LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

GREAT EXPECTATIONS

This is our ninth issue since we began MAN of METROPOLIS in 2015. We have now surpassed 1,000 pages of content, and too many social media posts to count. I want to take a moment to thank the very talented people who make every issue. There are many many hours that go into planning, casting, shooting and closing a story. If you like what we are up to be sure to visit manofmetropolis.com to subscribe and follow-us on social and it never hurts to tell a friend or two. We appreciate you.

As a gay man, I am so proud to have Gus Kenworthy on the cover of MAN of METROPOLIS because he gives me hope and he is a bad ass, just watch him compete! One of the things I marvel at with Gus is his love for life and his pure joy every day. He is living his truth out loud and representing the USA. He inspires me and will inspire you too America! Gus has conquered his fears, and dominates on the slopes, the only thing left waiting for Gus is great expectations and gold.

In our new issue we introduce you to Talitha Bateman who

Wishing you an incredible 2018.

feature the handsome, stylish, and talanted Emery Kelly. Our fashion stories in this issue are some of the boldest yet and will help you get through the rest of this winter. We start this issue with a brightly coloured ode to the athlete in ‘The Warm

York in ‘Snow Patrol’ by Karl Simone, and roam the streets in ‘Playground’ by Tiffany Dawn Nicholson. We place some style bets in ‘Lucky No. 8’ by Dennis Tejero and chase the winter blues with special Style Editor Javon Drake’s ‘Spring Awakening’ an accessories story. It may come as a shock, but I’m an idealist. Maybe it was all the comics I read as a kid or all those Rocky movies I watched that However these days it seems we need a hero now more than ever. I don’t mean just any hero, we need a real modern day American Hero and clearly that isn’t our President in 2018. Thankfully we have the Winter Olympics to distract us, inspire us, and remind us how to be resilient through uncertain times. We can do it America, together! And Gus Kenworthy and team USA can help. Gus Kenworthy is known as the top free skier on the planet heading into the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang. Most would say the road to his second winter Olympics started in October 2015 with a cover story he did with ESPN magazine where he came out as Gay. Not a small feat for an extreme sports athlete where anything not cool, was considered ‘gay’. Since his silver medal win in Sochi Kenworthy’s visibility grew from pup savior, to social media darling and model. At a 2017 HRC gala Gus admitted as a child “...he wished he could be invisible” but now he is the face of LGBTQ athletes everywhere. His fear turned to pride and his visibility has been honored by fellow athletes, the media, and other icons before him like Greg Louganis.

Cover Story | America’s Golden Boy

MM: The last few years have been about visibility and authenticity, what is the theme for Gus Kenworthy in 2018? GK: Expectation. Everyone was watching the Olympics and their were people who thought I would do well. I thought I could do well, but I wasn’t a medal favorite. I was more of a dark horse. I got my medal and I did well the rest of that season then I came out. I’ve had a lot of successful seasons since the last games. I think having the medal from the last games and a bunch of contest results along with the exposure of commore eye balls on me. Coming into the next games I signed a bunch of endorsements with Olympic sponsors, which puts more pressure on me. There’s expectation in every interview talking about these games. MM: How are you able to be so free? Is that tied to coming out or just your personality? GK: I think it is kind of the nature of my personality, but I always masked it a little bit and hid it a little bit becuase I didn’t want to out myself. Since I have come out it has been so liberating to be myself and not really care. It has been fun to put it out there. MM: Freestyle skiing is a pretty extreme sport, what is your training like as an Olympian? GK: Training in the gym isn’t completely necessary. I go to the gym 6 days a week but their are a lot of guys in the sport that hardly go to the gym at all and are also successfull. Ya know our sport isn’t about strength or endurance it is about technique and execution. It’s almost more like dance and it’s about the amount of time you put into practice. I think when your body is running well your gonna ski better and so I do stuff to keep my body in top shape to recover from injuries and to prevent injuries. Box jumps are really good for the sport becasue you get explosive leg power and that’s something you use on take-offs on jumps. MM: Tell us about your diet when you are training? GK: There is no endurance aspect to the sport but it is a serious sport, you are pushing your body in what it is capable of doing, but not gassing it out. The year after the 2014 Olympics I blew my knee out, broke my femur, and tore some ligaments so I was in the gym everyday for recovery and fell in love with it. In terms of my diet I do it more as a person who wants to be MM: How do you balance the fun and focus of being an athlete and person? GK: There is a quite calm place I have to get to, I’ll focus on my breathing and I will visualize my run. I close my eyes and think about it. I think my personality is goofy and silly and high

energy; but I have moments that are polar opposite of that. It’s an action sport its dangerous and I’ve been hurt a lot of times and most people have. Injury is part of the sport. I think you have to have a lot of respect for the sport and we do everything to cut the risks, but you do have to kinda of take it seriously. MM: The world has expectations for Gus, but what are your personal goals at these Olympics? GK: I’d like, love to get gold ha ha ha, it’s pretty obvious. The coaches discretion spot and they gave it to someone else. I was pretty gutted about it. This time around I’d really like to go for half pipe. I’d like to go for both, that’s what I’m trying to do. MM: What do you want people to be saying about Gus Kenworthy in 2018? GK: There’s more to me than just a skier or the gay guy. There’s other things I want to pursue after the 2018 Winter Olympics. I want to try to get into acting and hosting and do more in front of the camera things. My dream growing up was always acting. I did musical theatre as a kid, so I would love to branch out into tv and movie work. It’s going to be hard but I hope my visibility and being an olympian will at least open doors. MM: How has your sense of style evolved over the last few years? GK: hop so when I was younger I wore baggy jeans and baggy t-shirts. It’s gross to look at a photo of me going into high school. My

they should; it shows off your physique and matic. I wear a lot of black, and a little bit of grey and white. color. It’s the same as my living space. I really like a monochromatic themes that use blacks and whites, raw steel and maybe one pop of color. MM: Best part of love right now? GK: Having a partner in things. Matt is very understanding. It’s hard having a relationship that is very public because everyone expects it to be perfect in a way. He’s really really sweet and a good communicator so I’d say the best part of love is communication and understanding. MM: Best part of life right now? GK: Things are pretty good for me right now, I’m happy and excited going into the Olympics; so I’d have to say the best part of life is skiing. 31

Talitha Bateman can next be seen playing ‘Nora Spier’ alongside Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner and Alexandra Shipp in Love, Simon, based on the popular young adult novel “Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda”. The Talitha is known for her roles as ‘Hannah’ in the new It, and ‘Janice’ in New Line’s Annabelle: Creation. Talitha took some time with us for a quick round on acting, hew now project and how a guy can standout.

TB: MM: How do you feel about everything going on in hollywood as a young budding actress?

MM: Can you tell us more about your character, Nora Spier?

TB: It makes me hopeful for my generation. The more victims that are empowered to speak the truth about what they went through, the more fear that a potential abuser may have. I’m so glad we now live in a culture where victims feel comfortable to speak up.

TB: Of course. Nora is a shy, awkward and goofy girl. She loves cooking and hanging out with her family. And although she might not be the best at it, she really wants to

groundbreaking. How did it feel to be a part of this TB: I loved working with our director Greg and my (on screen) family in this project. Greg gave us so much ing and laughing the entire time. It never felt like work.

TB: I don’t usually notice what a guy is wearing, I mostly pay attention to their personality, their smile and how they hold a conversation. But, I do like guys with leather jackets. I guess whatever style they have, they should own it and young Johnny Depp. I think anything he wore looked great on him. Also James Dean. Maybe I was born at the wrong time.

5. Who are your musical icons? Why? Frank Ocean because his style is his own. He’s representing himself truly through the music he shows to the world and in my eyes that’s what being a true artist is. Showing people who you are honestly and truthfully. new multi-camera comedy series “Alexa & Katie”, releasing in Spring 2018. He is also the lead singer in the pop band “Forever in Your Mind”, which was formed in 2013 on season 3 of “The X Factor.” They recently released their single “Rabbit Hole”, performing it on MTV’s “TRL” and NBC’s “The Today Show.” The band released their EP “Euphoric” on January 12, which debuted in the top 10 Pop Albums on iTunes. We ran into Emery during NYFW and talked music, fashion and more. 1. Some of our readers may not know you were on X-Factor; can you tell us what that experience means to you now? The experience I went through with X-Factor taught me to be myself and to never let anyone change me. If someone besides yourself is trying to change you, it’s not for your “better days”, it’s for theirs. Also, it was really cool meeting Simon. now? What are you listening to? when I was younger, but recently I’ve been listening to SZA, Daniel Caesar, Miguel, Frank Ocean, and Kehlani. 3. You are a heart throb for Forever in Your Mind, you guys are young! What has the pressure been like to grow up in front of the world?

6. We are a style & culture mag so let’s talk about style: We saw you at NYFW, you looked good! Tell us what styles or brands you really like right now? Thank you, it’s all thanks to my lovely stylist & friend Franzy Staedter. My style icons would have to be Harry Styles, Justin Bieber, and Zayn. For brands, I really love Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Supreme, Zara, Pacsun, H&M, OG Penguin, Calvin Klein, Palmiers Du Mal, Mauna Kea, Mostly Heard Rarely Seen, Haculla, and many more. Honestly I don’t have a favorite look, I just love clothes haha. 7. We know you made the move from NYC to LA. How is LA different? What do you miss about NYC, and what is the most surprising thing about life in LA? miss about New York is seeing my family & friends all the time and watching the seasons change. The most surprising thing about LA is the people, the different cultures jam packed into one city, you can learn a lot of things living in LA. 8. Any famous last words? Be you & have appreciation & love in all things. Never be stagnant, always grow & move forward. The people you surround yourself with is a representation of who you are.

I’ve honestly had no feeling of pressure going through this journey, it’s been a wonderful experience. My personal style is just me being me haha. It’s been a real fun ride and I hope it never ends. 4. You have a new EP called Euphoric, why the name; and what kind of goalsdid you guys set out to achieve on this? pure happiness and appreciation. I want people to know how happy I was to make this music and how much I appreciate people listening to it.
