The cost-of-living crisis has hit the people of Mansfield hard. Incomes are down in real terms, while profits of the big companies and wealth of the super-rich have rocketed.
Over years Government cuts have devastated council services, but the council has meekly passed them on. At the same time Council Tax, council rents and charges (like car parking at Mansfield Woodhouse station) have been ratcheted up.
Karen says: “I would refuse to implement any government cuts in Mansfield by proposing a no cuts budget. The council has reserves in the bank that could be used, along with borrowing powers, to maintain services. This would allow time to build a campaign across the district against cuts to force the much-needed money from the government.
“A massive campaign led by a socialist Mayor, backed by socialist councillors, could save our services.
“The mayoral system centralises too much power into the hands of one person. I would campaign for the abolition of the mayoral system by the end of my term of office. I would also only take the average wage of a Mansfield worker instead of the current £49,000 allowance.”

Karen Seymour, who is a member of the Socialist Party, has campaigned against all cuts to our local services for many years. As a welfare rights adviser working in Shirebrook and New Houghton she helps and supports the lowpaid, pensioners, the disabled, unemployed - all those most vulnerable to Tory attacks.
• NO more cuts in services. Reverse Privatisation. Bring leisure centres back under democratic control. Rebuild our services and employ council workers to deliver them.
• Build a campaign to force the money we need from the government.
• For a decent future for young people - free education, training and decent and well-paid jobs. Increase council apprenticeships on trade union rates of pay. Free school meals for all.
• Build hundreds of council homes as a step to solving Mansfield’s housing crisis, whilst protecting our green spaces.
• Open warm community centres providing cheap meals and support in every area. Reject higher council tax, rent or charges.
• Combat climate change, including with a free-to-use, massively expanded, reliable and integrated publicly- owned bus service.
• End low pay. Support striking workers! Inflation-proof pay rises for all. A £15 an hour minimum wage now.
• Scrap the Mayoral system. Councils must set no-cuts budgets, based on the needs of the 99% not the 1%.

Andre would prioritise community safety and tackle antisocial behaviour Labour’s cuts to Community Protection and Housing Officers mean it’s harder to tackle crime. Andre will do more to make sure people feel safe in their own communities.
Andre would give you the chance to ditch the role of Mansfield Mayor altogether.
Many people believe that having a Mayor at Mansfield District Council instead of a normal Council Leader (that everywhere else has) is a waste of money, and leads to poor decisions being forced through without enough scrutiny or openness. Andre would give you the chance to decide, and scrap the job if that’s what residents want.
