. Classroom teaching is more based on theory and doesn’t encompass the different leadership styles as well as culture of various interactions between staffs.

Skylink’s slogan says ‘the next generation of travel management is here’. In what ways is travel planning made easy by the services offered by your company? At Skylink Travel we provide the best of both travel experiences at the time of booking travel - personalised service from the expert consultants as well as an online booking portal which is backed up with support from “live” travel consultants. This way, we are able to meet the demands of the new generation of travel millennial. We provide a full and comprehensive travel arrangements from air travel, hotels, package tours, travel insurance, car rentals and the entire “works”. We

also provide consultancy services to corporate clients who wish to set up a Travel Policy for their organisation with a view of enhancing their travel experience and reducing their travel expenses.

Last November, Skylink were yet again declared one of the top 100 mid-sized companies in Tanzania. What distinguishes Skylink from other travel companies? The combined experience in the business of travel from myself and the team is over 100 years. This translates to a rich plethora of dedicated travel experts who share their personal experiences and have been through the evolution of travel trends. We add value to our customers in terms of “experience” and the right guidance with their travel arrangements. This way we provide seamless travel arrangements which are appreciated by all. Our professional guidance is second to none and this has been exemplified by the return number of clients as well as personal recommendations and referrals. We are unique in the way that we keep a close watch from the time a customer travels until returning wherein we follow up with feedback avenues with a view of enhancing their customer service experience for their next time round.

In your opinion, what could be done better to improve the Tanzanian travel and tour industry? I believe that Government should play an important role to enhance our infrastructure in terms of good roads, airports as well as training facilities. The private sector should work hand in hand under the PPP - Public Private Partnership initiatives.

Our air travel portal skylinkonline.com - is fully operational which provides our corporate clients a fully integrated travel solution with MIS reporting and travel policy compliance.

INSPIRATION Who has had the biggest impact in shaping who you are today? Two people provided me vital guidance

from a tender age, namely; Mr. Anverali Rajpar, a close neighbour of my uncle and Mr. Akber Hameer, my brother-in-law. Both were an inspiration to me and directed me to take up accountancy as my career since both are astute accountants. My current mentor is none other than Mr. Batukbhai Shah who has always guided me to reach my aspirations.

If you were to address young aspiring leaders, what is the one piece of advice you hope they will all remember? Learn, learn and learn. There is no end to knowledge. Always remain humble and focused on your goal. The harder you work, the luckier you become.

In an evening of elegance and high expectation Doreen Mashika turned it up for her mainland audience with an explosive “Fashion Night In” full of exemplary colours and avantgarde designs. With a wealth of talent at her disposal, the audience were treated to a unique fashion experience of glamour and excitement that has become the hallmark of the Doreen Mashika Zanzibar (DMZ) brand. This was an event not to miss with an international guest ensemble coming from various regions mingling with fashionistas, designers, local celebrities and general lovers of fashion. The ‘Fashion Night In’ diva, Doreen Mashika, opened the show with her exclusive designs from her collection that explores the deconstruction of fashion. Influenced by the 1960s “deconstructionism” movement, the latest collection from the Zanzibari butterfly was a challenge to the modern outlook and perception of beauty and fashion. It was a look into her creativity, an exploration into form and play on the raw appeal of fabrics/garments. Commenting on her chosen direction of design Doreen Mashika states that “as a designer I try to think out of the box and break the chains that are the conventional outlook on fashion. I believe for a product to truly be memorable and appreciated, it has to challenge the thought process of individuals.” Brought to life by London based production director Rob Soar and put through the paces by a super talented team of models from Dar es Salaam and Nairobi, this extension of the DMZ brand amazed the onlookers with a fresh take on fashion that goes to cement further her standing as the “go to” designer on the globe.

Speaking after the successful outing of Doreen Mashika “Fashion Night In” the Marketing Manager of Precision Air Services PLC Azda Nkulo showered the designer with praise. She pointed out that their support for the show was brought forth by the similarities between the aviation leader and DMZ, whereby both are leaders of their respective segments and the continuous need to be different from others is a shared trait, that has allowed them to successfully stay strong in young and dynamic markets. The words of the Precision Air Marketing Manager were echoed by Eliavera Timoth, the Toyota Tanzania Ltd Deputy Marketing Manager. She stated that “Doreen is a young, vibrant designer and represents the modern Tanzanian spirit of individuals who are go-getters and looking to shape the world in which they live. As a company with deep roots within the Tanzanian society, we at Toyota Tanzania support such individuals and believe it is our duty to provide them with a platform for further success.” Toyota Tanzania and Precision Air joined forces with other locally based companies including Luxury Short Safari and Q-WAY international through their Belvedere Vodka brand in providing a platform for the successful implementation of the “Fashion Night In.” In a young and dynamic industry Doreen Mashika acts as a guiding light to her fellow designers with a focus that breaks the traditional moulds and perspective whilst not forgetting her African cultural influence.

The Syllabus of Life Skills GONZAGA RUGAMBWA, DAR BOOK CLUB FOUNDER, talks about the power of books in giving you vital life skills that can positively transform your life. What prompted you to set up Dar book club? I realized that the formal education system does not provide people with adequate life skills and I figured such skills can be obtained from reading books, particularly personal development books. So I set out to establish what I call “The Syllabus of Life Skills” whereby I identified major skills and aspects that are useful for success in life; then I researched to find out which are the most prominent books written addressing each skill. Such skills include but are not limited to: financial literacy and personal finance management; time management and goal setting; leadership skills; entrepreneurship and business management; investing, stock trading and real estate; relationships and gender psychologies. From there, I created a schedule whereby every month books are selected from the list and during that month all members read the books in their own time and should be done before the month-end meeting where we discuss the books.

What advice would you give to people who have not picked up a book in years? They should immediately make the decision to start reading – they should just pick up a book and start. Find a reading partner or join/ form a book club like ours. Fiction books have suspense; therefore they don’t need much external influence to motivate a person to read them. However, personal development books need a level of discipline. By being part of a book club, a person gets motivation to read knowing that others are going through the same challenge.

THREE MUST-READ BOOKS THAT YOU RECOMMEND i. Law of Success – Napoleon Hill ii. Eat That Frog – Brian Tracy iii. Increase Your Financial IQ – Robert Kiyosaki

“I urge every adult, business person and parent to join the book club and provide input to our Syllabus of Life Skills.”

30 • www.manmagazinetz.com

Generally, they should know they are missing a lot. There is a saying that ‘If you read books you live 1,000 lives’, so they are missing the chance to live many lives.

What type of books do you enjoy reading the most and why? I enjoy reading personal development books, particularly those that address wealth management and financial literacy. When I was in university I created a template using Microsoft Excel to track all my expenses which I now have converted it into ledger booklets and soon to be a software. For that matter, finance books help me further develop my self-taught personal finance skills.

Which book would you say has made the biggest impact in your life? Definitely ‘The Law of Success’. Some of my favorite chapters are ‘Law of Mastermind’ and ‘Imagination’. There is not much innovation in Tanzania. We need to use our imagination and become masterminds in coordinating resources to put our imaginations into reality.

• TOP COMPANY •

The Tanzanian real estate market is fast evolving. There are increasingly new buildings offering vast opportunities for property ownership and investment opportunities in Tanzania. With this boom in the property industry, there has emerged a new generation of Real Estate Companies.

L

amudi, Tanzania’s leading online real estate platform, is the leader of the pack when it comes to real estate companies that are forward thinking, reliable and deliver. MAN Magazine spoke to the Managing Director of Lamudi Tanzania, Mustafa Suleimanji, to find out how the company is facilitating property ownership for Tanzanians.

• Lamudi serves as an online platform for people to find their ideal home, land and commercial property. What advantages does an online real estate platform provide over traditional brick and mortar real estate companies? Whether your are interested in investing in property, renting apartments or even selling land or any other property you have, you can use this online platform. The website has many trusted selling developers as well as agents who have multiple properties which you can see. There are several advantages of using an online real estate platform. A few of them include:

32 • www.manmagazinetz.com

It is a quick and easy method of advertising your property that is for sale/lease or as well as an easy way to find a property to either buy or rent. The buyer and seller have direct access to information about the property. The internet is easy in comparison to the old-fashioned method of answering dozens of phone calls or setting up numerous meetings. Lamudi allows you to include as many photos of your property as you would like as opposed to a regular newspaper which restricts you. You also have complete control over the quality of photos you choose to upload, and you can also highlight specific features of your property to potential buyers. These online real estate listing services have a nation-wide audience which will make your ad visible to the entire country.

How has the Tanzanian market responded to the services being offered by Lamudi? The Tanzanian market has responded to the services that are offered by Lamudi

very positively. They are appreciative of how easy the website is to use and the accessibility of it. Lamudi Tanzania also provides easy to use apps for both iPhone and Android smart phones which are accessible at your fingertips. The website is informative with all details of the properties listed, pictures are high quality images and the buyer or renter can access the seller or leaser’s information all from the website. Being the Managing Director of Lamudi in Tanzania, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Zambia, can you shed some light on which aspects put Tanzania ahead in the property market in comparison to the other countries? In comparison to the other countries that I manage, Tanzania stands out significantly. Some aspects that put Tanzania in the spotlight is a stable political environment, a growing middle class and a high demand for urbanisation. The literacy level is rising every day in Tanzania, which means the middle class is growing and moving from rural to urban areas in search

• TOP COMPANY •

of jobs and a better lifestyle. This therefore results in a high demand for urbanisation as they all require places to live. With better jobs and higher wages people are now looking to make real estate investments in the urban parts of the city. There are many cases of fraud and scam that exist in the Tanzanian property market. How does Lamudi assure to its potential clients that all properties advertised are legitimate? Lamudi Tanzania operates a zerotolerance policy towards real estate fraud and works constantly to ensure that contracted agents and developers are credible, reputable and honest. We maintain a personal relationship with our partners to ensure that Lamudi lists properties from a wide selection of trusted sellers, brokers and landlords. Our aim is to provide both convenience and trust for property seekers by also offering quality support and assistance via email and phone. Our most vetted agents and developers are listed as “Trusted Sellers”. Look out for the trusted seller label on the right-hand column of our property listings. Lamudi TZ advises buyers not to make advance payments or deposits without conducting full due diligence. Although we try our level best to ensure that our website contains fully legitimate sources, it is always good to be cautious and do thorough research before agreeing to a deal.

What is your vision for Lamudi in Tanzania? Lamudi Tanzania intends to provide a transparent platform for people interested in all kinds of real estate. Whether you are interested in investing in property, renting apartments, selling land or any other property, you can use this online platform that is effective and easy to use. I want to ensure that the prices on the Lamudi website are reflective of the market prices and that they are consistent. Currently the real estate market is a very informal market in Tanzania and Lamudi wants to help develop a structure for the real estate business in the country. In order to do this, we want to train and empower informal brokers and help make the real estate market more formal. What has been the company’s biggest accomplishment since its inception in Tanzania? Lamudi Tanzania has accomplished a lot since it first made its way into the Tanzanian market. To name a few, we have excellent growth and client loyalty. As a result of our constant and steady growth, we have a great selection of respected developers and formal real estate agencies because they know that they can trust the Lamudi name. Informal brokers are great fans of Lamudi, because it gives them a platform to share their properties and provide themselves with credentials. Lamudi Tanzania has over 600 informal brokers trading online. We are also present in all urban centres across Tanzania, and of course none of this would be possible without our excellent and dedicated team who work hard every day to make Lamudi what it is today.

How do you see the Tanzanian real estate industry developing over the next 5 years? The Tanzanian real estate industry has a lot of potential and can really develop in the next five years, depending on how it is manoeuvred. Developers need to make sure they continue to build strong and good quality properties so as to be able to receive high investors. The Tanzanian government also needs to start enforcing some sort of real estate law so that the rents are kept at a constant and the market is more formal. Is investing in Tanzanian real estate a good idea? If so, why? If you are an investor looking to come into Tanzania and invest in property you may want to think again. Expatriates (or non citizens) may only rent properties according to the Tanzanian law. However, as a Tanzanian it is a good time to invest in property. A lot of old buildings are being demolished and being replaced by newer buildings that can accommodate the growing economy, as well as provide more retail and office space. At the same time however, even if a resident was to own a property, all land is technically owned by the state and leased to individuals from five up to 99 years. Due to the supply of good quality property in Tanzania being low, the yields are relatively high. For example, a 200 square meter property in the mainland would go for approximately TZS 1.77 million shillings which is equivalent to $1,350.

SALARY CONFESSIONS

What are the highest paying jobs in Tanzania?

L

et me ask you a question, would you really confess how much you earn to the writer of a magazine? Perhaps yes. It’s what I thought. Having just an inch of optimism, I walked up to the general manager of a reputable insurance company, and in his own fine words he said, ‘what would you do for me if I told you so?’ With less than a shock and a bit more than a sense of awe that passed through me, I walked out with nothing. With little or nor optimism left, I tried several other places and people of different designations and professions – response more than negative. Some were nice, because silence was their answer and some were obviously sarcastic. Despite being warned by my editor, who clearly stated that one’s salary tends to be a guarded secret, my inquisitive self was determined to get the answers. There is indeed a global taboo about openly discussing salaries and I wanted to find out why most men and women are sensitive about comparing paychecks with their colleagues. My colleague reasoned that the ones not willing to openly talk about it have a controversial opinion about money. Maybe and maybe not. I then came across articles on the internet

34 • www.manmagazinetz.com

showcasing real life stories of why people of different backgrounds don’t really reveal their income. For example, Emily writes on yahoo.com, ‘you will rarely hear my colleagues say I heard Joe makes $xxx per year wow, he is really worth it, they should pay him more. Instead, you hear, you know that guy Joe who’s completely incompetent? I heard he makes $xxx per year, and he doesn’t contribute nearly as much to the company as I do!’ In conclusion, she says, a taboo for sharing compensation info has developed in many regions because of the two human traits, jealousy and inability to keep secrets. These all are debatable presumptions. I went on to continue the research by trying to find a local source and this is when I came across Msongo Blog. The blog boldly touches on this issue of top salaries in Tanzania by stating: • Member of Parliament, with a monthly income (includes basic salary, entertainment allowance, house allowance, car maintenance, gym membership, committee meeting and constituency allowance) of Tshs. 16,000,000, equivalent to around $14,000. • CEO of a Commercial Bank. Major banks in Tanzania don’t make a loss, and that is why you will see their CEOs being paid salaries in

the range of $23,530 - $35,295. Unconfirmed word is that CEO and top managers in Barclays, CRDB, Standard Chartered and Exim are among the highest paid in the banking industry. Others are partners in law firms and accounting firms like KPMG, directors at major telecommunications group like Airtel and CEO of five star hotels like Hyatt.

Still irresolute, I gave this a thought, and a recruitment company hit me. A recruitment company, yes, the perfect link between a company that pays and an average Joe looking for the best job. Therefore, my colleague directed me to Sabiha Somji, the proprietor of Shughulika Recruitment in Dar es Salaam. “If I were to start listing top paying jobs in Tanzania in an ascending order, it really would not work. Different companies of the same profession have varied pay-rolls. There is no set standard. Benchmarking is a concept not so popular in Tanzania but few companies individually practise it, for instance, Pepsi,” informs Sabiha. Besides the government jobs, there are other industries which equally appreciate your ‘literal’ hard work. Without revealing any numbers, Sabiha tells me that the position of Financial Controller and General Manager is one of the highest paid, be it of any company. The recruitment agency also gave some insightful information of three professions and industries which are not only in great demand, but also get paid around $150-$200 per hour. Geologists, oil and gas industry, and the health and safety industry are all well-paid jobs now in Tanzania. The other top paying professions are; HR Managers, Senior level marketing executives, NGOs that mostly deal with food and agriculture and Operations Manager. Engineering and Finance career is very sustainable for any Tanzanian wanting to opt for that – never out of demand and ‘great opportunities to access major industries.

My search is still on. Are you willing to confess?

THE SOUND OF

success An exclusive interview with Joseph Kusaga, Founder and CEO of Clouds Media Group

www.manmagazinetz.com • 37

• COVER STORY •

Determined, calm, focused and a visionary. These are just some of the words that can be used to describe Joseph Kusaga. He is the man who turned an idea into an empire. Here he shares some of the lessons learnt and decisions taken to build the Clouds Media Group into the leading company it is today.

38 • www.manmagazinetz.com

• COVER STORY •

My leadership style is based around the philosophy of “seeing is believing” Clouds Media had a humble beginning. Did you ever visualise it growing to where it is now? We founded Clouds Media Group and we always had the aspiration that Clouds FM would be the leading radio station in Tanzania. We were fortunate enough to visualise that goal year in and year out, but what I did not anticipate was all the great things that would come out of Clouds FM including Clouds TV, Choice FM and Primetime Promotions.

As well as operating in Tanzania, you now have business interests in the UAE. Why did you decide to expand your business to this particular country? We operate in the UAE as well as across the GCC so that’s the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Oman as well. East Africa, in one way or another, we also have operations in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi. Again we always felt that the Clouds brand reached well beyond the borders of Tanzania in regards to the quality of content and the level of broadcast excellence within our organisation. The UAE in particular was a unique scenario as there was no broadcast platform there that specifically targeted the African Diaspora or even the urban community that resided there. This left a door open for us to capitalise on. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are very much considered the ‘centre of now’ and it is great to have an operation that is centred there. The UAE allows us to not only have a physical presence in that country but to also easily and strategically continue our businesses across Africa and into the Caribbean.

How would you describe your leadership style?

this is common practice nowadays, especially on the continent of Africa. We find that good leaders here really have to show and prove what is possible. So what I like to do is really show people first hand; this is what the vision is, this is what the goal is. I am very hands on. You will find me around the office, I still go to conferences all over the world and try to learn about new technology and innovation in the industry. But like I said, most importantly I like to show people and we invest a lot of time, energy and resources in moving our people around on different operations. So many of our senior and junior managers as well as our employees in Clouds in Tanzania have visited our operations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi where they can see for themselves what the overall vision of Clouds is. I am also firm when it comes to decision making. I contemplate a lot but once decided, I will die with my decision.

Who in the media industry, whether locally or internationally, inspired you and why? During my trips to the US, I happened to listen to Hot 97 in New York. The style and presentation was off the hook, while most of the stations in Tanzania just sounded the same. The Hot 97 style was more vibrant, especially in the youth market and that inspired me to do something different in Tanzania.

Where do you see Clouds Group in 10 years’ time? Ten years from now we want to be delivering on our long term strategic vision to be one of Africa’s leading broadcast media companies. We want to see an entrenched and strong presence across East and Central Africa. We want to bolster our presence in the UAE with additional TV as well as radio and we also want to be able to say that we have expanded our footprint significantly into the Caribbean.

My leadership style is very much based around the philosophy of “seeing is believing”. I think

Questions from MAN magazine readers What’s the one thing you did that took you from being a mere DJ to the successful businessman you are today?

our long term strategic digital plan. The world is very much in a digital place and si is Africa. Therefore, I would align every single business within Clouds around our digital goals.

is good money, especially in this day and age where there are really high interest rates. You have to really plan smartly if you want to go and seek a loan.

We founded our radio station in Tanga and it is always a constant struggle to find the right people with the right skills. What would you advise?

You have to have a strong stringent plan not only regarding generating income but also to keep up with the loan repayments. You find nowadays there is a higher level of access to capital but there is also a higher percentage of people defaulting on their payments. So, when it comes to getting a loan, it is important to make sure you have a solid business plan and also you have to do the research. You can have a great idea but if you do not diligence the viability of your ideas all the way through, you may find that in spite of getting the loan, your business plan did not quite work and you’re in debt for a lot of money. I cannot reiterate enough that you do your due diligence as getting a loan is a serious decision that should not be entered into lightly.

DEUS NTUKAMAZINA, Banker The one thing I did was take a risk. There was always only so much growth I could achieve by being a DJ. I always had a vision that I wanted to have a business in the direction that Clouds is today and having laid my focus on this vision, I worked hard to make sure I achieved it.

During the growth journey of Clouds Media Group, can you identify two key decisions that greatly influenced the position that the company is in today? JAMES LAIDOSON - Client Service Executive at Spearhead

First was accepting the challenge of new media direction and recreating our own format of running the station. The second key decision was hiring the firm Delloite to come and set up a professional management implementation system. The decision to combine our creative culture with the professional business operation model has positively allowed us to grow where we are now.

If there was one thing you could change about Clouds Media Group, what would it be? ANGAZA NKURLU - Head of Marketing and PR at Kaymu

There is a saying in the west ‘if it is not broken, do not fix it’, and Clouds continuously, year after year, is Tanzania’s top performing media house. I would say that if we could change one thing about Clouds Media Group, we would want it would be to, we would want to align every single business through out Clouds Media Group around

40 • www.manmagazinetz.com

DEBORAH DA SILVA - Owner of Rio Gym

That is a good question. When we first began in Dar es Salaam, we faced such challneges too. I will be honest with you. At Clouds many of our long term employees have been in the radio industry for 15 years. They did not start off as radio engineers. A lot of their skills came from ‘on the job’ training and we all learned together. From thereon, we invested in them. I think the one thing you can do is invest in your employees. Get them the best training, or at least the training that you can afford. Make an investment in them to go out to at least one conference around the world or even across Africa, to learn more about the trade. That of course, raises the knowledge base within your organisation. It also raises the excitement base in your organisation. So the best advice that I can give is to try and find the right people by investing in them. They have to feel like they have a vested interest in the station. And from there, I think, you will find that you have a sustainable plan for growth.

What would you advise young entrepreneurs when it comes to seeking loans? KAMANGA KAPINGA - Practising Corporate Lawyer and Investment Advisor I would say, seek wisely. Not all money

What are your views on internet radio? VISHNU PILLAI - Sound Engineer/ Musician from Bahrain

Delivering radio over the internet is definitely the technique of the future. Now I will say this, even in the west where the internet penetration is extremely high, there is still that one thing about being in your car and listening to the radio and turning it up loud. So I do not think internet radio will replace broadcast radio, the same way internet television has not replaced television, because people like to have the experience of sitting on their sofa and watching television. But of course, internet radio is key because content distribution globally is going digital and so people need to be prepared for that.

Is it possible to make a billion shillings in revenue without making enemies along the way?

What is the one thing that keeps you going when faced with challenges in business?

ERIC MUTTA, CEO of Problem Solved

RUMISHO SHIKONYI, Marketing Manager, Lucky Distribution Ltd.

It is common knowledge that in business unfortunately, there are going to be people who just do not like you. But in business there is no such thing as a permanent enemy. So you will find that if market share has been gained at someone’s expense, then this can create uneasiness. How people react to that, varies. But you will find that really good business people, who are your enemy today, end up being your partner tomorrow. You even find this a lot in the communications business. For example Zantel is a competitor to Vodacom but they also roam on Vodacom’s towers in certain parts

The biggest thing that keeps me going is that I view every challenge as an opportunity. So when something arises and causes panic within our organisation or even within the market, my team and I will sit down and discuss how we can create an opportunity out of this. An opportunity for growth, an opportunity to derive revenue and an opportunity to transform the market. When you look at challenges as opportunitie then every day you are motivated to create new opportunities out of these challenges.

Chocolate The world’s best known cartoonist, Charles M. Schultz, once said “All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.” Chocolate Mamas Company is Tanzania’s first and only indigenous producer of fine chocolate. From bean to bar, Chocolate Mamas ensures homegrown, organic chocolate of the highest quality. Sakina Manji from MAN Magazine spoke to Jaki Kwela, the Director and Co-Founder of Chocolate Mamas, to gain an insight about the inspiration behind the growing brand of gourmet Tanzanian chocolate. 44 • www.manmagazinetz.com

Jaki Kwela Director and Co-founder

What inspired you to start a chocolate company in Tanzania? The idea came up one night over dinner and drinks with my former partner. We had both resigned from our different respective trades (I am a registered Advocate of the Tanzanian High Court). But apart from that, we have both been pastry and dessert makers working with fine chocolate. We knew exactly what we wanted to make and what makes quality chocolate and that is how the idea came in the first place.

How did the name chocolate mamas come about? We had been tossing back and forth with a few names for a while. While hanging with a few family friends during a summer in Portland, one of them said “Listen, you are both mamas (with children) and you are both making chocolate, You are Chocolate Mamas!!!”. That made total sense. We love the name!

What is the biggest misconception people have about chocolates? In general, the biggest misconception is that chocolate contributes to tooth cavity. The fact is chocolate in itself has no bad impact on cavity. In fact, the protein, calcium and phosphate content of milk chocolate may actually protect tooth enamel. It is the acid produced

• LEADING WOMAN• by bacteria in the mouth that causes cavity, not chocolate. More specifically about our chocolate: people are so used to Chocolate being an imported luxury. The fact that we are local producers of such a fine product is still something we have to convince some locals who have not yet tried our chocolate. However, people who have tried our chocolate remaine our loyal customers.

What has been your biggest accomplishment to date? We are recognised in a lot of places as gourmet high end chocolate makers. We are slowly starting to reach more of our target market. Up until December last year we did not have our own store front. This year we managed to open a Chocolate Mamas shop at The Slipway, in Dar es Salaam. We have had quite a few of individuals and organisations looking to work with us. For exporting purposes, we are still working on getting a few things in order before we can get to that stage. With scaling up being an issue right now, we have to work on that for a bit before venturing into exporting.

We have had international NGOs looking to work with us in trying to get our products abroad. That is very exciting for us.

Which chocolate has been your best seller? Our current best seller is the individual bars of which we have about 16 flavours to choose from. My personal favourite changes with every new flavour we come up with, but currently, I am stuck on the chilli dark chocolate and cappucino. However, our mini bars are slowly becoming popular, especially with hotels doing events or putting them in rooms as pillow chocolates. They have also gained popularity as wedding favours. Also our cocoa powder is getting noticed by bakeries and such, so that’s a really good development.

at least 50 people and selling gourmet chocolate all over the world.

What words of advice would you give to an aspiring entrepreneur in Tanzania? Do what you are passionate about or what you enjoy doing. Because when it gets tough (and it will), passion and love for what you do will be the things that keep you going and grounded.

Where do you see yourself and the company in the next 5 years? We will be running a very successful Tanzanian chocolate company, employing

• MAN TO WATCH• • LEADING WOMAN • By Tasneem Jivi

In a previous interviews you were quoted saying, I decided to start telling ‘good’ African stories that the West didn’t usually tell. What aspects about Tanzania inspired you to script ‘Going Bongo’, which reflects the good side of Africa in the film? I think the films that we all loved like Hotel Rwanda and Blood Diamond, told very necessary and important stories of people suffering in Africa. But the main issue is the negative aspect about stereotyping Africa as a miserable place with child soldiers and machetes. I think in Going Bongo, we admit our short comings but at the end of the day we also show the difference in human relationships which are more superior than those of the West. This includes our way of thinking and the beauty of Africa when it comes to the nature and the people.

Rising

Going Bongo is a self-funded independent film. How challenging has it been to go head to head with the big guns during promotion of the film?

Star MAN Magazine’s Tasneem Jivi spoke to Ernest Rwandalla, the proudly Tanzanian producer, actor and writer of the movie “Going Bongo”. He shed light on the challenges of film making as well as being the producer of the first Tanzanian movie to be accepted by iTunes. His insightful responses reflect his clear vision of how he aims to raise the bar on African film making. He is definitely the MAN to watch.

46 • www.manmagazinetz.com

Going Bongo has had to depend on a lot of grass roots promotion unlike the said “big guns”. So where they have billboards on buses, we have facebook groups, friends and smaller promotion events. It’s like fighting against machine guns with a machete. But at the end of the day, we haven’t spent as much as they did on production either. As one famous director once told me, our whole budget is equivalent to paying just one of his actors on a small TV-movie.

What have been some of the major challenges you have faced in producing this film? Every aspect of making a film is challenging. From writing, raising money, shooting, etc. But unique to this film is explaining a vision in a country which is not used to producing the high quality films and at the same time explaining to investors why we are not shooting a moderate budgeted film in US or Europe instead.

To what extent has the Tanzanian film industry and audience supported the film? I think the Tanzanian film industry is at its infancy in terms of growth, at least financially. And in quality we do not

• MAN TO WATCH •

EVERY ASPECT OF FILM MAKING IS CHALLENGING. FROM WRITING, RAISING MONEY, SHOOTING, ETC. really look for the support from it at the moment. What we hope is to inspire the generation of filmmakers to come and financiers to come together and produce better films without relying on Hollywood.

IMDb gave your film a rating of 8.4. Describe to us the best facet(s) of the film that makes it so responsive. I think the film holds its quality among the films that were made for 10 times the budget. And we are proud of that. The main thing is to not look outside for the approval. Ratings and awards are highly political, so it would be a sad thing if an artist would determine his/her self worth based on that. We have done the best job possible given the budget, time and other factors. And we can live with that whether we get a rating of 1 or 10. Overall, people from all corners of the globe who have watched this film are very much impressed.

We are proud of your achievement that Going Bongo is the first East African film to be accepted into iTunes, though not a widely used concept in Tanzania. Alternatively, how do you plan to reach out to the majority of Tanzanians with your movie?

There are a lot of lessons and plenty of tricks that I could write a book about. But if I had to mention two simple things that Tanzanians can learn right away, it is to be reliable, be on time and give it your best as if this is the last film they will ever do.

Can you share with us some specific feedback or a response that you recollect, which reflects a change of mind-set of the Western Community in perceiving Africa after watching your film ‘Going Bongo’? There’s a lot. But where we have been fortunate is when someone said that they were really tired of a stereotypical Westerner coming to save the day. In our film, we show a doctor from America who comes to Africa for his own selfish reasons and the changes he finds in himself. If for one moment you stop and think about it, most expats come to Tanzania for their own reasons and not necessarily for the betterment of the country.

Name three films that you consider as excellently told and captured. This is really hard to do but the film that is perfect in almost everything (writing, acting, directing), I would say is “The Prestige” by Christopher Nolan. Number two I would say is “Apocalypto” by Mel

Gibson. I think it’s amazing how he made such a good film with no Hollywood stars and the language is NOT English (Mayan language). Simply incredible work. The third film I would say is “The Departed”.

Are you currently working on any other film projects? Yes. I am always working on different projects at different stages of development. Some I am writing and some are written by friends. But my current project is a film called “From Freetown” directed by the Director of “Jackie Chan present sWushu”, Antony Szeto. Shooting of this film starts this summer in Paris and London. It’s about a group of Sierra Leonean young people trying to make it in Paris. It is ten times the budget of Going Bongo and we hope that it will be ready by Cannes Film Festival next year.

Ernest Rwandalla was born in Moscow to a Tanzanian father and a Russian mother. He has a Bachelor of Science from the United States of America and a Masters in Computer Networking from Sweden. He also studied acting/writing in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A. Before becoming an upcoming producer, actor and writer, Ernest worked for Club Billicanas as a DJ and as a VJ at EATV.

Snippets form the Going Bong Film

There are plans to reach the majority of Tanzanians and even get the film dubbed in Swahili. Currently because we are selfsponsored, we are not able to do that without solid partnership. It takes a long time dealing with companies and NGOs. But if the right deal comes around, we are more than happy to explore it.

You’ve worked with an international crew and cast. What lessons and tricks can you draw from their expertise that the Bongo film industry will also value?

Important goals to think about

I recently met an old schoolmate and his wife in Dar es Salaam. They had just returned from London the previous week, where they had a great vacation with their young children. Life was good.

D

uring the conversation, he told me that he heard about my book “Taking Control of Your Money – A Financial Guide for Young Professionals” but felt like he already knew all he had to know about financial planning. “That’s great!” I replied. However, I knew that most people tend to focus on urgent financial goals at the expense of more important ones, so I pressed on. “What do you do for a living?” I inquired. “I own a business consulting firm. My clients include large and medium size companies. It pays well, I can’t complain” he explained. I learnt that he was the brain of the firm, if he’s not there, there’s no business. His business provided the family a financially stable life even though his wife worked as well.

insurance, and income for old age.” I concluded. I share this story because unfortunately, five months later he had a terrible car accident leaving him unable to communicate coherently or run his business. His wife said he still didn’t have life insurance. He did finally join a pension fund but his benefits were insignificant because of his number of monthly contributions was too low to qualify for full benefits. Their investments and her salary weren’t enough to cover his medical expenses and maintain their lifestyle. Life is unpredictable. Financial planning can help. Here is what you can do.

Establish an emergency fund Protect your budget by having a specific account for emergencies. The minimum recommended amount is equivalent to 6 months’ salary but several factors may influence this number.

Get life and disability insurance Provide for your family, we never know what could happen or when. Talk to an insurance agent and get coverage, especially if you have dependents.

Save for retirement Preserve the golden years. If employed, find out how much your potential monthly pension payments will be and start planning for any shortfalls. If selfemployed, explore available options and develop an action plan.

When I brought up insurance (disability, life) and retirement, his wife wanted to know more but he was defensive. “Insurance is useless. I only get car insurance because it’s the law. I don’t plan to retire but if I have to, my investments will take care of things,” he said confidently, pushing me to add a few facts. “On average, we’ll spend 20 to 30 years in retirement. About 80% of our current income will be needed. We never know how long we will live or whether we’ll have a healthy life throughout. This raises the need for us to work on having these three important things: an emergency fund,

real estate developer from abroad who wants to come invest, our job is to make the two meet. This is one aspect of it. The other is to look for growth strategies in terms of finance or partnerships for individuals who have functioning businesses. Often people question the need for an investment advisor (or are probably ignorant about it), how important is your service? There are a lot of people who have put their money in companies which have not performed well, with zero dividends.

How does our role come into place then? Let’s take an example that you want to invest in a bank. We advise which bank is doing good and whether a new bank or a small community bank is best. We provide the track record of the CEO and management, which is indeed very important to foresee the growth of the bank. This way the investors are better informed to make the right decision on where to put their money.

What are some of the biggest challenges faced by an investment advisor like you in Tanzania? One of the key challenges is to convince the good performing Tanzanian businesses to be listed in the Dar es Salaam stock exchange in order to grow and at the same time attract masses to grow with them. Many family owned or good performing businesses in Tanzania would gain more by being listed, but aren’t interested. It is necessary to be aware of the importance of liquefying the stock exchange’ or similar. If we are able to lock in such successful businesses, the buyers will have a wider diversity of investments to make. The other challenge is the country’s policies. Since 1995 to date there are only 200,000 people who have bought stocks in a country of 40 million people. Do you still keep the laws which prevent people from abroad to bringing in money and continue to be a protectionist? The positive part about the above challenge is that the government is now opting for a different direction which is open to changes. For instance, an electronic trading platform for investors to buy stocks online and from their phone. Kamanga Kapinga

What are the three important questions a client must ask an investment advisor? Let’s take an example. A client says, I like a particular bank and I want to buy its shares. The client needs to get answers on the following from their investment advisor; strategy, management and financials of the company. All these three aspects are very crucial questions to be answered in making the right decision. Tell us about your ideal client? Our focus is to bring financial inclusion for young working professionals in

Tanzania. The reason we entered in this line of business is because we are looking at ourselves. Where to make money and where to invest? These are questions in the minds of many young professionals. Saving the right way or investing the right way. Young professionals need to start thinking out of their comfort zone. A lot of Tanzanians are comfortable once they get a job. We are young and there’s more to it. There are chances of bettering our future, why not start now?

What are some of the investment opportunities currently available in Tanzania? Tanzania is a gold-mine. There are many investment opportunities. Just from services, agriculture, mining, oil and gas to construction. It is a growing economy in every sector. Currently, there are a lot of companies listed that are performing really well, for instance, Tanzanian Breweries Limited, Tanzanian Cigarette Company and smaller banks like Dar es Salaam Community Bank. These are entities that have a huge clientele and a steady flow of income coming in.

MANAGING YOUR WEALTH Name: Bobby Ruprai Designation: CEO & Financial Coach Company: Skylink Financial Services Ltd Email: bobby@skylinkfs.com Many have a misconception where they regard a financial advisor as a wealth manager. What are the main points that differentiate the service of financial advisory to that of wealth management? There are many financial professionals out there in various areas of specialisation dedicated to helping clients manage their money. Accountants, financial planners, investment advisors and stockbrokers may all fit the bill, depending on a client’s needs. Generally, wealth management offers a broader array of services than those from a financial advisor. Wealth managers usually review insurance, estate planning, real estate and other non-investment related pieces for the client and look at the holistic picture, goal setting. The role also extends in making recommendations for other products and services or even finding other trusted advisors such as accountants, attorneys and investment brokers. Many have such experts in-house. A financial advisor can do this too, but sometimes they do pure planning and not the investment piece. Or they specialise in specific fields such as risk management, tax consultancy, corporate finance management, estate planning, and retirement planning. Many of them might call themselves “financial advisors,” even though their functions are more narrowly defined than those of independent advisors. How does wealth management enhance the financial situation of a business? Wealth management so far has mostly been catered to personal high-net wealth. Although not common, wealth management applied to a business can yield results. Examples of some of the companies that do apply the above are banks, pension & social security funds and insurance companies, where deposits and premiums collected are invested in diverse portfolios ranging from short to long term asset/debt base holdings. Funds are allocated into various types and classes of instruments, be it equity, debt or a structure of both. The purpose must accomplish a gradual

Similar conditions can easily be rendered to any business where retained income can attain greater results from pertinent wealth management solutions. Each one of them deal in different characteristics with varied results. Financial services is definitely not a shoe that fits all and has to take a vast number of factors into account to consider one being suitable for its use. Many professionals maintain standard questionnaires or KYC (know your client) forms that necessitate companies, firms or individuals to complete before any consultation or solutions are offered. Hence this states that, there are a number of criteria applicable. Some criteria can classify what one seeks to achieve, whether in terms of percentage of gains or at times even looking at the lifestyle of an individual etc. There are products in the market that allow organisations to manage their fixed asset base. What’s your take on such products and how effective are they? Fixed asset management has nothing to do with wealth management. However, in some cases can shadow under financial advisory where critical decisions ought to be made on certain capital structures and asset acquisitions in an organization. Fixed assets on the other hand are a huge part of a business’s value and the management process involves more than you may think. These assets can take the form of buildings, machinery, computers and other electronic equipment and even office furnishings. Using the right fixed asset management tools and processes, companies can create efficiencies and improve accuracy in managing, depreciating, and tracking fixed assets, from asset acquisition to disposal.

KEEPING YOUR MONEY SAFE Can you tell us the difference between saving money and investing money? Saving money simply means putting money away for future use or unforeseen events. The money saved can be used to address short to long term goals. Investment money on the other hand requires putting money in a certain vehicles with the intention of getting a better yield. What are the different types of options available for investing money through a bank? There are different options that one can use to invest their money with a bank. The options can be categorized in the following way: Short Term Investment: These are usually flexible and the money can be called on demand. An example of a short term investment is a savings account and call accounts. In these vehicles, an investor earns interest daily based on the balance left at the end of the day. The good thing about the short term investment is that you can remove all your money when you need it. Medium Term Investments: These have some restrictions as a certain time frame is agreed between the investor and the bank as to when the investor can utilize their investments. Example can include Fixed Deposit and 7-32 Days Notice account. In these vehicles the customer does not have the flexibility to recall their investments on demand as the investment is paid at the expiration of the agreed timeframe for a better yield. When an investor breaks the contract and recalls the funds before the agreed time then they usually face a small penalty. Long term Investments: These, like the name suggests, are investments that address long term goals. An investor puts money away for a certain period

of time, say 6 months to 30 years. The investor earns interest daily but gets paid at the end of the terms. Example includes Treasury Bonds and long term Fixed Deposits. What is one of the biggest mistakes made when people are considering investing money through a bank? The biggest mistake made by many people when investing money at the bank is to rush and not understanding the type of vehicle they are putting their money into. To invest properly, one needs to consider the following questions: reason of investing, time frame of investiment as well as yield and risk associated with the investment. What is the fastest way to generate profits when investing through the bank? Fastest way to generate profit when investing through a bank is to diversify funds into both short and long term investments with a marginally bigger portion dedicated to long term investment. What is the biggest advantage one attains when they invest their money at a bank? The biggest advantage one attains when investing through a bank is the security of the money. The money invested through a bank is regulated and is being insured in case of any unforeseen events. If you could give financial wisdom to someone who has never considered investing, what would you tell them? I would suggest for them to create a plan of how much money they would like to have, in say 5 years, and sit down with the banker and explore all the available options. After understanding all the options, they can select the one that will give them the maximum return on their investment for a set period of time.

Need a Bank Loan?

Understand how Banks approve loan applications Lending, is essentially the temporary giving of money or property to another person with the expectation that it will be repaid. In order to decide whether to lend or not, banks need to have information from which lending decisions will be based. Decisions are made on a case- by- case basis. There are certain factors that guide the lender in reaching the decision. These factors are referred to as the 5Cs of credit and they are: character, capacity, capital, conditions and collateral. However, these factors are embedded in the so- called The Three Basic Questions in Lending. These keys questions are:

1. Who is the borrower? 2. What does the borrower need? 3. How is the borrower going to repay?

Question One: Who is the borrower? Banks always aim to identify the borrower and to find answers relating to the borrower’s background (character). For a company, background information may include year of incorporation, ownership, management, regulatory compliance and industry outlook (environmental and economic conditions). Other information may include details of the company products, services and consumers. Understanding the character and business of the borrower assist the lender in making decisions that are compliant to the lending guidelines (policies) of his institution. For example on finding out that the shareholders/ directors of the company are persons of dubious character (character), the lender may refrain from extending credit facility to the company they own, however legitimate the business is.

Question Two: What does the borrower need? Understanding the borrower’s needs will always assist the lender in deciding the right course of action. A loan may be needed for working capital (enhanced levels or support current levels), fixed assets financing, or refinancing a current debt (debt buy- back). It hence remains extremely important for the lender to understand events leading to the stated request (conditions). This will differentiate between a loan request that is a need and one that is a mere want.

Question Three: How will the funds be repayed? After the lender has gained comfort on his assessment of the borrower’s background and has clearly identified the business requirement, he then moves to ask: How is the borrower going to pay? Assessment of the ability of the borrower to pay is simply an assessment of the financial strength of the borrower. Here, the lender will do a thorough analysis of financial statements where analysis of key ratios and trend analysis is usually done. In addition, the lender will assess the credit history of the borrower through bank statements and credit references. At times he may want to have sight of the sales records maintained by the company for comparison of data. The lender may also assess banking behavior of the borrower such as deposit levels and presence of dishonored items. For businesses, the lender will also look into the shareholders’ commitment in the business (available capital). Now what remains is for the lender to decide whether or not to grant the loan. The lender may have convincing answers to all the three questions but his decision may deviate from the guidelines. During these times, a credit decision is made based on gut feeling. Gut feeling (instincts) is when the lender does not have reasons to decline the request but just feels that something is not or may not go right. It is gut feeling that normally gives rise to the supplementary question: what if the borrower fails to pay? This question examines the fall back position of the lender in the event the borrower fails to pay back. Lenders do know that the primary source of debt repayment should be cash generated by the business. Asking the ‘what if’ question simply asks the borrower to provide collateral (security) against the facility. This can be the secondary source of repayment should cash flow fail. Lending practices are largely universal and understanding the money lending decision process of banks and preparing accordingly, can you save you the potential rejection of your loan application.

Serena Safari Lodge AMONGST THE BEST

T

he Serena Safari LodgeNgorongoro has consistently been voted as one of the best hotels in the world. This unique lodge clings to the rim of the magnificent Ngorongoro Crater, the largest and most perfect volcanic crater on Earth and one of Africa’s best-known wildlife arenas. Hugging the contours of the jagged Crater rim, the lodge takes its inspiration from the so-called “Cradle of Mankind”, the prehistoric site of Olduvai Gorge, which lies close by. Linked by arched stone passages and timbered decks, its walls are decorated with stylized prehistoric cave paintings and lit by flaring torches. At the stone heart of the lodge burns a glowing fire, which is kept constantly alight. Decorated with cave paintings, the rooms are strung around the Crater rim. Each has its own rock- enclosed balcony, and all enjoy completely uninterrupted views of the volcanic amphitheatre far below. Sandra Macdonald-Mulokozi CEO/FOUNDER Black Tomato

pening a restaurant in Dar es Salaam that others talk about and willingly recommend to others is paramount for restaurant success. Of course this is easier said than done. Sandra Macdonald-Mulokozi proves it. She resigned from a position as a Business Development Director for Push Mobile to start Black Tomato in September 2010. Five years down the lane, the restaurant has witnessed a continual growth in popularity amongst Tanzanians. With two branches, one in Oyster Bay Shopping Center and one in Diamond Plaza in City Centre, Sandra’s endeavor don’t end there. Sameer Kermalli of MAN Magazine interviewed Sandra to learn about her business journey.

What feedback have you got from Tanzanians in terms of your hospitality? So far we have received very good response to our services in Dar es Salaam. Our customers seem to appreciate the freshness of our food and customer service. In any service providing industry, the success rates are measured by retention rather than new customers. If you get new people every time, and they do not return that means there is something you might be doing wrong. If your current clientele bring their friends, that means you are doing well. This itself is a form of feedback that you have to be aware of.

• HOTSPOT •

“Our most popular dishes are the Spicy Chicken Mango Salad and the Roast Chicken Avocado Sandwich. These are the fastest moving items on our menu in both branches” What is your secret of being able to have top notch service and retain your staff in the restaurant business in Dar? Most of our staffs have been with us since we opened our doors in 2010. Best way to retain staff is to treat them fairly, allow them to be independent and have some control over their jobs, give them a regular opportunity to voice their concerns / give feedback and of course, try to pay them a fair wage.

How do you manage to be consistent in what you serve? This is the most difficult aspect of what we do, especially now that we have two branches. We are lucky in that we still

have original staff from when we first opened who can train new people on how things are to be cooked / prepared / presented. We also have good managers who ensure that customers are getting the best most consistent experience possible at both branches.

What are the challenges you face to-date? Our biggest challenge is keeping the business fresh. The market is becoming more competitive with many big players coming in (e.g. franchises, etc.) We are a small, family-owned and run business and can’t compete with them on marketing spend to bring people in. But where we can differentiate ourselves is to keep offering customers new experiences whether it is new drinks, food specials or events. We can make decisions fast and change things quickly to keep ahead of our competitors. We also pride ourselves in “going local” - we use locally-produced cheese in our dishes, our baby salad greens are

grown in Iringa, our fish comes from the Ferry and our free-range eggs come from a farm in Kigamboni. We try to bring the freshest possible product to our customers. We even bake our own breads and pastries, our salad dressings and sauces are made fresh in-house and all of our food is cooked or made to order.

What is your signature dish that you would like everyone to try? Our most popular dishes are the Spicy Chicken Mango Salad and the Roast Chicken Avocado Sandwich. These are the fastest moving items on our menu in both branches. That being said, I think people should also come in to try our breakfast dishes. We serve breakfast all day and have a good selection from Muesli Bowls and Fruit Platters for the health conscious, to a Full English breakfast, Eggs and Smoked Salmon and Steak and Eggs. It is not common in Tanzania to veer off from comfort zones, when we can we sell the idea of change to them also.

• INDUSTRY EXPERT • By: Sameer Kermalli

The hospitality industry has its own set of trends, especially those that will significantly influence the industry in years to come. In Tanzania, taking into account the reality of today’s digital natives, who were born/raised into a connected, mobile world, it is clear why the industry is now sharpening its online agendas. One among in the industry is the company Hellofood, an online food delivery service that has witnessed many restaurants moving to explore their online catering services and embracing this technology, including the consumers. Sameer Kermalli spoke to Hellofood Tanzania’s Country Manager, Ms. Sherrian Abdul to get to get an expert view about operation of such service in Tanzania.

Ms. Sherrian Abdul, Tanzania’s Country Manager,

What was the driving force that led to Hellofood? Hellofood was started in Tanzania with one purpose: to connect customers to restaurants through a mobile application. The concept originated from the need to have an online marketplace for food that was easily accessible and userfriendly. Thus, the Hellofood app was developed to allow anyone the ability to surf through restaurants in their area and order food from the convenience of their home or office. In Tanzania, this idea was especially needed given the highdensity traffic in Dar Es Salaam and the

62 • www.manmagazinetz.com

fact that many people prefer ordering in rather than going out to eat.

What sort of background work is being done that the clients never get to see? The concept of Hellofood to the end user is extremely simple: you download the app, surf through restaurants, make an order and wait for it to arrive. However, there is a lot of complexity with operating such a service in a country like Tanzania. From the moment a customer clicks to confirm the order and up until the customer receives this

• INDUSTRY EXPERT •

“The concept of Hellofood to the end user is extremely simple: you download the app, surf through restaurants, make an order and wait for it to arrive”

order, we have staff working the phones making sure this order is delivered on time. We have a vibrant call center that processes orders within seconds of their being made - that includes calling the restaurant in question to place the order, confirming to the customer that their order has been processed and assigning that order to a rider to deliver it. Many times, we get 30 or 40 orders within one hour and have to process all of them at once. That essentially means we have less than 2 minutes to process each order. Sometimes, restaurants do not have the product available which means we then have to call the customer back, and see if they would like to order another food item. To decrease the number of calls being made and ensure that orders are processed faster, we have been working on installing automatic notifiers that would send a customer’s order directly to the restaurant without the need to call them. Obviously, this kind of system minimizes miscommunication as the restaurant would be able to read the customer’s order exactly as it would appear on our backend. With this system, a restaurant would see whether the customer has specific comments without us needing to call and let them know. However, the lack of network stability in the country makes this system difficult to implement in a consistent manner. We also work hard to make sure restaurants’ menus are always up to date in terms of their menus and prices. Restaurants here tend to change their menus and pricing often and to avoid confusion, we are constantly in touch with

our restaurants so that our customers are up to date with any changes made.

What is your work force like? How many bikes do you have? How many orders can you take in a minute? This question is confidential information. However, I can tell you that we are able to process around 50 orders an hour.

What are some of the challenges you face? It is extremely challenging to operate in Tanzania for a number of reasons. The first, and biggest, is the the lack of a physical address system in the country. Although our riders know all the landmarks to get directions, finding the specific house in the specific street corner can become difficult. However, we are currently working on mitigating this process by allowing customers to pin drop their exact location to a whatsapp number. Additionally, Dar Es Salaam is not “rider” friendly. Oftentimes, police officers stop our riders despite having all the necessary paperwork. The lack of a stable network connection both in terms of internet and telecommunication in Dar also makes our work challenging. Our service is based online - any kind of network connection problems makes our work difficult and challenging. But we work around this by subscribing to multiple internet and telecommunication services providers.

China - impossibly vast and fascinatingly diverse - remains a business and touristic travel destination with an unquestionable mystique. As exciting as that sounds, it also makes travelling to China for the first time an incredibly daunting prospect. Venture into the unknown, to the most populated land on the planet. Take time to talk to the people at their Embassy and see what are the least explored places. You would have to be hard as nails in terms of where you will sleep and what you will eat. End Smelly feet

Most people have over 250,000 sweat glands while others have more than the other average number and sweat excessively. Some people sweat during the hotter months of the year while others sweat year-round. Sweat alone is odorless but when it comes in contact with bacteria it begins to smell bad.

A

t first you may not notice the odor but it will be increasingly hard to hide or ignore. Before long your peers may complain of a cheesy, vinegary smell or damp rice that has been in a sack too long. Foot odor is unpleasant, unattractive and embarrassing to say the least. Fear not, we might just have the solution for you.

What Causes Foot Odor? Many factors can cause foot odor. These include stress, medication, alcohol and drugs, hormone changes, such as can be brought on by puberty or menopause and poor hygiene.

Tips to Prevent Foot Odor • • • • • •

Wash your feet daily with soap and water Keep your toenails trimmed Always wear fresh cotton socks Keep your feet dry as much as possible Don’t wear the same pair of shoes every day and try to wear open sandals as much as possible. Before washing your socks turn them inside out to allow the dead flakes of skin to wash away more easily

HOME REMEDIES

Salt Water: Using ½ cup of salt for every quart of water, soak feet for twenty minutes each day. Do not rinse your feet, dry them thoroughly and go about your day.

Black Tea: Boil two black tea bags in three cups of hot water. Add half a bucket of normal water to lower the temperature of the solution. Soak feet for 15 to 20 minutes, daily for about a week.

Vinegar: Prepare a mixture of one-half cup of vinegar and six to eight cups of hot water. Soak your feet for 10 to 15 minutes. Finally, wash your feet thoroughly with soap to remove the vinegar smell. If you observe any irregularities that pre-exist with smelly feet such as athlete’s foot, warts, corns, fungus nails or any other chronic ankle/foot ailment, do visit your local podiatrist (foot doctor) for further speciality care.

Bleach: Use bleach with caution; it has the potential to over-dry your feet and skin (add baby oil if needed). Add two tbsp of bleach to a gallon of warm water and soak your feet in the solution for 5-10 minutes a day for one week. Baking Soda: Add baking soda in warm water and soak your feet in it for 15 to 20 minutes every night for about one week. Also, sprinkle baking soda in shoes and socks before wearing them.

Hot fitness trends in 2015 Even if you manage to do one of these you’ll be on the trend for 2015, a year that trainers say will be defined by a return to basic exercises. Bodyweight Training This year, bodyweight training beat out high-intensity interval training for the crown. And for simple reasons: it’s basically a fancy way to describe all the moves you’ve been doing since you first walked in to a gym (squats, lunges, pushups, planks, pull-ups etc.) Why is it so popular you may ask? Well, because it’s the most inexpensive workout out there – all you need is your own body weight – and you can do it literally anywhere including your office, no gym required.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) Those wanting to lose a ton of weight in a short period of time, are no longer following long, steady state cardio workouts. Instead they are taking part in HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training). HIIT workouts consist of short but intense aerobic workouts, which alternate low and high intensity activities with a maximum intensity bout. Fitness experts call it the perfect way to improve strength, speed, stamina, and endurance.

Group Classes The process of getting fit can sometimes be lonely, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are many studies that suggest people who exercise alone are often the first ones to lose motivation and drive to workout. However, working out in a group can change that. Group classes are more entertaining than solo workouts since you’re sweating it out with likeminded people who want to stay fit.

Dangerous Curves

Why men love women with curves?

Whether we’re talking bodacious boobs, bountiful booty or mouth-watering thighs, gentlemen prefer curvy women over fashionable waifs. It’s scientifically proven that men love womanly curves! Men’s brains were scanned while viewing women with and without ‘curves’. Guess what? They got ‘high’ like they were on their favourite drug, or their brains became activated with more blood flow to several regions of the brain when looking at ‘curvier’ body-shapes. Wow! The human mind has evolved over several thousands of years and has learned what his good and what is bad by using all the sense faculties provided by nature. For a man who is a prospective dad, a smart babe will spawn a smart baby; we know this instinctively. A Santa Barbara University study suggests that women with thicker backsides and thighs may have a reproductive advantage. Extra fat in these areas contain omega-3 fatty acids to help moms and their baby’s brain during pregnancy. Technically means our brains have evolved so much that we can deduce this by looking and those computations are made in our brains. Anthropologists have speculated that the attraction to a woman’s ‘curves’ has to do with healthy reproductive fitness. Although women’s fashion and other magazines have been trying to push diets and the leaner look, it has been found that ‘men overwhelmingly

claimed they are most attracted to women with curves, rather than skinny women’. Furthermore 80% of men ages 18 - 50 said they want a voluptuous woman compared to a woman with space between her thighs. When asked why? Someone replied, there has to be something to hold on to. As humans, our first experience is a soft, tender to touch curvy breast which is our food source. This is ingrained into our brains and we get attracted to similar objects as they recall these memories. A study on men’s personality in reference to women’s curves found the men who date a lot and engage in masculine activities, like sports tended to prefer curvy gals. On the other side of the coin, men who liked thin gals with small breast and hips tended to be more money oriented and enjoyed fashion. Tidbit: More than 300 men rated the attractiveness of female silhouettes that had lumbar curvatures ranging from 26 to 61 degrees. The men found a moderate curvature -- about 45.5 degrees -- to be just right. Such a curvature would have conferred evolutionary advantages without presenting health problems like back pain and slipped disks, the researchers at Bilkent University in Ankara Turkey said. The researchers also found the structure of the spine itself, rather than just the buttocks’ fat and muscle, is key.

Look dashing

5 simple ways to look well groomed

1 | Become a regular at your barber shop. Basically, if you’ve noticed your hair needs a cut, then other people have too. The trick is to be proactive, not reactive. Having a regular barber you trust is the best way to ensure consistency in your hair grooming.

2 | Find your signature scent A scent that leaves you smelling good should become a subtle part of your overall presence. Find one or two classic scents you really like and invest in them.

3 | Invest in a good toothbrush Two things every woman notices: your shoes, and your smile. Electric toothbrushes reduce 11% more plaque than manual toothbrushes, and can also significantly reduce gum problems and related smelly breath from your mouth.

4 | Put your best feet forward Take care of your feet after a shower (when the skin is softest) using a pummice stone on any dead skin, before lathering a generous amount of moisturiser on.

5 | Take care of your hands Cutting your nails once a week should be basic. Treat your hands with a tiny bit of moisturiser every couple of days to smooth things over.

Cheating Prayers Signs that she is hitting off with her pastor behind your back Recently, the media in Kenya was awash with interesting news of pastor in Nairobi’s Buruburu Estate who died cuddling lover’s bosom in a steamy sexual escapade. But this one turned out fatal, for he died. It was whispered that the “poor” pastor had overdosed himself with Viagra in a bid to impress the woman with his sexual prowess. What a happy way to die? The woman said that she and the pastor were having a prayer session (do we have prayers in the bedroom?), but neighbours claimed that the two had been having an affair for some time. At around the same time in Kenya, another pastor was raided by local mechanics after having an affair with a member of his congregation, a woman married to one of their colleagues. Boy! I watched this with utter amusement as the said pastor ran as fast as his legs could carry him, in the full glare of TV cameras and media stampede, slamming driver’s door, leaving the other car doors to shut them, as he shot out of the hotel parking like a comet. The woman was left fidgety and covering her face in shame before the curious public. Here is in Tanzania, lurid cases of pastors breaking the sixth commandment are kept in a hush. In Dar es Salaam’s Kijichi suburb, a padre whose name will remain unsaid for the purpose of anonymity had before not only broken the sixth commandment liberally and with abandon, but was also accused of impregnating the faithful’s wife (wives) and daughters. Fortunately for him, matters were settled under the table (with handsome bribes). Such stories of men of cloth breaking the sixth commandment can fill a magazine. How about televangelists and the Pentecostal churches who from the face it, pose as “holy men of God, spitting hellfire and brimstone but finding themselves in the position? Well, what you see is not what it is. Many pastors in these churches have stolen the hearts of many women in their congregations. The celeb statuses especially of those TV evangelists attract women to them just like a moth that is attracted to the flames.

74 • www.manmagazinetz.com

The men of cloth know only too well that women are more disposed to religion than men. That explains why churches have a larger women membership than men, wherever you go. I do not mean that women’s crave for religion ends up in sexual sprees but occasionally, the pastors often find ready ground for adultery in desperate women seeking spiritual fulfilment than anywhere else. The pastor is the priest of the local assembly, the angel of that house or place of worship. He assigns himself the role of God. He is the authority figure to dismiss & distract the seducing woman and defend his marriage and family. While pastors are assigned the role of carving and moulding our morals, we need to understand that they too are human beings with all sexual urges. They have more chances of affairs

because they find themselves amidst women with spiritual, material and physical problems. In many cases, the said women and their pastors entertain emotional affairs, a prerequisite for real affair. The ripple effect of such affairs is profound and extremely so when you know that it is that pastor doing it. The hurt continues for years to come even if there is reconciliation and forgiveness afterwards. It’s like losing your virginity - you can never get that innocence back. The truth is that even with forgiven relationships after infidelity and even if the wound is healed, it stands still as a reminder. Here are signs that she is having an affair with your pastor.

Family neglect

Endless “bible study” and “prayer” meetings

I am not discouraging any woman from seeking a spiritual affiliation for it has its benefits. No! Extreme religiosity sucks! Some congregations have manipulative powers whereby the woman shifts all her attention to the church, and subsequently to the pastor in the name of God. She deprives the family quality time and diverts it to church activities, some of which may take place in unholy hours.

When your spouse becomes a slave to the church such that she may opt for overnight bible study and prayer, you should be worried. In such cases, the MAN’s hands are tied. Who are you to deny the woman her right to worship? Is it not enshrined in the constitution of the country?

Counseling? Marital or family problems are key areas for incubation of infidelity. While some problems can be solved locally with spouse, the counsellor, often the pastor takes advantage of her ignorance to a point where the pastor holds solutions to all her problems including intimate ones such as sex. The counsellor or counselee becomes the object of attraction instead of one’s spouse. One or both of the parties see the other as something his or her spouse should be. At this point, an emotional affair has already begun. Physical intimacy is usually not far away. In marriage, neither party thinks the spouse is perfect; at least it is rare. The danger happens when one becomes a hero to someone of the opposite gender. The good feelings that come with accolades or even adulation can become sexual attractions and traps that end in an affair

Enjoyed a trip together’ When a man and woman travel to the same destination for a work event, conference, or a convention, safeguards need to be established at the onset. A system of accountability, whether informal or formal, can break down when a man and woman are out of town together. Call me old fashioned, but I won’t ever travel in the car alone with a woman other than my wife (even at my old age).

Family finances Today’s churches are awash with the doctrine that is referred to as “prosperity theology”. Worshippers are indoctrinated to part with their money so much such that the congregants sometimes harm their family finances. Women are lured more into this trap. Although it is biblical to give, it is abnormal to give all and leave nothing for the family. If your woman parts with the whole paycheck leaving the family with nothing, you are in deep trouble. Even though she is convinced that she is giving it to God, she could be unconsciously giving it to her pastor.

DECOR OFFICE | HOME

Homely Offices 6 best practices for Home Offices Room With a View Set a desk and chair in front of a window because sometimes looking out the window is all you need to reset and reboot a tired mind.

Corner Confidential Got a corner? Use it! Even a formal living room can accommodate a work zone. Sneak in a table, chair, and a few office accessories (task lamp, storage bins) so you have a spot to retreat to do some work.

Style Revival Desperately seeking eligible nook for a few office pieces? Any inch of a living room or dining room can make

an adequate space for a desk and seat; that can be custom made at the Gerezani carpenters or if you want a more professional look then Domus Woodworks would be a place to start.

The Great Wall When you are short on space, a bare wall can be a valuable asset. Consider building up (rather than always extending wide). Simple, easy-to-install floating shelves are a practical way of breaking up a wall painted a bright hue.

Secret Project A nook is really all you need to make a spot a home office. Hanging a decorative curtain can give you a little extra privacy for those late nights when you need to step away. Orca or even Game have some really good blinds that can be incorporated on your windows, allowing light as you please. If you travel abroad, IKEA can be the place to go get ideas but remember, bringing back stuff can cost a lot more in terms of excess luggage and import taxes.

Office Space

SHOP SUGGESTION Jamana House, Plot No. 09, P.O. Box 38656 Nyerere Road, Dar es Salaam, TZ Tel: +255 (659) 659 659 Email: info@orcadecotz.com

If you’re not into sharing a desk (yes, we men can be a little territorial), then carve out personal zones by transforming a spare corner. Stick to one finish for the major pieces (desks and chairs) and then let accessories show your decorative spirit. Doing his and hers space could be a good idea if you share ideas and work on somewhat similar projects.

Instead of continually pouring money into doing your own lawn care and landscaping – only for the grass to turn brown and the flora to die – you can hire the services of a professional, which will make sure that your lawn or garden stays healthy and verdant for a long time to come.

It will increase the property value of your home. If you are selling your home, or if you plan to resell your home at a later date, having a beautiful lawn and garden is vital.

Do….. •

Have a budget to help you make rational decisions on where and how to spend your money. Important items first! Pick the logistics of the event, such as the venue, guest list, menu and who is officiating, at least two weeks before. Include your children in the ceremony; may be hosting the renewal, have them walk you down the aisle or handle the rings Figure out what you are going to wear. Going sentimental with original clothes or something simpler and comfy so the atmosphere is with ease of movement.

Expect gifts. This is not a time to upgrade your china collection. However, if gifts are brought by your guests, good for you. Overlook the budget and go overboard. Be cheap, simplicity and frugalities are no excuse.

SPINNING THE MUSIC

Who is an artist? People who communicate their thoughts, intentions and passions into their art. H the DJ is just that. Operating for the past 5 years in Tanzania. Together with Jimmy Blanks, the two were able to form a dj duo known as POZ & PLAY that caters to House Music (Afro-Soul), New Jack, Dancehall, Reggae, Old School Soul and RnB. Their sets are mixed quite uniquely but are always delivered with timeless tones to which you can identify yourself with.

“Being a DJ is quite challenging because you are playing another artist’s piece of art. Therefore you must work twice as hard for your fans to like you for your work as the Dj”, said H. There are 3 kinds of people; the kind that show up to a party looking for a vibe, the kind that bring a vibe and stay, and the kind that stay for a certain vibe and leave after two hours. POZ and Play is all about creating a vibe that is consistent and fulfilling. One of their main techniques is not just playing whatever is hot at the moment. It’s all about mixing it up and creating a story of melody per session, guaranteed to keep people on their toes and chilled out throughout the session. They don’t just get to a function and play. When they are hired for a gig they ask all the important questions to guarantee that your crowd gets its money’s worth. Their checklist included, the type of crowd expected and from there they work out the demographics, what kind of music to play, the equipment and the accurate sound. H the DJ and Jimmy Blanks have quite the integrity and passion. For them music should be well rounded and a total package. They are loyal to their brand and integrity and refuse to play the politics games involved within the Tanzanian music industry. It works for them to do the right things the right way.

good thing to have people who truly understand what you do and that keeps us going knowing we have a market out there”. It’s a lack of diversity in tastes, quality and delivery that will not hold back POZ & PLAY’s plans to keep going.

“Being a DJ is quite challenging because you are playing another artist’s piece of art. Therefore you must work twice as hard for your fans to like you for your work as the Dj”

It comes as no shock their resume has venues like News Cafe, Cape Town Fish Market, Karambezi, Joevic, Triniti, Rouge, Club House as well as high profile private functions. H the DJ reminisces on a time after he had played at the Mafikizolo concert in Dar in 2014; he was met with fans who appreciated his work. However one person in the group disagreed and said he did not enjoy the set H performed. “But my fans were quick to come to my defense and tell her she might not have been the right audience. So it’s a

Together with four other DJs, they formed the Kolectiv; a trust that acts as a spirit level on the industry, which has an assortment of all rounded DJs to make sure any and every genre that can be catered to, is delivered accordingly. “The idea is that when clients come and ask to have H or Jimmy play, we are able to give consultancy advice on which DJ from the trust best suits their needs. We are a group of DJs that respect the work we do and aim to please. So we altogether refer clients to the best man for the job. At the end of the day, there is more to the music. It’s about selling a vibe as a lifestyle and thankfully the clients understand that and trust the consultancy we do”.

There is much more to this duo than meets the eye. Along with this, Jimmy and H the DJ have years of experience in Public Relations and Marketing and as an Art Director respectively. In Europe, it is actually a plus if a DJ is multi-faceted alongside their disco jockeying ways and their tenacity and dedication to everything creative and inspirational is very impressive. It’s exciting to be able to meet people that are well rounded, experienced, want to do what they love and have it appreciated as well as make money. “It’s not just about the money. We love what we do and we look forward to doing it for as long as we can,” H the DJ said. And I couldn’t agree more!

Posh bars in Dar

Whether we realise it or not we voluntarily reveal, through social media, personal information that we would probably never reveal when asked directly. For instance, when asked to name the top bars in Dar there is always a preamble like “well it depends”. But some of these folks are the same people who frequently “check-in” through social media whenever they want people to know which drinking establishment they have visited. So here are some popular bars in Dar that you may see your friends frequently “check-in”: The new kid on the block is High Spirit. Located on the rooftop of one of the city’s new high rise office blocks, it’s arguably the swankiest place in town. Sophisticated is probably as close as you can get to describing this establishment. It offers spectacular views of the harbour and the city skyline; but the ambience is what people rave about the most (it’s enough to make you forget how overpriced the drinks are). If you like to be associated with the movers and shakers then this is the place to check-in.

An import from South Africa, News Café is located in the posh neighbourhood of Masaki. Boasting both indoor and outdoor space it has become a popular destination for the well to do locals and some of the expatriate community. This establishment is famous for its generous pour of fantastic cocktails. Two servings of rum and coke and you’ll be heading for the exit. Other bonuses include a hearty breakfast menu, live DJs and reliable internet connectivity for you to check-in.

If you are in the mood to get out of town and away from the mayhem of the city and sample a drinking establishment located in the suburbs, then Ambrosia’s is your place. Located 30 minutes from downtown this place is the quintessential bar cum the United Nations. It boasts Italian, Mexican and American cuisine as well as local dishes like nyama choma. On any given night you will find patrons hailing

A popular destination is the George and Dragon (or GnD as the locals fondly call it). It’s all that you would expect of an old English pub including the smoke filled main room, authentic English food like fish’n’chips, bangers’n’mash and of course a generous sample of local and imported ales to wash it all down. Frequented by the energy and mining folks from the expatriate community, with a sprinkling of locals, GnD recently opened up a beer garden in the back that has seen it popularity and patrons more than double in the last year.

Located on the ground floor of a new high rise, Rhapsody’s is another import that is making noise; literally. Located next to a major road it has managed to maintain a loyal list of clients with its popular happy hour specials (half price on certain drinks) and its exceptional selection of continental cuisine. The fresh car paint on the walls of parking facility is testament to the good times patrons have had in the establishment; or maybe it’s the fault of check-ins while driving.

from the four corners of the world. It’s also popular with the occasional government types. Ambrosia’s makes for a great networking place. A bonus? The bartender can get a drink in your hands in less than a minute (a high achievement for those who know Dar well).

Other worthy mentions include, Cape Town Fish Market, Triple 777, Shooters, and Flirtease.

4 Interesting aspects about life in Japan! Japanese firms encourage workers to sleep on the job In Japan, where workers get less sleep on work nights than those in other countries, more and more companies are encouraging employees to nap on the job, convinced that it leads to better work performance.

Christmas is a lover’s holiday Think of Christmas in Japan more like of Valentines day in Tanzania. On December, the 24th you are expected to ask out your date to a fancy place, think of a unique date idea or some other couple activity and yes, prepare a gift, but a romantic one

Night clubs are not for dancing It is just as odd as it sounds – you are not allowed to dance at a vast majority of night/ dance clubs around Japan. Basically, any night venue in Japan has a “Please, no dancing sign” and if you get rebellious after a few shots and still decide to dance, you can get kicked out.

Quotable Quotes: “When one door closes, another opens; but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door that we do not see the one that has opened for us.” – Alexander Graham Bell

Humour: 1. A popular motivational speaker was entertaining his audience He said “The best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who wasn’t my wife!” The audience was in silence and shock. The speaker added “And that woman was my mother” Laughter and applause. A week later, a top IT manager trained by the motivational speaker tried to crack this very effective joke at home. He was a bit foggy after a drink. He said loudly, “The greatest years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman who was not my wife”. The wife went wild with shock and rage. Standing there for 30 seconds trying to recall the second half of the joke, the manager finally blurted out “.... and I can’t remember who she was!”

Business heirs can be adopted An incredible 98% of all adoptions in Japan involve adults aged 20 to 30, the vast majority of these being men. If the owner of a family business doesn’t have a son to keep the family name alive, a suitable heir will be found and adopted into the family. The custom is also employed if a father deems his son incapable of running the business. Companies such as Suzuki, Toyota and Canon have practiced what’s called mukoyoshi.
