We are almost there, depending upon where you are geographically speaking, winter is on the way out and Spring is almost here which means Summer is just right around the corner. So with that, we thought we would mix it up a bit and drop a Body Issue. You see we study the gram, like you and yep we get it those thirst traps and thots are not going anywhere anytime soon. So we thought we would team up with some of the hottest models, photographers and glam squads in the business to bring you some fashion inspiration for the warmer months and a whole lot of body body body. We haven't done an official count but we think this issue has the most models cover to cover, ever. Spring is about newness and to freshen up our look why not try a new cut? Our Adam Maclay shows us how with the help of photographer Jace Lumely. Our cover stories just keep getting better with; The Men from Wilhelmina in 'FIVE' shot by Justin Bridges and styled by Michael Cook. Ford Model Ryan Tift is a MAN ON FIRE in vintage Versace shot by Aydin Arjomand. Finally, FOREVER FORWARD a swimmer inspired fashion editorial starring Soul's Tom Barker. Issue 13 packs a one-two punch with more fashion in Goliath, Underneath, Verão and Adonis. We also sit down with Wil-
helmina Models CEO, Bill Wackerman and Founder and CEO of fitness brand Rhone Nate Checketts. Don't worry we wouldn't give you a body issue without a few tips and tricks for a better Summer physique! Get some Pre-Summer body advice from model, actor, and athlete Jared P. Smith. As always, I am here creating this body of work called MAN OF METROPOLIS because I believe in the work I do and the people I do it with. It takes a lot of muscle, and literally blood, sweat, and tears to build a Body Issue or any issue for that matter. So thanks to everyone out there who watches -- and cheers for us. You know I grew up swimming in high school and college and the one thing I always knew was that if I put in the work before race day, I would succeed. How long have you been modeling? I started modeling only a few months ago so its been an exciting new journey for me. Do you remember your first shoot? What stands out from that experience? Of course! My first shoot was actually with Brent Chua a couple months ago right when I started off. I was so excited for this shoot for Man and being able to work with him again really just made the experience that much better. That first shoot was so unique and special to me, naturally I was a bit nervous walking in. Once I met Brent we got to work. He really impressed on me the importance of believing in who you are and who you want to be and then trusting in the path that takes you there. Let's talk about fitness and health. Do you have a ritual you follow to stay camera ready? I really just keep it simple in terms of a diet, nothing too special, but a chocolate flavored protein shake is always a go-to after a tough workout. CrossFit has always been a cornerstone of my workout routine, but I recently started practicing Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu. What is your go-to underwear style? I like to mix it up! If you could compete in any physical challenge, like America Ninja Warrior what event would you compete in? I'd love to be an Iron-Man Finisher one day. It's such a daunting task to train for, but that makes the feeling of success by completing it that much greater. Plus the community surrounding the sport seems to be filled with some great people that I'm sure I would enjoy getting to know.
How long have you been modeling? I’ve been modeling for about 2 years now Do you remember your first shoot? What stands out from that experience? If you don't remember your first shoot, tell us about a memorable shoot you did since starting out as a male model? Yes, of course I remember my first shoot! It was a magazine shoot and I had no idea until I got to the location. The studio was probably one of the nicest ones I’ve shot in until this day. The photographer was helpful and made me feel very comfortable. The photo is currently being used for my comp card! Let's talk about fitness and health. Do you have a ritual you follow to stay camera ready? Go to protein shake, or clean eating dishes you cook at home? I’m the worst person to ask about health hahahaha it's honestly hilarious! I literally only eat pizza, pasta, hamburgers and a lot of rice based dishes. Luckily my body doesn't change so I post away on Instagram with no regrets. What is your go-to underwear style? Ex: Boxers, Briefs, etc? Definitely briefs, No more boxers for me. I’m a big boy now hahahaha If you could compete in any physical challenge, like The Cross Fit Games, Summer Olympics, etc, what event would you compete in? I would compete in the Summer Olympics for Judo or Wrestling Freestyle, I actually train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu so I feel like training for the event wouldn’t be much of challenge if I had the opportunity.

How long have you been modeling? I’ve been modeling for about three years now I started in Florida, Miami and then I went to China Guangzhou and New York City. Do you remember your first shoot? What stands out from that experience? Personally my favorite shoot was one with Cory, who I shot with recently and it stood out because he allowed me to model and create an emotional picture instead of the photography trying to tell you what to do, he let me do my thing and guided me along. Let's talk about fitness and health. Do you have a ritual you follow to stay camera ready? Health and nutrition I try to workout everyday, doesn’t have to be a crazy workout but just allow yourself to push yourself mentally everyday and get a good sweat going. Drink tons of water! I also take amino acids and certain vitamins, sometimes preworkout to helps. My diet consists of mostly chicken, eggs, rice, romaine salads, just consistently putting good things in your body to reach a catabolic state eventually. What is your go-to underwear style? Definitely short briefs, preferably either a nice dri-fit or soft silky breathable material. If you could compete in any physical challenge, like America Ninja Warrior what event would you compete in? Powerlifting. I am around 170 pounds and when I’m consistently working out like crazy and watching my diet I’ll go up to about 185 pounds. I have a gym at my house. I can bench 335 pounds.
How long have you been modeling? Almost 4 years I think?! Do you remember your first shoot? What stands out from that experience? Yes I do remember haha. It was on a farm with horses. I was with a girl and we had to do a couple shoot, I remember that I was very shy at first. I didn’t know how to "pose" yet or what to do but the team was really cool to work with and the pictures turned out really nice. I had a great first experience. Let's talk about fitness and health. Do you have a ritual you follow to stay camera ready? I started working out when I was 13 years old. I used to play hockey so I started to go to the gym for my sport. Now it’s part of my routine and I love the feeling after a good workout. I don’t have any diet I just eat clean and drink a lot of water. I don’t believe in protein shakes and those things. What is your go-to underwear style? Calvin Klein boxer is a must haha. If you could compete in any physical challenge, like America Ninja Warrior what event would you compete in? Olympics games. I would be in the Canada baseball team. Baseball is my favourite sports. Two reasons: my dad always told me, "in life you are first or last." Second because I believe that if you put the time and effort you can archiveanything you want in this world.

1. How long have you been modeling? I've been modeling for 7 years but traveling for 6. Do you remember your first shoot? What stands out from that experience? The most memorable shooting I had was in a small island in china sea where we took over 8 hours by boat to get there, it was surrounded by sea from all sides and the photos were just incredible, it was more about the location then the shooting itself. Let's talk about fitness and health. Do you have a ritual you follow to stay camera ready? I was doing waterpolo for 10 years and then boxing afterwards for a while so I'm used to workout all my life, I don't use any supplements, just cooking home the things that are good for me at the moment depending from a workout I do, if it's more lifting or more cardio the diet changes by that. What is your go-to underwear style? I go for briefs, they're just always easier for castings. If you could compete in any physical challenge, like America Ninja Warrior what event would you compete in? It would definitely be the CrossFit games but it would be really hard to prepare cause I would probably get too big for modeling, but with 6 months to a year of prep I think I could have incredible results.
How long have you been modeling? I've been modeling for about a year, I believe I signed with Click last May. Do you remember your first shoot? What stands out from that experience? I remember my first real shoot that was in the middle of last summer. It was for a cologne that has yet to come out and I just remember trying to play it cool because I was well aware the other models were way more experienced than I. I remember seeing all the people working the production and just thinking about all the money that was invested just to take pictures of me. It's safe to say it was a pretty nerve wracking experience but im proud that I carried myself in the manner that I did. Let's talk about fitness and health. Do you have a ritual you follow to stay camera ready? I workout about 4 days a week which consists of cardio and weight training. You have to be slim as a male model so instead of pushing heavy weight I stick to lower weights and do more repetitions. As far as diet goes it's more so of keeping myself in a calorie deficit than changing what I eat. I do try to stay away from carbs after breakfast and usually substitute them for vegetables. I do not take any dietary supplements. What is your go-to underwear style? I wear boxer briefs. If you could compete in any physical challenge, like CrossFit? I would love to one day compete in American Ninja Warrior. I remember watching the original japanese version on the G4 network when I was little. I don't know how well I would do but I’d love to take a swing at it.

I loved magazines for a long time but the world has changed and we have to change with it. I’ve always liked Vogue and GQ for mood board inspiration pics. But it’s really the digital native sites that are changing the game.
It is no secret being the leader in any organization is challenging, but you also keep fit! What is your secret? Do you do Peloton at 4AM, do you ever eat hamburgers? Tell us everything.
As the CEO of Wilhelmina how do you keep up with the changes, we love watching you on Instagram it looks like you are having fun, what is your secret?
I never Peloton at 4 AM and I love a good burger at a diner. When I came to Wilhelmina, I started having meetings at the Big Daddy’s diner near our office. People thought it was a joke, but I love diner food and pancakes. I’m a big believer in indulging in what you like, but I’m also a believer in being physical and taking care of your body. You can have both successfully.
I’m so lucky to be able to work at Wilhelmina--it’s such a historic and legendary brand. When Wilhelmina Cooper founded the brand 51 years ago, she was leading the charge on diversity, and body image, way before anyone ever was speaking those words in fashion. It’s a fun business but it is a business. We are the only publicly traded modeling agency in the world. Last year we did over 37,000 bookings. Who has been the most rewarding celebrity you signed/represented so far, was there a specific campaign or project you watched unfold? From a talent standpoint, I’m really proud of the work we’ve
Let's talk men's fashion & models. What do you see is the trend right now? What do YOU want to see in a men's title in 2019/2020? I think that magazines are becoming more and more like art books for a very select audience. We’re moving away from a general audience into people that are into specific categories, whether it be fashion or travel. We’re getting inspiration from all over today. This generation is consuming media in such a different way. The brands that don’t understand that are going to be out of business.

We know there is a difference between runway, editorial and ads, but sometimes there is that ONE guy, who just does it all and becomes a legend. Similar to movies, like Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Who do you think is the equivalent coming up in men's fashion? Is he repped by you?
Who do you admire and why?
Wilhelmina represents incredible stars in the men’s industry like Francisco Lachowski, Marlon Teixeira and RJ King. We always have new fresh faces like Wellington Grant. But today what’s happening is you’re getting models that are moving into being Instagram stars, you’re getting Instagram stars that are moving into models, you’re getting actors and musicians that want to be models. Today the game is so exciting and so different. You can be a male star and not be 6’2” ½. You can cross categories. That makes the job of a talent agent more exciting than ever.
Politician: John Adams. He led in a tough time and created so many of the principles that we now use to define our political system. He was also a devoted husband who would write these long lovely letters to his wife. He was a leader in the most powerful way and still knew what was really valuable in his life. That’s my ultimate work-life balance.
Karl Lagerfeld had the ponytail (RIP). Do you have a uniform as part of your look? How would you describe your style? Spend too much money at any stores? Well, I would hardly consider myself up there with the icons, but I have a look that works for me. Today I’m wearing a blue cashmere sweater with track pants. I choose simple colors and mix them up with something more fun like a print. I like a good pair of shoes. I’m always spending too much on fashion, but it’s such a good investment in yourself. People should spend more time and money on it if they can. But you don’t have to spend a lot to have good style. There are people who are effortlessly chic who wear simple yet well-made things. Right now, I’m loving Helmut Lang. I’m mixing in Givenchy and Balenciaga with more street brands. I find that breaking down of casualness, streetwear and high fashion is amazing. It’s very comfortable as a guy to wear and it’s simple but still incredibly chic. Speaking of personal style, do you have a philosophy or style of leadership? Have you changed your style at all? How did you adapt? I always believe that you lead by example. People don’t follow you because someone puts you at the front of the line. They follow you because they believe in the vision you have. When people see that you work hard and you want success for the company and for them, that’s inspiring. My style has changed since leaving the publishing world to come to Wilhelmina. It’s such a people based business. Our talent--our business--gets in an elevator every night and leaves. You have to adapt your style to a more supportive, and less hard-edged. The talent that we represent and the employees that work at Wilhelmina have every choice in the world. We want to make them feel like they are at home, valued and understood.
Pop-Star: Nicki Minaj. She’s an original. She innovated a game. She truly has the courage to be herself, to say what’s on her mind. She’s always been her authentic self and that’s really inspiring.
Designer: The world lost an incredible designer recently with the death of Karl Lagerfeld. I had the opportunity to meet him this past year. He was outspoken and at the top of his game for over 35 years. I don’t think you can be at the top for so long and not have real genius. I’m inspired by artists in general, whether that be fashion, architecture or interior design. Male Model: I’ve been a big fan of Alex Lundqvist. He was with Wilhelmina for many years. He’s just an incredibly talented human being and a nice guy. Business Leader: Guy Oseary has been changing the management game for years. He originally started at Maverick record label at the age of 19 years, and now represents people like Madonna and Amy Schumer. It’s inspiring to see people in this game that are really smart and that know how to package deals and make them valuable for the client. You are trapped on a desert island, you can take 1 album or record with you for the rest of your days? We had our first NYFW with him and he walked Philipp Plein. He’s a good guy, tremendously talented and someone you want to have a drink with. Famous last words for lovers of men's fashion magazines, like MAN OF METROPOLIS? Instagram is changing the way we do business. I can’t stress to our agents and talent enough that it’s an incredible opportunity to put your brand out there. Every person who’s thinking, “Oh my gosh, I don’t want to be an Instagram thot,” will be left in the dust. People who are using Instagram successfully are making money and building careers. If you want to know my definition of a sellout, it’s someone who can sell out an area. That’s what stars do. Period.

We have gotten to know the RHONE brand over the last year by attending the group workout events around New York City. We see you are also doing this on the west coast now. First, off thank you for taking the time to be in the pages of MAN OF METROPOLIS. It has been an honor to witness what you have built, experience the brand and see the people you impact by the programming RHONE has created here in New York. What was the thinking behind this activity and programming by the RHONE brand, are you achieving the goal and what is one or two surprising takeaways from these workouts with the extended RHONE family coast to coast? The initial thinking is we were being approached daily by various people to represent the brand as influencers, ambassadors etc. It all felt very inauthentic to me. We wanted to get to know the people that represented our brand, we wanted to learn what they liked, didn’t like and filter out those we thought were a brand fit vs not a fit. I would say that the events have completely exceeded my expectations. A fraternity has developed between the group. Guys look forward to getting together, sweating together and pushing each other. Outside of Rhone I care most about inspiring men to move forward in their own personal pursuit of progress. Watching people progress and get closer to their goals is like magic—nothing more special than that. Fitness apparel is a big market with the Adidas, Nike, Under Armour of the world -- and even luxury brands are getting in on the business of fitness apparel. A brand new guy comes into your Times Square pop-up or visits the website. What do you want them to think or experience with the RHONE brand, and if they could only buy/try one piece before they become a loyal customer, what item should that be and why?

I want guys to realize that we are more than just an apparel brand. That we stand for something, we have a perspective and a point of view. My goal isn’t simply reaching a revenue target, it is building a big megaphone to have the biggest impact possible. On the product front I want guys to get it immediately simply by touching and trying the fabric. They can feel the difference and watching guys light up when they get to see it in person is the best. I love all our products but right now I’m really digging our Spar Tactel collection—rarely a day goes by that I’m not wearing something from it. Let's talk about HEART. From the vision and mission of this brand to the employees and fitness professionals that surround it, what is it do you think you the designer and overall team have here? pulse of heart of what is happening and RHONE right now and what excited you for 2019? The heart of Rhone is its mission—to inspire each other in the pursuit of progress to move Forever Forward. It’s about not viewing the person next to you as the competitor as we have been taught to do—but to look at each other as a teammate to help us excel together. If we are competing with each other then we are only happy when we ourselves succeed and angry when someone else does. That’s the worst kind of way to live. Our competition is ourselves, getting better over time. I used to say every single day but the truth is that’s not how real progress works. Some days we move forward others we move backwards but over time if we stay focused and with the right intent we will have an upward trajectory. What gets me most excited about this year is growing and building our team—our employees across HQ and retail and those we work with as influencers and ambassadors. We love the line, "Forever Forward." is this your personal mantra each morning and all day? Or is there a book, or quote you have adopted for this year or season in your life both as a CEO, and husband, father and man? What is it or are there a few you can share? I have always believed in eternal progression and when we were considering a mantra that really represented us that just came to mind. I don’t remember where I was but it felt like a “Eureka” moment for me. I loved the alliteration and the meaning. Asking me for a favorite quote is a dangerous thing to do because I might take the nearest crate, stand up and never get down! One of my favorites that I have been considering again and again lately is this by Ralph Waldo Emerson: “That which we persist in doing becomes easier to do, not that the nature of the thing has changed but that our power to do has increased.” Life is hard. Work can be hard. Fitness can be hard but often times we make it harder by simply caving early. If we just persist then tasks get easier even though the thing we are doing hasn’t changed at all—we have. The notion of what a CEO is and isn't is most likely still based on assumptions we get from movies or the news. Ultimately it is about being a successful leader, right? What is your leadership philosophy? Is there any great challenge you have had to overcome in the role since starting RHONE? What have you learned about yourself through this process? I am a student of leadership because I care so deeply about it. In looking at history, great leaders have made a significant different in how organizations, countries and families develop. All of us need to be leaders in our own ways. For me, leadership is about MANOFMETROPOLIS.COM
empowering people to reach their full potential—giving them the right tools, resources and helping them define what choices they are free to make themselves and then—get out of the way. I’m a flawed leader in many ways but I know that the team at Rhone knows that I care about them and would do anything for anyone of them and I believe that makes a big difference. Ok switching gears. Do you have a sports hero and why? This is tough for me. I grew up a big sports fan and there are many great sports heroes but I think it just feels too cliche to pick one for me. I look up to the heroes who are great people first and great athletes second. There are a ton of guys out there on Instagram showing off their fitness skills, they are ex pro athletes, trainers, models, Dads, Kids, etc. As a man and the leader of a men's fitness brand do you have any assessment or commentary on the state of men's health and fitness in this hyper-connected world? It can be a real powerful source for good if consumed in the right way. Recently with a difficult family situation I saw the good in social media—people reaching out to offer support, working together in a cause and powerful imagery to make me feel supported and cared about. There's a great story I heard awhile back about a Native American Chief speaking to his grandson about life where he said “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy. “It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves. One is evil – he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is good – he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith. The same fight is going on inside you – and inside every other person, too.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, “Which wolf will win?” The old Chief replied, “The one you feed.” Social media is very much the same way. Are you feeding yourself resentment and comparison, long loops of others highlights or are you feeding yourself inspiration, motivation and education. In some cases it might even be the same images but your interpretation might be completely different. We are blessed to live in a time where we have access to incredible information but if we become consumed by it we will lose the forest for the trees and the bigger picture of what matters most. What is the best advice you would give to a guy who doesn't look like the "gym gladiator" and wants to reset his life and place a more prioritized focus on fitness in his life? To use a Simon Sinek phrase “Start with Why”. Why do you

want to focus on fitness? What is the core reason? The more we learn about health and wellness the more we understand the role that fitness plays. Understand your why, make a commitment and then execute. Too many people spend time on goal setting and not nearly enough time on goal orienting and tracking. Deciding you want to build a house is the first step but it will get you absolutely no where in isolation. It isn't all about brands and fitness, you are a human too. What do you most look forward to each day/week in life? What brings you real happiness? I absolutely love being a dad. It is honestly the greatest challenge and reward. I can think of nothing more motivating and inspiring than having an opportunity to raise 3 boys into what I hope will be great men who are kind, generous and contributing. Words to live by? Jared Prudoff-Smith was born and raised in Washington DC and has been involved in athletics and coaching/teaching his entire life. He grew up playing various sports, including collegiate basketball and has always appreciated the impact physical fitness has on performance. After college, he taught middle school earth & space science and coached high school basketball in Miami for two years. He started CrossFit in 2010 and immediately fell in love because of it its ethos and methodology. He began coaching in

It is safe to say he has an unusually ridiculous but endearing disposition and sense of humor, and he loves to infuse that into his classes. Mid-March brings several things, the NCAA tournament, usually a blizzard in NYC, and the realization that summer is coming. Which for some sparks a panic of, “oh shit I need to get my body on point before I’m the guy who keeps his t-shirt on at the pool or beach.” As a result, this time of year also brings a plethora of “beach-body” articles. This won’t be one of those. In my years of training clients, coaching Crossfit and my own brand of H.I.I.T. classes and lifetime of athletics, one of the most simple adages has and will continue to ring true: consistency is key. So if you’re looking for a quick but temporary fix, look elsewhere. I’m looking at simple adjustments that will make lasting impacts to serve you not only for beach season but for life. Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, let's get to work. When thinking about how to improve, you need to know where you stand. Get a physical, measure your body fat, do some basic health diagnostics, so you know exactly where you stand. If you want to step up your diagnostics, wearables now track your HRV, calories burned, sleep patterns and more. Are they necessary, no, but can they be potentially transformative in how you approach your health and wellness? Absolutely. Now to all of you out there who just like to wing it, and play things by ear, that’s cool too, IF you have a foundation upon which you can successfully and safely do that. The people who are capable of successfully winging it, generally are only able to do so because they once operated with a ton of structure and determined what works best for themselves, or they’re the rare anomaly. Frustratingly, you almost always see that exceptions-to-rule looking freaking phenomenal on Instagram. F them, we’re going with structure here. There are three main areas when trying to improve someone’s health and fitness: work, fuel, and recovery. First thing I want to address is your nutrition (or fuel). I say fuel because I once had a friend make the analogy of how if we were cars, the food we eat is our fuel. You want to fuel yourself for optimal performance. If you’re happy with your weight and just want to
perform better, improve the quality of your food, and keep the quantity the same. Think about a racecar, you don’t want extra gas in the tank at the race’s end because of excess weight unless you want to add muscle and mass, and oppositely, you don’t want to be running on fumes, unless you’re trying to lose weight. Tracking your food and your caloric intake is critical for determining whether or not you should be increasing or decreasing your consumption. Many people hit the gym 5+ days a week but don’t have the physique they want. That's because you can't outwork shitty nutrition. Meanwhile, it’s possible to improve your physique and health solely by improving your nutrition. Fortunately for many of you, this will be amazingly simple, especially if you’ve been omnivorously approaching eating because any attention to improving this will have a big impact. Revisiting the fuel analogy, go through what you eat on a daily basis, and ask yourself, is this good fuel? Yes? Then great, keep it. No? Then cut it. Sugars - out, fried food/fast food/aggressive boozing - out …to the best of your ability. You don’t need to become a food puritan and strictly eat whole thirty in perpetuity, never drink and hate yourself because you haven’t had ice cream in three months. What’s the point if you aren’t enjoying yourself. That being said, most of us could make massive improvements to our diets just by applying some common sense. If you really are struggling, sitting down with a nutritionist can be huge, or trying something like the whole 30 is a great way to 1, clean things up over a month and 2, expose you to dietary habits you may want to continue. As it comes to training and recovery, again return to your goals, what are you trying to achieve? You aren’t going to become a fitness model working out 3x a week, but you also don’t need to live in a gym. Every day honestly assesses whether you did anything to make yourself fitter. If you can say you did, you just took a step forward towards a healthier version of yourself, awesome. If you can’t; you took a step backward. Do better the next day. It’s not rocket science. Now if SPRING 2019
you’re trying to go to the Crossfit games or training for a scholarship or roster spot, you aren’t reading this for fitness insight, you should have a coach, and can just enjoy my mediocre writing. As for the rest of us, start by trying to do a little bit more each day, the rule of 1%, might not seem like a lot just on March 15th, but if you do 1% more each day until June 15th, guarantee you’ll look back like “damn, that shit works!” If you’re thinking every day is extreme, it’s not, we were built to move, so move! Does that mean you have to do hellacious Crossfit workouts everyday? No! Overtraining is real and you don’t want to burn yourself out, but on an off day instead of doing nothing, actively approach your recovery. NYC has multiple recovery-centric studios. Take a recovery session, yoga class, or spend 30 minutes stretching and doing low impact core movements like planks. If you’re feeling more ambitious run/bike or swim, or apply your fitness, and play sports, just do something. Next, if your fitness routine is just that, routine, then mix it up. If you run all the time, get in the gym and lift some weights once or twice a week. Always lifting? Take something more bodyweight focused, and mix in more cardio. The more you leave your comfort zone, the more alive and healthier you will feel and be. If there’s one takeaway I hope you get from this, it is that every day you can take a step closer towards being the version of yourself that you want to be, so do what you can to take that step. One day that might be crushing a workout, another day it might be drinking a tiny bit less when you’re out with friends, and not drunkenly crushing a pint of Ben and Jerry's when you get home. You don’t have to win everything every day and little victories add up and are just as important as the big ones. So yes expect more from yourself but don’t forget to be kind to yourself and accept and acknowledge where you’re at. Maybe you don’t hit your target right on schedule, but if you shifted your way of thinking and being for the better when you do hit your health and fitness targets, those gains will be there to stay!

When did you come up with the idea of RecoverNYC? What made you decide to 'go through with it'? The short answer is that mid-summer 2018 Rick approached me and said “Hey man, what would you think about opening a recovery studio”. I said “let’s do it”, and we were looking at real estate 2 days later before we even drafted the business plan. Three variables lead to the quick movement. First, I don’t hesitate with much of anything. Whenever there
is something I want to do, I jump in with both feet. I have zero fear of failure at this point in my life. Secondly, as educators in the fitness space focusing on corrective exercise and performance enhancement, we knew that there is a major market of people who aren’t willing to settle for good enough. New Yorkers especially want the most out of their life, work, and play experience. Third, there was a major hole in the market. A hole so large that the market didn’t exist before us. I knew the time was right and that we had something special to bring to the world. SPRING 2019
What are some common misconceptions about wellness and how does RecoverNYC break bad habits or encourage overall better approaches to wellness? I think one misconception prior to RēCOVER opening was that people had to “just deal” with an imbalanced physical instrument. They believed that as long as they could muscle through, they were doing all they could. Now that we have opened and people understand they can

optimize soft tissue health, sleep quality, stress management, cognitive function, cell health, and anti-aging, that “good enough” is no longer good enough. The biggest misconception though was that recovery was synonymous with athletic recovery. People believed that only athletes needed recovery to enhance performance. This is where we stepped in and said “hey, anyone with a performance demand has performance stressors. When those stressors aren’t mitigated and balanced, performance declines”. Moms have performance demands. Business professionals have performance demands. Creative professionals and “everyday people” all have performance demands. RēCOVER has created a home and an answer for all. Our mission is to revolutionize the way we live, work, play, and train. If you want the most out of your life, we’ll help you create the balance to do so. If you can only experience one treatment at RECOVERNYC, which would you suggest and why? This is a tough one. Considering we focus on the “who, when, and why” over the what, we like to know what each client’s story, stressors, and desired outcomes are. Each of our technologies have been put in place to facilitate the systemic demands based on their answer. However, if I had to pick just one it would be NuCalm. First and foremost, we are currently the only facility in NYC that delivers public access to this ground breaking device. What has been surprising to you and the brand since opening in NYC a year ago? Any major challenges you have overcome or want to overcome since launching? The biggest surprise is who is walking through our doors. We assumed it would be the athletes kicking our doors down to jump on NuCalm, CVAC, etc. However, well over half of our consumer base is business professionals and people who are less concerned with athleticism and more concerned with stress management and sleep quality. In hindsight, it was pretty silly for us not to foresee this. We do live and operate in NYC after all. New York city is definitely a fast paced, “fight or flight” dominant town to function in! As far as challenges it would most likely be spreading the word. I imagine this holds true for most new businesses, especially when they are first to market. We are growing each month though, and are finding more effective ways to let NYC know where we are and that we are here to help. What is the favorite recovery method of your customer since day 1? From month to month NuCalm and our Sunlighten full spectrum infrared saunas go back and forth for the “King of the hill” title. Surprisingly, in August when it was brutally hot, the infrared sauna crushed it and was our most popular. Perhaps it’s because our saunas have Netflix and it’s a nice was to seclude yourself, have some “me time”, and get tons of health benefits at the same time! BONUS Question: What can new and current customers look forward to from RecoverNYC in the next hear ahead? Any new treatments or experiences etc or promotions!? We are always aiming to first and foremost improve customer service before trying to razzle dazzle our clients with new “stuff”. Within the next week or two we will have an ipad and headphones at each table on the floor so that each person visiting can enjoy their time even more by watching Netflix, or Pandora. We will also be launching a new experience combining a CBD topical supplement for sore muscles. The thing we are most excited about though is we are now making it possible to experience RēCOVER without having to visit RēCOVER. We have beta tested and will soon be launching “RēCOVER: on-site”, our mobile platform where we bring technologies such as NuCalm, Normatec compression, hyperice venom for the lower back, and more directly to offices, events, and conventions. Can you imagine getting 2-3 hours of restorative sleep instead of slamming a 2nd or 3rd cup of coffee just to get through the day? We recently cuaght up wih the Manscaped’s CoFounder Steve King, What was the inspiration for starting the first brand dedicated to men’s below-the-belt grooming and hygiene? After a night of exchanging horrifying stories of manscaping gone wrong, we realized that below-the-belt men's healthcare was a wholly untapped market. Many products had been developed for the feminine wellness space, but for some reason, similar easy-to-use, affordable, and pH-balanced options didn’t exist for men. As entrepreneurs, my business partner Paul Tran and I felt that products
dedicated to a man's most sensitive region was long overdue. What is the worst manscapinggone-wrong story you’ve ever heard? There are plenty of scary stories but one of the funniest stories involved a guy shaving his groin area in his friend’s bathroom while standing on his friend’s towel. After he finished, he forgot to shake the hairs out as he refolded the towel. The next morning, his friend took a shower and ended up with more hair on his face then when he started! How has the launch of Manscaped provoked more conversation around a previously “taboo” topic?

There’s just been a real stigma around male grooming and hygiene. We found that the launch of our brand and the use of humor in our advertising and social media has made people feel more comfortable with asking questions. We receive messages every day – not only from millennials, but even men in their 40s, 50, and 60s – who are reaching out for guidance, and we are happy to be the platform for them to engage in this dialogue. Which product are you most proud of? We are currently in our second iteration of our electric trimmer, which is called The Lawn Mower 2.0. We have successfully combined innovative technology with a super sleek design. It has a 6,000

What type of customer feedback do you like receiving best? Our customers are very vocal about their satisfaction with our product line and we love reading their product reviews. We get especially great comments about our Crop Preserver, which is an anti-chafing ball deodorant, from guys who had never even heard of such a product before and were blown away by how it kept them comfortable all day long. One professional pool player shared with us that he would be standing on his feet for up to 8 hours a day playing a tournament. Before he discovered our Crop Preserver, he would end the day itching and suffering “down below” from chafing and heat buildup. Now he is itch and chafe-free. This was a big, 285-pound guy; if it worked for him, it will work for anyone! What’s your best advice for someone who has never manscaped before? Our best advice is simply to use the right tools for the job. Definitely don’t go taking any old razor or scissors down below. And give our skin care products a try. You don’t know what you are missing! What else is in the works from Manscaped? Our goal is to remove the stigma around male personal hygiene. We started with the development of tools and skin care for belowthe-belt grooming, but that isn’t all we are about. We actually just launched a new product called The Foot Duster, which addresses foot odor, softens tough skin, repairs cracks, and supports cell regeneration so you can put your best foot forward. What is your personal manscaping routine, do you light candles or blast Metallica? Or both? After being married for 32 years and after having a multiple level neck fusion that prevents me from bending my beck, my personal manscaping routine often becomes a date night. Do you now constantly talk in puns? Only in marketing meetings. Then it's balls to the wall! But on a serious note, while our creative is rife with puns and humor, men really do need some help. We take what we do - and the science behind it - very seriously.
