UNDERSTANDING GLUCOSE Blood Sugar Levels INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

When we eat foods that contain carbohydrates, the digestion process turns them into sugars that are released into blood. Those sugars are then transported through the blood and travel to the cells. The pancreas, a small organ in the abdomen, releases a hormone called insulin to meet the sugar at the cell. Insulin will connect onto spots on some cells of the body and act as a “bridge,” allowing the sugar to go from the blood and into the cell. The cell uses sugar for energy, and blood sugar levels can go down.

When Diabetes is a problem • type 1 diabetes: the body stops making insulin completely. • type 2 diabetes: Usually a mix of the cells not using insulin well (which is called insulin resistance) & pancreas not making enough insulin. • With prediabetes, it is usually a problem with the cells not using insulin well.

Biggest developments. A blood sample is required to check blood glucose levels. The most common type of blood glucose monitor requires using a lancet to prick the end of your finger to draw a small drop of blood. This drop is then placed on a disposable testing strip that is inserted into an electronic blood glucose meter. The meter measures the level of glucose and returns a number on a digital readout.

When a person has diabetes, his or her body is not able to get sugar from the blood into the body’s cells, which causes

When to Check Blood Glucose Levels • after fasting and/or before meals • before and after meals • before all meals to decide how much insulin to injectat bedtime • when you wake up in the morning

high levels of blood sugar. This frequently happens after consuming a meal high in carbohydrates.

WHY MAKE THIS Making life easier INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

Children with type 2 diabetes have to learn to adjust their lives to this desease. The problem is that they are young and full of plans to roam wild and free, not pricking fingers and measuring blood lglucose levels. We want to expriment with technology and what it would be like if we developed a system that would connect children, parents and teir doctors with real time data.

A new kind of app We want to develop an app that can help to train a child and that would work well on as many tech platforms as possible. A doctor should be able to use it on a desktop, a mom on an I-pad and a child on any kind of available platform. As we experiment with this project what we will use is an apple watch. We want children to have an easy app to help them track their glucose levels. Parents and doctors will be able to keep track of any unusual measurements.

PERSONAS & SCENARIOS: CHILDREN INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

APP USER: Jimmy (Patient) Jimmy is an active little boy with tons of energy and a very short attention span. He has type 2 diabetes and does not have a lot of experience with self-testing, but his parents want to help him be as independent as possible. Mom and dad got Jimmy a new device that can send blood readings to an app via bluetooth. This can drastically improve Jimmy’s life for the better, as both parents and his Dr. can help him get used to a new life style tracking his blood glucose levels and tracking results over time.

Scenario number

3

You are Jimmy, you just got a notification on your watch about getting your blood tested. Unfortunately you forgot to bring your new glucometor to school and you only have your old back up with you. Please measure your glucose levels and enter the information manually on your watch so it can be reported to your parents and your doctor.

PAPER PROTOTYPES FOR PARENTS INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

GLUCOSE TRACKER FOR PARENTS Once I figured out all the features that would need to be included in the parent, child and doctor apps I created a quick rough draft to organize content and usability. I then started to ask people to complete different scenarios then I made improvements, additions or changes based on the received feedback.

The importance of user testing As I started to create the features of each app the most important thing to do was to start talking to people with diabetes. I needed to know how they feet about their current monitoring tools and the kind of things they would like to change or improve in what they are using.

Important features for parents: • Easy to track a child’s glucometer use • Easy to monitor glucose level results • A way to interact with physicians

PAPER PROTOTYPES FOR PHYSICIANS INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

Doctor App

GLUCOSE TRACKER FOR PHYSICIANS Doctors are busy professionals with a lot on their plate. I wanted to make this app very easy and without a lot of screens. It should be able to help a physician to receive notices when a patient’s glucose levels are in dangerous levels. This would be especially helpful to parents who might miss their own notices about a child being in danger. Doctors and parents should be able to keep their lines of comunication open so that patients, in this case children, will always have someone watching over them for protection.

PAPER PROTOTYPES FOR CHILDREN INTRODUCTION

GLUCOSE TRACKER FOR KIDS

EXPLORATION

When you think about an app for kids you might think about bright colors and funny illustrations. However, as I think of this app geared to help children to learn to track their glucose levels I think about the importance of this tools for their lives. As I designed this apple watch app I wanted to make itless playful and more focused on making something that kids could learn to love for its ease of use and then keep it with them as they grow up becuase of its timeless design.

DIGITAL PROTOTYPES FOR PARENTS INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

Almost there Up to this point I basically conducted all my usability tests from paper to digital. Once I felt pretty sure about features and laouts I started to make prototypes that started to bring me closer to my final design, and that’s how I landed where right here. This version was only one round of testings away from becoming a final. You can notice harsh lines

DIGITAL PROTOTYPES FOR DOCTORS INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

Not as easy as it looks Once I collected enough data from the initial 8 prototyping rounds I created my first digital variation. Through this current step I was able to better showcase all the features that would be included in the app. I went to my local hospital and I asked some of the staff to play with this first prototype. They gave me excellent feedback with lots of suggestions for features that may be needed and the elimination of things that would be redundant in the process. This first digital variation was a little heart breaking for me, mainly becuase I thought I had it all well organized. however, once people started to complete my little scenarios they strugled a lot, but in the end it actually helped me a lot to discover new ways to help them complete their tasks a lot faster.

FINAL APP DESIGN FOR PARENTS INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

Parent app Getting the parent app to this final design was one of the hardest things I have ever done. It took many hours of interviewing people, fighting to not do what I wanted, but what was needed. Nonetheless, I am very happy with this final result. I believe the purpose of the app has been fulfilled and that was evident as I asked people to conduct the scenarios that I described in earlier pages. I considered all user tests done the moment people were able to consistently do what I asked without having to take too long to figure things out

FINAL APP DESIGN FOR DOCTORS INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

Parent app The Doctor’s app design was the least painful of the 3 designs that I had to make. I drew huge inspiration from Apple on this and right from the start people had no trouble with this one. The biggest changes I made were only reflected in color and size variations, everyone loved this app just as I had it from earlier steps along the way.

FINAL APP DESIGN FOR CHILDREN INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

Parent app This app was so fun to make! going from my earlier prototypes to this was a huge leap, but I was able to make it thanks to the input that I received from the many kids I was able to test this with. The biggest lesson I got was that children are not behind on technology, they might be way ahead than all of us. I tried keeping this app very simple but not child like, and I did that so that children will get that this is for them but that it is also not a joke.

IN CONCLUSION My final thoughts INTRODUCTION EXPLORATION DEVELOPMENT USER TESTING OUTCOME

I have learned so much from the design and user testing rounds of these 3 apps, but above all I have learned about how much I actually care to make a product that does what it says it can do while also making it easier for it’s users. I feel confident that Glucose Tracker will not only improve someone’s life but also help those loving individuals who care to help and monitor their health. From this point forward, and as real users get to interact with this app, new adjustments will have to take place based on suggestions and reviews. The process will allow this application to get even better with every tweak.
