Module 2

The Lived-In Room ARCH30005

The Artists’ Lair Transforming a lifeless 32sqm room into one with atmosphere, emotion, and character, Module two builds upon the skills developed in Module 01 by investigating the narrative and composition through an interior render scene of the home studio of an elderly couple.

Reflection Module 2 of the subject was a step up from module 1. The focus shifted drastically from modeling the objects to curating the scene. Kit-bashing, finding good assets that help in assisting and elevating the scene was more important in this module. The various elements of composition like focus, hierarchy, openness vs closeness of the scene, colour balance, density and heights came into play in module 2, which helped in crafting a scene that works well with one’s intentions. Setting the camera angle early in the scene, while helped me focus on a selected area for my final render, but it mitigated the possibility of choosing another camera position and angle later in the composition of the scene and rendering. The lighting was another crucial thing that I learnt about in this module particularly well. The interaction between light and objects, between objects and between lights can make or break the scene. The colour and saturation are two things that are really hard to master, which I’ve particularly struggled with. The lack of time, in addition to the rendering time made it difficult to master the scene in given time. Coupled with frequent crashes due to processing power and memory were added disadvantages that worsened the situation for me particularly.

A Memoir from the Olden Times The Narrative “Dear love, I’ll come back safe and sound, we will have a beautiful house, somewhere in the country, where we will grow old together. We will have hundreds of pictures of our family that will adorn the white walls. I will come back, soon... I promise. They say the war is about to get over, and they have promised us land somewhere in the southern seas. We will have our own little garden with elm trees, the ones you always adored, the weather will be better, where we can sit for hours looking at the sunset, and just grow old together. You always wanted a studio, I’ve already started sketching out plans for our house, it is going to be magnificent! We will sit there, in the studio, looking out of the windows that’ll look directly into the garden, accepting all the light, sketching and painting and sculpting Venus out of marble. We will spend hours and hours looking back at these times, they will be happier times. I cannot wait to come back, so we can start our lives together. Hope this post card reaches you well, Love you, Forever and always...”

The Artists’ Lair The Narrative

Through the turmoils of the wars left far behind, the sea journeys from the UK to Australia, the protagonists of my module are an elderly couple who have long settled in Australia. The war veteran and his wife have both retired from their duties of raising a family and now live at the house they both envisioned years ago. A house surrounded by garden on all four sides. With an art studio where the warm evening light spills into every nook of the room, where the weak morning light filters through the elm trees and drenches the room in dappled luminescence. The studio is a lair for the couple where the memories of the haunted past, of separation, of bloodshed is forgotten and only the warm happy memories shine through. The room contains fragments of life that they once had overseas and the one they built over the years. Sketches, paintings, photographs and post cards they exchanged, the ones that survived, still adore the walls that remind them of times where even through the chaos as it swirls, It was them against the world.

All the Memories and Souvenirs The Narrative

From post cards to old pictures, timber board weathering to hoarding on to the old tables and sculptures, the couple loves to keep things that mean a great deal to them. Storing them in their beloved room, when every passing gaze would fixate on the bitter sweet memories of the past, their eyes would water, showing how they’ve aged gracefully - together. ‘

The Scene Showing the workspace of the couple, the scene’s composition is an open one. With no particular object in the scene in focus, the scene is left to the hierarchy of objects developed within the scene using heights, density, colour, light and depth. While the placement of the easel on the left, with the bright colour of the canvas may suggest it is the focus, the direction of the light forces the eye to focus on the objects in the corner, stashed and tucked away in a dense nook. (refer to image: ) The movement of eyes from left to right is something I wanted to focus on. Despite having a clear dichotomy of light vs dark, height vs density, Colour vs Light direction, the composition aims to achieve a balance. There is a reference to Module 1, wherein I have imported the model with camera and lighting which becomes the subject of the characters’ current artwork. By importing the objects with camera and light, I have been able to add artificial light and place the canvas and easel in scene.

The Modeling Process The Scene The base room for my scene was modeled in rhinoceros 6. Which was later imported into 3ds max as a motion builder file. The easels were added in with respect to the camera angles for the subject of module 1 render. The reasons for which are addressed on the next page. Most of the modelling process included kit bashing assets downloaded from the internet which are referenced at the end of the document. Photos and postcards were added as materials to the plane which were later ‘pinned’ to the pinning board using pins. Essentially, groups were made and attached as nodes to the pins, which when changed simulated plane to warp, giving it another dimension of reality. To give the couple a characteristic of them being hoarders, a lot of assets have been plonked in one corner, which further adds to the composition of the piece as discussed.

The Still-Life: From Digital to Analogue The Scene The render for my module 1 formed the subject of painting for my protagonists’ paintings. The camera for the render, helped me place the easel with respect to the table with the objects in the scene. (Refer to image: ) To make the painting have the analogue look, I used photoshop and online picture converters to get the unfinished impressionist painting effect. Likewise, a second render was produced, which was a front on render, which was later converted into a finished hand sketch to be applied as a material for the second easel. The omnipresent dichotomy in my scene reflects the characters’ personalities and attitudes; their style and the over all picture of the scene. The contrast of pencil with that of oil paints is stark, which is present throughout the scene which reflect the media employed by the characters in their art forms.

The Camera Most of my scene was worked on after the setting of the camera which essentially gave me a canvas to work on. (Refer to image 1, on left) The camera positioning, focal length, and angles were highly important in conveying the feelings and setting the mood for the composition. By adding the camera on eye level, I made sure that the composition felt natural, as though viewed by the protagonists themselves. In contrast to image 3 on the left hand side, which maximises the scale of the objects and diminishes the protagonist to a mere rat, which although makes the scene dramatic, deters away from the composition quality I was going for.

The Lighting The lighting was one of the most important elements of my scene. To replicate the quality of life envisioned by the characters in the narrative, I tried to replicate a morning scene first (Image 1 on the left). However, the weak morning light didn’t dramatise the room as envisioned by me. The evening-sunset time with warm yellow light was something that both acted on my vision of the render and suited the narrative; furthermore, the warm yellow sunset light can be interpreted as highly metaphorical of their life coming to a sweet, beautiful end as the sun dips below the horizon. In post processing, I wanted to highlight the dichotomy and the contrast between the elements, therefore I made the lighting a bit strong.
