A NOTE FROM NANCY MANN, CEO OF MANN’S JEWELERS
As 2022 wraps up, so does the 75th anniversary of Mann’s Jewelers. In this issue, we feature the final installment of our two-part series, detailing how MJ has transformed over time in Rochester. We hope you enjoy the photos from our archives and the interview my brother and I did with Mary Stone. We had a blast reminiscing as we shared so many stories about the evolution of Mann’s Jewelers throughout the years.
As I shared during our interview, everything old is new again, but sometimes with a refreshed perspective. And, while a classic solitaire engagement ring is timeless, we are currently getting many requests for two-stone engagement rings, also called Toi et Moi, which is French for “you and me.” The sentiment of the two stones is compelling, plus offers twice the sparkle. Besides their megawatt shine, two stones sitting side by side are said to symbolize two souls becoming one.
This setting style may be all the rage in 2022, but it actually has a long history. In 1796 Napoleon Bonaparte proposed with a sapphire and diamond ring, and in 1953 First Lady Jackie Kennedy debuted her two-stone stunner, featuring an emerald-cut emerald and an emerald-cut diamond. The former Lady ultimately enhanced her ring with additional marquise and round diamonds to mimic the look laurel wreath.
Current day, Travis Scott recently made headlines when he presented Kylie Jenner with a significant diamond ring set with an emerald-cut diamond and a pear-shaped diamond. Not to be outdone, he a matching ring created in a miniature version for their daughter Stormi. Instagram went crazy when caption read, “Daddy got us matching rings” and featured the happy family in a close embrace.
Megan Fox received a distinctive sparkler from Machine Gun Kelly set with stars’ birthstones—a pear-shaped diamond for the rock star (April) and a pear-shaped emerald (May) for the actress. What is truly unique about this ring, created by designer Stephen Webster, is that the gems are set on two separate bands of thorns attached by small magnets hidden inside the ring shanks. Together, the two bands connect to form an obscure heart shape.
Ariana Grande accepted a special and sentimental engagement ring from Dalton Gomez. The ring boasts an oval diamond set on an angle, with a small pearl offset from the diamond. Pearl is Grande’s birthstone, and the belief is the pearl in her ring came from her late grandfather’s tie pin.
Toi et Moi jewelry is easy to personalize with different stone shapes and colors and can be decidedly meaningful. We have made rings that started with a family gemstone and an additional stone, to signify the start of something new. Two diamonds of different shapes have been the most popular and are easiest to wear. We have also made Toi et Moi necklaces; it’s all about the sentiment.
So much of what we do is based on expressing emotion. We look forward to helping you create something distinctive and unique to you.

Lots of you may be wondering how a nice, normal girl like myself became a witch. LOL, just kidding. I’m not a witch, I just talk to the moon, manifest stuff and sell magic rocks. Back in the 1800s, I would probably have been considered one, but these days I’m called an “energy worker.” Actually, I don’t really care what you call it, because it’s pretty freaking awesome.
I‘ve always been on a quest to find out how we can truly live in the moment. I breathed and exhaled a million times over, and trusted that what I needed would be put in front of me. I began experimenting with different stones and meditation, intention settings and manifesting the crap out of my life. And you know what? It flipping worked. I found that I’m happier, more present, less stressed out and living a fuller life than ever before. That’s not to say everything has been perfect. Life is still throwing sh*t bombs at me, but I am much better at dodging them, dusting myself off and getting up. Always get back up. In fact, now I pop up like a Tommee Tippee cup.
Moon & Stone is my jam. My partner, Lauren, and I have a vintage camper named Moonshine where we showcase our collection. We have our kids hanging around, we jam crystals in our bras and we go out sharing our light. I still get overdressed for just about every occasion, and now I just trust in my fashion even more. I feel more confident in my over-the-top gowns and continue to just “do me” 100% of the time. I’m loving raw stones, gems and rocks as beautiful pieces of wearable art when adorned with gold and silver, polished and cut into a million facets. More is once again, more. These badass jewels hold vibrations, meanings and energy that can bring you peace, abundance or enlightenment.
How do crystals work? Well, a human’s vibration or changes from moment to moment. When you’re your vibration may rise. When you’re depressed, lag. However, gemstones and minerals have a and constant frequency all their own. They can be steady, raise or lower your vibration, based on the that you do with them. Different stones are related different parts of your body and different “chakras’; energy portholes that relate to a certain emotion. you are in a balanced state and your vibration is energized you can move through the world in a way that limit your potential. You trust your gut, your soul to speak louder and the Negative Nelly in your shuts the heck up, finally. Who doesn’t want that?!

A SPECIAL COLLABORATION OFFERS A STYLISH UPGRADE TO AN ELITE-LEVEL MERCEDES-BENZ.
Mercedes-Benz had pushed the envelope as far as it could go—or so we thought. But now the German automaker’s engineers have given their already best-in-class Maybach sedan a next-level-of-luxury upgrade, and a few folks can own one of the new models—if they’re lucky.
The limited-quantity Mercedes-Maybach by Virgil Abloh is the final collaboration between the historic car company and the late fashion designer. Abloh, former artistic director at Louis Vuitton, helped complete the project before he died in November 2021. Mercedes planned just 150 units of the special edition, meaning these vehicles will be among the rarest in company history.
A two-tone paint job makes this car, essentially an ultra-exclusive S680, a visual masterpiece. The designers selected obsidian black for its top half, giving the hood, roof and trunk as well as the A, B and C pillars the dark shade. The lower body panels, including 20-inch wheels, are coated in a light tan hue.
The colors are replicated inside the cabin, where beige Nappa leather featuring precise diamond-stitched design covers the seats. Plush black leather lines portions of the door panels, foot wells and dashboard. If the
two-tone scheme isn’t a giveaway that you’re driving a special-edition car, Mercedes-Maybach and Virgil Abloh logos scattered throughout the interior will relay the message.
Like any Maybach—any model in Mercedes’ uber luxury line— this car has features aplenty. For starters, it boasts soft-close doors, dual touchscreens (a 12.8-inch infotainment screen and a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster), a rear entertainment system and 30 speakers. If that’s not enough, how do a 64-color ambient lighting system, heated and ventilated front massage seats and an air ionizing system with a signature fragrance sound? Under the hood, all S680s are equipped with a 621-horsepower, twin-turbo V12 that reportedly reaches 60 miles per hour from a standstill in about 4.5 seconds.
Remember, all that and more is standard. Optional equipment includes a refrigerator, branded Champagne flutes, rear-seat folding tables and temperature-controlled cup holders.
Those who bring home this Maybach will also receive a 1/18 scale replica of the car presented in a custom wooden box wrapped in, of course, Nappa leather. All of it can be yours for approximately $215,000.

MANN’S JEWELERS— THE ALCHEMISTS: NANCY MANN & ROBERT MANN, PART II. INTERVIEW BY MARY STONE
75 YEARS

something about that story,” Nancy says.
“Yeah. It’s powerful,” Robert agrees.
Because they are siblings, Mann’s president and CEO are at home with each other. During this interview, Nancy rolls her eyes at some of the words Robert chooses to make his points. He looks back at her quizzically trying to understand how what he said was daft. “Don’t describe me as simply a salesperson,” Nancy tells him. “I’m a matchmaker. And sometimes a magician! We all are at Mann’s Jewelers. It’s never just about making a sale.”
They marvel at the number of stories they’ve heard over the years from generations of families, and the stories their parents heard as well, in the unusually intimate process of giving customers’ most cherished people and memories—a permanent form.
The depth of their relationships with customers, throughout the many milestones in their lives and generations of families is something that generations of Manns have done. There is no formal transition plan for now, Nancy and Robert say. Currently, both Nancy and Robert are happy with the infrastructure they have in place, and work hard to keep their parents’ memories alive. They share stories about the many years the family worked together at Mann’s Jewelers, and how they learned from their parents that anything is possible.
The Mann family knows that only too well. Their dad’s dog tags from World War II were found after more than a half-century on a field in France by a French woman who returned them to Irving a few years before he died in 2015. Irving carried those dog tags with him everywhere he went as an external reminder of that period in his life, of what he survived and accomplished—of all that he was capable.
professional that’s on their side, it’s an easier conversation.
MS: There’s a lot to learn.
RM: Yeah, there is. There’s lots of little subtleties and nuances that people don’t always understand. And so the guy I had this morning was fantastic. He was an accountant. He was very methodical. And he was like, “Wow, you made this so much easier. This would have been so difficult for me to do on my own. I’m so glad I listened to my Dad,” and then the Dad gives me the look. He’s like, “Thank you.”
NM: To answer your question about what’s most intriguing for me would probably be two things. One is the ability to help somebody encapsulate a sentiment into something that’s more tangible and something that really does stay with you forever. I think that it’s an honor when people give us the opportunity to help them translate their words. So that’s very meaningful.
The other thing is, for me, something that I’ve never tired of is the ability to go into the world and find really extraordinary things for people that wow them, that really make a difference, something that’s rare or something that’s unique, something that’s distinctive. And I love having the opportunity to do that.
“You’remaking lovetangible for someone who’s not in theroom, or no longer withus, and that’s the most powerfulthing!”
For Mann’s Jewelers, the mission is to connect an intention—an intangible sentiment with the physical form— whether it is a timepiece, a charm, a piece of jewelry or objet d’art. Those treasures contain a feeling, a person, a period in time, for generations to come.
Below, an excerpt from an interview with Nancy and Robert:
MS: What is your favorite part of your job today?
RM: You know, for me, it’s—the thing I probably love the most is the generational aspect of it. Helping sons whose fathers have bought their engagement rings here, whose mothers have received gifts from here, you know, that whole continuum to me is what I find most enjoyable.
I love hearing that the Dad bought the engagement ring from my father, which actually just happened today. And the dad let the son choose wherever he wanted to shop. They ended up coming here as one of their points of consideration.
Sometimes they think they can find it all online, but then once they sit down and experience working with a trained
MS: Absolutely. And so how much do you both do that? Are you both going out and looking for jewels and looking for stones and designs, or does one of you sort of do that more than the other?
RM: So I’d say, Nancy is definitely the visionary in terms of the two of us. You know, she’s got the ability to look at fashion trends and kind of see things breaking before they actually break. In the industry, she’s somewhat legendary for having that eye, for having that ability to kind of look into the future, to see what’s going to be trending way before it comes to fruition. I tend to deal with the more perfunctory things, diamonds, watches...
MS: Diamonds are perfunctory? Are they?
RM: It’s much more direct. There’s clarity, there’s color. And then the subtlety is finding, you know, a great cut, the right price.
NM: Well, and a lot of it is the math and science of it, you know, the more technical aspects.
RM: Correct.
What Nancy does has more feel to it, right? There’s more of a—there’s an intangible that she has that you can’t buy, that you can’t quantify and qualify with that ability to look into the future and know what’s going to be relevant in the next year, in the next two years. Whereas a lot of the things I buy are just —they’re a little more straightforward in nature.
NM: I often have the opportunity to find some really unique, distinctive, rare things and show people who appreciate them and want to own them. So that’s what always
18 MANN’S
MANN’S 19
keeps me excited about what I do, among other things.
RM: I think Nancy, in that respect, is very good at having her antennae up and always listening. She’s always taking mental notes and thinking. She’s really good at piecing them together. I think that she and Irving are very similar in their kind of love to stay current, to be cutting edge, and to have what people are looking for or to be able to match the person with an item that becomes their signature piece, right?
NM: I mean, I would say that my father had a tremendous passion for everything as it related to the world of jewelry. He started as a watchmaker but quickly learned to love jewelry as well. I would say that I also share that passion. I never tire of it. It’s what I think about and work on, if you will, all the time. It never feels like work to me. It just feels like always a treasure hunt.
MS: Yeah, I was going to say it must feel like a treasure hunt.
NM: Well, I’ve been doing this so long that everything old is new again. And it’s just a question of how far along it is on the continuum before the current generation thinks it was their idea or it’s something really new.
What we try to do is procure the best in class for any particular category. We were one of David Yurman’s original customers. We have been selling that brand for almost 40 years, and now there are other designers who are newer on the horizon that we’ve aligned with, just because we feel that they have an interesting or distinctive point of view.
MS: Part of your success may be in not underestimating the Rochester public, it sounds like.
NM: Definitely. And I think that, once again, it goes back to having the opportunity to see something where, with a sharp intake of breath, I say or we say, “Wow,” and we know it’s going to find the right home.
RM: I mean, because when you look at it, Rochester has almost got a conservative Midwestern mindset. It’s a very kind of traditional, not showy, not fancy. You would never think jewelry like Stephen Webster would fly in Rochester.
MS: I’m less surprised now because I think that Rochester also has changed. I think it’s edgier than it used to be.
RM: Yes. I agree. I think she’s part of the reason for that because she had the belief that, “Hey, this town, it’s not just what you see that’s obvious.” There’s a whole undercurrent. There’s a desire for people to be different, to be edgier. But there was no place for them to buy anything like that.
NM: Well, I think it’s things that are interesting. Things that make people say, “I really want that.” “I’ve never seen anything like this before.” “This is cool.” “This is me.” “This speaks to me.”
RM: I think much like the cycle of fashion and design,
I think there’s an ebb and flow to it. You’re always riding a wave of, is this hot now? Is this relevant to what’s going on in the world? And it’s interesting how the things intersect, how fashion and the stone and the sentiment, they all kind of come together.
NM: What often happens across the counter for us is this tremendous amount of intimacy that people share. And, that’s for me, the river that runs through so much of what we do is just the ability to be a part of that for people. It’s interesting when people tell you their history. Very often when somebody comes in to get engaged, we ask, tell us about your relationship. Tell us how you met. Somebody wants to celebrate an anniversary. Please, tell us about the last 25 years or 10 years or whatever it is, and so that to me is the stuff that I never, ever tire of because jewelry, it’s what it represents. It’s so, so cool.
MS: What is something that you think is important to understand about this business or that we haven’t talked about that you’d like people to know about?
RM: Well, you know, when you guys are talking, the one thing I always think about is now in the days of the internet and everyone having access to every bit of information they can humanly digest, then I think there’s an information overload. And at some point, you need to trust a professional. And I look at our role in people’s lives in this community and the communities that all our customers live in around the U.S. or around the world. You know, you have to trust someone much like you have a hairdresser that you trust to cut your hair, or a doctor to advise you about your health. At some point, aligning yourself with someone that will guide you in the correct direction is important.
Here’s a great example. I had a client whose 50th wedding anniversary was coming up, and I said, “Oh, that’s great. What can I help you with?” He says, “I don’t have any idea what I’ve ever bought. It’s 50 years of birthdays, anniversaries, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. I have no idea what I’ve gotten her over the years.” And I said, “Well, have you shopped here for the majority of those years?” He said, “Yeah.” I said, “Let’s go look at the computer.”
MS: So you could show him.
RM: “I can show you everything you’ve ever bought her. We can find complementary pieces.” And I think a lot of people today are just, you know, they’ll go here for one thing, they’ll go there for something else. They’ll buy something else online. But I think there’s value in finding someone that you’re comfortable with that’s professional that you can trust and kind of letting them be your Sherpa for whatever this adventure is in jewelry, right?
NM: This is very much a relationship-based business. So many memories created with so many people. One of the many things at Mann’s Jewelers that help to keep our parents’ memory alive is all of the stories clients share with us about
“The bestpart of what we do is helpingpeople encapsulate a feeling.”
20 MANN’S
them. We know they touched so many people throughout the years, and we never tire of hearing about those unique moments. A number of our current co-workers worked with my parents as well, and still fondly share so many stories of working together. We’ve had a lot of fun, and my father had a wonderful sense of humor.
RM: Sometimes, it’s the way you’re wired or how busy you are or how life is; you need a personal shopper that can guide you. And I think there’s value in aligning yourself with a professional in whatever portion of life you feel you might need help in, and then just letting them gently guide you to happiness.
NM: What motivates people to buy jewelry…there are a lot of reasons. And we love the ability to walk people around and help them with their own editing, for them to ultimately end up with something that they’ve chosen based on an educated decision, or simply just what speaks to them.
MS: Right. How fulfilling and rewarding and meaningful what you do is.
NM: It really is. Which I can tell you is why I’ve never tired of it. I can tell you for myself I’d never be able to sell clothes because all of that comes and goes too quickly. I’d never be able to sell a lot of categories that really have no opportunity or the potential for any sort of significant sentiment or permanence.
The best part of what we do is helping people encapsulate a feeling. In many cases it’s a forever feeling. I think jewelry is the best possible category to be able to do something like that with because everything else is so transient.
RM: It actually reminds me of this story I can share. I wasn’t particularly interested in coming into the business because I didn’t quite understand it. And when I talked to my dad about it, he kind of laid it out to me pretty simply. And it was beautiful. He said, “I challenge you to find another business where people are coming to you to celebrate happy occasions all the time. You know what? It’s not happening at the dentist’s office. It’s not happening at the doctor’s. I mean, name another profession.”
There are very few places where people are coming to you for purely happy occasions, and that’s why I find this business so rewarding. It reminds me of something Nancy always says: “Open up your jewelry box. You will see the highlights of life’s moments. It’s like taking a walk down memory lane.”

People are talking about an internal bra. What exactly is this new excitement all about?
I’m not sure who is more excited about this one, me or my patients. The new internal bra is such an exciting and novel idea in the world of plastic surgery, and we have never had something like this to offer patients. It’s a game changer for getting beautiful, longlasting results from your breast surgery, and patients are calling every day specifically asking for this new option.
So what exactly is an internal bra, and how does it work?
The internal bra is a surgical scaffold called GalaFLEX. This product is a biologically-derived 2D scaffold that is used in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery to support soft tissue. For my patients, the use of this scaffold supports the breast tissue like a hammock, in the same way that a brassiere does, but inside the body. I place this underneath your tissue during your breast surgery to support the breast shape and position as it heals. The product itself is bioresorbable and is slowly replaced by your own tissue over a period of 18 to 24 months. The result is tissue that is up to four times stronger and more supportive for long-lasting results from your breast surgery.
What breast procedures do you use this surgical scaffolding in?
The internal bra is a great adjunct in breast lift procedures and also in larger breast augmentations. When I do a breast lift, I am rearranging your own breast tissue to improve where the breast sits on the chest, as well as the overall shape of the breast. Adding GalaFLEX to that breast lift allows me to create extra support for your new breast shape and position as it heals. Similarly, when my patients desire a larger breast implant, the use of the GalaFLEX allows me to have an internal bra to keep the implant in an ideal position on the chest and support the weight of the implant as the surrounding tissue heals.
How do I know if I’m a good candidate for an internal bra?
Anyone who has sagging breasts or stretched-out skin can be a great candidate for an internal bra. Patients who have yo-yoed
in weight are ideal, as their tissue has been stretched repeatedly. Previous pregnancy can similarly affect the tissue of the breast, and rapid changes in breast size with pregnancy and breastfeeding can also create a breast that needs further support. When you come for your consult, I will evaluate not just your breast shape and size, but the quality of your tissue and its role in achieving a long-lasting result. We can discuss the use of an internal bra to help you get results you will feel confident about for years to come.
OK, this sounds amazing. What do I do next?
Just give us a call at the Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery and ask for Dr. Amalfi. My team will take your information and set up your personalized consultation to discuss your goals. We have so many people calling and excited about this new technique, and we can’t wait to show you the results!

You ride a golf caddy to get around the course, rent a Citi Bike to make it across town and book a cart to navigate the airport terminals. And now there’s an optimal way to travel from place to place at a ski resort or the snowy backcountry, thanks to the world’s first-ever electric snow bike, MoonBikes.
This electric bike from the French start-up of the same name was introduced to the United States market in Las Vegas at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) 2022. It’s more specialized than your run-of-themill e-bike that isn’t equipped for winter weather, yet it’s narrower and easier to navigate than a bulky snowmobile. The MoonBike combines the benefits of both, allowing the rider to zip through up to a foot of snow with the ease of an electric bicycle and the speed of a motorcycle. It literally can take you places you’ve never been before, squeezing you into terrain through which your 4x4 won’t quite fit. And even if you leave tracks in the snow, no one will hear you coming or going—this snow bike, unlike other e-bikes, is 100 percent silent.
And it sure is a looker. This sleek design and winter white colorway are undeniably two of MoonBikes’ best assets. It has a single ski in the front and a motorized snow tread on the back end for an extra oomph of power. A headlight makes evening treks possible, handy when the winter sun sets at 4:30 p.m.
But this beauty is a workhorse too. Weighing just 191 pounds, battery included, it won’t bog you down on your travels. It’s 28 inches wide, the size of your typical mountain bike, and can be hitched onto a vehicle for easy transport. And it’ll have you cruising up to 26 miles an hour for up to an hour and a half on a single battery charge; give MoonBikes some juice by plugging it into the charging cable, or remove the battery and charge it at home.
Now only one question remains: Will you buy one for yourself to show it off and make your ski buddies jealous, or invest in a few so you can race your companions on the slopes? It’s not cheap, but it’s a doable indulgence: Pricing starts at $8,900 plus shipping and tax.
THE WORLD’S FIRST MOTORIZED SNOW BIKE IS SPEEDY, AGILE AND LIGHT. SO NATURALLY PEOPLE ARE FALLING IN LOVE WITH WINTER ALL OVER AGAIN.

For more than 60 years, Sardinia, the Italian island that lies off the country’s west coast, has been famous as a celebrity haven. It has lured the rich and famous, from Elton John and Steven Spielberg to Bradley Cooper, Lindsay Lohan and the late Princess Diana, who spent her last summer on a private yacht that circled the island.
That struck me as remarkable the first time I glimpsed Sardinia, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean (the largest being Sicily). What I found was not a lush, tropical paradise of an island. Instead, it was rocky, dry, rugged and sun-baked, perfect for raising sheep and growing olive trees. The interior was mountainous and somewhat forbidding as I drove its length. This was paradise?
However, I learned that there was one significant, overwhelm-
Sardinia’s terrain is mainly dry and rocky, but it is indeed an island paradise. It’s a land of beautiful cliffside seascapes, white sand beaches, bright hilltop buildings and five-star resorts that cater to your every need and desire.
MANN’S 39
AS JET-SETTERS HAVE LONG DISCOVERED, THERE’S MORE TO SARDINIA THAN THE SAND (BUT, OH, WHAT SAND!)
ing draw: the beaches: Not just any beaches, but what the Italians call spiagge bianche, or white beaches. Dazzling white beaches, in fact, of a fine sand that outlines much of the undulating rocky coastline. Unlike the rest of the Mediterranean, Sardinia possesses so many beaches that you can find yourself on a strand by yourself if you’re lucky, not packed like a sardine (despite the name) as you might be on the Italian mainland.
If you know anything about Sardinia, it’s likely because of the Aga Khan. One of the world’s wealthiest royals and a famed breeder and owner of racehorses, he is credited with “discovering” the island’s northeast coast in 1958.
The area he developed is called Costa Smeralda, or the Emerald Coast. Featuring possibly the most beautiful of all those talcum-powder white beaches, which offset the emerald-green sea, it not only inspired the Aga Khan. He was shrewd enough to buy an entire shore consisting of thousands of acres of undulating coastline. He went on to invite his wealthy and famous friends to come to pay and stay in what rapidly became a yacht-filled, celebrity-friendly environment. Princess Margaret led the charge, hotels were followed by lavish homes, and Costa Smeralda quickly became a byword for the emerging jet set of the 1960s. Think Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. It was la dolce vita writ large—exclusive, snobbish, challenging to reach and very, very expensive.
Today the beauty is undeniable, and this glitzy destination in the island’s northeast is a renowned jet-set playground—of course, renown has its complications. Bring on the exquisite small hotels, nightclubs and paparazzi. It’s little surprise that in recent decades, Costa Smeralda has been embraced by Russian oligarchs, who built lavish estates and anchor their mega-yachts here. Porto Cervo is the main town, headquarters for the uber-rich.
Yet Costa Smeralda is only part of Sardinia’s story. That small corner of celebrities aside, the island remains largely undiscovered by Americans, and its rugged charm and the lack of pretense on the rest of the island are worth savoring. The culture alone is a history lesson in ancient civilizations. This island in the Mediterranean lies at the
40 MANN’S
crossroads of many empires that have come and gone. The megalithic towers called “nuraghi,” beehive-shaped tombs that dot the landscape, are a vestige of the Nuragic civilization, which is considered the Mediterranean’s oldest culture. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians and Romans presided here in succession. The maritime republics of Genoa and Spain came later. Each one left its footprints and, not surprisingly, the countryside is a trove of archeological sites.
Even today, you can hear the cultural mix when a local speaks Sardinian, or Sardu, which is a Latin language closely related to Catalan. I can steer my way through Italian but I was immediately lost when I tried to puzzle out road and shop signs in Sardu. If nothing else, it added to the magical and somewhat mysterious quality of the place.
The capital city, Cagliari, is a throwback to a simpler time, unprepossessing and still a few steps behind the mainland. When I first visited in the early ’90s, I was shocked to see a much-faded painting of Mussolini, Il Duce himself, high up on the wall of a building, a remnant of 1930s Fascist rule. Change in much of Sardinia still comes very slowly.
Much more charming were the steep and narrow streets filled with restaurants offering local flavors and local wine. A food such as pane carasau, a thin flatbread, is the essence of the basic Sardinian peasant cuisine. There’s fregola, which is akin to couscous, often served with local clams or chickpeas. Roast suckling pig is a staple. The pastas are unique to the island, from malloreddus (Sardinian gnocchi) to hand-braided rings of pasta called lorighittas that date back to the 16th century. The latter was served to me in a rich, lamb-based tomato sauce in a tiny restaurant in Cagliari.
Given all of the sheep on the island, it’s little surprise that most of Italy’s pecorino Romano cheese comes from here. That ruby-red wine found every-

Opposite page: The Baglioni Resort on Sardinia’s northeast coast features lush accommodations and plenty of opportunities to relax on the sea. where on the island is made with cannonau, a grape suited for hot, dry climates. This is not just wine for the locals. The Sardinians have earned a Cannonau di Sardegna DOC for both their red and rosé wines.
Pay attention to what the locals are eating, and not just for the sake of taste. Sardinia was the word’s first official Blue Zone, a designation that in 2004 began to single out regions of the world where lifestyles led to long lifespans. Sardinia has 10 times the number of centenarians per capita than the U.S.A. Credit a diet composed largely whole grains, vegetables and fruits, with moderate red wine consumption. Walking daily also helps, and having a rugged landscape out the door turns a short stroll into a Stairmaster routine.
While the glitterati congregate on the Costa Smeralda, there are many offthe-beaten path locations that are compelling for us mere mortals. Secretive and alluring, the rugged landscape reveals its pleasures slowly.
Sardinia offers limitless hiking and, for the fittest, road biking. Yet on island with a hot climate and little shade, I’d recommend taking exercise in the morning and then exploring by rental car, targeting an out-of-the-way village for lunch and taking in sights as you go. The island is 170 miles long and about 90 miles wide at its widest point, so there’s a lot of ground to explore.
Its west coast has many places worth exploring, such as Bosa, with its hilltop castle, Castelli Malaspina. There’s also charming Alghero. While hardly undiscovered, this town is filled with historic architecture and is close to Neptune’s Grotto, where sea caves have been carved by centuries of waves crashing against the limestone cliffs. Drive to nearby Caprera Island, a nature reserve with some of the same white sand beaches the island is known for. My favorite is San Pantaleo, a small town that

holds a Thursday market with antiques and traditional woven textiles. When I first went to Sardinia, there were large, charmless resorts springing up in the southern part of the island. Forsake those and consider artful boutique hotels such as Su Gologone, an elegant mountain hotel in Barbagia. Or look at La Bitte, a charming seaside hotel in Arbatax on the east coast that has stunning views and affordable rates and has been around since 1967.
Of course, I can’t blame you if you want a taste of the Costa Smeralda experience. If your pockets are deep, then consider staying at Hotel Cala di Volpe, a Luxury Collection Hotel, in the heart of the Emerald Coast, a pink palace with roots dating back to the 1960s, when it was built by the Aga Khan. This is a rare chance to experience the full-bore, billionaire Sardinian lifestyle. The new Baglioni Resort Sardinia is the choice for a very manicured taste of five-star luxury. Then plan on one of the chic-est seafood lunches on the planet at the waterfront Quattropassi al Pescatore in Porto Cervo. Put on your shades and gaze out at the superyachts at anchor while waiting for the Aperol spritzes to arrive. Why should celebrities have all the fun?

What is autumn’s essence? Leaf raking, pumpkin picking, the taste of apple cider—and just enough nip in the air for an excuse to bring out that favorite sweater. Then there are fall festivals—but perhaps the ideal way to mark the season is to stage your own festival for friends and family.
To throw the perfect private party for your inner circle this fall, you might follow the lead of Cordelia de Castellane, artistic director of Dior Home and Baby Dior. In her latest book, Life in a French
Country House: Entertaining for All Seasons (Rizzoli New York), she invites readers into her welcoming world of stylish hospitality. On a mild day, the designer suggests, host an intimate meal outdoors with ivory linen tablecloths, vintage plates and décor that echoes the surrounding nature.
That’s autumnal pleasure everyone can share. And don’t forget to pull up a chair and enjoy the celebration yourself.

China with colorful prints is also a favorite that adds visual interest. “I don’t think I could do without [prints], either at home, on me or in my collections,” she says. A hearty autumn meal isn’t complete without a sweet exclamation point. A heartwarming crème caramel dessert, courtesy of de Castellane’s friend and business partner Sanaz Degany, will be a hit with all your guests, especially when presented in a rustic wicker basket and glass serving dish.
SANAZ’S CRÈME CARAMEL INGREDIENTS
n 15 sugar cubes
3 cups milk
5 egg whites n 10 egg yolks
1 cup sugar n 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped
DIRECTIONS
Melt the sugar cubes in a saucepan or a mold over low heat until they turn a reddish-brown color. Remove from the heat and swirl the pan or mold from side to side so that it is caramelized all over, including the edges. Leave to cool. Bring the milk to boil in another saucepan. Beat the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. In a large bowl, mix the egg yolks with the sugar and vanilla. Pour in the warm milk and whisk vigorously to obtain an even mixture. Add the beaten egg whites and mix carefully. Pour the entire mixture into the caramelized mold and cook it over a double boiler for 40 minutes.
Leave to cool before removing from the mold.

MANN’S 49
The last few years have proved that many of us can work from anywhere—why not work out from anywhere too? That’s the idea behind virtual reality (VR) fitness, an exercise trend that uses cutting-edge technology to create a workout that takes you, in effect, anywhere in the world.
The concept of VR is relatively straightforward— you strap on a boxy headset that blocks out sounds and sights so that you’re fully immersed in the “metaverse.” But you’re not merely watching a 3-D film on the big screen—you’re interacting via hand-held controllers that you punch, swing, lift or slide. You’re strengthening your muscles, burning calories and getting in your cardio. Except that here you could be doing Tabata atop the Great Wall of China or biking through the San Fernando Valley, no passport (or COVID vaccination card) required.
VR fitness is also changing the notion that video games are a sedentary hobby that requires nothing beyond cognitive skills and concentration. Many VR video games (such as Beat Saber or Ragnarock) stealthily work in the physical stuff. They’re games first and workouts second. And indeed, VR workouts share the appeal of the video game—you’re so immersed in this technological world that you don’t even realize how hard you’re exerting your body.
Many VR workouts—Quest and Quest 2, for example— can be played via the Oculus platform, a headset from the brand Oculus, a subsidiary of Facebook (now known as Meta). Starting at $299, it includes the headset, two touch controllers and a charger, with many add-on accessories. Once you have the platform, the apps themselves are pretty much chump change.
A basic “beginner’s app” is FitXR,
with which $9.99 a month gets you on-demand HIIT, dance and boxing classes choreographed by experienced trainers—and submerges you in different environments. You can also work out in real time with up to six friends. Or try Supernatural ($15 a month), which features four types of workouts with trained coaches— Boxing, Flow, Meditate and Stretch—and a personal leaderboard to keep you going.
Another option is Holofit, with which you can use your body weight to ski or box, or participate with your at-home bike, rowing machine or elliptical. These interactive workouts take you from San Francisco to Saturn, counting calories burned and letting you save your stats in the app as you try to beat your scores next time. It’ll cost you about $12 a month. There’s also VZfit ($9.99 per month), similar conceptually to Holofit but with technology that combines with Google Street View to take you on real streets across the globe.
All of these apps have free seven-day trials, perfect if you’re unsure but want to try something new. They also come with built-in communities you can choose to take advantage of if your intrinsic motivation is lacking.
Prefer to become part of a community in person? VR fitness studios are gradually popping up across the country, one being San Francisco-based Blackbox VR, which combines virtual reality fitness with real-life dynamic resistance training. Here you’ll have access to equipment that helps shape and strengthen your body. There’s also ThriVR24 in Dallas, where participants can fly, box, bike or run thanks to VR tech.
So, whether you’re ready for a new workout regimen or are simply an early adopter when it comes to new trends and tech, VR fitness could just be the thing to take your fitness routine to another dimension.

Who better to showcase a creative duo’s masterpiece of a home than another creative duo? That notion animates designers Susanna Salk and Stacey Bewkes as they visit the 200-year-old, Federal-style farmhouse of Karen and Martin Cooper, tucked away in New York’s tranquil Hudson Valley, and let readers tag along. WEDDING
Emilie & Ryan
AVON,NY
ENGAGED:FEBRUARY 2022
MARRIED: JULY 2022
HOW THEY MET:
We have known each other for most of our lives. Through multiple mutual friends, we ran into each other at parties and events throughout high school. It wasn’t until we were both back home managing our family’s dairy farms that our friends tried to set us up. We were both too stubborn to agree to that, but ultimately ended up talking and eventually going out on ice cream dates.
THEIR FAVORITE THINGS:
My favorite thing about Emilie is her brutal honesty, whether you want to hear it or not she will tell you how it is. My favorite thing about Ryan is his hard-working attitude and his dedication to everything that he puts his mind to.
THEIR PERFECT DATE:
We both lead very busy lives so a spontaneous ice cream date after a long day of work is always welcome, followed by a drive around the countryside in Ryan’s truck.
THE PROPOSAL:
Ryan proposed in our kitchen with our dog Declan by his side. We had dinner planned with friends that evening so it was a great way to celebrate and surprise them!
THE VENUE:
Our wedding was held at Emilie’s grandmother’s gardens called Linwood Gardens. It is a very special place to us as Emilie’s parents, aunt, great aunt and grandmother were also married there. We celebrate most of our holidays at the gardens, and it holds a special place in our hearts. With the beautiful view of Genesee Valley, the meticulously maintained spaces and its history, Linwood Gardens was the absolute perfect venue for us.
THE DRESS:
I knew that I wanted something elegant and classic to go with our venue but after trying on quite a few options I realized I needed some bling to make it really “me.” My dress was a-line with a beaded sheer bodice, a satin skirt and buttons down the back. I also had a cathedrallength, lace-trimmed veil that went perfectly with the dress.
THE DECOR:
We combined rustic elements including Ryan hand building an arch from old beams from his farm as well as some glam in our mothers both wearing dresses with sequins and classic and elegant signage around our venue. We wanted to include elements from each of our farms so we utilized wheat for lining our aisle and then used dry beans from Ryan’s farm and the wheat from Emilie’s farm for our centerpieces. We found old milk cans from Ryan’s family and used those as decorations throughout the venue. Finally, we had cheese trays for appetizers with cheese from Emilie’s farm and a soft-serve ice cream machine with make-your-own sundae supplies for dessert with ice cream that was made with Ryan’s farm’s milk.
PURCHASING THEIR RINGS:
We came into Mann’s knowing that we both wanted to be involved in the process of picking out the engagement ring. Christina gave us tons of options but helped us choose a style based on what we wanted, classic with a little something extra. We came back in during Wedding Band Weekend to pick out our wedding bands with Christina. She was patient, helpful and truly listened to what we were looking for. We had a great experience shopping for all our rings, and they turned out even better than we could have imagined!
