We are just weeks away from 2020. Man of Metropolis is celebrating a decade. I was writing blog posts from my Washington Heights bedroom ten years ago. I could have quit this thing many times. Man, fashion can sure feel like a contact sport or at least some alternate version of The Godfather. I could write a book and I might, someday. But for now, I want to talk about the future of Man of Metropolis. I want to look ahead to 2020, and say something to our readers. We are fucking good. We are. I don't say that to sound arrogant, but you see in Fashion oftentimes no matter what you do it is never enough. So I just wanted to clear things up. Man of Metropolis is flesh and blood. It is comprised of nearly 10 years of hard work and has seen more than 300 creative collaborators issue after issue. I say this because art is super subjective. I say this because fashion and politics are not all too different. I say this because in the past I have let some influence the direction of this title. I listened because I was open. I acted because I was serious about growing. Over the years I learned few people will give you advice who also share a common goal. It is those few you want to lean into. And the rest well they can go away. That is a nice way of putting it. The high-powered creatives who cancel coffee with me for a year, they are not the people I want to be influenced by or learn from. Heads-up
16
there are a lot of those, and if you are reading this knock it off. You are hurting the reputation of the creative community. Be human. Be decent. Lastly, it is my experience that any creative project needs a variety of talent to execute well. Everyone's role matters, but there should be a shared goal. One vision if you will. You can't successfully create anything with 12 Creative Directors on set. Know when to support, know when to direct, and know when to get out of the way. I certainly get out of the way my fair share and this is my title. Humility means maturity. Now that I got that off my chest. 2020 is about excellence. We have a lot to do in the New Year, starting with our new health & wellness title, Metropolis Sport. That means we have 6 full issues next year, Men's, Women's and Metropolis Sport; including more exclusive digital stories. That is a ton of work for the team. So I have decided to say no to anything and anyone that can't agree to pursue excellence with us.
Let's be good to each other in 2020.

Zane Holtz has built a versatile career as a model and actor, starring in principal roles in both television and film. He has starred in recent films; Hunter Killer and Beyond The Night, and can be see in February 2020 in Katy Keene on the CW. We sat down with Zane follwing our excusive shoot to talk more about his new show and more
all looked and moved as legitimately as possible. We had a week long boot camp in Bulgaria prior to ever stepping on set. We dressed out in our uniforms and body armor every day and handled the weapons that we would be using in the film as well. A lot of repetition to make sure everything looked as smooth as possible. Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast.
MM: Where were you when you knew you wanted to pursue acting. Describe the place the sights, the feeling you had?
MM: Did you grow up watching military/war movies? Top 3 movies of all time?
ZH: I had done some work as a kid but never really thought of it as a career. When I was about 20 I had dropped out of college and was interviewing for a full time job as a cabinetmakers apprentice. I had a new baby and it was a decent paying job but I knew that if I took it I could get stuck doing it for the rest of my life and it wasn’t something I was passionate about. I remembered that I always loved acting so I took the riskier route and went to theatre school. MM: Where did you study acting after high school? ZH: I went to Lee Strasberg in Los Angeles for a year. My time spent there really helped me understand what acting can be. Nothing that unusual but there is a sense memory exercise we would always do where you try and remember a specific cup of coffee in your hand, heat, cup smell etc. I never felt like I got that one right. MM: You got a bit of a start through modeling; tell us more about those beginnings? ZH: I just kind of fell into it through contacts I had from acting. I got to travel a lot and meet a lot of creative people. I still keep in touch with photographers I have worked with over the years. I don’t know if I have a favorite but I always liked the work I did with Paul Jasmin. He’s so talented and his shoots often have a cinematic like quality. I always felt like we were telling a story.
ZH: Difficult genre to pick only three! I have watched a lot of these types of films. But a few favorites are Black Hawk Down, Tears of the Sun and Inglorious Bastards. MM: Can you tell us how this project with the CW spin-off of Riverdale, "Katy Keene" came together? ZH: Its crazy. I was actually in New York this time last year promoting Hunter Killer. I thought living here would be great but I would have to have a great job to make it happen. Fast forward a few months and Katy Keene was the first pilot I auditioned for that season. I was lucky enough to get the job and here I am living in New York. MM: Tell us about the character you play? We are still shooting season 1. The show is really beautiful and everyone is so well cast in their parts. It follows a group of friends in New York chasing their dreams and all the ups and downs that come with it. I play KO Kelly. He is an aspiring boxer from Queens who works odd jobs as a bouncer to make ends meet. He loves his friends and is very reliable. Hes the kind of guy you call if you are in trouble. MM: Who did you grow up admiring in the acting world? ZH: I think Viggo Mortensen is my favorite actor of all time. I also always watch Benecio del Toro and Dicaprio.
MM: Ok, let's get back to acting; "the Perks of Being a Wallflower" Do you have a favorite and why?
MM: Do you try to emulate your style to anyone in Hollywood? If so who, and why?
ZH: I love Perks. That is one of my favorite projects for sure. Working on that film with Stephen Chbosky was such a unique experience. I can’t think of any other instance where an author was able to adapt his own novel for the screen and direct it. He was so loving with his material and really made everybody feel like they were a part of something special. I have a small role in the film but that time on set is something that will stay with me for life.
ZH: Not really. Best to be yourself.
MM: Let’s fast-forward to working with Common, Gerard Butler, and Gary Oldman. Did you have to learn a lot about portraying a military man?
MM: Do you have any fun traditions in how you celebrate the holdiays, or do you have any winter trips planned? ZH: Honestly I’m looking forward to spending my first Christmas in New York! I’ve heard the city really goes all out in decorating. Gotta go ice skating at Rockefeller center and check out the tree. Hoping we get lucky and see some snow. MM: Words to live by? ZH: It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.
ZH: The director Donovan Marsh was adamant that the SEAL’s MANOFMETROPOLIS.COM

Noriega started swimming competitively at a young age, eventually representing Peru at various worldwide championships. After retiring from his swimming career, he moved to New York City in 2007 to study singing and acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and started modeling after being discovered by the fashion photographer Mario Testino. Noriega has modeled for brands like Dolce & Gabbana, Calvin Klein, Roberto Cavalli, Louis Vuitton and Hugo Boss. In 2012, he became the youngest Creative Director at Macy's for the millennial division. In 2015 he attended the International Culinary Center in New York City and in 2016 after he graduated he founded the Peruvian restaurant BABY BRASA and subsequently opened the brand's flagship location in the West Village as well as a full-service catering division which focusses on organic Peruvian cuisine. We sat down with Franco to talk food, fitness and the holidays! MM: Franco, as we close 2019, what stands out as your proudest accomplishment this year? FN: I think that being able to position ourselves as the number 1 catering service in NY is one of the things that makes the whole Baby Brasa team proud. It has been a lot of hard work and we are pleased to know that the public is receiving it in the best way! MM: Culture is very important. How has that changed to the food you make and the life you live as a New Yorker? FN: NYC is a multicultural city. My culture is none other than the result of everything I learn from all the other cultures around me. Keeping an open mind is the best way to learn and teach. MM: How long has Baby Brasa been around? Any big things happening for the brand in 2020 we can tell our readers about? We have already 5 years in the market with Baby Brasa. It looks easy but it has been a lot of sacrifice. We are excited about the new Baby Brasa pop ups in the world. Starting with the first one in Rio de Janeiro this January 9th. In addition our second Baby Brasa location in NYC is about to open as well. We are very excited. MM: How do we eat healthier? FN: The best dishes are protein based. The recommended portion should never exceed the palm of your hand. Peruvian ceviche is a classic. And it does not exceed 200 calories. My other favorite dishes are all salads with green colors. It is fiber. You can eat as much as you want. But beware of dressings. More olive oil and less Ceasar dressing! MM: Can you tell us one-morning routine or daily routine you do to stay so fit and carved? Help us out!
FN: Hahaha the secret is that there is no secret. When you eat balanced and constantly train the body will respond. The difference with me is that I have been exercising for 20 years. Nonstop. I do have a secret, I do not drink alcohol, but I do drink a lot of green tea every morning. It speeds up metabolism and is a magnificent natural antioxidant. MM: How will you celebrate the holidays? FN: I would love to do it with my family. But living so far does not always allow it. It is a very common reality of what we live in NY that when you are not with your direct family, we celebrate with your second family: the friends you make here.. MM: Any New Year's Resolutions for 2020? FN: This new year I am determined to contribute and get involved with a cause or purpose beyond my personal goals. I think it should be the resolution of many other people too. We have to help each other if we really want to make this planet a better place. MM: Words to live by? FN: Always surround yourself with people better than you. It is the best way to grow in all aspects of your life.

"I am able to provide a deeper commentary on culture, share my top travel tips for any city, and create curated collections of all the best places (including, obviously, coffee shops) in the cities I love," said Janelle. When asked what The Gathering was Janelle said, "The Gathering was created as a means to think creatively about how people get together. Through a variety of formats, The Gathering is an ongoing series of social events that aim to bring joy and thoughtful connections." We set-off in a caravan of SUVs from SoHo to Hudson Valley, New York Our destination was Lundy Farms a 62-acre property surrounded by 30,000 acres of state forest. We had officially embarked on Janelle's new venture enjoying conversation on the ride and snacks from Wonderful Pistachios and Coconut Water. As we navigated the final winding roads to our destination we were surrounded by Fall foliage that serendipitously marked the start to our weekend.

Lundy Farms is owned and operated by Wellness entrepreneur Mike Patton, Founder of Yoga Vida. The property and entire experience were created to be a destination for eating healthier, enjoying yoga, and other various activities depending on the host of the retreat. On-site Chef & Farm Director Davis Lindsey really drove home the experience at Lundy Farms. Davis brought exquisite culinary chops to the dinner table by way of Blue Hill, the Stone Barns Center, Four Season Farm in Maine, Pure Food and Wine, and Brushstroke in NYC. He and his team prepared all our meals over the weekend including some of my favorites like the roasted cauliflower and beet burgers. Patton and Davis have a shared vision for creating a place that boasts sublime food organically grown on-site. We enjoyed a tour of the property, some light-harvesting from the garden where we ate all our plant-based meals. The estate features a state-of-the-art greenhouse, places to swim, and an expansive landscape to roam. The next 3 days started with yoga each morning and a delicious plantbased breakfast. Our afternoons were curated with nature walks, farm tours and cocktail making with Hudson Whiskey. Each night ended with family-style dinners and old-fashioned games by the fireplace. My favorite evening of the weekend was spent outdoors in the crisp Autumn air around a bonfire sharing s'mores & laughter under the stars.

"I love bringing people together to share meals and moments, and our trip to Lundy Farm was the ultimate expression of that. Even though everyone arrived as strangers, they left as friends with memories. That’s just as important to me as the food, cocktails, and yoga—which were fabulous, too, by the way! Next year, I’m looking forward to expanding how I think about group experiences. Maybe even including international travel!” said Janelle. I must admit the weekend was one of the best things I have attended in a long while and was reinforced by other's experience like attendee, Julianne Lewis. “There was something magical about the weekend that we all felt. The plant-based food was divine, and knowing that it was grown on-site, in a greenhouse we visited, and a garden we harvested from, made it even better. Sitting around the bonfire swapping stories, connecting with people I may have never met otherwise, I kept thinking about how lucky I was to be there at that moment. Everything was perfectly curated, from the fall-themed whiskey cocktails to the bits of downtime we used to explore the property or chat by the fire. Lundy Farm is a gorgeously decorated aesthete’s dream, and Patrick and his team turned it into the most special weekend getaway I could imagine.”

We are thrilled to be working with Darren Tomasso on our new health & wellness title, Metropolis Sport launching in February 2020. We wanted to take some time to introduce you to Darren, and hear more from him over the next few months leading to the launch of Metropolis Sport. Welcome, Darren! Darren Tomasso is a Health and Wellness Consultant, Private Trainer, and Founder of WinYourDay. WinYourDay is a mindset Darren developed during his time at the University of Pennsylvania. It encourages individuals to celebrate the small victories achieved daily that sustain long-term momentum and motivation. WinYourDay is an integrative approach between quality eating and sleep, efficient and effective training, mindfulness, stress reduction, and intentional planning. Darren views each aspect of one’s health as an interdependent relationship that, over time, come together to form your best overall self and a lifelong health journey. MM: Go-to breakfast before you #WinYourDay DT: I just focus on getting my body and its systems going in the morning. The first thing I do when I wake up is to drink at least 24 ounces of water (since I was unable to drink water for 7-8 hours while sleeping). I avoid drinking coffee first thing in the morning because it can further dehydrate you and increase cortisol levels with the spike in heart rate. During colder months, I like a cup of ginger and turmeric tea to warm me up. They’re also potent anti-inflammatories, so they’re great for recovery, especially if I’m training in the morning. From there, I seek out nutrient-dense foods. Again, my goal is to prepare my mind and body so I can win my day. That may be a smoothie, juice, or bowl with plenty of multi-colored veggies and healthy fats. My go-to morning smoothie: Kale, 1/4 cucumber, ginger, chia seed, pea protein, and some essential amino acids (like goji berries or spirulina) MM: What daily routine do you put in place to create a pattern for success? DT: It starts the night before, writing down my game plan to win my upcoming day. It also helps my quality of sleep knowing that I wrote down what I need to do the next day and can sleep with a clear mind. I try to stay consistent with my sleep to maintain a good circadian rhythm since that may be the best way to improve sleep quality; 9 pm in bed and up by 5 am. Most days I’m in the gym by 6:30 am with my first client, so I try to set the time I have in the morning on my own terms. After I wake up and rehydrate, I dedicate 5-10 minutes just to meditate and breathe before I open my phone. During this time, I will revisit the game plan I wrote the night before and adjust accordingly. I have two alarm clocks in my room so I don’t have to rely on my phone. I then do something light to get moving and bring awareness back to my body: foam rolling, stretching, push-ups, bridges or
squats. My busiest blocks of time with clients are 6:30-11 am and 4-8 pm. I use the time between blocks to work out, read, write, program, and work on projects I have outside of training sessions. Before every workout, I meditate for 5-10 minutes to focus my mind on the work at hand. My mealtimes are generally consistent and I only eat within an 8-10 hour window. My motto is “more plants, more life,” meaning I limit my consumption of animal products to one meal a day (I view them as a side dish), vary my protein sources (lentils and curried chickpeas are my go-to’s), and load my plate with nutrient-dense plants of different colors to fuel me. I will have a nutrient-dense smoothie or juice upon waking (it’s technically eating, but I think of it as my morning cup of coffee.) Then, my eating window officially starts around 11-12 pm with lunch. Next, I have some kind of light meal after lunch like yogurt mixed with chia seed, flaxseed, and protein powder, followed by dinner around 6 pm. I’ll eat something light 1-2 hours before bedtime. Call me crazy but I often snack from those boxes of fresh mixed salad greens. MM: How do you spend a day-off from the gym? DT: People think I work out all the time because I am in the gym every day training my clients, but that’s far from the truth. I only workout 3-4 days a week in order to give myself time to recover. I prefer to think of them as “recovery days” to rejuvenate me physically, mentally, and emotionally. I believe that what you do in the gym should fuel everything you do outside of it. Overtraining and under recovering can just increase stress hormones, reduce energy and sleep quality – preventing you from reaching your goals. I make sure I plan training and recovery days ahead of time to hold myself accountable. An off-day shouldn’t be off from the other pillars of your holistic health. I still have to have quality sleep, eating, stress relief, stretching, and mobility so I maintain energy and productivity. Even though I don’t go to the gym every day, I try to move every day. Maybe some bodyweight exercises at home, foam rolling, stretching, or mobility flow when I wake up, or before bed to help me wind down. I also plan at least one week off from the gym entirely every year: a nice mental and physical reset I learned from one of my coaches and mentors at Penn. After that week away from the gym, I come in with new energy and vigor. MM: What is your greatest source of inspiration? Why? DT: My greatest source of inspiration is knowing that every morning I wake up, I have the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life by helping them get closer to their goals, educating them, and bringing them a mindset that helps them win their day. When I first started my health journey, I was fortunate to have positive influences in my life to coach, motivate and educate me.

MM: What is one healthy habit you want our readers to adopt in 2020? DT: Less is more. Small wins over time leads to more success in the future. Oftentimes, 80% effort is better than trying to give 150% effort and burning out or giving up in frustration. You don’t need to change everything all at once and you don’t need to go hard in the gym every day. It’s a longitudinal process. Start small and build from there. For example, if your goal is to be able to cook most of your meals, start by preparing all of your lunches for a week. Once you do that, try for 2 weeks, and then a month. Then, add dinner 3 days a week and so on. This is how you master your goals. Also, eat more vegetables. One out of ten people doesn’t eat enough fruits and vegetables… So that’s two habits. MM: Words to live by? DT: If you train with me you’ll frequently hear me yell out, “we like to have fun here.” If you have fun and enjoy the process, I guarantee you’ll reach your goals quicker, while living a healthy, happy, and sustainable life.
