ON THE COVER Model Reilly Patton with Fusion wears Gucci by Ryan Slack

EDITORIAL
5
If you are reading this, then you know we have gone through some changes over the last four years finding ourselves here, at Issue 15! When I started MAN OF METROPOLIS, street style, specialty drops like Moncler 1952 and the gender fluidity movement across style and beauty categories were just slivers of the fashion pie back in 2015. Now, at the dawn of 2020 they are front and center and are what drives fashion and culture today. We have watched diversity win over and over this year with record-breaking artists Lil Nas X and body positivity queen Lizzo. This issue was about taking risks and looking to the future. What does high fashion look like in 2020? Who are the players, what are they wearing, and what are some bold statements we can make through editorial to project our unique canvas as a American men's fashion title. I was thrilled to team up with our friend Kevin Breen as our Fashion Director for the September Issue. We kick-off Issue 15 with photographer Pieter Henket and Fusion model Trystan Valentino for the cover story, Gattaca; a high-fashion journey in a post-apocalyptic America, perhaps what things could look like (if Trump gets re-elected) at least we can still wear Dior! We bring back one of our dear friends and photographer Ryan Slack who shot our first women's issue this spring and multiple fashion stories for past issues of MAN OF METROPOLIS. Ryan and Kevin's team created Inception. The
15
fashion story is psychedelic time-capsule starring Fusion model Reilly Patton sporting Gucci in a defiant-like jaggeresque pose. Trace through the future of fashion with Replicas by Daniel Matallana, Spectre by Henry Wu, Total Recall by Dorien Jimenez, Birds of Prey by Ben Abarbanel & Charlie Le Mindu, Chronicle by Sergey Vasiliev, Nightcrawler by Gabe Araujo and Limitless by Matt Albian. I sit down with male super model Simon Nessman to talk about his new fragrance campaign with Bottega Veneta, meet musical artists Yellow Claw and San Francisco 49ers wide reciever Dante Pettis. Thank you to all our creators and collaborators, and readers for being a part of our past, present and future.
The future is all of ours!

Autumn is here and it is time to edit that dop kit and upgrade to some new scents for the cool crisp days ahead. LEFT: Bottega Veneta Illusione; a masculine fragrance (woody citrus aromatic) combining sparkling colors of Italian citruses with lemon and bitter orange essences. A fresh and aromatic fragrance with fir balsam and white cedarwood. TOP: TOM FORD Tuscan Leather Intense; Its enigmatic heart is infused with fresh Osthmanthus, spiced with the original scent’s herbal inflections of Saffron and Thyme. Voluminous Jasmine blends with Rose for a narcotic descent into the drydown. Cedarwood and papyrus expand the textural experience RIGHT: Calvin Klein Men's Eternity; a new modern woody note to the composition, with an alluring sage providing a crisp freshness while the majestic cypress creates a masculine and sensual middle and the suede accord unleashes an elegant and powerful woody trail. LEFT: 3 Moncler Grenoble “The idea was to translate the concept of old festivals in a modern way—like a rave, but in the snow. We translate what is in our culture.”
TOP: 2 Moncler 1952 “This season it is about a very laid-back guy who loves nature but lives in a very big city. Specifically it is a guy from L.A., where the nature is very close. There is a slightly hippie mood in the collection. So there is a fringing on a down jacket and a down jacket in a cotton tie-dye.” RIGHT: Moncler Craig Green “So every season we draw on something that we think is at the core of Moncler’s DNA. This collection was about lightness. All of the garments can pack into really small squares. As we were going through the design process, all of the choices we made—in the zips, the poppers, everything—were defined considering lightness as a prime factor." MANOFMETROPOLIS.COM

Yellow Claw is a Dutch DJ and record production duo from Amsterdam consisting of Jim Aasgier (born Jim Taihuttu) and Nizzle (born Nils Rondhuis). The duo's music is a mix of a wide range of genres and often incorporates elements from trap, hip hop, dubstep, big room house, hardstyle and moombahton. We sat down with the duo to talk music and business. What did you both grow up listening to, favorite album or artist when you were young or early teens? We used to listen to a lot of grunge and punk rock stuff. Nirvana, Green Day, Rage Against the Machine, that kind of stuff. A lot Nirvana mainly. How do you think those songs or the artists influence you now as an artist? I think the raw energy and loudness of that music definitely made an impact. We were doing “wall of deaths” and moshpits on halftempo drops back in 2010 when that stuff was totally unheard of in dance still. You almost cant imagine that now since everybody is doing the same old stuff playing the same old drops. Do you have a go-to record or album that is outside of EDM and what is it and why? I listen to “Kind of Blue” by Miles Davis at least once a week. But the first albums of N.E.R.D, Vampire Weekend or Robin Thicke still hit those feels too. Tell us more about how you both got started in EDM? Was it love at the start? We both were hip-hop DJs for many years but got into mixing downtempo hip-hop records with early Rusko dunstep or Hudson Miohawk beats. We started just to create a new kind of energy. And through making those kind of beats and putting them on SoundCloud, we started meeting likeminded people like Diplo and Flosstradamus. I dont think we ever considered ourselves to be EDM until we got booked for EDCLV in 2014 and had the settime before Afrojack. What was the biggest hurdle for you as both an artist and a businessman/men? Balancing the time spent on working and living is the biggest hurdle. At a certain point there is a party on everyday of the week somewhere in the world. You cant play them all. Taking your time to appreciate things in this blessed but superfast life has been something we really had to put effort into doing.
Do you have a favorite track right now to perform at concerts like Tomorrowland Main Stage, maybe a song the audience really responds too? Currently playing a lot of Gammer, Juyen Sebulba, Dither and Ghoster stuff to be honest. You have a label and a clothing line -- how are these two similar and how are the different? They are both about just doing what we feel like doing, and daring to take a risk both creatively as financially. You are very active on social, IG to be specific. What does the Instagram space mean to you right now? What do you love about it, and what do you hate about it? We love about it that we can communicate with our people directly. Its really great, to get to share your story, without third parties interfering. Personally we dont hate anything about it but it is unfortunate to see people losing themselves on it. We have seen people who are so preoccupied by faking that they’ve already made it on socials that in the end they had no more time and energy left to actually put in the work to make it. That's the moment when you see people missing deadlines to finish new music while at the same time they are flexing on the gram doing grocery shopping dressed up as ninjas with sunglasses on, going “live” about what milk to buy…Thats not it. Are there any common EDM myths you would like to debunk in regards to Yellow Claw? Yes, that we are not two former top models put together by Simon Powell in order to reign the EDM world. Words to live by? You will regret the things you didn't do more than the things you did.

Canadian-native Simon Nessman was discovered at 18 years old when a friend of his sister sent a picture of him to a local modeling agency. Still in high school at the time, he chose to finish his schooling before pursuing his modeling career. Simon saw success on the runway, walking for some of the most notable designers and fronting luxury fashion campaigns. He has recently branched out to become a director of the Cedar Coast Field Station, an independent, not-for-profit society with a mission to preserve ecological health through place-based research and education that celebrates the cultural and biological diversity of Clayoquot Sound, A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Tell us how you got inspired to start Cedar Coast Field Station? At 17 I was kind of plucked out of Canada and shipped off to New York to start doing some modeling work. I was kinda quickly swept away in that world. I spent about five years working full-time as a fashion model and traveling back and forth. I think during that time I was able to experience a lifestyle that was in many ways disconnected from nature, I would describe as nature deprivation disorder. For me, it was an amazing experience that I appreciated, and it really gave me a greater appreciation for nature and the way that I grew up. At that time I moved back to the west coast of Canada to a
very remote area, and sort of fell in love with the lifestyle here in Clayoquot Sound. Ultimately, I decided I loved that lifestyle but didn't want to be a total recluse. I should find some way to facilitate similar experiences for others. So this is what ultimately lead to Cedar Coast Field Station. A place where people from all over can come and either researchers to study the local ecology, or education groups coming to learn. Was there a memorable moment as a kid that factored into your love of science? I was in an outdoor leadership training group in 11th grade it was called the Explorer program and was a semester-long program. The program included a week-long hiking trip, a weeklong kayaking trip where the field station is located now. Part of the program was a biology credit, and really for the first time, I experienced being able to be in the field studying as opposed to sitting in the classroom sitting under florescent lights. That was a big shift in my motivation and inspiration to get engaged and involved. What would our reader be surprised about with the shoot for the Illisuione fragrance campaign shoot? Well, it is a bit of an illusion! One surprising thing is that it was kind of like a cold rainy day. The incredible film crew worked their magic by adding some big lights and large tarps suspended in the sky. They were able to create this illusion of a beautiful warm sunny day in the Italian countryside. It was an impressive production adapting to the challenging circumstances of the weather. How did you personally connect with the fragrance? I definitely have been working with Bottega Veneta for a long time and it is one of these iconic and classic Italian brands I have always held in high regard so it was a real honor to be with the brand in that capacity. In terms of the fragrance itself, it has these woody notes of balsam and cedar which for me is really strongly connected to my childhood and upbringing in the woodshop with my dad building cedar furniture. There is definitely a nostalgia associated with the fragrance. What challenge(s) have you had to overcome in the modeling industry? One of them was dealing with this identity thing. In modeling, you are forced to let go of your own identity. Which is an interesting exercise, since I was somewhat like high school jock for lack of a better term. Having to do things like wear makeup. I think there are some aspects of masculinity you have to strip down or let go of momentarily. I had to learn to be quite flexible with my image. The biggest challenge was trying to find a healthy balance outside of work and not allowing my life to revolve around the fashion industry and keep everything in a healthy perspective.

Do you remember when you first held a football? How old were you? I don't actually remember the first time I held a football. I grew up playing every sport, so I'm sure I was probably a few months old with footballs, basketballs, baseballs and soccer balls all over the place. I do know that some of my earliest memories (I couldn't have been any older than 4) are of me playing catch in our family room, watching football games with my dad. When did you start playing the sport seriously? Did you know you were good enough to play pro? I always played it seriously. I started playing flag football when I was 5, and I was so mad the whole time because I wanted to play tackle. I finally convinced my parents to let me play the next year, and that's really when the obsession took off. From the moment I realized that you could play a sport for a job, I knew thats what I wanted to do. The only problem was that I never knew what sport I wanted to play. It wasn't until around my junior year in high school that I realized football was the right path for me. Why do you love football? I love football because it is so much different than every other sport. I have been around and played the other major team sports at high levels, but there is something to say about having 90 guys all bought in on the same goal. The bonds formed with each and every teammate through all of the turmoil and hard work is unmatched. Winning with these people makes everything so much more satisfying. And don't even get me started on scoring touchdowns... Now that you are a 49er; what has been the most surprising thing about being a pro athlete in America's biggest sport? One of the most surprising things I've learned is how two sided this world can be. We're put under this huge microscope where we perform in front of millions, and those viewers are free to interact and say whatever they want to us. Now, most fans are incredible and very encouraging, but a lot of people never think about the toll the negativity has on some players. Especially with social media, you can either be a star of the team where everyone wears your jersey, or you can be the enemy, where you don't even want to go on twitter because your mentions are filled with hateful things. What does it feel like to run out on that field when it is game time? I haven't experienced anything like it. It's almost a euphoria. You work the whole year to play 16 games, a few more if you're lucky. You know how hard you've worked and how little is promised, so you really just try to take in the moment and play with
as much passion and fun as you did when you were a kid. Did you have a favorite NFL player growing up? I definitely did. My first favorite player was Jerry Rice. Of course I wasn't even alive for half of his career, but I was still obsessed. He's the reason I started playing football. Then Reggie Bush came around, and I got to see his whole career. I wanted to be like him so bad, I tried to do everything he did. I had their posters all over my wall. I got a chance to spend a little bit of time with each of them and we had some good talks. Just as good of people as they are players! What you are up to on a day off? Oh man, what aren't I doing when I'm not playing... I feel like I have so many different sides of me. Some days you can catch me at the beach in Orange County. Some days I might be taking pictures somewhere in Washington. I love hanging out with my friends and family, so I might just be hanging out at home, playing video games (Rock Band or FIFA). If I'm not doing one of those things, I'm probably somewhere reading or writing. Maybe at a museum. Might be skating around, or playing pick up soccer. As far as food goes, I love to cook. So on the nights where we don't go out to eat, I'll normally make a ton of food for whoever is over. Why is having a creative outlet mean so much to you? I think that having a creative outlet is so important because it allows us to let go and get our mind off of things. Although football is my job and I love it, it is still no different than anyone else and their job. It keeps us sane to have something outside of our job. For me personally, I love art. And art can mean pretty much anything. Paintings, movies, literature, skating, architecture, fashion. How do you want to leave a legacy and support others? One of the things I've always said I wanted to do was to change people's lives. That could be by just being someone to look up to, or by giving them a place to live. Right now I'm trying to create something that promotes art in our society. So many people look down on art or have certain preconceptions about it turns a lot people away. I want to promote art as an outlet or even as a primary source of happiness or income. I think that there is so much room for growth in regards to the way we view art as a society, and I just want kids to not only know that there is so much out there, but that I support them as well. Growing up (or right now) whose style do you admire? Growing up it was definitely my brother, Kyler. I still get so much from him. If I ever need advice I go to him first. Aside from him there are a ton of people right now whose style I admire. Tyler the Creator, Jaden Smith, Odell, Marquise Goodwin, Russell

Westbrook. So many. Neymar, Lewis Hamilton. Memphis Depay. Kanye. I really admire anyone who has a different style than what is normal. That also means other cultures. I love the way some other cultures dress, I think in a way I admire their style more than anything. At 6'1" and 195 Lbs your fit would likely allow you to really shop from men's high fashion brands. Do you have a go-to look or style when you aren't in a 49ers uniform? It's funny because I actually did some work with one modeling agency and they wanted me to lose weight so that I could model for some high fashion brands, but there's no chance I could afford to lose weight and still play football, I'm already skinny as it is!! Since I grew up in Orange County, my style has a very big influence from the surf/skate scene. If I'm not dressing up, I'm normally just in some shorts and vans. What is the biggest fashion/style "treat yo self" moment you have had since joining the NFL? Shoes count, but tell us beyond the feet moments? I've always loved designer brands, so as soon as I realized I could actually afford to buy some stuff, I definitely enjoyed some shopping. I go to YSL a lot, that's kinda been a continual "treat yo self" moment. We gotta ask about the hair. What goes into the maintenance of those locks. We want the products breakdown. Any new colors going to make it into NFL 100 season? LOL. I wanted to dye my hair purple since I was a freshman at UW (Go Dawgs) but I never had the guts to do it until senior year. Ever since then, it's kinda been a day by day thing. Right now its purple and blue. I had braids in college, I'll probably get those back at some point. Who knows. And I switch products all the time. Right now I've been using Moroccanoil and I really like it. Famous last words? There's a few quotes I love. I'm very religious, so the Bible verse Matthew 5:16 is my favorite: "Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in Heaven." I also love the "Be like water" quote from Bruce Lee, because I think it is so important to not get stuck in one way of thinking. Water takes the shape of whatever container its in, always evolving and changing. In nature, water also changes its surroundings, and I want to do a better job of leaving an impact on my community. We see you are a southern boy from ATL? Are you a Falcons fan, favorite playe? Or What are you proudest about coming from the South and why? There’s a little known thing called “Southern Charm” and it is a living breathing thing when you are raised in the South. If you don’t believe in it then you haven’t met a true southerner. Southern Charm isn’t learned or even necessarily spoken of, it’s just an innate energy that exudes from people born and raised south of the Mason Dixon line. I’m proud of that. There’s a bit of humility that accompanies Southern Charm as well. I’m thankful that my parents and the environment I was raised in, instilled that humbleness within me. It’s one of the reasons it never clicked in my head that my face is on millions of televisions every day. Of course I'm a Falcons fan! We see you started out modeling before breaking big in The Young and the Restless, besides Coca-Cola and A&F can you tell us what it was like on set for Gaga and Britney Spears? It’s funny you bring up a couple of those past jobs. I’m so focused on the here and now that I don’t think about them very often. I forget how lucky I am. I was extremely fortunate to work on some amazing jobs with some amazing people when I was a little younger, Gaga and Britney being two prominent one. They were both incredibly welcoming and wanted everything to be a collaboration. I never had a feeling that I was there to work for them. We were there to work together and they each devoted a lot of their time and energy to create that type of environment. If you watch the Britney video, there were a lot of guys which naturally breeds a certain level of competition. Britney and her team loved competitive energy and decided to use it as a focal point in the video. We were all vying for camera time and attention so the video concept ended up being a pseudo dating game. We had to exhibit our talents to “win” a date with Britney. Guys were break dancing and playing guitar and doing back flips. Spoiler alert: I have zero natural talents so I was scrambling for an idea. We shot the video at Universal Studios and I happened to stumble into a prop room as I was brainstorming. I saw a roll of carnival/raffle tickets and figured I could snag a few without anyone noticing some were missing. When it was my time to shine, I pulled the tickets from my pocket, awarding one to Britney and each of her dancers (who were acting as judges). When the cameras rolled, I collected the tickets and took Britney and her friends to the “gun show!” Cheesy! I know! I think it was too cheesy to make it into the final video, but hey, when you are low on talents and you want a date with Britney, you do what you have to do! You have been on The Young and the Restless for more than a year now, what was day 1 like, and what have you got used to, and what still surprises you about playing Kyle Abbott?
It’s crazy how time flies! I guess I’m pushing two years now and I still feel like I’m brand new. In the grand scheme of soap operas, I suppose I still am. Some of the actors on our show have spent their entire careers on the Young and Restless which is inspiring. My first day was full of veterans of the soap world because my debut episode happened to be the 45th anniversary episode. The writers thought it happened to be the perfect timing for my character, Kyle Abbott, to return to town. Due to it being the 45th anniversary episode, so many past and present actors were on set at a massive party. Those party scenes were my grand reveal so I was meeting actors who had been on the show throughout the years as we were hanging around off camera. It was terrifying having to meet and act with these soap legends, rather than easing in with a few scenes with one or two characters. It was such an amazing experience. It also happened to be my birthday so it was a hell of a birthday present! You obviously work out, walk us through your hardest workout day of the week, what does it entail? And indulge us, what does your cheat day look like? Working out represents so many different things to me. At times, working out has paid my bills, it has been my rock through some really tough times and now, it represents a feeling and a mindset. My schedule is constantly changing so a routine is hard to master. A lot of times, I have to squeeze a workout in wherever it fits and if time allows it. If I have a good chunk of time to myself during the day, that’s when the hardest workouts happen. Usually that consists of boxing for an hour with my trainer then transitioning into weight lifting for another hour or so. If I still have some time, I’ll throw in some extra cardio. Those are the toughest days. The days where my body hurts in the best way possible. My mind rarely shuts off and with boxing, it does. Cheat meals......that’s easy! It’s only going to be one of two things: burritos or pepperoni pizza. I’m a huge sweets person so you know there is going to be dessert thrown in which is usually cookies, peanut butter cups or donuts. Usually there isn’t a cheat meal. I can’t stop there. It’s a cheat day! Where do you see yourself in 5 years? I wonder how many times in our lives we are asked this question....I don’t believe finding the answer gets any easier. I imagine you are asking this question in terms of career and in regards to that, I’m not sure how to answer. I hope I’m still doing something different every day and working with some fun people. Words to live by? Forgive.
