I’ve always been a story teller first, before I even decided on design as my career choice. It all started with writing about, and visualising imaginary lands and dreamscapes ever since I was a kid. Architecture gives me the capability of making a person feel and experience spaces in a very different way, and its this control over space that I love.

I am Mannik, I am 20 years old and I am a design student at the University of Melbourne. I come from Chandigarh, a city deeply rooted and engrained in the architectural modernist history. I was sure to get inspired!

REFLECTION: Design studio Gamma, besides being a core subject for my architecture major, has been one of the most interesting and intellectually stimulating design studios in my architecture studies at the University of Melbourne. Designing intimate spaces like houses and how it affects its user was something that I enjoyed learning about thoroughly. It was this intimacy with the briefs for this subject that led me to pour my heart and soul into designing. Looking back, I feel my work was greatly inspired by the modernist works. Mostly that of Frank Lloyd Wright, with the ideology of form following function, Le Corbusier, the truthful usage of materials, and Tadao Ando, with his unparalleled work with concrete, sensitive treatment of natural light, and strong engagement with nature. My work was also greatly influenced by the culture and housing typologies in India and Japan.

THE OVERALL CONCEPT ARISES FROM MY DESCISION OF USING THE AESTHETICS, MATERIALS, AND FORMS OF MODERNISM. SIMPLIFIED RECTANGULAR FORMS USING BARE CONCRETE WHICH CONTRASTS THE GABLE ROOF AND THE MATERIALS OF THE EDWARDIAN FRONTAGE. LIKE TADAO ANDO WITH HIS AZUMA HOUSE IN JAPAN, I WANTED MY CLIENTS TO BE ABLE TO LOOK UP TO THE SKY AND FEEL THE WIND, ALMOST IMMEDIATELY. THE COURTYARD BECOMES THE WINDOW WHICH ACCEPTS LIGHT, WIND AND RAIN SO THAT NATURE IS ABLE TO SEEP INTO THE VERY SPIRIT OF THE OBSERVER. THE COURTYARD USES WATER, A PERSONAL TOUCH TO THE BRIEF, WHICH HELPS IN DISPERSION AND REFLECTION OF LIGHT INTO THE INTERIORS. THE COURTYARD, WHICH IS MADE OF GLASS AND CONCRETE REFLECTS INCIDENT LIGHTS AND CAUSE COMPLEX SHADOWS WHICH HAS A PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECT ON THE OBSERVER PRECISELY BECAUSE THE ABSENCE OF ORNAMENT INVITES EXTRAORDINARY EMPATHY.

KEY SPATIAL EXPERIENCES The lane way access can be the main entrance for the tenant/ adult child if the couple decides to move on the ground floor, zoning off the first floor.
The study provided in the original plan can be used as a work at home space for one of the parents
DECADE 2: The couple and their two teenage children
The walk in wardrobe can be converted into a small office for the stay at home parent to work from home
The adult teenager can possibly move into the bedroom on the ground floor which will ensure privacy between not only the parents and the teenagers but also amongst themselves.
DECADE 3 : The couple and two tenant/adult child
The couple can now possibly move downstairs. This will ensure more control over the living spaces, however, the space on the ground floor can also be zoned off for the tenant by the usage of bi-fold door

THE LIVING NEIGHBOURHOOD PART 1 – COMMUNAL STRIPS AND THE VILLAGE SQUARE
Collaborative work with Hann Lynn Chan and Xinyu XIa
FOR THE FIRST PART OF THE PROJECT, OUR CONCEPT WAS SIMPLE AND REVOLVED AROUND THE CREATION OF ZONES OF FORCED INTERACTION AND MELTING POTS OF CIRCULATORY PATHS. WITH THE RAPID GROWTH IN POPULATION, THERE HAS BEEN A HIGH DEMAND OF HOUSING IN MELBOURNE AND AROUND THE WORLD. IN CONTRAST TO THE HIGH RISE APARTMENT BUILDINGS, WHICH PROVIDE LITTLE TO NO CHANCE OF INTERACTION BETWEEN THE NEIGHBOURS, THIS PROJECT TESTS SEVERAL MODES AND METHODS OF FORCED INTERACTION BETWEEN THE DIVERSE GROUP OF PEOPLE LIVING IN THE INNER SUBURB OF CARLTON. THE PROJECT EXPERIMENTS WITH A DIFFERENT HOUSING STYLE AND EXPLORES DIFFERENT STRATEGIES THAT CAN BE EMPLOYED TO DENSIFY AND ACTIVATE THE URBAN-SUBURBAN NEIGHBOURHOOD. THE OVERALL ACTIVATION STRATEGY WAS DECIDED ON BY LOOKING AT THE URBAN FABRIC OF MELBOURNE – EMPLOYING STREET ART/GRAFFITI AND THE CAFETARIAS TO ACTIVATE THE LANEWAYS, WHICH HAVE NOW BECOME THE VERY ESSENCE OF MELBOURNE.

THE LIVING NEIGHBOURHOOD PART 2 – CONTRAST FOR THE SECOND PART OF THE PROJECT, I STUCK TO THE GROUP MASTERPLAN AND DEVELOPED IT FURTHER BY OVERLAYING A LAYER OF SUB-CONCEPT – CONTRAST; CONTRAST OF SPACES, MATERIALS, SHAPES AND FEELINGS. THERE IS A BREAKAGE FROM THE RECTILINEARITY OF THE SPACES IN THE PUBLIC AREAS WHICH MAKE THE SPACE FLOW ALMOST NATURALLY AND ORGANICALLY REFLECTING THE FUNCTION OF THE SPACES. RECTILINEARITY OF THE RESIDENTIAL LOT GIVES A SENSE OF STABILITY. THERE IS A BREAKAGE FROM THE FORMALITY OF RESIDENTIAL AND THE EDGINESS OF THE PUBLIC ADDS ANOTHER LAYER OF COMMUNAL TO THE PUBLIC DOMAIN. THE USAGE OF MATERIALS IS ALSO CONTRASTING – INDUSTRIAL, COLD CONCRETE VERSUS THE WARMTH OF TIMBER. THE OVERALL FORMS OF THE BUILDING FOLLOW THE FUNCTION OF THE SPACES, STEMMING FROM THE IDEOLOGY OF FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT.
