developing a sense of place attachment in an urban school environment
adviser: Celen Pasalar School is the center of community, not only in terms of education and social manners but also in terms of its physical characteristics as a site, as well as its context. Urban school environments have a capacity different from those of suburban school environments, most noticeably in terms of space and facilities; as a result they afford varying levels of engagement for children. A small portion of the existing research investigates the role of place attachment and place identity within children’s environments. This study investigated how middle childhood children, at average 11.6 years old, perceive the physical attributes of the urban environment around their schools and how these attributes provide experiences that contribute to the development of place attachment

According to the Urban Land Institute, urban populations are expected to increase to 300 million in the United States by 2050 (City in 2050: Creating Blueprints for Change, 31). As a result, demographics of cities are expected to shift, what will the city experience offer to kids and families?

In general, place attachment is defined as an affective bond between people and specific places. The PPP framework, developed by Scannell + Gifford, synthesizes the definitions of place attachment.

Research showed architectural elements, bridges, and views of the city as key components in developing place attachment. This technology is an example of bringing users into contact with those elements. It is a part of a series of technologies on a route that ask users to build a story with elements of the urban environment.

firm: Surface 678 project manager: Walt Havener site: Durham, NC During my internship at Surface678 I worked on construction detail documents and a planting plan for a client. The residence is located in a suburban area outside of downtown Durham. The client wanted to maintain as much of the existing woodland on the site. The palette, interspered with warm colors was mingled with textures that match that of the existing woodland.

This project speculates on a compact school/park shared use facility suitable for integration into an existing neighborhood. The concept was to create a place that fosters wonder, stimulates imagination, and provides restoration in all users, with a focus on students. Tech-smart art was designed to educate students on ecological issues such as air & water quality. Ecological elements such as swales and wildlife gardens were designed to educate students on stormwater management and ecology.

Case study of the Potomac School in Virginia provided lessons in grading/designing outdoor learning environments. Site analysis on mobility connections, contextual land uses, and topography showed areas for improvement. Conceptual ideation inspired by lichen led to a series of form studies guided by design principles.

This studio was a lesson in construction documentation. The brownfield site required remediation and daylighting of its stream. One month was devoted to research, analysis, and schematic design of the site. The remainder of the semester was devoted to creating concise, descriptive, and technically accurate construction documentation. The concept was to provide a park experience unlike those around the site. Providing a refuge within the city to walk during lunch breaks, access to open air tech-smart sculpture, and link the site to the west and east, areas that were blocked off to pedestrians by railroads.

This study abroad experience incorporated three weeks of traveling and workshops and a week of constructing design interventions in Ghana, Africa. The directors of Mmofra Foundation wished to enhance and provide designed elements that connected children with Ghanian culture and promoted physical and mental development in children of all ages. The Playtime in Africa site is located in Accra, Ghana’s capitol, within walking distance of a school. Medicinal plants, vegetable gardens, and spaces for outdoor learning and performance can be found on site.
ADINKRA SYMBOLS Calabash is used to create adinkra stamps, which are dipped in dye and used to apply the symbols to cloth. Adinkra symbols are found on all aspects of Ghanaian life, such as furniture, buildings, drums, and clothing. Traditionally, Adinkra symbols were stamped onto funeral cloth. 25
Despite the prevalence of these symbols in daily life elder Ghanaians feel that children are losing ties to traditional cultural elements and their meanings, such as Adinkra. Design
For the Mmofra Foundation site Adinkra symbols served as inspiration for a design intervention. Adinkra walls allow children to enhance motor skills while learning Adinkra symbols and their meanings. Each wall is composed of two upper and lower wood panels that are held together by a pipe, on which the Adinkra blocks are strung. The blocks feature an Adinkra symbol on one side and its meaning on the opposite side.

outside the fence The sluggish movement of the emerald foliage suggests the approaching wind. Other than the random flight and landing of the ducks, the lake is tranquil. The leaves of the aged trees in the background stir steadily. Rabbits scamper along the grass towards the trees as if they know of the spirit that draws near. Before the wind arrives, the clouds envelope the sky with their shades of white and gray, veiling the glowing citrine sun. Leisurely the feelings, memories, and desires settle. As if escaping from the fury of a fuming god the wind surges against the environment. Simultaneously, passion bursts. Languid movement of the foliage transforms into a strong, spirited fervor. Jubilance manifests the atmosphere as the wind gathers momentum and illustrates its fury. Voluminous ripples in the lake cause it to become untamed and fierce. Leaves on the full-grown trees begin to quake as the wind continues to change rapidly as if needing to prove itself. In the backdrop birds take flight from the trees to find a new, more relaxed resting place. The sky colored with white and darkening gray is covered with black spots, due to the relocation of the birds. The grass moves as if it were an audience at a football game. As every blade waves and bows, it substantiates its magnificence to the prevailing atmosphere around it. The transformation of the serene atmosphere evokes stronger feelings, sanguine memories, and aspirations. Even though the wind begins to quiet down, awe remains. Then in a brash movement the branches sway, signaling the return of the determined force. The indomitable wind returns yet again to fulfill its task, encouraging nostalgia. The leaves flutter on the branches as do ambitions. The wind begins to die down again, yet the movement of the rest of the environment does not cease. Everything continues a gentle progression to an unknown ending.
